I bought an expensive sofa at Roche Bobois about 10 years ago (I would advise you not to buy there - see my Yelp review). About 3 years of gentle use by two adults without children or pets, it looked terrible. I spent 6, yes, 6 years looking for an upholsterer who could recover it for me. My sofa, apparently, had a lot of details that were difficult to replicate. I had all but given up when I happened to find the Upholstery Shop on Yelp. I texted a photo of my sofa to them. I quickly got a response from Chelsea, who is terrific! We discussed those specific features, fabrics, timing, etc. Within a few days, I went to the shop to see some of their fabrics and get more of my questions answered. I received my fabric in a couple of days and then arranged delivery of the sofa to their shop. (This is the only negative thing I'll say about The Upholstery Shop, they do not provide pickup and delivery, you have to do that independently and it costs a lot! I live 9 miles from the store and do not have stairs or anything complicated and it cost $185 + tips each way. Other upholsterers I talked to charged as little as $75/each way). Anyway, my project was completed by Mario, the lead upholsterer. He did a fantastic job! He was able to retain all of the fancy details except for one, due to equipment limitations and I was OK with the option he could provide. He actually explained the structural issues that made the sofa so uncomfortable and how he could fix them. Chelsea is a total rock star and kept me in the loop throughout. I really appreciated her calming nature :) Two weeks later, my sofa was finished and it looks (and feels) fantastic. I found the Upholstery Shop on Yelp as soon as I moved to Houston. I wanted to have my maternal grandmother's and paternal grandfather's chairs reupholstered as my mom just gave them to me when I moved (contingent upon me having them redone). The prices here cannot be beat. They have MANY different fabrics in stock, where the prices are listed for "any chair" or "any sofa". I took four home to decide and then took my chairs in the next week. The only negatives were that it took about 2.5 months to get them back and the delivery charge was higher than anticipated. Would not recommend. Disappointed in accuracy in workmanship, customer service and cost. Two simple 3-4 " thick rectangular cusions for antique Morris chair. Should be simple enough. The seat was great, the back was like a 10" thick puffy pillow totally out of size for the chair. Requested redo with very specific measurement, 3"-4" thick but NO MORE but redone at 6". Full charge for both. They didn't seem to be able to make it to requested measurements. Almost like trial and error but at my expense. The work was done in a timely manner. read more

This review is 3.5 years late, but as I sit here on one of the pair of club chairs this shop reupholstered, I decided to be heard. I had used Upholstery Shop before with decent results, including on this same pair of chairs. I took my own Duralee fabric that I purchased from a decorator and asked for the chairs to be recovered. When they came back they looked horrible -- the cushions were misshaped and on one of them the front welted seams were uneven. My young son had cancer and I was totally exhausted from caring for him and did not have the energy to deal with Peter's insensitivity. My son died sometime around then. My friend convinced me to complain...Peter came and picked up the chairs and when I went in to talk to him about them he denied that anything was wrong with them. I have the pictures of the before and the after to show how bad they were. I didn't have the strength to argue with him, so I agreed to have him remove some of the batting or whatever (to make them not look so lumpy), and walked out. Sometimes people have no idea what someone else is dealing with. To this day we sit on these unevenly upholstered chairs in fabric I paid thousands for. I will never use them again and do not recommend. read more

I brought in outdoor cushions to be reupholstered. I was told the fabric would be ordered and would take 2 weeks to arrive. After three weeks had passed I called and was told "it just arrived today". Great! What a coincidence! I took the cushions in and was told the job would take one week. I informed Peter that I was having a party and needed the cushions back in 10 days. Peter responded "should not be a problem". When I called to check that it was ok to come by and pick them up (one day before the party) I was told they were "working on them now" but that they would not be ready for the party. When I reminded him that I had specifically asked him about the timeline as I needed them for a party, he was defensive and stated he "might" have them done in time. Needless to say, they were not ready. I let 2 weeks pass and hearing nothing from Peter, I called again on the following Thursday. This time I was again told they were "working on them now" and they would be ready "no later than Saturday" and that Peter would "call me when they were ready." Not surprisingly, I did not get a call nor did I get my cushions by Saturday. I again called the following Tuesday and was told they did not order enough fabric, but the new fabric was in and---you guessed it--they were "working on them now". I was able to finally get the cushions one MONTH after I originally dropped them off. I was not offered any apology and was only given the fabric excuse after it was apparent that the job was woefully behind schedule. If you are in a hurry (or even slightly concerned about a timely turn-around) and expect truthful, accurate information about the status of your job, best find another shop. That being said, the quality of the work was very good. read more

