It became clear he was more focused on his vision than respecting the client's preferences. I had to directly tell him to stop disregarding our input before he backed off. He required a $1,000 down payment to "hold our place," creating FOMO or unnecessary pressure to commit. We specifically asked for time to confirm HOA approval before moving forward or cashing that check,, yet he cashed the check immediately anyway. There were even arguments about our particular HOA rules that he was trying to sway in his favor that when I went back and read them realized immediately I was being manipulated. He also made multiple unsolicited and critical remarks about items our home, which came across as unprofessional, disrespectful & personally insulting.. In the end, we chose not to proceed and had to follow up for three weeks before getting our money refunded. Based on this experience, I would not recommend his services. read more

If you hire Columbia Water Gardens, BE CAREFUL of Carl, the owner is a cheater and a crook. I hired him to build a pond for my turtles which cost close to 10k. It was beautiful. It not only gave my turtles a home but the pond was a method to deal with my PTSD. It calmed me. The problems with the pond came about 2 years ago when my neighbors behind me initially thought it was leaking. It was not leaking but code enforcement educated me that the pond was built too close to the fenceline. It was built 3 1/2ft vice the 5ft it should have been. Carl instead dodged that detail. I have records, texts, emails to confirm the following: Spoke to Carl in early 2025 when code enforcement sent me a letter. At first he was very attentive. Very short lived. He came to my home twice, maybe. Once in 2025 to check for the leak, and the second in 2026 after threatening legal action to correct his mistake.. He finally came to my home in 2026 AFTER I threatened legal action and complaint to CA. When the crew showed up for work, they were told by Carl it was a HOA complaint. Sorry Carl, you were caught cheating me of money and gave me an overpriced product. He appeared eager to fix his mistakes and promised he would return in July 2025. One year later. When the cide enforcement graciously extended the time for repairs. Filling the pond to avoid city violation was a last resort. Once work finally began. Carl made promises to stop and check the work. Cancelled each time. He had a habit of blaming his crew and his family, deflecting from accountability. Adding insult to injury he preached the bible to mansplain. He used his son to gain sympathy to divert accountability. I am a 100% disabled veteran with PTSD and I smelled the dookie. Carl had his crew no show once, and cancelled 22min before showtime, once. I found the pond was not built as the plans stated when it was drained and dismantled. I was charged as if it was. When the pond was being built to the signed AND paid contract specks. Carl yelled at his crew. Almost all communication with Carl was by text and email. I'm glad I did because he eventually ghosted me and it was his foreman Octavio who fought Carl's battles. We negotiated and agreed to a breach of contract settlement. When I called him to talk about what he sent me he said "abadah abadah" it was AI. He said he used AI. He then "abadhad" he was upside down and told me a current client in Fallbrook was giving him a headache. Mind you, this man drove to my home in a 80K+ truck and something was killed to be his boots. Sir, please don't tell me you're barely making ends meet. You have just returned from your 3rd vacation this year. I am a single mom, a disabled veteran, and I guarantee he is cheating other people, other veterans, and using his son to gain sympathy to escape culpability. He gave me a deadline pushing to pay me the same day he sent the agreement by email. I rewrote it and returned it to him. It was still a mutual agreement with zero need for lawyers. Maybe I was wrong? Guess what, he "abadad" again and said his counselors are reviewing it and he's waiting for their call. He will call tomorrow. He ghosted me but I know he read the texts. THE TRUE REVIEW: The foreman, Mr. Octavio and his crew worked very hard, with integrity, and never hesitated to answer any questions I had. In fact Octavio gave me a friendly push for questions. He is a genuine and VERY capable foreman, and the main liaison to explain major details, maintenance, and most likely puts out fires Carl starts. I would not be surprised if Carl is still open because of Octavio, and his crew. If you hire the company you will see the difference between fake Carl and Octavio, a decent human being with moral integrity and an excellent work ethic. Unfortunately, one of my turtles, Michelangelo, passed away from natural causes. He swam in his beautiful new home one last time. I admit I cried like a baby. I recently contacted Columbia Water Gardens to inquire about some minor maintenance work on my existing pond that has no fish or plants and I don't want any in the pond. However, my experience with them/John left me deeply disappointed and frustrated. Firstly, they charged a hefty $150.00 just to provide a quote. This seemed exorbitant for a simple assessment of the work required. Despite this, I proceeded with the hope that their service would justify the cost. To my dismay, the quote I received was astronomical. They proposed a labor cost of $2,500.00 per day for two workers this is JUST for labor for 2 men holy cow! This price far exceeded any reasonable estimate for the minor work I needed on an already existing small pond. It felt like they/John were trying to take advantage of me, especially