We were coming back from DC and per our usual ritual bought a batch of Georgetown Cupcakes to our friends in Lumberton. Strike number one against this place is that we actually had the gold standard of cupcakes to compare them to in the house that night. My friend had purchased four cupcakes from this place after a short day trip to Fayetteville and offered them to us as a taste test. The flavors she had were red velvet, strawberry, banana budding, and some type of double chocolate. Second strike against this place is the cupcakes weren't all the nice to look at. It looked like a 6 year old that overdosed on Ritalin helped their mom frost them. Now on to the taste test: 1. Red Velvet - Can't blame them for not getting this one right since most places don't. The frosting was sweet enough to induce a diabetic coma. The cake didn't taste like red velvet at all. Just not good at all. 2. Strawberry - would it really hurt this place to go out and get real strawberries? For $3 a pop I need real ingredients not imitation flavors. The artificial strawberry flavor was so strong and fake that it could have fronted as one of Amy Winehouse's notoriously bad weaves. You will need plenty of drink to wash the taste out of your mouth. You can get away with low quality materials at a bake sale but not at a gourmet cupcake place. 3. Chocolate Cupcake - when I took my first bite of this one I was confused. How you make a chocolate cupcake without any flavor is beyond my comprehension. I have heard of flourless chocolate cake but never flavorless chocolate cake. 4. Banana Budding - Suffers from imitation flavors again. At least it was moist but not much else to say. The third strike is obviously paying MORE money than Georgetown Cupcakes for something far less superior. To be fair I didn't really visit the place itself so I can't comment on customer service or the shop itself. For that reason I will give them a 2 stars and not a one star. If you go buy only one cupcake to try. You may find yourself disappointed by getting a half dozen.
