We had a large group with an age range from 5 to 80 and we all had a blast! I was nervous how my 5 year old would do but she ended up in the front of the raft and even hoped in the river in a mellow section. It was just the right amount of adventure for us city folks lol There is a pretty wild section of the river where the kids and my 80 year old dad got out of the raft and met us down the river. I appreciate how organized this part was. We felt safe with the lifejackets and helmets provided and our captain leading the way. An experience we'll all remember for sure and at great price. Bonus: when we got back, the kids panned to rocks and "gold". It was an extra cost but again, reasonably priced. read more

I would give Colorado outback adventures a 5 star. I was scared but my guide Charlie helped me get rid of my butterfly's. We went down a big rapid and I had the best time of my life. All of my family and me loved it. So if you are looking for something fun to do go Colorado Outback Adventures was so fun. I can tell you will have fun on it. The waves were high and mighty... or something like that. This was my first time white water rafting and a time that I hadn't been to Durango in several years and wanted to try something new (and in honor of my dance teacher who recently died in a white water rafting accident). I got a 10% discount for booking in person off their Main Street location. They answered any question I had there (and yes, there are several EMT's on staff). I was slightly nervous by the time we got to the river, but those fears were quickly allayed. Along with the 16 others as part of a family reunion our guide, Charlie, was knowledgeable of facts about the river and seemed good at what he does. There were times where the waves were two or three times the height of our raft, and others where it was a gentle stroll on the river with no paddling necessary. Yes, you will get wet (but luckily I had brought frog toggs with me- an Alaska rainsuit set. A perfect alternative to a wetsuit, otherwise an extra $10-15 for rental). By the end, I was disappointed that it was already over, even after spending 1 hour 40 minutes + on the river. Something for the bucket list for sure read more

All the rafting companies around Durango do the same route down the Animas river unless you're doing a long trip in the upper Animas including camping. COA does a terrific job on their rafting route through Durango, but it's also the most reasonably priced. Our guide was Casey, who was absolutely fabulous. He was incredibly fun for both the adults and kids - and really made an effort to share local information as well as make make the ride as adventurous as possible. THANKS COA! read more

We had a great ride down the river today with this group. Easy parking downtown, they've got booties to rent cheap if you need them, a bus pickup and drop off, etc. Friendly people, safety minded. We had four young kids in the raft and they all had a great time (even getting some cold river water in the face). Our guide was great. Water was low but he made our trip exciting enough. We had 3 kids with us that were rafting for the first time. They've been canoeing but this is just a tad different so it was great for them. The kids got out at the "lake" and experienced the freezing cold water. We also rode the rapid 2x which everyone LOVED. If you're a group of adults that have been rafting or thrill seekers, this ride is not it for ya when the river is low. They do drag out rides to meet time requirements when necessary so that's disappointing. read more

We did the 4hr UTV rental in their Kawasaki KRX 1000 and had a blast!!! We saw waterfalls, deer and it was definitely an exciting new way to experience Colorado and it's beauty! Everyone in the office were awesome, social and very welcoming. They provide a recommended route to take which included great scenic views and 4hrs was plenty of time to complete the trails! If I could change 1 thing it would be renting the goggles. It gets dusty out there and it's no fun getting dirt in your eyes. read more

2.5 hour rafting. Booking was easy. Price is good. It says to show up 30 minutes before but that was unnecessary. We just ended up waiting 30 minutes before anything happened. 10 minutes before should do it. Front office reception was a little unfriendly but not necessarily rude. The river was low but overall good experience. It's very low key and family friendly. I'm not a thrill seeker but could have used more rapids but not sure if that was because the river was low. Guides were all great. I would recommend for anyone who wants to experience white water rafting but might be worried it's too dangerous. Totally safe for all. read more