considering that my pond already existed and required only minimal attention. Not only was the quote grossly inflated, but there was no effort made to explain or justify the exorbitant costs for just labor If they had been upfront before they came to give me a quote about their "labor cost of $2,500.00 a day" I would have never requested a quote from them, and it seemed they were solely focused on maximizing their profit without considering the needs or concerns of the customer. Overall, I would strongly advise against engaging with Columbia Water for any pond-related services. Their pricing practices are unreasonable, and their lack of transparency and customer consideration is deeply concerning who would pay $2,500.00 a day for labor for anything? What a gig how many quotes did John give that day must be a nice living. There are undoubtedly better and more reputable options available for pond maintenance. Consultation and Quote: I contacted CWG for a quote to install a pond and wetland filter in my backyard. I originally planned on doing this project DIY as I suspected it would be well outside my budget to have a professional do it, but after a thorough consultation with the owner Carl, I was presently surprised. I already had a general idea of the layout and design I wanted including a couple rough sketches; he listened, gave some input, and eventually we came up with an overall design idea that worked with the landscape area we were converting. He quoted me a fair rate, walked me through all the steps of the entire construction process, what all it would entail, and what to expect. He laid out all the features that would be included in the package we agreed on, I paid a deposit, and we set a start date for construction. Construction Process: Carl's crew began delivery his machinery and equipment, boulders, and the pond kit the week before they broke ground. The next week they got started, and before I knew it, it looked like a bomb went off in my backyard- which I expected, because Carl had warned me about it. His crew were all very polite and respectful, and took good care of my property while they were here. Change Order and Add-Ons: As the project began to come together, I was impressed, and approached Carl about adding a pondless waterfall in my front yard. The process was pleasant, he gave me another very fair quote, and after agreeing he had half his team started on the front yard, transforming that area as well. You could tell they all had a passion for the work they were doing, the results speak for themselves. I ended up approaching Carl with a couple more add-ons/change orders, including concrete curbs, decomposed granite pathways, mulch and plantings throughout the property. Again, this process was a breeze, and they were at it. Finished Product: All said and done, I ended up with waterfall and stream leading into a wetland filter and fountain-scape, then feeding into a series of waterfalls and down into a beautiful pond in my backyard. They completely transformed my property, and I couldn't be happier with the finished product. They added stepping stones, character boulders, mystery falls, plant pockets, koi caves, all with a true artistic attention to detail. In the front they constructed a beautiful pondless waterfall, even incorporating an 18ft long tree stump/log sourced local to my property, adding loads of character. Between the front and back yard they continued the transformation and built a series of decomposed granite pathways bordered by concrete mow-curbs, low voltage lighting, drought tolerant plants, and forest floor mulch. They did this all on time and within budget, and even worked an extra day over the weekend to help me meet a deadline before hosting my company party. Conclusion: I would highly recommend Columbia Water Gardens. They were professional, and true artists. Carl quoted me fair rates, and made the process pleasant. After mud slides caused damages of chaotic proportions in forest falls, Carl and his excavator came to save these lovely locals from their muddy imprisonment. Not all heroes wear capes... Some can be found using a machine to dig, pull and toss big piles of dirt and rocks back where they belong with such skill that it seems like the machine is just an extension of himself. It will be a little while before things seem to be back to the way they were before the mudslides. But thanks to Carl and other people volunteering their time, the people in forest falls and other locals will continue enjoying their beautiful mountain town in peace. I have been struggling the past couple of days....something was wrong with one of my koi, the rest were fine...but this big girl just didn't look right to me and she didn't eat breakfast that first morning. I immediately checked parameters, we had vacuumed less than 2 weeks prior, had done a water change, used Pond Prime, beneficial bacteria...blah blah blah....we couldn't think of a thing more we could do This was the ONLY fish that seemed unhappy. I reached out to Carl Petite, who I've met through some online forums. I sent him this video and he agreed, this fish wasn't happy. We thought maybe it was something internal. I live in TX and he's in CA, so I called a "fish Dr" in my area. He too couldn't figure out what was wrong with this fish. Everything in their habitat seems fine This morning, I went to ck on the piggies and now another fish is swimming "weird", but this one is still eating....so I take a video and send to Carl. He called immediately and asked if we had a GFI to the pond. That was a big "NO".....he said he thinks something is shorting out and electrifying