The place where I've ordered a turkey for a few years had a weird, unclear deadline for their Thanksgiving orders so this year I needed to quickly find another place (or try). Had I ordered from the place I usually have, I would have had to pay a shipping fee of $35 whether I had it shipped to my home or to the business. I hadn't heard of Joseph's before but decided to take a chance. I placed my order by phone the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and they took it with no problem, no extra charges; they also took the bone out for me. I was a bit nervous just because I hadn't tried this place before, and if there was a problem there wouldn't be much chance to fix it or easily switch gears. But I needn't have worried. While it would be helpful if they decided whether they were going to use numbers or just a line (I pulled a number upon entering, but they weren't advancing the numbers and instead just taking people who said they were next), I was in and out within ten minutes. The employees were helpful. Like many butchers, they have more than just the meat but it's not a grocery store (though I found I could have gotten the baguette that I made a separate stop to procure). The turkey breast I bought was at least half of what it would have cost at the place I've used in the past. With that kind of savings, paying their 4% credit card fee was fine by me (pay cash to save yourself the fee). Parking is easy; it's Dunning, not Lake View. Will definitely come back, possibly sooner than later since I've been wanting to try making a pot roast and I expect they'd have the right cut of beef for that. Unbelievably beautiful experience for us. From the moment we arrived and immediately were greeted with the wonderful smells any carnivore would appreciate until the final tab and exit, were all picture perfect. This is the butcher Mom looked for every time we moved. She was relentless and I'm sure happy that I have that gene too! It was crowded but everyone was polite and orderly. You kind of got a feel for which butcher you were hoping to draw . It really didn't matter. They were all vastly different but all unique and unbelievably helpful. If you live within 50 miles of here, please go out of your way and visit. You will be glad you did! If you're within 100 miles, bring a big cooler with ice and make a day trip out of it. You too, will be happy with the time spent. Just typing this review brings back the sensation of being there and creates flashback hunger. I can't say enough about this place as every time I go it's amazing and every time I cook something I bought there it's one of the best things I've ever made. Not only are the meats great there, they also have an amazing selection, which kind of surprised me the first time I walked in. In addition to the meat counters, they have a ton of products on sale in their small but well stocked grocery section to help supplement the supplies you'd typically head to a butcher shop to buy. The workers are also always friendly and helpful. If there's a cut of meat you're not quite sure if you want or you're not sure you know how to cook well, don't be afraid to ask the people working there. As for my favorites: skirt steak, super thin sandwich steaks, the very tasty and reasonably priced ground beef (if you get multiple pounds, ask for them separated in 1 pound bags), the frozen chicken Kiev's, and of course the sweet Italian sausage can go great with orzo and spinach and halved grape tomatoes. Visited Joseph's for the first time yesterday. We planned to get Italian beef sandwiches but found out you buy the beef (and they give you gravy) and the rolls and make it at home. The sandwich was the best Italian beef I've ever had. Ben was so nice and spent time explaining what pot roast we should get based on where it's cut from. They were set up for customers with a tent outside and controlled entry into the store. The shop itself is a small, clean neighborhood butcher shop and deli. I feel blessed to have an amazing butcher shop so close to me. Joseph's fulfills my family and I's meat cravings. We have a hankering for steak quite often and it's nice to be able to pop in here for some quality ribeye and t-bone. I came here once before with my buddy. He is Sicilian and use to own a restaurant. He turned me on to their Italian sausage. They were delicious. I've been wanting to come back and happened to be passing by so I stopped in and got some more of their perfectly seasoned hot Italian sausage. Their steaks look remarkable.
