Showed us where to pick out items, how to pick out colors, and informed us on when we could pick up our items when they were done. Amazing staff who were all willing to help. We asked for a lot of different colors and a few other tables were working at the same time as us but they always brought what we requested and with a smile on the faces. Stopped by with my 3 kids and 2 sisters for my daughter's birthday in a Friday night. I was worried it would be super busy, but to my surprise it was nice and quiet. The pottery selection is intense, there's so much to pick from you want to paint it all! Although we have been to other color me mine locations in the past, they still took the time to explain it to us, and give us handy tricks to make sure our ceramics came out the best they could. There was a gentleman there, I want to say is the manager/owner, but I'm not sure, he was amazing. He was helpful, he was engaging, and was beyond kind. There was also a nice young lady who was patient, and quick to bring us our paints whenever we needed them. Between 3 adults and 3 children it normally would have been hectic, but we had so much fun! We took our time, and enjoyed every bit of it. As the evening progressed, they started getting busier, but service was still top notch. I hate writing negative reviews, especially when I had such a good time with my little. But there are some issues here worth addressing, particularly in terms of quality control. I will say they had a good selection of pottery from which to choose, so that's a positive. My daughter and I painted four pieces. When we got them unwrapped at home after pickup (which, I will give them props for this - was the very next day) we discovered transfer on all of the pieces. On a solid yellow bird, there is black paint all over the bottom. (I painted the bottom so this was especially irritating.) On a solid green jar with a white cap, I got it back with deep scratches all over the green jar and random dark marks on the lid. My daughter's dolphin looked like it had an adult fingerprint in it, and her popcorn bowl had paint transfer from each side to the next. Every piece had flaws that weren't there when we left. I will post pics. Also - MANY of the brushes are not cleaned properly. Clean them yourself before using. Daughter used white paint first and got a black streak in her paint when she used one of the "clean" brushes. I also don't understand what the "sitting fee" covers outside of paint (it's never actually explained by anyone or written/posted where someone can see it) and I also don't understand why gratuity is expected on top of that. The girl that helped us was very nice, but they were busy and it took WAY too long to get paint when we needed it. Like 15-20 mins each time. Also, they didn't offer aprons, which if you have a child with you, should be a given. (She usually brings an art shirt, but this was an impromptu trip.) When we inquired after seeing people in them, they were "out." We saw people that came in after us get them, though. They were also out of paper towels (which made cleaning and testing the brushes difficult.) Fun afternoon spent with my daughter but I could think of better ways to spend $100+ when the quality control is this poor. We've sat and painted at numerous CMM locations (locally we are usually at the Naperville location); we wouldn't return to this one. read more

I took my stepdaughter here one Saturday morning over Thanksgiving week, and was impressed with the array of pieces the store offered. I never went into Color Me Mine when they were originally at the Commons (this is a new store, under new management), but what I saw in November was enough to make me come back! We were greeted warmly when we entered the store, and an employee directed us to pick out a piece and then sit at a table. We found two pieces - one for my stepdaughter, and one for dad (a Hanuakkah gift). A staff member quickly brought us four paint colors and we got to work. I appreciated that the staff checked back frequently to see if we needed more paint, and when I explained that dad's cup would be painted blue, one woman poured us an entire plateful of blue! Once we were finished, I paid for the pieces and was told they would be ready Monday, which was a bit of a bummer, as my stepdaughter was returning to other home on Sunday. I explained this, and the staff member said she would put it into the kiln earlier, and it might be ready for pick-up as early as Saturday, in which case they would call. I was pretty excited about that possibility, but no one actually phoned as promised, which is the only reason this shop does not receive a higher score. Still, when I did go to pick up the pieces the following week, they looked lovely. I would absolutely return to Color Me Mine in the near future! read more

I don't like writing negative reviews especially since I had a fun afternoon painting with my kids but this place is extremely overpriced. Positive: The studio is super cute and clean. There is a lot to choose from but the studio is pretty small and it was hard to quickly find something within a reasonable price range. There is a base fee of $8 per person in addition to the individually priced ceramic pieces. The cheapest ceramics I could find quickly that my kiddos liked were $24 each - yikes. Just for two kids to spend an hour painting it cost over $70 bucks. This place is expensive. You also have to come back and get your finished product within a week... so for someone that doesn't live near by it's even more frustrating since it cost so much in the first place. read more

