A pretty nice and well visited trail system. Parking lot was very large, even though there were lots of visitors that day plenty of parking. I was on my lunch break and unfortunately did not get to investigate the trail system very much. I only did about a half mile. The level one trail I did was asphalt very wide and could easily be traversed by someone with disabilities or in a wheelchair. However, it was 100% uphill lol My short little jaunt got my heart rate up pretty quickly due to the elevation change. I would definitely like to come back when I have more time and hike some of the loop trails. It's a very nice system. The sides of the trail was mostly dense underbrush, lots of cedars and other trees so I did not recognize. It is a nice little break out to nature after lunch. . I would come back. read more

Very unique park. I like this park because they offer different levels of trails meaning that some are wheelchair accessible and have rails (which is great for me and my pregnancy clumsiness), and some are more of a gravel trail, others are off roading. Very nice having the different options at the same location. The trails were nice a clean and the park seems very taking care of. read more

This is one of my favorite hikes in town. It is great being able to park and hike up to a vantage point and look out over the area and see downtown in the distance. We have gone morning and afternoon and enjoyed it any time of day. It is also great getting up to the top to see the what is remaining of the tower. It is also not a super long hike, so it is great for adults or kids too. read more

This is a beautiful park. It's adjacent to a library and an elementary school, and there is ample parking. There is one mail trail, which is a little under a mile and paved the whole way (wheelchair accessible!). There are also some offshoot trails if you want to go a little further. At the lookout tower (accessible from one of the offshoot trails) there is a water fountain and bench. I visited on a cool day, so I didn't have to worry about the heat but there it lots of shade. The whole trail smells like juniper. What a lovely park! read more

Beautiful views at the top! The trails aren't very long so I ended up running around twice but most of it's under the shade of the trees and they have improved some of the trails. There aren't many directional signs like most trail areas but it's basically in the middle of urban area so there's no real threat to get lost. There were a lot of little side trails I noticed but I stayed on the main paved ones for the most part. I'll probably come back to this one. read more

Great uphill trails for those trying to get some active minutes in! I I wouldn't say it's the most advanced hiking trail, which is why I docked a star. Also no public restrooms except for a porta-potty, aww. That being said, this is great for beginners and it's never overly crowded in my experience. Wow!! I just wanted a place to walk a bit while waiting in a child's activity, and I I hit the jackpot! This is a beautiful, shady park with varying levels of difficulty on the trails. I used The AllTrails app and followed the 2.6 mile "Loop Trail to Lookout Tower Trail. There are level one handicap access paved trails up to the tower too. The entire trail was shaded except for the outer part of "North Deer Loop". Trees provide the effect of air conditioning, so when it's hot, this would be a great place to go walk, hike, or run. I will definitely be making some trips back with the family in tow, even though it's 20 miles from my house. read more

UNSAFE for women walking by themselves!! I was about to go and sit on the brick ledge that over looks some trees next to the tower ( it was empty with no one around) but something told me not to and just to sit at the bench in front of the tower instead. As soon as other people were out of sight and I was alone at the bench the man in blue ( pictured at the water fountain) comes out of woods on the side of the lookout area I was about to sit at on his phone staring me down. He walks past me maybe 5 feet and stops and continues to type on his phone, and keeps looking me up and down. He attempts to smile at me and I mug him. He then walks in front of me and pretends to drink water as he continues to type down on his phone. All of a sudden a 2nd man comes out of the trees ( hidden) from the exact spot the second man is while typing on his phone and looks directly at me. At this point one of them is on my left and one of them is on my right. So I stand up and scoot back. Immediately I call my mom and speak loudly stating " there's two weird men trying to snatch me up". Immediately they took off on the path, one goes up the left entrance and one goes up the right. What they don't know is the trees are thin enough for me to see them communicating with eachother together as they walk up. I immediately start running to my car. About 2 mins from the front entrance I start fast walking instead, still otp with my mom. When all of a sudden the second guy pops out speed walking from a path on the side and ends up 5ft infront of me and starts staring at me. I immediately yell out " sir I know what you are doing, you are trying to snatch women and I've already told my mom and contacted the police ( that part was a lie I just wanted to scare him). Immediately he starts walking faster and hops into his car. I make sure to get a picture of his license plate. His buddy is still hiding up there. Ladies be careful. I give tremendous thanks to the City of San Antonio Parks department every time I visit one of our awesome parks. This one is no exception. It's changed a LOT since the days of my youth (see the *END* of my review for what it used to be like). It's a mix of paved and unpaved trails. Some with inclines, some with no inclines. So basically, there is something for everyone here. If you hit every single trail, you can get between 3.2 and 3.5 miles in - but that will include the unpaved trails. A few of them might be considered moderately difficult for a beginner, but not overwhelmingly so, or dangerous, etc. The steepest incline is about 165 feet in elevation change within half a mile stretch. There's a cool "castle" tower at the top of the hill with a lot of history behind it (it's fenced off, so you can't go inside it). There are signs in the parking lot near the trailhead that explain the history, so I won't bore you with that. The views: on a clear day, you can see the skyline of downtown San Antonio. The bottom line is, this is a fun hike with something for everyone. Use one of the various hiking apps out there if you want to find all the trails. * This has nothing to do with the current state of Comanche Lookout, but back in my youth, it wasn't a park. It was a place where all the underage, reckless youth went to drink, party, and do other things. You could actually DRIVE to the top of it if you had a 4WD vehicle. Either that, or you found yourself hiking up it in the dark (and there were no paved trails back then) carrying a 12 pack of beer. You could go inside the tower back then - there's nothing in it though - it's just a hollow tower and doesn't even have any stairs. There were multiple small bonfires going, with kids from multiple area high schools hanging out and trying to stay out of trouble. There were at least 100 kids up there on any given Friday or Saturday night - and we NEVER got busted! If you have seen the movie "Dazed and Confused" checkout the party at the moon tower scene. It was EXACTLY like that - with the exception of the moonlight tower. Hopefully, the statute of limitations has run out by now and I haven't incriminated myself in any criminal activities. read more

