I almost don't want to write this review, seeing as it's hard enough to get an appointment as is, but given how good Trista and Columbo are they deserve the praise. As a guy that has never went to a salon to see a stylist and always stuck with his afro/fades, I was a bit at a loss of what to do, especially without dear old mom at my side. Scouring the internet for stylists that had experience with textured hair, I contacted a few, but ultimately found hope in the form of the Hair Social. Seeing fellow POC raving about Trista, I decided to go with her. After getting in contact with her, we set up a consulting session. Meeting her during our consultation I felt at ease instantly, she was very welcoming and wanted to understand exactly what I was going for. Seeing what I wanted she gave me a couple of options while asking me about how long I wanted to keep the style, and what kind of maintenance I would do to maintain it, to narrow down what would be best for me. Her "can do" attitude was rejuvenating, given that another stylist I contacted basically said what I wanted couldn't be done. We scheduled two appointment the week before Christmas, one for her husband, Columbo, the barber and co-owner of the business, whom I would get the first part of my style from, and the other for her. Both her and her husband are appointment only, but she was very flexible in regards to my schedule. You can tell that Columbo and Trista are a solid team. As soon as I walked in for my haircut with him, he knew what hair style I wanted and how to go about it, given that I talked with Trista about it. He had skill! So much in fact, that I almost started changing my mind about getting my hair styled after seeing the reactions to my hair cut! The next day during my styling session with Trista she went over what she was doing as she was doing it, so I wouldn't be left in the dark about what was going on. We talked like we were old friends, no awkward silences or anything. When she was finished, I was in awe of my hair. Months of growing it out and it was finally the curly masterpiece I envisioned it to be! All for $110 (and that's including generous tips). I've gotten sooooo many compliments on my hair, it's ridiculous. After our session, she even sent me an e-mail of what products to get to maintain my hair and an approximate time of when I should come back to check my hair's progress. Trista is amazing! I have mixed hair so it can be daunting to try and find someone who understands what my hair needs. I got my hair cut and deep conditioned on my first visit and then got my hair colored with peek a boo blue highlights on my second visit. I love how my hair turned out and can't wait to keep experimenting with it in the future w/ Trista. She saw my vision and didn't crush my hopes when I told her I wanted blue hair. To me, having a stylist who keeps it real but also tries to make the customer happy is a dime a dozen. The vibe of the shop is hip and fresh too so you feel like you're in a place where people walk out looking like their best. I love my hair. Definitely recommend this salon! read more

Colombo is the man! Not only does he cut a mean under cut--I enjoy our manly conversations haha. Anything from food, sports, music, but mostly about the newest food spots in San Diego. If you want that fade done correctly or that under cut. You have to see Colombo. I'm very picky about my barbers and I've been to almost every popular shop in SD and Colombo understands what I want. He also does a razor line up, which is the only thing I do. If your barber isn't using a razor to line you up, it's time to find a new barber. Give Colombo a try and if you have a girl, there is also a salon toward the pack of the shop. I never have issues with parking. There is plenty of street parking and rear parking. read more

The Hair Social is my go-to spot for the freshest cuts. Rose Jasso (formerly of Moose's and Eastlake Barbershop) now cuts/styles hair here by appointment. Like many other gentleman, I come here every two weeks. This place is a hidden gem near the College area (across from the Bank of America on El Cajon Blvd). Rose is funny, beautiful, smart PLUS skillful with her shears, blades and clippers. She is the only stylist/barberette that I have ever followed to another shop. That says a lot about her talents for anyone who doesn't know me personally. And for my fellow Asians, yes you...if you're having a tough time finding someone who can tame your hair like Bruce Lee kicks ass, you've come to the right place. Look no further than Rose Jasso of the Hair Social. Her cuts will not only make you look good but also make you feel good too. Let's face it fellas, a woman knows what looks good on a man and we can all use a woman's perspective when it comes to our looks. The shop is hip with a cool vibe and very clean just like the shop owner Colombo Roc (who himself is a master barber). Music is always on point. I've been looking for a good place to get my haircut for a while since I've moved down from LA... I used to get my haircut in Ktown all the time since they know Asian hair the best. Hands down this is the only place is the ONLY place I will get my cut in SD. I've tried out a few places here but I left unfulfilled. Not only does this place know how to cut hair, u get an ice cold beer to sip while u get your cut. I have never heard of such things at a haircut