My family and I went here during spring break week and the place was really busy. Many of the tables were full of people needing instructions, more paint, more brushes, advice, etc. but even though they were hopping, all of the staff were super friendly and patient and helpful. They were also very intentional about making sure we knew about the various fees in advance of incurring them. We've been to a couple paint-your-own-pottery places and this is by far the nicest. cleanest, and most organized. This is definitely a fun activity and a great way to spend time with friends (or your kids!) and just chat. That said... -2 stars because I think it is expensive. Adult and child studio fee is $16. Plus the pieces you are going to paint....yeah, it can get costly. read more

I wanted to do a cute date so brought my fiance here. We didn't know what piece(s) to pick so we browsed their wide selection for quite some time. They had a whole wall of items to choose from, whether it be for cooking, eat-ware, decorations, etc. So, that obviously was good/bad thing. Too many decisions! haha. Well, as we looked around we noticed that some of pottery were kinda expensive! The person working there over heard our discussion and suggested to come in one of their "themed" nights to get a good discount. She wasn't at all pushy and actually told us we could save about $12 if we waited. How nice! :) Although we didn't paint that night, at least we got a good idea what we wanted to paint and what night to go on. We're excited to go back for sure! read more

I had my daughters 4th birthday party here on a Sunday 1:30-3:30. We had a total of 6 kids (ages 18mos- 6 yo), 4 adults painting. When we got there, I asked if we HAD to leave at 3:30. I was told no as there were no other parties for the day. Having been told that, I did not rush the kids along. At the beginning of the party, they were very accommodating. They then began getting frustrated when anyone would ask for paint. At 3:25 I was told it was almost 3:30 and that we needed to start wrapping up. I was also handed a garbage bag. The adults quickly finished their pieces. I started cleaning off the table with the cake and snacks. I paid and we went outside. As we were outside talking, I saw them put the chairs on top of the table and begin cleaning. When I went to pick up the finished pieces I spoke with the manager. I told her I felt we were rushed out and that some employees were annoyed when we asked for more paint. I was told that parties are specifically booked for 2 hours. I asked if that's the rule for anyone who comes into the studio. I was told no, just the parties because then they would have another large group coming in. When I brought up the point of there not being any more parties, she didn't have another answer. I was also told that during a party the only job of the employees is to get paint, not stay with us. One of the employees who was there on Sunday told us that it was busy during our party and that the chairs were up because they needed to clean. I also told her that because of the service, I wouldn't be back. There was another mom with me who has 2 small kids who also won't be booking any parties there nor bringing her family there. The manager shook her head and told me she was sorry I had a poor experience. I paid close to $500 for a party for my daughter at a place that I didn't feel like we were wanted. The manager also made it clear she didn't care much for my opinions. read more

I go back and forth between giving 2 or 3 stars. The manager is probably one of the most rudest manager I've encountered in a long time. When we got there was someone sitting outside at a table complaining on the phone. I didn't even know he was the manager/owner but I thought to myself, someone should ask him to move his loud and condescending conversation to where people don't have to listen to him when they walk in. We sit down, start painting and in walks the manager/owner with his chest puffed out and starts in with the employees. That's when I figured out who he was. My mouth dropped open when I heard how he talked to his employees. I would never allow my teens to work for this man. I was in the store with my 2 girls and there were two other tables with 2 people each. Never once did the manager/owner acknowledge us or anyone else. Evidently he was too busy thinking of things to criticize his employees for. After about 30 minutes someone from the mall came in and talked to him a out parking. Soon after the manager/owner stormed out saying he was going to talk to people. When we checked out I asked the employees if he is always like that. I give them credit, they kept it professional and said, it's ok, they don't let it upset them. As far as the painting it was fun but expensive. Lots of neat pieces to pick from and lots of fun paint colors. Employees were very helpful and sweet. We probably would not return though. I would rather find a place to paint where the manager/owner didn't make me uncomfortable with his attitude. read more

