It's been a hot minute since I've seen a movie at this location. Honestly, I try to support our local independent theaters as much as I can. That said, it was Thanksgiving weekend and Moana 2 was definitely not playing at any of my go-to spots. Enter Marcus Sycamore Cinema. I popped online, easily selected our matinee seats. I liked that we (post pandemic) have assigned seats. So much easier with kids. You don't have to get there a million years early and you can ensure you have an aisle when they inevitably have to go the bathroom at the most important, action packed time. We arrived at the cinema about five minutes early and found no one taking tickets? So we just walked back. This was odd to me. Though it was insanely dark and hard to find the aisle numbers, due to no lighting-- we found our seats fine. The concessions were priced as you'd assume and were tasty. I do love me a super buttery, salty popcorn. The seats and venue itself was well maintained and comfy. No complaints! Bathrooms were nearby and clean. Though, as a slender human, I will say those stalls are even hard for me to navigate. Overall, good bang for buck. No complaints! read more

I went here to see a movie on a day off from the work training program here in Iowa city. This theater is in a dying mall, like many such places around the country. The movie theater itself is fine. The hot dog was made to order and was pretty bad. the bun was cold and chewy. The hot dog tasted terrible. Everything else was fine. The people working here are pleasant and trying. It's not their fault that these kind of theaters, in malls, are dying out with the malls. At least i hot to see my movie. read more

Prices at concession stand are ridiculously high! When it costs over 45 dollars for two large popcorns and four drinks I would rather go out to eat! The bathroom has not been renovated since the theaters opened and are way out dated and the stalls are too crowded! read more

They've remodeled the lobby area! Much more inviting than before. Brighter, candy is well-stocked, and the theaters are cleaner than they were two years ago. New management? The mall seems to have picked back up a little bit since Ollie's Bargain Outlet opened. Still our go-to movie theater in town. read more

The good thing about this theatre is that it's walking distance from my house. The seats are not comfortable to sit in for 2 hrs and when the movie was quiet we could hear loud singing from the movie in the theatre next to us. Worth a cheap ticket but wouldn't pay full price. read more

I paid 30$ for a movie I had to leave halfway through. Every. Single. Person. Was so disrespectful and rude, and the workers didn't do anything about it. There was a woman talking on the phone, on speaker, for 45 minutes straight, there was a family that was loudly talking the entire time, a woman just scrolling Facebook with full brightness and taking photos with flash (I have seizures so this is incredibly rude), a child kicking seats and throwing popcorn, etc. During the entire movie. Unbelievable. I paid 30$ and drove an hour for this. 0/10, will never come back to this theater. read more

I know you gotta pay for your recent renovations as you try to justify staying open and being the anchor location in a dying mall, but you gotta do better, especially since Fridley is opening a multiplex in Tiffin in a few months and,more than likely, this location and the Coral Ridge one are going to be HURTING very soon. read more

This place has gotten a facelift. More screens, comfy reclining seats-- It even rivals Coral Ridge! They even serve White Castle burgers! I don't think they even have White Castles in the rest of Iowa. read more

Great theater, comfortable seats and they have deals basically everyday of the week. Can't wait to start my new schedule so can I get back to enjoying $5 Tuesdays! The staff is always friendly and seem to enjoy their jobs. If you're vaccinated and comfortable being in public, I fully suggest you get back to experiencing the magic of movie theaters. Last night I went to the Sycamore Mall Marcus Theatres to watch Oppenheimer. The movie overall was good but the power went out 15 minutes before the movie was over. There was no apology for the outage and it took over 30 minutes to resume the movie. In the middle of the wait, the movie started again with no picture, just sound, which further hindered my experience. When the movie was resumed, it was resumed 20 minutes too early. The workers did not seem to care whether or not the movie was in the correct place. Somehow the surround sound never got turned back on either, which is just embarrassing. After the movie, there were no vouchers to rewatch the movie for free, no reimbursements, or any sort of verbal apology. I'm happy to say I will not be returning to that embarrassment of a movie theatre. read more

I enjoy this theater, they seem to have a few extra movies that you want to see compared to other places in the area. The theater is clean, has plenty of space, and concessions are reasonable enough here. For me the fact that they seem to make an effort to play different movies that are harder to see in the area is a plus for me. read more

Thanks to Movie Pass, I'm at this theater several times a week. Customer service is always great. Most of the time you buy tickets from a spot next to the concessions, but they're great about actually opening up the ticket booth and staffing it with several employees if the theater is busy. Most of the theaters have roomy, comfortable, reclining seats. Then there are a few of the theaters that have older seats that aren't nearly as comfortable. I've only been in these older theaters when I'm checking out movies that have been out or weeks and are about to be phased out, so I'd recommend seeing movies sooner rather than later. The popcorn is always great, you get free refills on larges, and their rewards program is A+. Love this theater and really glad to have it in Iowa City! read more

I visit Marcus theaters a lot for their Tuesday $5 movies and Thursday $5 movies for students. Their rewards program is nice because you can get a free small bag of popcorn on these days and you get a $5 gift card when you spend $100 (which is not that great, but better than nothing). They have all the movies that I would want to see and they are in a good location. However, I have had a few irritating experiences here. First, their set up is incredibly inefficient. At peak times, there is a line out the door to buy tickets, and only one person working the booth. After this line, you have to stand in the concessions line for legitimately 15 minutes to get the free popcorn deal. The staff works hard to keep everything moving, but if they set up bags of popcorn ahead of time or had more staff at busy times it would be a lot better. Second, there was a fire alarm at the movie I attended yesterday. Everyone left the building for about 10 minutes and then we waited another 15-20 for it to restart. When it finally started up again, the sound didn't work for the first few minutes and it was way past where the movie had left off. No one apologized or offered any compensation which was annoying. A different time, there was a 5 minute pause during the previews. They have some technological issues they need to figure out. Overall, it is fine. I will still go back, but I would recommend arriving a little early if you are going at a popular time and be aware that there are sometimes glitches. read more

