This is a very unprofessional establishment. I advise you to not leave your lawn mower for repair or warranty. The lawn mower was taken to Colonial Hardware, and the only thing that was wrong with it is that it overheats and has to cool down before starting again. When the lawn mower was picked back up, the repair person was rude, unprofessional? The lawn mower was left broken completely down, and in a box. This isn't at all how the lawn mower was brought in to be checked. The repair person was cursing and loud in front of other customers. I took my zero turn Toro 42 in to be repaired for not starting also a 50 in same problem. Both said to be ready I get home and try to cut it not cutting evenly check front tire pressure both about a pound need to be 45psi and one back tire 8psi need to be 25psi. Check both blades need to be sharpen. Now I just spent $325.00 to get back I call them and they told me I did not put that on the ticket, but they had no problem taking $50 To check it out. The did the same to my other mower and they sent it home with the battery needing charging . And paid over $225 to bring it home and put on a charger it won't start bad service from the person that service both of them. read more

I always go to colonial for my tools, because the people are nice, no one's pushy and it's a good place to get things when you know what you need. I have shopped at Colonial Hardware for over 25 years. But, recently I was treated very rudely and unprofessional at the repair shop. In the middle of the afternoon one day last week I took my 10hp Tecumseh generator in to have it serviced. I was told the mechanics were not too busy right now and they would get to it the next morning, I explained that it starts and produces electricity ok but I'd like to have a professional look at it. I gave instructions to set the carb, engine speed and volts if needed and to contact me first if any other service needed to be performed. I was contacted at around noon the next day that it was ready for pick up. I was told it was running fine. I paid a $50 service and labor fee, no parts needed. I got home with it and it started on the second pull but it would barely run, it was starving for fuel. I immediately took it back and explained the problem. They kept it. Two days later I did not receive a phone call about it so I went to the shop after lunch. The generator was ready but I was not contacted. This time I cranked it up in the parking lot. It was running real slow and surging a little which means it probably would not put out the proper volts needed. I took it back in the shop, explained what it was doing, and very rudely the mechanic said to me "it's an old generator and it's set as close to factory specs as can be". He said "someone has messed up the governor and carb settings". I said, right, but your the only one that has worked on it, but, no problem, I'll take my business elsewhere. The store owner was sitting there but did not say a word. I had it checked out by another mechanic the next day. I did not have to leave it. He put his tester on it and he had everything set properly in less than 15 minutes and did not charge me a dime. Today I purchased a hundred dollars worth of power cords from one of Colonial's competitors. Could have easily purchased them from Colonial. Colonial's mechanic should have told me on the front end that he new nothing about how to work on a Tecumseh generator and I would not have wasted my time and $50. Totally disappointed in this operation!!! Bought a new echo weed eater from them last year.poor piece of equipment,it quit running after the first season of doing just my personal lawn.took it back for repair they charged me 25 dollars just to look at it,two weeks later the service man called and said it needed a carburetor.120 dollars for the repair.checked on it and had them bring it up front after he told me it was closed up from ethylene gas.it never had ethylene in it.after my inspection it was apparent he never check it out.he read what I listed as the problem and made his call. So for this I now will never do business with them again.. and will tell everyone else I see and talk to to go to Bartlett small engines. Horrible customer service. I called asking to see if they had a tool I needed to fix my mower. The first girl was pleasant and said she'd have to check and would be right back. TWENTY MINUTES LATER someone else picks up and asks who I was holding for. I was busy , didn't have time to troubleshoot chainsaw not running. Called and was told $20 for inspection. Got call back from service guy saying needed new fuel lines and carburetor for $147.00 + tax. We agreed that a Poulan Pro wasn't worth that. Brought the saw home replaced the fuel lines ($6.75) and cleaned carburetor. Fired right up! Why couldn't they have just done that? Probably won't return read more