Upon seeing the prices, we walked out. $6 painting fee for each child, $10 for adults. Plus pottery started at $20 for each piece. Nicer platters were $50. Plus at least 12% gratuity? I am not sure why this is expected at a "You Paint it Yourself" pottery place??? Nobody helped us as we were looking at the pottery. So for a mom and two kids we are talking around $100? Seriously? The store is relatively small but we got there shortly after they opened and there were not a lot of people in the store yet. The staff was really friendly and very helpful. I've been to the Color Me Mine in Crystal Lake 3 times. I've loved it every time, and so I was excited when they opened up one closer to me. They get five stars. Unfortunately, I did not have the same experience here. Most of my complaints are centered around the lady working at the time, Erin. First, I came and and two other groups were finishing up. I waited to be greeted, but wasn't greeted. I knew what was happening, so we went over to browse the options. Finally, a worker greeted us. She said to select our pieces and sit down. We got our pieces and chose a table. So far, not bad. The lady came over and vaguely described what to do with choosing the paint colors. At the other location, they gave us a complete tour of everything they offered and we got to pick our own paint colors. I didn't mind that they chose them for us, but I did prefer to get my own supplies. I wish the lady would have just said that she would be with us in a few minutes. She got us our paint and then handed us some brushes. She didn't offer us pencils, sponges, or show us all of the options they have. She also didn't give us the brush I needed, so I asked for it. Then she said we could get our own brushes. I wish she would have just showed us everything that we were allowed to access so we could choose what we wanted. She then said she would leave us alone and to ask if we needed anything. That would have been fine, but she wasn't really around to ask. But these things are annoying, not really bad. This is where it gets bad. We got started painting and there was nobody else in the shop except two employees. The lady who had been helping us, Erin, began complaining to the other employee about her morning. It was too busy and customers were upset about about their pieces not being done for pick up. She then complained about one customer who was very upset about a birdhouse and evidentially wanted the shop to deliver it to her in sycamore. Erin talked about how unreasonable that was. The other employee agreed, but Erin was fueling this unprofessional conversation. They were right in the same room as us and weren't even trying to hide it. Then, Erin goes into the back room to make a phone call. Evidentially she was calling her boss. I could still hear every word that she said. She talked about how she "wasn't freaking out." And went on and on about her day and how busy she was, explaining what happened and was apologizing to her boss. I did not need to hear all of that and again it was very unprofessional. The other employee was out on the floor and was very pleasant. She actually noticed us, asked if we needed anything, complimented our pieces, and noticed when we were running low on paint. But the entire hour we spent painting was spent overhearing loud, unprofessional conversations that I really didn't care about. I just wanted to paint in peace. read more

Love the selection! Painted here with a group of friends. We had a blast. The only down side was you couldn't bring in wine but there were a lot of restaurants near by so we had appetizers and drinks at Bar Louie and then painted. Can't wait to do it again. Also the employees were great they printed images out from the computer for us and taught us how to use transfer paper. read more

We had a fun afternoon here last week! The weather was so hot and we needed something to do the week before school started so we came to try out some pottery painting. We were just complaining about not having larger bowls for ice cream, so we picked out 4 good size bowls and waited for instructions. The employees were very patient with us (we never tried this before) and made sure we understood everything from colors to how many coats. Our bowls came out beautifully! We used them tonight for the first time and it was cute to see everyone proudly enjoying their bowl of ice cream! read more

This place is god awful. I am never coming back here with my kids. The manager is awful and shouldn't be able to work there. Katie has no respect and talks negative about all her co-workers. I was sitting down quietly with my kids and I hear her running her mouth about workers and how awful they are and how awful her day is. This is very unprofessional. The pricing here is outrageous. $6 for children and $10 for adult plus the prices of the pieces which start at $20 that's outrageous. I will not be coming back here. Everything is just run unorganized. Don't go here! read more