6 of our family members floated with COA yesterday. Two senior adults, one adult and 3 children aged 11,8,and 6. We all had a blast! The river was fairly low and we were lodged on rocks a few times but our fantastic river guide, Cal, worked hard and got us moving again every time. Cal was very knowledgeable of the area and shared interesting historical facts along the way, as well as important safety tips before and during our trip. He also gave each of our grandkids an opportunity to sit in his seat and row his massive paddles. They were all ready to get back in his own seat after trying. Disappointing experience with several staff members and the owner. They initially lacked courteous problem solving skills and then went even further to be contentious and offensive. This is for the ATV rental. The tours are by the hour. It takes a half an hour + to get to any sort of adventurous road so an hour of time is spent on roads a Smart Car could easily navigate. Perhaps bc it was summer and no snow or rain, but we were sad most of our time was spent sucking dust from cars in front of us vs having an adventure. I'm not sure if the company is able but I expected pre-planed rock/dirt hills and excitement. This is ok but not worth a two hour rental. Apparently you need to rent a longer ride to see excitement. read more

We had the best time, THE BEST! And Levi our guide was excellent, we felt safe and secure. He also knew a lot of Colorado's history and landmarks along the lower Animas River. The rafts were nicer than other competitors which look older and dirtier...the 2 hour trip was just enough for us, and at the end we had some exciting fun rapids to wrap up the trip. We took our almost 8 yo twins and the entire family on the guided rafting tour last week and had an absolute blast! Tess was our guide and we literally laughed our proverbial asses off the entire trip. The following day we rented ATVs for the 4 hour haul up Purgatory and it was gorgeous. We booked a 4 hour tour for the afternoon, the machines weren't available (something broke) and we agreed to wait 2 hours and just take a pro rated 2 hour tour when the rzrs were available. While we were rebooking we let Bob know we would be at the bar/restaurant right next door, Bob made it clear that we had any drinks we would not be allowed to drive the rzrs, we passed this info along to the 3 other people who were to be driving. Now this is where Bob showed his lack of professionalism, Bob walked to the patio area of the restaurant where we were seated and made a scene letting us know that we would not be able to take his machines because we were drinking. Out of a group of 8 adults, 3 had been drinking, and they were NOT the drivers and we had 2 adults under the age of 21, and a 17 year old, out of a group of 11 people 3 were drinking. His scene was so pathetic that Iggy, our server, offered to tell them more than half of us had not ordered a single drink and that we were in fact we not violating any safety rules. When we told Bob, that number one his approach was completely unnecessary, and number two we wanted our money back he said he felt "threatened" and literally called the police and said, "They're not being very friendly". The fact that a business owner cannot manage his own business and has to call the police waste the polices VALUABLE time when customers are requesting a refund is honestly laughable. I guess you can say Bob was a real Karen. Police did show up and were super friendly and apologized profusely for Bobs actions. Iggy from Paradise Pizzeria was super nice and apologized that Bob had the audacity to pull his little stunt, Bobs actions were so embarrassing to the locals that the Pizzeria where we were seated went as far as letting us know management would be made aware of the type of person Bob was, and even gave us some free pizzas even when they did nothing wrong. Save your money don't come here, Bob is a spineless business owner and the ONLY negative experience we had during our stay in Purgatory. I'll be posting the review everywhere to let as many people know they type of business this is. read more

We rented a 2-seat Razor today from COA and had the BEST time. Mr Foster (my apologies as I can not recall his first name), did a fabulous job of instructing us on the safety rules and answered my many questions about what to expect as neither my husband nor I had driven a Razor before. It took no time at all to start enjoying the ride. We were given a map and verbal directions that made following the trail easy. It was amazing being that close to nature and it's beauty!!!! And all the while feeling the excitement of traveling a less followed path. We even saw a gorgeous bear and a deer!!! I'd advise anyone to go through COA. Their equipment is top notch and well maintained. The gentlemen know the mountain and the machines well. The cost of the rental is worth every penny in fun!!!! My wife and I rented a four seat RZR on July 12. Neither of us had any UTV experience. The staff was very friendly and professional and gave us a thorough safety orientation and planned a route for beginners. It was great! Wonderful scenery, and the ponchos they supplied were needed because it did rain for a short while. Next time we're in Purgatory we will be renting again. read more