My father placed an order for a belt for his snapper lawn mower. He went back a week later just to find out they never even placed the order that he paid for. So, he placed the order again. He went back about a week later and picked up this special order belt that was supposed to be specifically for the snapper mower he has. He took the belt home and tried to install it. Come to find out, it is too short to fit the mower. He took the unused belt back to Colonial and Shirley told him they would not be able to refund a used belt. He advised her that it had not been used. She asked him if it was a special order item. He told her they ordered the belt for him. She proceeded to tell him that they do not take back special order products. He is very unhappy with the service he received from Colonial Hardware and will most likely not be going back. It's sad when a business orders a part for you that doesn't fit and then will not even take it back when they were the ones ordering the wrong product. Last night, when I learned of her unfortunate choice, I warned her to be prepared for a financial shock when picking it up! It's barely 12 hours after my warning and she just called me screaming about this company and their unscrupulous fee of $167 to REPLACE A BELT!!! She was IRRATE and I don't blame her! I've done business with Colonial for decades. Bought mowers, leaf blowers, repair services, parts, etc. Have historically been satisfied with my experience. This morning I called and asked for someone that knows a bit about Echo leaf blowers. The guy I got on the phone was disrespectful and downright rude. After asking a reasonable question I got the passive aggressive chuckle and condescending tone which said nothing more than, "Look, y'all. I got an idiot on the phone." Needless to say, not everyone from the floor staff attended the most recent customer service training session back in 1978. Update: Management contacted me, offered a sincere apology, ensured me he'd address the problem, and offered his personal time to discuss my needs. Changed rating from 1 to 4 stars. read more

Have to change my mind on my complaint a couple of days ago. I had earlier complained about the service of not answering their phones. I went in today to get parts for my mower. Mr. Bob was very patient and helpful. He had all my parts and most places don't carry everything you need. But he had it all. Thanks to Bob and the guy who helped me get my parts to the car. I do recommend getting your items here. Haven't had to deal with the repairs from Colonial. But Thank goodness I have someone for that. Not happy with colonial hardware, ive bought almost all my mowers from them. My toro push mower was serviced in march. The mower has been used 3 times since then and today the mower stopped working for no apparent reason. And i was told by them that i would have to pay a drop off fee and that the service that was provided only lasted 30 days....seems to me as a customer and i spend over 23,000 dollars at your store, one would think they could have looked at my mower for free...just saying. I was in town for the weekend to assist my elderly mother-in-law. I carried several window screens to Colonial to be re-screened. The staff was very helpful but stated the work would not be completed until the following Monday (after I left town). I explained my desire to get the screens fixed and installed before I left and I would appreciate it if they could repair them that day. The staff understood my situation and completed the repairs in a couple hours. What a wonderful example of compassion and helping those in the community that need assistance. You can bet I will be visiting Colonial Hardware and not a big-box store the next time I am in town and need supplies for another home project for my mother-in-law. read more

I dropped my mini-riding mower off 3 weeks ago because the transmission seemed to be slipping. When I dropped it off, the tech drove it behind the gate and he also noticed the problem I described. Fast forward 3 weeks and I received a call that my mower was ready. I went to pick it up and learned that they had done NOTHING to my mower. A different tech claimed that there was nothing wrong with my mower. He claimed he could not duplicate the problem. I asked him to drive it while I was there. He did drive it in my presence, and my mower did the same jerking/transmission slipping like activity that it was doing when I dropped it off. He continued to claim that he did not notice a problem. I became frustrated with his incompetence and I took my mower to a different location. The new location assessed my mower and immediately noticed the problem. I wasted 3 weeks with my mower just sitting at this place and they did absolutely nothing to it, except for return it to me extremely dirty. The only good thing is that they refunded my "assessment fee" because they did not assess anything. I do not recommend Colonial Hardware to anyone. Take your mower somewhere that specializes in mower repair. read more

