I live near College Cyclery and needed a a quick flat repair on my folding bike. Well, they did a great job with the flat but now my brake cables are all twisted and the brake pads on both tires are in a death grip on my rims. I called College Cyclery and explained the issue - and was told I'd have to pay for the privilege of having them undo their own weirdness. So much for convenience! Have had two excellent interactions with College Cyclery! They are the most friendly people ever. At first I went in because I needed to replace my bike tire tubes, and mistakenly got mountain bike tubes instead of road bike, I'm not much of a thinker sometimes. Bringing the tubes back without a receipt, they immediately exchanged them for the correct tubes no questions asked. That same bike needed some serious maintenance. Brought it in and they remembered me from the previous tube fiasco, and showed me everything that they were going to fix. During this visit someone brought in a wheel that needed a very small amount of maintenance and they did it free of charge (it took between 5-10 seconds), such fantastic customer service! While I like the idea of the new bike projects starting up around town, I feel like they're often not for schmucks like me. I'd rather bring my bike in and have super friendly experts use new parts and really get these things spinnin', and I will be choosing College Cyclery every time. read more

I own a Trek Navigator not a top of the line bike by any means but its my transportation on many occasions so i need it to ride correctly. I have been to College Cyclery twice once for a flat tire there was a tall blonde lady that was very helpful she even mounted my bike lock i bought from another store in Las Vegas. I went back yesterday to fix my seat post holder that i broke using a tool for leverage (dumb i know) i am known for breaking things not fixing them so this came as no surprise to the wife. Anyway.. Jake was at the counter asked me how he could help he took off the seat post noticed my sitting position was high asked if that was right i forgot to mention my seat needed to come down he adjusted that fixed my seat post, tightend seat to a better position and didnt charge any labor! Jake is awesome and highly recommend seeing him if you go! I would give 5 stars but the Yelp page hours say 9am opening but the store had a make shift sign adjustment stating 10am hopefully read more

I've been there 4 times in the last 6 months, the first two times to purchase thorn resistant tires(26 in mtb specialized crossroads w/flake jacket, then a 26 in mtb specialized crossroads w/armadillo protection). These tires are rock solid for mtb and never allowed any goat head thorns to ever get close to the tube. Get what u pay for. the 3rd time to adjust my rear derailleur and hanger, quick and easy, problem solved. Today was about replacing my bb, get me the part I'll fix it, plus numerous fix it stuff to carry with me. when it comes to parts and components I've always left with a smile on my face and wallet. read more

I'm a former trip leader for a bike adventure company, so spent years fitting, tuning and fixing bikes. This past weekend I went with my girlfriend to see about fixing a bent rim on a wheel as well as purchasing a shorter stem to accomodate her wish for a shorter cockpit and relaxed position on the bike. The wheel, a Ksyrium Elite had a sizable dent, but for $25 the owner (Randy) said he'd assess the damage and look at bending it back...fair enough. When we broached the subject of a shorter stem, he insisted on a $125 fitting. I said that we'd just like to look at shorter, more upright stems and would see what works. He threw a mini-tantrum. Like a child, he agrily throw our some measurment specs to confuse and bewilder me saying, "well if YOU'RE the fitting expert, YOU tell ME what she needs!". I could have talked threaded vs. threadless/ rises and diameters with him for hours, but just smiled and we left the store. Today she got word that the $25 was wasted as they don't think they can help the wheel. Again, fair enough. We'll go back to get it and use it as a wall hanging...but we're DONE with this bike shop. IRONICALLY, she bought a new Bianchi here in 2002 directly from Randy (the owner). He put her 5'4 frame on a 54 cm bike. After 5 years of trying to adjust to a bike that was too big for her, she sold it. He was either unloading a bike he had built and ready to roll out, or isn't the wiz at expensive fitting he claims to be. Either way, avoid this place. If the owner weren't wrong enough, the traffic, neighborhood and parking here is horrific. read more

I don't get the super negative reviews. I've only dealt with them twice - once because I saw they carried Nutcase helmets (which I ended up finding super uncomfortable and therefore not buying) and another because Axiom's website said they were a distributor for their stuff. With the Nutcase helmet, I thought I was a small but it was pretty tight around my noggin' and I sized up. It was too big, and this was due to all the ones that were out having the thinnest pads in them. The gentleman helping me put the thicker pads in, and while it fit better, this line of helmets just wasn't for me. As far as the Axiom basket goes, that was over the phone. I called to see if they had it and they did not but said they could order almost anything. I was told they'd call me back with the price once they found it, and they called back within 5 minutes. After shipping the basket hit the near $100 mark so I skipped it, but they were never anything but considerate and willing to provide service. read more

There is just something awesome about a local bike shop. Specifically, it seems like this shop is staffed by a crew that actually likes what they do. There are maybe four or five guys that work here and it has been the same people for as long as I've been going there. They are knowledgable, friendly, and willing to help. For a small store, they keep a decent selection of bikes. When buying a bike, they show you options, explain the differences, work on getting the fit right, and encourage you to take the bikes for test rides. As a side note, I still don't think I've ever figured out their regular hours. read more

