They did a good job, you pay well for it, but it's worth it if you have solid brass fixtures to have them

We recently brought in 2 brass lamps along with various finials to have old ugly lacquer removed, then burnished and re-lacquered. We picked up the lamps way sooner than we ever anticipated and looked more beautiful than they have in 25 years! We were so impressed with the service and pricing of the Colonial Brass folks! Considering they've had to build back their business after having had their previous facilities burn to the ground around a year or so ago, I'm so grateful they are still committed to providing their many metal finishing services. I've used them a couple of times over the past 15-20 years to refurbish some expensive door hardware. Way cheaper than replacing. Service has always been outstanding. And fast. The brass looks brand new again. Would recommend to anyone to have their hardware refurbished while their door is being refinished. Just need to maintain it so it lasts. Clean regularly. They told me to apply some Turtle Wax after the lacquer is gone. EDIT - MARCH 18 - JUST GOT AN EMAIL ABOUT A CATASTROPHIC FIRE THEY SUFFERED. I have a 26" copper tray that my parents bought in Iran in the 1970s. The rim had been severely bent during a move. I don't think it had ever been polished. I took it to Colonial Brass to have the rim repaired, the tray polished, and hangers added to the back so it could be hung on a wall. It looks stunning!! My sister has another tray, and she is now eager to have hers restored and polished. read more

I had one brass candlestick holder (out of four) that had tarnished and wanted to get it refinished to match the others. When I took it to the shop, they recommended I refinish all four so they would all look the same. So, I decided to have all four refinished. WOW! I'm glad I did. Not only did all four refinished candlestick holders look beautiful, they all had a "mirror" finish to them, and they even added a felt bottom to all four. My mother who is 75 years old gave me a silverware set that she inherited by her Aunt over 40 years ago. My great aunt received this silverware set as a wedding gift in the early 40's. This set was manufactured by 1847 Roger's Bros and was still housed in the original wooden box. The silverware was severely tarnished. My husband decided to surprise me with the restoration of this set. He took it to Colonial Brass who did an EXCEPTIONAL job restoring this silverware. I got an antique cast iron fireplace surround off of Ebay, just fell in love with the piece. This was an adventure as well as I had to drive from Houston, TX to Pittsburg, PA to pick it up from seller, but it was all worth it. Next was to decide how to approach restoration, at some point I was considering DIY sort of project, but after a more detailed research and a referral I've found out this amazing local shop, Colonial Brass in Houston specializes mostly in brass and such, but when I brought in the cast iron piece and explained what I'm looking for, these guys didn't hesitate to take the project. We've discussed details, and the wait has begun for me. Knowing how busy they are, and not being in a rush myself, 2 months later I called to check on the progress. I was told they have done a couple attempts and got frustrated with the end result and didn't have a plan at this time. I gave them some more time and called back again, Edward asked me to come see what he had done so far. What I've seen was a finished small part of entire piece, and it was beautiful. At that point I could tell the guys are just perfectionists. I've assured the result looks great and Edward took another week or so to complete the entire piece. The end result was astonishing, I totally loved it and it was well worth the wait. Although these guys spent so much effort, they charged only what they have estimated originally, and it was a VERY reasonable estimation to begin with. Awesome. I have an antique brass and iron bed purchased for £10 in England. Turns out from 1880-1890. Which they determined from engraving on the caster. Who knew? The iron had been painted black in the 70s, in much need of overhaul. Brass was dented, missing some small decorative pieces, others were loose. They were friendly, very approachable, helpful when I called to check on bed. Gave me a fair estimate (I suspect as had no idea). Bed was ready when promised. It is beautiful!! Painted, baked on paint, white, brass beautifully polished. They found matching or comparable missing pieces, banged out some dents, etc. My bed is fantastic. Thank you, Colonial Brass. Took my door hardware and numbers from the front of my house here to have it polished and lacquered. They do a great job! I've done it before when my House was painted years ago. They have a professional atmosphere with a quality service. I will continue to bring my antiques (which I have done in the past) here and trust them fully! I can't say enough great things about them. They do beautiful work. I took in an old Solid Brass Candlelabra Lamp that I bought on Ebay. They were able to able to re weld the light fixture back on the Ladies Head and re Brassed in a very natural finish to still remain antique looking. She is quite ornate and they did a fantastic job. Bering Hardware recommended them to me and they are truly professions in their business. So nice too! read more

Not very pleased with the quality of work. Brought these pulls in for polishing and yet they still have spots that look tarnished. The explanation I was given was that these are nickel plated and what I'm seeing is the raw steel underneath. However, these don't appear to be plated. And they never mentioned that they were when I dropped them off. Seems to me an excuse for shoddy work. Alternative Facts! read more

These guys are truly the BEST when it comes to restoration and I will definitely use them again. Their pricing is great, customer service is great, work is great! An 1800s era piece was severely damaged when shipping it from Houston to California for a customer. The restoration expert, who does this same work, in CA suggested we bring it back to Houston for the cast iron repair. He said, "these are the only guys who can do it in my opinion." It was worth the time, cost, and fight with the pissed off customer to get this repaired correctly. Colonial Brass did a FANTASTIC job with the repair then cleaning it up just enough, but not too much, so it kept it prestige/ luster. Then they helped with advising the crating company the best way to protect it for its return. read more

Don't really write reviews online, in fact this is the 1st I can remember ever...but I'm inspired to say something about my experience at Colonial Brass and it's probably for a different kind of job than they normally do. I recently purchased my dream stereo/home entertainment system with 5.1 sound which includes a "center" speaker. This item required a stand that could sustain the weight of a 40 lb. speaker and I could not find one on the web anywhere (most would not accommodate the weight) that looked halfway decent. I came across an "I-Beam" table at a modern furniture store and thought that something similar would look awesome in my minimalist modern home. I developed a deign sketch for this stand, took it to Ed at Colonial and they had this made (I specified 3/8" steel), finished in a powder coat and called me to pick it up. I had a set of 16 year old metal drawer knobs in safari animal shapes that had once been finished in gold. The gold finish had worn off over the years, and, although the metal was in good shape, the knobs looked dingy. I wanted to reuse the knobs in a new piece of furniture, but I wasn't sure how best to refresh them, so I took them to Colonial Brass. They figured out what the base metal was, and recommended painting. So, I picked a metal paint color, and they prepped the metal and painted the knobs. They look fabulous. Located a brass end piece I have been searching for over the past 25 years. Since I finally realized I will never give my 31-year old daughter a "tea." Cleaned, repaired and lacquered my silver tea service. It now just sits in the dining room and looks beautiful, rather than just sitting and looking dark, dingy, and tarnished. Repaired the iron leg I broke on my Grandmother's pedal sewing machine so it appears to have never been damaged. (I can face my cousins again.)