Repair Rip Off Scammers I should have stopped here first.. trust and believe that we are now faithful and true Yelpers. Late or not we learned our lesson. We are no longer regular customers. Like many others have said the option for repairs is a joke. If you are in need of a repair then get ready to shovel out money like you are making a brand new purchase of your product. Here is what happened to us. We were quoted a non-refundable $25.00 to review the item and the repair that was needed should not exceed more than $40.00. Their quote for cost matched the cost at other places when called around so we figured they would do the best job. We have made purchases several times big and small ticket items here before and have always been satisfied. We were confident that they would be able to fix it and we would not have any problems after the service was completed. Plus we were in the middle of deciding on where and what type of riding mower to purchase since we wanted a newer one with some bells and whistles. We took an edger in for a minor repair. We waited and waited for someone to call and advise us of the status of the repair after a week had passed and no one ever called. So we called to get an update and was told about several different things that were wrong and that they had already taken it apart. We were quoted the price of $200.00 for repairs. My first thought was are you kidding me. That was more than we paid to buy this thing new at the store. So we told them ok.. that's not feasible and requested they return our product to its original condition. We lost $25.00, our time, two trips worth of gas, normal range blood pressure due to rise in temperature and respect for our former favorite lawn store. Plus we had to still purchase a new trimmer. They then blamed the problem on user error, so that the warranty would not cover it. I took the mower elsewhere, where it was promptly repaired for the grand total of $25. Extremely Rude employees at the repair shop. Sloppy repair job on replacing carborator on my trimmer. Trimmer broke just outside 30 day warranty and they want me to pay another $120 for the problem they didn't fix the first time plus a $20 inspection fee even though it is without a doubt the same problem. Very condescending tone. Been here three times and someone has been rude every time. Go to Germantown hardware. They are so nice and fair. I dropped my toro walk behind mower off to get the clutch break assembly looked at and or repaired cause the blade has totally lost power. I asked to receive a courtesy call before any repairs were done just in case it was going to be cheaper to buy a new mower. I never received a call, luckily the repairs plus the 20 dollar inspection fee was only 118.00 bucks way less than a new mower of comparable features. Although the repairs were not much I still would have liked a call before any work being done. After I paid and picked up my mower I decided to make sure everything was in working order before loading it up and leaving. I'm so glad I did! I started the mower and engaged the blade and thick white smoke starred to come out from underneath the mower deck! I immediately turned it off and walk straight back in a told them what was wrong. You would think that they would have tested this before I picked it up. The bearing had gone bad and they fixed it on the spot without any additional charges. I'm very glad I tested the mower before leaving or else I would have been very upset to have to reload this thing and drive all the way back to the store. read more

Colonial Hardware, Inc. 6140 Macon Road, Memphis, TN 38134. Dropped off broken lawn mower on 05/30/2012. Paid $21.85 for inspection fee and left place of business with the perception that I would be given a call with diagnosis and recommendation for service. Sales associate on receipt: Graylin. Received a call at 8am on 06/01/2012 that lawn mower was repaired and ready for pick- up. Upon arrival I was met with a balance of $86.73. Explained to associates that I never received a call to go ahead with service and that I never would have agreed to pay $108.58 to service a ten year old mower. They explained that it is their policy to automatically repair the mower if the parts and labor do not exceed $100. The charge before tax was $99.34, which I find suspect. There was no mention of this policy, no sign and no form, literature or documentation to support this supposed policy. Had they called me, I would not have agreed to the fee, accepted the loss of $20 for the inspection and picked up my broken mower. Every member of the staff I spoke with handled this situation very unprofessionally, all the way up to the owner of the store. One woman kept saying that I was just trying to get something for free. I asked for all their names and they refused and one man left shouting expletives at me from the other side of the counter. I paid the balance and left very dissatisfied. read more

I have to agree with the other customers regarding the unfair practice of overcharging customers for repairs without notification - it also happened to me. Dropped off a small m,owner that i bought at the end of summer for a general tune up. The web price stated $37.50. I received a call after the work had been completed that the charge was $90. I asked why, and why wasn't I notified and given a chance to refuse service? I then spoke to the owner, Shirley Sheffield. She was totally unapologetic and said that her service repair staff only notified customers if repairs were over $125, because they were "too busy" to call if repairs were less than this! I made a complaint to the BBB, after which she has committed to revising her business advertising for this service. Customer beware! I won't go back. Even the semblance of a sincere apology from the owner might have helped - the "sincerity" was only evident in her response to the complaint that I filed with the BBB.