Took my old KHS in for a tune up. It was a mess. Had it done in 24 hours, I forgot how nice it can ride until I got it back all tuned up. Cleaned and waxed, too. I had never been to this shop before but I was riding my mountain bike downtown around 6:45 P.M. when my chain broke by the courthouse. I called College Cyclery and after about 20 rings a woman answers and informs me that they are closed but asks me if I need any help. I explain my situation and she says to come by and she would sell me a chain. Turns out she found some quick links to get me up and running again she also let me wash my grease stained hands and gave me some latex gloves to wear during my sidewalk repair. I can't remember her name she is a tall beautiful blonde and very nice, kind and helpful. She earned a lifelong customer. I can't thank you enough!!! read more

I will not return to this shop nor do I recommend to others...! While cycling through Reno today on my fixie my front, left, axle nut vibrated off. I stopped at College Cyclery for a replacement, being the first shop available. Mr. Collins charged me $2.98 plus tax for this axle nut I could have purchased for .25 to .50 cents at a hardware store... For safety reasons, I reluctantly paid! I will share my experience and educate others of this outrageous experience I encountered here... Unfortunately, that $2.98 will be the last money I spend in this store! I have also bought bikes from professional builders in the US and abroad, and at 70 yrs old still ride for fitness and pleasure. There is no question that College is one of the best bike shops I have ever done business with. It has a great selection and Randy, the owner, is one of the best technical bike mechanics around. He knows the business as well as anyone and will take the time to make sure your bicycling experience becomes a bicycling pleasure. I brought my e-bike there to have a software modification performed, which they found out cannot do because of manufacturer's restrictions. I can understand that, but they forced me into doing also a "firmware update" (supposedly necessary) and incorrectly changed the wheel circumference - both of which I did not request and in the end had to pay for. read more

I've been going to this shop for a few years and was pleased with the sales and service. Recently I inquire about an electric bike for my wife's birthday. I was given information and a quote for an electric bike I had not known about. After researching the bike online it seemed like a good fit for my wife. I called back a few days later and told them I was interested in purchasing the bike but all the review web sites I looked at said the suggested retail price was $400 cheaper than their price. This was not an Amazon price. I also contacted bike shops in California (3) and they quoted me the suggested retail price. So I asked the rep at College Cyclery if they could match that and he told me the owner would not reduce the price and informed me their price was the suggested retail price. I told him no worries I always try to support local business and just wanted to give them a chance. I got the bike from a California bike shop with free shipping and a $100 rebate. I've been a customer here off and on since the mid-'70s, but after my most recent visit, I think our relationship is over. Randy and his staff know their stuff, but I just don't need the hassle. I've been riding for nearly 45 years, and while I'm always willing to hear good advice, I know pretty well what works for me and what I want. College Cyclery is the Jekyll and Hyde of bike shops. Brennan and Chad, the two mechanics, are great. They are both professional, knowledgeable, courteous, and awesome mechanics. The owner, on the other hand, is an odd duck who doesn't seem to know very much about bikes and should be avoided. I believe all of the negative comments about College Cyclery on Yelp! are the result of customer interactions with the owner. I would advise potential customers of College Cyclery to do what I do and deal directly with the mechanics Chad and Brennan, avoiding the owner whenever possible. I want to emphasize that I have been very, very happy with all of the service that Chad and Brennan have performed on my bike... read more

I agree with Jules D. in that one could definitely expect to pay between 50-75% more on bicycles and accessories than comparable stores. It's one of those shops that you really want to like but you just can't bring yourself to doing so because of their business practices. read more

I went to them for a saddle, it was not in stock, so it was a special order. Buying a special order from them was a mistake. It did not work for me, but when I asked to exchange it for a different saddle, the owner refused to help in any way... no partial exchange, no consignment, nothing. He tried to insist that bike fit was the issue and offered to sell a fitting, even though I have already had a pro fit with this bike. So I bought the replacement saddle online and have been satisfied with the result, no imaginary fit issue with this one. There was no benefit in using this shop versus the online shop, so why bother, there are better shops in town. read more

My wife and I purchased two mountian bikes from a staffer at College Cyclery in 2001 after she took considerable time answering my questions about what the differences are at the different price levels. Because we had a good experience we bought two road bikes from the owner, Randy, a year later. He spent a lengthy time during two separate appointments fitting each of us to the bikes and a later follow up appointment with my wife to change the stem for a better fit when she found she had some back pain after long rides. These were $1200 bikes back then. Certainly not high end machines, but all of the fitting was included at no charge as with any road bikes they sell. After a collision with a large dog, I got to know the mechanic Chad when he built a custom replacement wheel for me. A couple of years later with a 1000 miles on the tires, I purchased two new upgrade wheels, a new chain and upgrade cassette from Chad who installed them. I have never had a bad experience at the shop in many visits over many years. Just two weeks ago a woman I work with had two tubes replaced in her mt. bike there. Thorn resistant tubes were stickered at $15 each and were installed for her at no charge while she waited. I read Domininque L.'s review while I was writing this. I have been to this place a few times and every time i'm there i get awful service. They are rude, condescending, slow and just not helpful. There is one woman there and is nice and easy to deal with but every other individual i have dealt with has been awful. I like to shop only local so that's why i've tried this place a couple times but never again. Go to Velo Reno, they are awesome. read more