Went across town to see a matinee, only to sit in a pitch-black theater for 20 min after the movie was supposed to start. No one ever came to give us a heads up so Went out to the concessions and the man working knew nothing about nothing. Asked for a manager....she was rude, evasive and unapologetic..."couldn't get movie to download"?? Lady at the ticket booth didn't know how to give me a receipt. Just a suggestion, but I would spend the money that you're using on re-decorating on training. Won't go back. read more

We got to the front and the cashier at the ticket stand was very friendly. She reminded my boyfriend and I to get our complementary popcorn for student Thursday's! We got to our seats and about 10 minutes later we saw paper hitting the screen and ice flew into our popcorn. We looked behind us and there were two kids in the back. We decided that since our movie was discounted that we would take our snacks and go home. I wanted to stop at the front to let the cashier know what had happened before we left. She said "wait one minute", next thing I know the manger came out and gave us a refund on our purchased tickets, offered us to go see a different movie and even gave us movie passes for our next visit! They handled the situation better than I would have imagined. We love coming to the Sycamore Cinema for our weekly date nights and we can't wait to see our next movie. Nice little movie house on the outskirts of Iowa City. If you are in town for a college event, this place is a very short drive from downtown to see a movie. They have a number of screens...good popcorn...and they have that lounge chair type seating, at least in the theater we were in. If I could give negative stars I would. Not only is this a severely poorly run theater but it is filthy to boot. Overflowing trash cans on a slow night and carpets that had not seen a thorough cleaning in a dogs age. Cleaning supplies left in the middle of doorways for people to trip on after leaving a dark theater. But the smell emanating from the ladies room makes one wonder if the sewer line broke. And the unmistakable smell of dope coming from the men's room was unreal. When brought to the managers attention he was unable to provide answers or make it right. Will not be returning. In the age of COVID one would think to be open to the public cleanliness would be at the forefront. Disappointed!! read more

When i get my friday paychecks, i pick out 2 or 3 movies to see, go home get sellp, then saturday morning i go watch 2 or 3 movies, 1 after the other ! If i get off work fridays without any fatigue then i will watch the last 2 or 3 movies (in a row) B4 the theatre closes ! Multiplex Theaters are cool ! When they "dim" the lights, they really mean keep them on for the whole movie. It was not a pleasant experience to watch the movie with the lights on. Also chairs are not comfortable unless you have your feet on the seat in front of you. read more

This is my neighbourhood theater. The theatre offers current movies with a good variety of showing times. Great specials every week for the budget friendly viewer. A big thanks to the staff for finding my wallet and so appreciated picking it up it the next day, every dollar still there. read more

I love it. Lots of theaters close to me. Great Marcus perks, free popcorn on $5 Tues. & free soda refills anytime. Most people don't know they have closed caption hand-heads and awesome headphones for hearing assistance. Just ask. I was impressed. I am happy it's here on the Eastside. read more

The best spot in Iowa City to see a movie. $5 movies on Tuesday and on Thursday $5 movies with your college ID. I love the size of this theater it feels a lot more spacious than the other Marcus Theater in Coralville. Prices are fair, and I highly recommend signing up for their rewards, nothing is better than buying tickets and unexpectedly getting free tickets. Also the mall this theater is located at has less traffic than the one in Coralville so you're least likely too ever have a scenario where there are no tickets available which has happened to me at the other location. All in all great movie going experience, bathrooms could be a little cleaner! read more

4.5/5 - A clean theater, it doesn't smell funny, nice size screens, comfortable seats, friendly and polite employees, sadly the only theater that shows limited films in Iowa City area; usually a month or so later than the release dates. Terrible customer service. I was at a movie this afternoon and a fire broke out in one of the restaurants that shares the mall with the theater, and not a single staff member came in to say anything was going on; we just heard shouting in the hall and another patron ran in and told us to get out. By that point, the fire had been contained, but the power in the theaters all went out so the movies were all cut short. Then, although there were 5 or 6 people working, only one was issuing refunds and the rest of the staff was just standing around. Awful afternoon, movie cut short, and didn't even get a refund. Never going back to this theater. This staff needs some serious training. read more

Marcus theater is great.They have 12 showings all different times and some in 3D. Daily specials include afternoon matinee, Tuesday $5 all day and free pop corn with card.They have cards which you earn points for free items and 100 points you get a free movie.Thursday is college student day for $5. read more

Dated, the theatre smells like pee. We went there to watch Harry potter finale in 3D, the glasses they gave out were in clear plastic wrap, not the ones I usually use. They wouldn't stay on my face, so I have to hold them the entire time. The movie looked blurry the entire time, was it because of the knockoff glasses? The worst part: there was a dead bug shadow on one side of the screen for half of the movie, totally grossed me out. Worst movie experience ever. I should have asked for full refund! read more

This theater seems to have all the new movies! The concession stand is usually clean, the restrooms are usually clean and the theater is usually clean. The seats are not designed to cuddle BUT they are big and comfortable. Essentially they are better built for action films! The theater is divided into two parts. The old 6 and the new 6. If your movie is in the expanded part of the theater, you'll be much happier. I have no complaints with the older side but the new screens look better and sound amazing! read more