shop?!? They also sell the dopest shirts, hats, and hair products on the side. This place is very modern and hip. The owner Columbo has done a terrific job setting up the shop! I've been thinking... I'm changing my 4-star review to a 5-star review, as I'm sure Trista could charge a bit less (like other salons) if she had us waiting 2+ hrs because she booked 2-3 other people at the same time (so she could increase her daily revenue). Nah, no thanks--I prefer a stylist who's always on time, isn't running back and forth between clients, and doesn't have me sitting under the dryer (for 1.5 hrs) so my "hair can dry". There's also a very peaceful feeling in her salon... It's very well decorated and you don't have people yapping about other people's business. Lol. Best barbershop experience I've had. The owner Columbo is a ridiculously good barber who 's extremely professional and always makes sure you come out looking fresh and clean. The shop has a great modern feel with a little old school barbershop flare to it. To sum it all up, this place reminds me of a quote from the movie Barbershop "See, in my day, a barber was more than just somebody who sit around in a FUBU shirt with his drawers hanging all out. As with most of my reviews, this one is long overdue. The Hair Social is one of the few establishments around that has earned and should keep its perfect 5 star rating. The level and blend of customer service, personality, aesthetics, and talent on display is exceedingly high and rare in this area of San Diego. The shop itself is beautiful and classy, a touch of East Coast flair with West Coast heart. Colombo and Trista (his wife who has her own salon in her own section of the shop) are extremely nice, outgoing people that love their clients. Colombo himself is one of the most friendly people I've ever met in my life, which is GREAT for anyone that needs a barber they can actually talk to about ANYTHING. I went to see about getting Hair extensions in my hair because it in the growing phase I wanted something I can use to put my hair in a ponytail until it grows out to the length I needed. Trista did an absolutely amazing job with my hair! I received tons of compliments. I needed a press and trim and unlike most hairstylist she understood my needs. My last haircut was awkward and Trista was able to actually look cute, without chopping off huge amounts. My hair retained it's natural curl pattern after the press. My mom (who isn't easy to please) could not stop raving about the style and plans to go to Trista from now on. I wanted to rate this place since my friend recommended my daughter 5 year old daughter get her hair pressed here. But I couldn't remember the name.... But anyways, Lena did a really good with my daughter's hair (so much so that my daughter only wants me and Lena touching her head lol) which is very coarse and thick but very beautiful when properly taken care of. She took her time and the end results were flawless. I asked how long it would last she said maybe 2 weeks. Psssshhhh my daughter's natural hair was laid for a whole two months. I was extremely shocked and best of all no heat damage and it reverted right back to its natural state after the 2 month period. My Turn: I decided to book an appointment with Lena. I got my hair done in Feb I believe and my hair is still straight in April. Like that's talent! The atmosphere is calm and it's not your typical salon. Lena takes her time and every time I've come in she is only working on one client at a time. She listens to your needs and really focuses on healthy hair. Prices are reasonable and my daughter and I have found our new stylist! I just have to remember not to try and book the day before lol. I've been going to Jonathan for the past 6 months. Through both of his locations. Not only is he personable, but he "gets" hair. Not a lot of barbers or whatever you'd classify him as, actually put emotional effort into their jobs. They just sit you down, ask what you want, and do it. Since day one he's offered suggestions, opinions, and had a general sense of care towards me looking my best. It's hard to find a Black hair stylist in East County (or rather a beautician that specializes in ethnic hair, to be PC). I wore braids for a little over a year, and used a home relaxer to straighten my extra virgin hair after I took my braids out 3 weeks ago. The relaxer took very well on my edges but not so much the last 3 or 4 inches of my hair, and didn't want to keep relaxing over it so I called Hair Social and spoke to Trista about my issue. My appointment was today, and she offered me a couple of options as to what I could do. I decided to let her, the professional, relax what I couldn't. After she relaxed, washed, flat ironed, trimmed and styled my hair, I left feeling fly as hell, and was relieved that none of my hair needed to be chopped off. I like a beautician who offers you options as to salvaging damaged hair versus getting scissor happy and saying they have to cut it off. She was also quick, but efficient. There are shops that have you in there for 4 hours because they do more gossiping than hair...not this one. I trust Trista with my hair and I will never touch a home relaxer again. If you live in the East County/College area, check this place out. There's even a barber shop inside, so ladies, while you're getting right, so can your man, lol! read more