I have been taking my grandchildren to Color Me Mine for several years. There is always a great selection of pottery - and nothing is more special than gifts or works of art painted by little hands. However, the best part of Color Me Mine in Geneva is the management team at the store. They are extremely customer service oriented, very helpful, provide ideas, and have helped me create intricate and unique projects. Just recently, my son and daughter-in-law expanded their family with twins - all children under four. Jason, the manager, showed me a large tray-like piece that could be used to capture the two hand prints of the toddlers - plus the feet of the two infants (he suggested feet for the infants). Since the colder weather had started, I brought in the 3 year old and 1 year old for their hand prints and Jason said I could take home paint to do the 2-month old twins feet at home. Jason's mom helped me create a sponged border that really made the plate POP. I love that the management team cares so much about their customers and is so very helpful with ideas, Another great idea from Jason was to create a Christmas ornament from an oval piece of pottery - on one side we put the twin's infant foot print (at home) - and the other side - their name and all the details of their birth, A red ribbon to hang - what a great ornament and keepsake - so unique. One time my 7 year old twin granddaughters painted a plate and when I picked it up I just mentioned that I wished the words were a darker color as it was hard to read. Jason immediately suggested that he could darken the letters and re-fire the piece, and he would call when ready. It came out perfect. Jason and his team are extremely helpful, friendly, knowledgeable, and try to make it a fun experience for the kids. There are other painting techniques that he has shown us and we continue to learn. The store is well stocked with seasonal pieces in addition to the large selection of pottery pieces. The tables are setup with all supplies needed. While I used to get aprons for the kids - I find that the kids rarely get any paint on their clothes and if a little bit does, it easily comes out in the wash machine. There are also adult classes and various techniques I have watched while helping my grandchildren. Hoping someday to attend one of those classes. I highly recommend this store and the helpful management team - and will return again and again. read more

My boyfriend and I went here for the first time in years and service was outstanding Much better then I remember. The manager, Erin I believe her name was, was extremely accommodating to our needs. My boyfriend being a first timer and me being so forgetful she was always ready and willing to help us with our color choices and even some instructional help with the design I was trying to recreate. We were the last ones painting and it was almost closing but they didn't rush us nor did we feel any pressure to hurry. Definitely my favorite place to paint! read more

Had my daughters birthday party there. Not very good service. I booked the party a month in advance. They never called the day before to confirm, I had to call them to make sure they had us down. Upon getting there we were not greeted or told how everything works. I had to ask one of the girls what's going on since nobody talked to me for the 15 minutes I was there. We had to ask the, for every little thing, they didn't have a good sense of cleaning up or sense of how a birthday party flows. They also have no candles, napkins, paper plates, knives, so don't forget anything! Better yet, don't choose that location for birthday parties, They didn't even clean their bathrooms, it was a mess! read more

Went there in June with my granddaughter. The place was full, we got the last empty table. Thought the prices were high, but it was a special day for us to be together, and she (age 5) really wanted to paint. So unimpressed with the teenage helpers who work there, and I'm sure get paid. It took forever to get more paint for our project. The noise level is very high, the high tables are uncomfortable to paint at, you have to return in a week to pick up your project. Very underwhelmed. It's pricey, and from my perspective if I'm paying a $10 "painting fee" I should experience phenomenal customer service. SO not the case. I think it's due to the absurd number of high school girls working there. They were not helpful or very attentive and the sheer number of them contributed to the overwhelming claustrophobic crowdedness of the place. Add to it having to wait a week to pick up, then even after a week all our pieces weren't ready. The lackluster customer service continued with very uninterested bored approach to helping me. We went here this weekend for a family birthday party. If was a lot of fun. Lots of options of what to paint and lots of inspirational ideas. We painted a lot, made a big mess and the helpful staff took care of it. When some family members were struggling, staff offered to stop in to help make adjustments to the pieces. The only reasons for 4 instead of 5 stars is we didn't realize that we have to return later to pick up after fired in the kiln. This location is quite a drive for us and with the holidays coming up it may not be until late December before we can go back. I wish there would have been an option to pay to ship to my house once completed. read more