It was done very well and I had a more expert eye check it out later and it was done well. The only thing keeping it from 5 stars was a few stray threads. If they tell you 2 weeks switch weeks with the word month. Organization wise they just don't have it together. I was told almost all the excuses written in other reviews, from working on it now to we didn't order enough material, applied to my order. The guy who runs this place is a complete tool. I walk in, give him my name, and he says he has no idea what I had in there, and could I come in back and help him look through all his crap to find it. So I go in back and the place is a complete mess and I look for 15 minutes until I finally find it. I am completely serious. The whole time the tool in a t-shirt is cracking stupid, unfunny jokes with his flunky stock boy. The guy is as funny as a ham sandwich. Absolutely no customer service. Rude. Disrespectful. Very, very, very average work and way overpriced. Doesn't even say thank you for your business, makes it a point not to say it. Like I said, a real tool. It's the exclamation point to his toolness. Trust me if you give this place one thin dime of your hard earned dough you'll be kicking yourself till Christmas and twice on Easter. These positive review gottta be from employees and relatives. I spent hours attempting to recover a child's wingback chair and finally gave up and decided to pay someone else to do it. I found The Upholstery Shop online, emailed them a photo and received a quote in no time. The price they quoted me was well worth it after the hassle I'd already gone through. I dropped it off that very day and got a call just a couple days later that it was complete. I was a little uncertain about how it would look since it didn't seem to take long to complete but I was pleasantly surprised!! It looked amazing!! They have been "working on" re-upholstering my 2 chairs since March (6 1/2 months) and I still don't have them. They did such an awful job on their first attempt to re-upholster the chairs (which took them 4 months). I will also add that the chairs were dirty when they delivered them the first time. I sent them back because they looked awful. The pattern didn't even come close matching up with the seams. They asked me pick out another pattern that would be easier for them to work with. That was 2 1/2 months ago. I was told these chairs would be ready before September. I have called and called and Peter keeps saying "we're working on them". So last week when he told me that again, my sister went over there to see how much they had gotten done. Well, they hadn't even started on them! When I addressed this with Peter he said the fabric had been delivered to the wrong store, but he has it now and will get my chairs done by the weekend. The weekend came and went and no call from Peter. I called Peter today and again I got "we're working on them". Rather than him telling me when they would be ready, I had to ask AGAIN! He gave me an attitude and said the goal was this week which I've heard a few time before from him. Bottom line is you can't believe a word he says. He has a problem with the truth. The company is going down hill fast and I will never use them again. I still have a couch I need re-upholstered. Does anyone have any recommendations for a "good" upholstery shop? read more

Peter was to restuff sofa pillows because they had become lumpy over the years, make 3 new sofa cushions and covers, and fabricate an ottoman. I supplied the fabric and paid half down. Two weeks after the promised delivery, he delivered the 3 back pillows with the same stuffing and just an extra layer of Dacron wrap. The cushion foam was new, but he put my old covers back on. No ottoman. Over the next 3 months, he delivered to my house 3 times, and I went to the shop 10 times. It was never right. Or even close. He didn't cut the cushion piping on the bias, so the edges were wavy and uneven. The cushions were 2" bigger than the originals. When I took them somewhere else, we discovered the Dacron was used, not new, and the new foam was not one piece. Each cushion was 7-8 various sizes of squares and cubes. When the ottoman was delivered 2 months later, the cushion on top was lopsided - short on one side and hanging over the other. Every time I spoke with Peter, he would say it would be ready tomorrow, Friday, Monday, Thursday. On and on. He never called me. I always had to follow up. I finally gave up and paid someone else to redo the cushions and ottoman. AND he returned only 4 yards of the 21 I gave him. I guess they made a lot of cutting errors. At my expense because I had to buy more fabric for the redo. I think they've been around a long time and run by Peter's father. They can't possibly stay in business under Peter's leadership. read more
