There's a review about this business stating that they felt unwelcome/dismissed purely because she was younger. I'm happy to report that I don't think that's the case, the staff here are just not that jolly customer service type of people regardless of age. I'm a younger woman who loves a small local business. I was on a pursuit to purchase 3-4 skeins of 100% cashmere yarn for a small project on a Wednesday afternoon. The selection they have is lovely and semi-organized in a way that makes sense. The cube shelves in the middle could have more labels. I mean, they have some seriously nice fibers- they had a few 100% cashmere yarns priced at $35/100g (which isn't up charged by much and something I'd be happy to pay to support local shops) and a wide array of mohair. I guess my issue is that they didn't carry anything beyond the luxury, $20+/skeins that's in my tax bracket. Very limited selection of malabrigo and non- superwash cascade. They also had a very limited selection of notions and needles were being held behind the counter. I asked for a pair of steel 5mm needles, either double points or fixed, and they only had wood or bamboo which was disappointing. As for customer service, the woman who helped me look for the needles was very sweet. There was another customer in the store at the time and had the other employee tied up. This customer was a crocheter who came in with no particular pattern or idea in mind other than to make something for her granddaughter. She wanted to make either a blanket or a garment using only cotton fibers because she said wool is too itchy. Granted, I think this customer was really not giving the employee anything to work with (at one point she asked what her granddaughter's complexion was and the customer replied with "brown hair"), but I can tell that the employee was quickly getting more irritated by the minute. I ultimately left with nothing.. I do want to see this business succeed though as I think a fiber arts store in CW makes sense. read more

Love this shop!! I used to go to the shop in Lenox, Massachusetts and was so excited to visit the shop in Williamsburg, Virginia. The space is smaller but as charming as ever. There is a huge selection of wonderful yarns you can't find anyplace else. It's so important to be able to touch the yarn and see the color. Bonnie, the owner, is wonderful. I was picking out two yarns to make a project and she spent time with me and taught me a bit about color theory. I selected two yarns that I can't wait to get my hands into!! It's not cheap yarn, but it is heavenly to touch it all. Highly recommend. read more

Buyer Beware let me begin by saying I am a very experienced knitter of over 50 years...I generallywrite my own patterns, etc. I purchased 3 hanks of yarn ($107.85) to knit a shawl that was sampled in the store but the yarn that was sampled was not available. The salesperson recommended a substitute yarn. I was concerned that the yarn was too thin for the pattern (which I also bought) She assured me it would be fine. The pattern calls for #6 needle....the yarn band on the purchased yarn calls for #2 needle. I knit 2 inches on a #6 needle and knew it wasn't correct. I tried a #5, a #3 and a #2 needle. all 3 sizes looked awful. I went back to the store and wanted a refund because the yarn sold was incorrect for the pattern, which they refused. They told me, this will work and they DO NOT give refunds or credits. I tried several different attempts, including doubling the yarn. now I can take this yarn and throw it out. I wish I'd discovered Colorful Stitches years ago. Their selection is gorgeous and plentiful, with a range of prices. I visited just as the pandemic lockdown restrictions were being relaxed, and the store reopened with excellent precautions, including supplying customers with gloves so we could safely feel the yarns before buying. Roxanne was great - she even helped me figure out what I was doing wrong with my scarf pattern... all the while maintaining physical distance. This is exactly the kind of wonderful shop we're losing to the big box stores. Live long and prosper! I'll be back. read more

As a feminist, I know I'm not supposed to cop to having seen/enjoyed "Pretty Woman," but to paraphrase Romy and Michelle, it is SO SAD when they won't let her shop. And nothing reminds me of that famous scene so much as my several attempts to shop at Colorful Stitches. Somehow the staff at Colorful Stitches missed the memo that young women are taking back traditional crafts, and since they also have fancy-pants jobs, they also are likely as not to have discretionary cash to spend on $25 skeins of yarn. Although they're always advertising in the increasingly fashion-forward "Interweave Knits," every trip I've made to the store, with platinum card in hand, has been met with disinterest from the staff, if not hostility. Even simple questions ("Do you stock Addi Turbos, and if so, where are they located?") are met with one word answers and eyerolls. Oh, except for the time I brought my visiting mom with me -- great service then, of course, though it was targeted towards her. The store is beautifully laid out, has a strong selection from most of the major upscale lines of yarn and has ample parking, but it's all for naught if you're a woman under 40, I'm afraid. If you're in the Berkshires for a weekend and want to get your knit on, there's much better options --take a drive out to the justifiably famous WEBS warehouse store, where even significant others can be entertained, in Northampton; travel south to Wonderful Things in Great Barrington (where the store is laid out in a frustrating way, and the service can be a bit prickly, but the know-how of the staff is tremendous); or go off the beaten path to Countrywool in Hudson, NY, where the selections tend towards the hardcore European lines and spinning materials -- and it's a haven for Elizabeth Zimmerman aficionados! read more

Okay, so my grandmother taught me to knit when I was about 10. I knitted a scarf that turned out to only be a potholder, and that was it for my glorious knitting career -- until now. We were on vacation in Lenox, and I was browsing the shops, which weren't as plentiful as I had hoped. In desperation, I entered Colorful Stitches, thinking that they might sell some pre-made items (they sell a few, but they're pricey. Apt for hand-made products). The sheer variety and beauty of their yarns impressed me and caught my imagination. I live in Southern California, so the last thing I need is a wool scarf. Nonetheless, I decided to give knitting another try. I approached the register, where the clerk was working online. I explained that I was a rank beginner, but that I was interested in buying a "how-to" book and some yarn. Rather than push an expensive book on me, she told me that my best bet was to look online, where there are abundant -- and free-- sites on how to knit. She then spent the next 15 minutes or so giving me some tips, showing me different types of yarns and which ones were good for beginners, and helping me pick out knitting needles. If this planned scarf becomes another potholder, it won't be the fault of the helpful staff at Colorful Stitches! They also have a website, so if the knitting takes, I can order more of their beautiful yarn! read more