the water. I happened to mention that we had these underwater lights that started doing weird things....when I would try to change the lights with the remote, not all the lights in-line would change to the same color....I never payed much attention, it didn't matter to me. Bingo!!! From any north facing window in the house, and from any vantage point on our decking, the eye is now drawn to the gentle flow of water over large simmering Palm Springs Gold boulders as it wanders gracefully down to a bottomless pool where the cycle is again repeated--pumped up, meanders down, singing as it goes, collected and returned. This lovely work of art replaces...well it replaces a baron deck. As the devastating news of the death of our youngest son settled in, we were faced with a host of issues no parent wants to confront but slowly the idea emerged to create some sort of "place" at our home to celebrate our son's life and host some of his ashes. Our second son had encountered a classmate from Middle School here in Redlands whose company COLUMBIA WATER GARDENS specialized in pools and water falls and artful work with rocks and blocks. Not knowing even the broadest outlines of what we were looking for we met with Carl Petite, our son's long-lost acquaintance and the owner manager inspiration behind CWG. He came to us at the end of a long day of work, and as if by magic somehow encouraged us to begin talking--talking about our son, talking about our pain, talking about our ill-defined wish to create "something" here near us to celebrate our son's life. I'm certain (well I exaggerate) Carl couldn't even spell hard sell. He listened empathetically, then pulled out his iPhone and began to show us some of his work as our eyes kept wandering to that open unused corner of the decking. Within an hour or more with Carl's gentle but expert help we had sketched out a water fall that he "might" be able to build for us in time for our Celebration of Life planned on our son's birthday in October. Within days Carl had drawn up a tentative project to scale (all projects he said are artistic works in progress--a declaration we were delighted to observe firsthand.) We met once more to go over general details, budget and schedule all of which were subsequently delivered electronically to us in thoughtful detail. One morning Carl's crew arrived and the magic began. Jose Ian and Octavio--and on occasion Carl himself, commenced the process of sawing through decking, moving dirt, hauling in gigantic boulders, rocks and dirt, blocks for the wall, rubber for the water channel. We marveled at the complexity of the project--water, pumps, electricity, lighting, landscaping--but we marveled more at the creative genius of all involved. Carl arrived on the first day with a can of orange spray paint and traced out generally where the water garden would go. We thought it off center. It was. Deliberately so. And it was brilliant in that regard--and then the work began. The work was basically done by the four mentioned men, working under the blazing hot July sun, from before 8 until after 5 daily for 2 weeks. Brief stop for lunch and then back at it. These 3 and Carl became family, adopted by us and Zona, the family dog. They were consistently of good humor, almost playful with us an our many questions, tolerant of modest suggestions and incredibly knowledgeable about their work. ("Sure you want to plant a palm near here...the root system will not be friendly to the--") Some artist use pencils, some paint, some oils. Ian, Jose. Octavio and Carl? Boulders and blocks. Boulders weighing up to 500 pounds! Try sometime making art with these--but art they did. We'd watch the careful placement of a huge boulder...the crew would back off, look at its placement from 5 different angles, come back and move it this way or that 6 inches, or tilt it one way or another until they were satisfied. And when they were satisfied? We were delighted as well. As the project neared conclusion, Carl came one morning with three pieces of driftwood. You see two of these clearly in the photo, front right and center. He was coming to Redlands from a project in the mountains when he spotted the wood and knew precisely where these 3 random pieces belonged. Again, the unerring eye and touch of an artist--spontaneous, not called for in the design, nor previously thought about. I should find some way to offer some thoughtful critic of the entire project least the reader dismiss the whole of this as fluff, so this: we did notice dust flying the day they hauled in the dirt, and there was the noise of the jackhammer as they crafted the shapes of the rocks, but other than these? Nothing. Columbia Water Gardens begin with Carl Petite. He's platinum. Smart, hardworking, a talented designer, but also an extraordinary human being--gracious, kind, soft spoken and caring. He loves his work, his crew, and we came to believe he loves his clients as well. His crew mirrors these talents and their work in our back yard will stand for us as long as we live as a celebration of a son too soon gone and the work of Carl's crew. read more

