Not bad for $7 admission + $4 for fish food to feed the trout, which was pretty fun. There are lots & lots of trout, mostly and mainly trout at this hatchery. You can also do the catch & keep trout fishing for $16 per 2-hour session and all that's caught will cost $4 per trout. The aquarium had a variety of freshwater fishes & turtles as well as reptiles & amphibians. There's free parking, a small little gift shop and a white chicken that was quite vocal. Worth visiting if you're in the area but don't come with high expectations- it's not a big place. read more

This is a cute little spot to bring the family to. We didn't fish since you have to make a reservation 2 weeks in advance for $16 a person, includes admission, rod and bait. You can keep whatever you catch for $4, but the trout in the fishing pond look small.. My 2 yr old loved running around and her favorite were the chickens. We bought a bag of food for $4. The trout will definitely eat the food. The larger fish in the bigger pond with the Gars are pickier and prefer live food. The little indoor aquarium was a nice spot to hide from the heat. My only complaint was the worker cleaning and blowing dirt near the toddlers, maybe do another section instead first? read more

I took my son and my dad here. I try to do little adventurish type things when it's my time with him and he's not in school and I'm not at work. We met my friend Kim here and her and her husband had their nephew and niece with them. I got free admission with a pass from my library. If you have a library card look into their museum pass programs. They sell bags of fish food for $4 it's a huge bag and they have a small gift shop where they sell trinkets. I feel like I cannot say this enough but once again another place I had no idea existed! I can't even say how many times we drove right by having no idea this place was here. Anyway this is my son's new favorite place in the world because nothing is more amazing to him then feeding fish. It's reasonable and you can drive right into the cute town of cold spring harbor so it's basically a win win. I think there was a playground at the top of the hill but next time we will have to investigate it. Great place to come to with your children. It is a cute little spot to have your kids feed some fish and look at other aquatic animals. They have all types of trout, frogs, snakes, turtles and lizards. This place has been open for a very long time and is still a pleasure to return after many years. They have two cute little chickens walking around as well! They have a coloring area inside and a gift shop. The staff is lovely. They have a parking lot and a nice sitting area outside. So I had a really difficult experience at the Cold spring harbor fish hatchery. I would not recommend them. When we made the appointment, we made it for a time at 11:30, but I never saw a confirmation email. My staff went with my son, and they said no the time was at 1:30. And they can not offer a different time or even for them to come on a different day. The issue was that the email wasn't "Fish hatchery" as it was on the pay pal account but "turtle experience.". It wasn't even close! Chrissy, the manager said I should always check my junk email every day , like she does. and maybe I should do that That was condescending at best, rude and unprofessional. She refused to refund the money, or offer a different day. I am posting this on Facebook, only because I want other to be well informed If you go, you should check your junk every day. FYI. This is cute place for kids but some things I wasn't a fan of like the small enclosure they keep the chickens in they should have a larger area because they are stuck in that they can't let them out because of the hawks and they always look bored. Some of the tanks are nice and some are lacking and small like the bullfrog big frog tight space with not much to do it's sad to see. read more

Great place to see nature in action. Bring the kiddies but not the cat - this place is all about aquatic animals and how they are bred and born. Located right on 25A just outside of the main village of Cold Spring Harbor, it is a great way to kill an hour to two with the kids. I believe that the fish they breed here are all freshwater types which is odd since they are sitting across the street from Long Island Sound. Thankfully the fishing reservation is not expensive. A few things to think about. Trout eat worms. No one will assist you. Most of the fishing poles do not work properly. The fish are uninterested in the worms. Most kids will be disappointed. The staff will not help you. I will never return. read more

For a $6 admission fee for adults you can explore the small grounds with trout, carp and more. (and throw em some food if you do so desire) They also have a room to check out with TURTLES, frogs, salamanders, water snakes, small and large mouth bass, catfish and more. You can also come here and fish and take home what you catch. Also, if you have a pond or lake you can buy trout to put in it. The small ones go for around $4 each and then go up to $6 a pound. This is a small, overcrowded trout prison. They're packed in tightly, fins stick out of the water. They swim round and round in circles inside concrete enclosures. It's a little depressing. I observed a few dead fish in the baby enclosure since it's very shallow and the ground is light. I can only imagine what lurks in the dark ground inside the slightly deeper fish pens. I did see a few fish with wounds, chunks ripped off of their bodies. There is one extra shallow pool for the tiny babies and three other pools for older ones which were most if not all still technically juvenile fish. A fourth pool is for catch and keep fishing. Really weird. Where's the sportsmanship in that? They're probably barely 1-2 years old. I guess it's just another novelty, a money maker. I still think it can be a great experience for kids though, the feeding part anyway. There's something very satisfying about feeding fish. They practically jump out of the water but I felt joyless afterward. For one, how could the food be evenly distributed that way? The indoor exhibits are worth a look. Especially the turtle babies! There's a church nearby with an impressive pond. Unfortunately the bridge and pond which seem to belong to the church were closed. There's a hiking trail that might take you to the pond but we weren't able to explore it because it was getting late. It's to the right of the church children's playground. Definitely check it out between 10-4. You need a key for the gate in exchange for your license. read more