Ok my husband doesn't like me visiting this store because it has too much beautiful yarn, patterns and samples and I always buy something! Great space, great light, a great selection of yarn and more patterns than I could ever hope to knit. The store has several man chairs, always a must since it takes me time to make my selections. I don't tend to sit and knit here. You could buy it doesn't have a space that I settle into. That said I still live the store and the employees are knowledgeable and helpful. read more

I visited around the same time as Sarah O., and I too am young, but didn't have a similar experience. The store was very busy when I was there, though, and I didn't have any questions before buying. Mostly I walked around marveling at the lovely yarns I had never seen before. I love how sunny and open this store feels. There is one woman in particular who is very hostile and rude. Shouldn't have purchased anything with the way she treated my friend and I. Funny seeing as the knitting/ yarn industry is such a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Great shoppe to browse in for those cute toilet roll covers and knitted antimacassars!! The staff just loooooove it when little kids come in and try to touch all the knitted picnic "food" that's temptingly displayed in the window. In truth, this bunch of sourpusses makes the owners of Portlandia's fictional bookstore, "Women and Women First," look laid back and accepting. The saleswomen were downright mean to the little kids in the store and rude to everyone else in sight. Get a grip, girls! It's only yarn! Advice: Avoid the Knitting Nazis in this store and take up pottery instead. read more

I had a terrible experience here. I went in with about $350 worth of supplies to purchase and was treated so rudely that I bought only a few notions just because I was desperate. I would never go back here. I was actually yelled at for asking for help with a pattern! The staff were even yelling at each other. I've never seen anything quite like this and I sorely hope they go out of business as their respect for or even interest in customers appears to be entirely lacking. read more

For my birthday this year, I received a hat making kit and needles from Colorful Stitches a yarn store that I expected to be very zen and friendly. I didn't like the hat kit particularly, so I went to the store to return/exchange it for something else. When we walked in the door, my mom told the "oh so friendly" shopkeepers that I wanted to get something else since they apparently do not allow returns of any kind. The woman (shopkeeper #1) at the cash register said abruptly in response, "Is this the birthday girl in question?" (Needless to say, I didn't hear happy birthday once during this whole terrible visit.) Another shopkeeper (#2) decided that she would help me pick something out. I was not interested in anything in the store and felt like I would be wasting the nice yarn. My mom then picked a pre-made hat out of the window that she would buy and wear and asked how much it would cost since we had to use up the amount that the kit and needles costed. Well, that through shopkeepers #1 and 2 over the edge. Shopkeeper #1 yelled, "THIS IS NOT A CLOTHING STORE!!! Nothing that is made is for sale! It's to inspire you." So I was forced to pick something and I got two skeins of yarn. When we went to check out, there was a one dollar difference in the price of the yarn and the original hat kit. (This difference was 1 dollar less than the cost of the hat kit, so we thought it was close enough.) Shopkeepers #1 and #2 decided that we needed to open a credit account to put the one dollar on or buy something that put us over the original cost, therefore making us spend more money. We said that we didn't live in the area and planned not to return (ever) again. They would not let us leave without doing something with the one dollar, so shopkeeper #2 proudly/snappishly said, "Well, I was helpful, put it on my account." So we left and will never return to Colorful Witches ever again . . . read more

Service is hit or miss. But most yarn stores are like that. Otherwise, great selection of yarn and the layout of the store is really nice. Just wish they had more classes and/or a social knitting group that met there or something. read more

An absolutely beautiful yarn store. Fantastic space with a lot natural light (something that is such a plus in a yarn store to be able to see color). Fantastic collection of yarns. I had a great experience here with the staff and though I have read some of the other reviews on the staff being not very friendly - I did not find this to be true at all. They were very friendly, answering all of my questions when I had them and left me alone when I wanted to look by myself and just explore the yarns. I would definitely recommend this yarn store and plan to go back myself if I'm in the area. I do think the yarn store is a bit pricey but they have a fantastic selection and I didn't find them to be that much more expensive than any of the other yarn stores I've been to. read more

It's a lovely store with excellent choices. I was visiting from out of town and asked if they sold any local yarn or anything special. "No" was the answer. Nothing more was said to me. Curt. We ended up driving to the yarn shop on Water Street in Williamstown. The owner has an alpaca farm and sells her own yarn and much more. Delightful owner and I got lots of beautiful yarn. read more

I guess I should be flattered that the sales associate at Colorful Stitches thought I was under 40! I too, was treated with disrespect and disdain. They didn't have the pattern I was looking for in stock and when I asked if it was available on line I was told it was not. I was also informed (though I didn't ask) that they yarn was not available on line - only retail. This, of course, was a bold faced lie. Both the yarn and the pattern are available (for less money) on line. I prefer shopping locally and keeping small businesses running - but when people lie to my face - it makes it difficult to ever want to go in and spend any money in their shop. As an aside - I was purchasing the pattern to knit for a friend who was with me. She informed the associate that she was allergic to wool and asked where other yarn was. The same associate not 30 seconds later, when showing me the yarn for the pattern in question, led me to wool for my friend. The associate had been involved in the conversation about my knitting the pattern for my friend so it's not as if she hadn't 'heard' it. If you are going to run a shop - you might want to think a bit more about the people who are shopping in it! read more

Agree strongly with Sarah O. I was brushed off with every question I asked and treated as if all my questions were ridiculous. Do not expect respect or help. I walked out buying nothing when I intended to spend about $150 on yarn for a project, simply because I found the service so condescending and rude. Will not return. read more