Well, Carl responded to my review, stating that he "usually doesn't respond to false reviews".... ha! The reason he responded is that he recognized all the true accusations in my review and was hoping to convince folks that he runs a reputable business. I am going to add another episode to my journey with Columbia Water Gardens....After the first interaction with Carl and his crew, I was happy with the results. (This went drastically downhill very soon as you can see by reading my previous review) So....being happy with the company in the beginning.... I was telling one of my tennis buddies about my pond, and found out she had just bought a house that had an existing pond that was not working and she wanted to remedy that and "spruce it up" a bit. I recommended Columbia Water Gardens (mistake!). She had them come out and tell her what they could do to fix it. She hired them and set a date to do the work. Her car was in the shop and not in the driveway and she did not answer the knock on the door (not sure why..?) the crew, assuming she was not home, went ahead and began taking their tools etc. to the back yard. She watched from a window....their behavior was inappropriate....playing, joking, tossing rocks back and forth and wasting time. She eventually went out and the work began. Later in the day she went out to check on the progress....things were not how she wanted it and the plants they had put in were all "dead looking". (I have not seen her pond at all, this is info from her). As she was expressing her dis-satisfaction with the progress to the one in charge, the other crew member was standing to the side throwing little pebbles at his partner's boots! How immature! The last time I spoke with my friend, she said the issues had not been resolved and she was not getting any response from the company. She also stated that she "saw a law suit in the making". I am not sure how her issues turned out, but this is typical of how this company does business! In his response to my first review, Carl called me a "nuisance customer"....well I intend to uphold and continue part of that statement....I am going to keep being a "nuisance" but not a "customer". After reading all of the reviews it is obvious that CWG is a good pond designer and contractor. However it is even more obvious that their retail, customer service and follow through needs improvement. I had to actually dispute a charge on my cc because I got so many excuses about why they couldn't deliver a part that I had prepaid and ordered through CWG. They said it was on backorder, so I called the manufacturer and it wasn't. They said the part would arrive in a week and it never came. Finally I was able to reach the Owner by calling their after hours emergency line (they do not answer their regular business line and they do not return voice mails) Carl said he would just refund my cc. I let two more weeks go by before I called my cc company and disputed the charge. It doesn't seem like there are enough ponds around to be so complacent . The business is not sustainable and the Owner is clearly having cash flow issues or is a total lying flake. Either way, I'm not going to do business with them anymore. read more

I only have experience with ordering from the Columbia Water Gardens website .. and it wasn't pleasant I placed an order and a few days later saw the order was "On Hold". I called, left a message to ask why and when could I expect my fountain basin and never got a response. Few days later, called again; ditto. I then searched for reviews and discovered what was probably going to happen .. Nothing. Now a week after making the order and charging my CC, the order status was now "settled - awaiting invoice". I called to ask what this meant, no response. I finally emailed instructing them to cancel my order. I then contacted my CC company to dispute the charges. Two days later I received a "temporary refund" by the CC company. During all this time I never heard back from Columbia Water Gardens. Not until 1 month after I called and emailed to cancel the order did I receive an email stating that my order has been canceled and a refund to my CC forthcoming. I had an awful experience with Columbia Water Gardens and I would not recommend them. I wanted a couple of PondMax LED lights for my water feature. I found their website and ordered them. A week later I get a phone call from Bob at Columbia Water Gardens telling me that their website didn't work and that my order never went through but he isn't sure if my credit card was charged. He calls me back a couple of hours later to tell me that my credit card was never charged and they need to redo everything. Fine, even though it is a huge waste of time, I do it. I was told by Carl when I placed the order that it would ship that day. They are in California, I am in Washington. I should have it in 3, maybe 4 days. A week later I still don't have it. I call to ask where it is. Bob takes my call and tells me that he will look into it and get back to me. Bob never calls me back. I am out of town for a few days so I figure the lights will be there when I get back. I get back from my trip and I still don't have the lights. I call again and get Bob. He tells me he will look into it and get back to me. It is 3:00 and I still haven't heard anything. I call again and get Bob. I tell Bob that I want to cancel my order and would like to speak with Carl. He informs me that Carl isn't available and he hasn't gotten back to me because it isn't the end of the day yet (they close at 4). I spent three weeks waiting for them to get their act together and got nothing. I do a lot of on-line shopping and this is one of the worst experiences I have ever had. I will never do business with Columbia Water Gardens again and I would not recommend them to anyone. 5/1/2018 Update Columbia Water Gardens charged my credit card for these items. I e-mailed them on 4/5 and told them that the order was cancelled. I further instructed them to credit the purchase price to my credit card. It is almost a month later and I have not received a credit. I have contacted my credit card company and have disputed the charge. read more