Hatchery is so cute! At first I was concerned because I came all the way from the city to look at such a small place. However, there is more that just the outdoor pools you see upon arrival. Don't forget to go to the separate small buildings to see the aquarium part of the place. It's easy to miss and assume it's just the 3 or 4 pools. The fishes were somewhat overcrowded, but it was fun feeding them and watch them jump for the food. There is a small kid's room where they placed a tank with baby eels. Cool stuff! The place is cheap only $6 and it's worth the price for the 1 or 2 hours you can kill. They also give you the option to fish for some trout and buy them afterwards. But do you REALLY want to kill and eat the fish ??? Fishes are friends, not food. read more

I haven't been here for two years and when I came back with my son. Everything changed. Two years ago, they had a person in the office where the fishing line was. Today, If you wanted to fish we didn't know the customer has to sign up in the gift shop. There is no sign that says to sign up in the gift shop. The lady in the cash register DID NOT tell us that and she assumed she told us. Also she kept saying if we were lucky to wait and to see if anyone would discontinue the two hours fishing. usually we would line up but the gate and people would pay there. I thought that was convenient. So I was just waiting on line before everyone was there and some lady said to us if your waiting to fish you have to sign up. Thankgoodness for that nice lady. Regardless they should put up a sign that says "sign up at the GIFT SHOP". The outside place has turtles they are cute. They also were raising trouts and you can feed them. read more

It was a nice first time experience. Drove 30 mins to go there so I wouldn't go again unless I was in the area because time spent wasn't worth it. I brought my 6 yrs old and ten yrs old sons today. It was beautiful day and the place was crowded with small to big kids. All looked happy and my kids had fun, too. They especially enjoyed feeding trouts. You can do fish food machine with a quarter, but I recommend the big container full of fish food you can buy for 4 dollars from admission office. Admission was 6 for adults and 4 for kids, and we know it all goes to hatching fish and people working there, so it is not that much but feels like donation. There are two buildings with many tanks inside for fish, amphibian, and reptiles. So those buildings are fun, too. There is a small souvenir store so you can stop by before you leave, too. Hmmmmmm would you believe...having a medical conference at a fish hatchery??? Well, believe it or not, it was a great idea. It was night time so we could not see clearly into the outdoor trout pools, but tables were set up indoors with an assortment of wine, shrimp cocktail, delicious sandwiches served on home made faccochia, rye and Italian breads. We wandered around looking into live displays of salamanders, turtles and various species of fish till the conference began. At the end of the night bakery fresh mini Italian pastries were served with coffee and tea while a trout egg fertilization was demonstrated by a hatchery expert. Also a brief history and hatchery mission was given ending with a short time for questions from the guests. It was different, fun and not so forgettable. This was more of a medical community get-to-gether than an actual conference, but I imagine the experience being a successful one as a venue for conferences, birthday parties or for great a meet up. I am not going to evaluate the food as I have with other reviews, because it was all brought in from various places, and the party planner was not available. read more

They have food machines and for a quarter you can get a handful of food to feed the fish. I think a lot of people don't realize there's a room to check out with other fish, turtles and more. I grew up going to this hatchery as a child. This place hasn't changed much (though I have to admit that's a good thing!) There are several trout ponds with trout of various ages. It is fun to see the fish grow as they get older. There is also the outdoor warm water pond with long nose gar and sturgeon. The outdoor turtle pond is amazing in the summer! There are so many turtles, it is fun to see them all. The indoor buildings have amphibians, fish and turtles. I especially like the baby turtle exhibit! They also have various seasonal activities for all ages. In the summer they had sprinklers set up for the kids, they have a Turtle Hatch day to celebrate the new baby turtles, and even a birthday party for the baby trout! They do a "Haunted Hatchery", that while not "scary" is fun for all ages. All in all, this a great little place to visit! The best part, in my opinion, is feeding the fish. For $0.25, you can use the machines, or for $4.00 you can buy a "Funtainer" full of food (~1Lb) and the for $3.00 get a refill. This is is best option, especially if you have children as feeding the fish never gets old. I dare say even the adults will want to feed the fish endlessly! In addition to all of this there is also a church with a pond that is free to visit. There is also a trail that can be hiked. The trail is maintained by the Nature Conservancy. It is not a long or overly strenuous trail. Depending on the age and fitness of the hiker, the trail can be done in half an hour. The trail is a circle that leads near the pond, as well as being able to sit and enjoy various views of the pond. On a warm and sunny day, you may even be able to see turtles basking on logs. The trail is free, you just need to leave your license at the admission booth in exchange for the key. It is a nice and quiet hike. read more

This is a cool fish hatchery and a second-rate aquarium. The cost per adult is something like $6. There's a number of different breeding pools and it was interesting to learn about how they raise fish. I even liked feeding the fish using their gumball machines that dispense fish food for $.25. The fish (mostly trout) go pretty crazy when you throw the food into the pools. There are several inside buildings that make up the aquarium. They got mostly fish and turtles with a couple of salamanders. There isn't a lot kept so don't expect to spend more than an hour or two here. read more

Ok, this place is awesome bottom line. I will explain several facts I have learned talking with the employees and from my personal knowledge as student of marine biology. They are not cramped, they are held in those areas for less than a month. there for less than a month. The wounds are caused by the accidental scratch that always occurs, and the aggressive nature of the trout. This place is awesome, you can rent poles, buy bait a fish. each fish costs $4 no matter the size. Its a whole lot cheaper and fresher than any fish market. Come here awesome place, a non profit organization. Their main goal is to educate people about trout. Fun for the whole family! read more