A beautiful 96 acre park owned by the city of San Antonio. Excellent trails for running or walking. You can go up, down or around the hill. Lots of shade cover and birds to serenade you. If you go up to the top of the hill there is an excellent view and a watchtower that was built in the 1920's (the owner at that time was going o build a castle but this is as far as he got). The Comanche used the hill as a vantage point to spot wagon trains to rob and animals to hunt. read more

I love coming here and going for a short run. There's a beautiful view and the path isn't too long. Very doable for someone like me who is getting back in shape. I didn't see a restroom. A maze of trails wind up a hill that has surprises on top: a quirky old stone tower (alas, it's fenced off -- no climbing) and benches with scenic Hill Country views, including the downtown San Antonio skyline. The paths up to the top are in good condition for all kinds of walkers, from the young to the elderly. We always see lots of good dogs with their people on the trails. Upon arrival I felt the brisk breeze slide off my excitable cheek... there were men with calf high socks, and women with pink headbands as far as the eye could see. They pretend they're here to workout, but in all reality, they're just trying to fill the void they've created by becoming absolutely nothing in a world that gave them so many options. Leaving the house makes them feel better than sitting on the couch and watching tv, but at the end of the day, both activities are as effective as screaming into a black hole, but off they go, jogging up the hill, just to let their cubicle mates know they did it... right behind them are my second favorite people. People of all ages, and back ground. Some in shorts, some in jeans... but all with their phones in hand. They aren't here to tell their neighbors, or brag to their ex that they're working out again. They just wanna catch em all. See these people are my second favorite because they're willing to admit their life is meaningless so they stack themselves behind a screen to hide from their pain. See that's the goal of everyone that comes here, to hide from the pain. To escape reality. Which brings me to my favorite type of person at Comanche Hill... See, you won't find this person on the paved path. You may only find them if your tennis ball takes a bad bounce in the attempt to show that your dog is as smart as a dog. You'll peer into the bushes to get to the ball... and there you will find them. The icing of the hill, the creme of the culture. You see deep in these woods, there's a sub community of junkies. They're here to escape, but these people didn't need to brag about an exercise, they didn't need to catch a bulbasaur, they are chasing an actual fucking dragon. 4 stars because the needles are a bit dangerous. read more

This is a great dog walk park but not for a local walker that just want to immerse in the scenery and enjoy a nice walk. There is a lot of dog walkers that venture here. I was surprised to smell urine and feces while walking and see feces on the paved path as well. It was quite overwhelming and as a pet/dog owner myself, it was too much for me to bare. I didn't take my dog with me on this day and probably should've done research before coming. I won't be back and I do not recommend. read more

** Warning** It's likely that you will get lost in this little bitty park (please refer to the the yin/yang trail signs). You may also twist your ankle while running and jamming to Rick Ross' Maybach Music because the 'paved' trails haven't been paved since Rick was in prison (please refer to VH1's Behind the Music for further information on that). Other than those two things, this park is swell. The meandering tree lined trails curve around the central hill. There are gentle, and some steep, inclines to challenge those leg muscles because if you're going to eat the tamales and poboys, you have to be willing to jog uphill every once in a while. Maybe that's what the yin yang signs are about....balance... The view from the top of the hill is great and must be even better near sunset. Challenge yourself by sprinting up the rocky, unpaved slope of the hill and feel the burn! read more

After bouncing between California and Arizona for past 11 years and being able to hike some amazing trails there, this particular park didn't wow me. But I appreciate the historical aspect of this area and the well marked trails. The whole loop itself is about 4.5 miles total. Short. So this spot is great for beginners and people who want to go on a short stroll. There are 3 different levels to make things even easier. Most of the trails are paved. Overall, a really easy walk/hike/run to the top and back. Pluses: -Lots of birds...gorgeous, bright red cardinals everywhere!...bunnies and lizards -Pretty spring blooms. -Dog friendly (must be on leash & pickup after your pet please!) -Stroller/wheelchair friendly -workout stations -water fountains -benches -picnic areas -doggie bags and trash cans Minuses: -Fire ant mounds everywhere! My lab and I are both allergic :( I brought epipens for both of us. These critters make living in Texas very stressful! 799 days left.... -People not picking up after their pets. So annoying when bags and trash cans are provided every few feet...Grrrr! -Not very scenic -Too short Would I come back? Yes! Why? Absolutely breathtaking spot! My sister convinced me to check it out with her, I was opposed to it because I was wearing boots with a baby heel. I fell in love with it fast until we got lost LOL What was supposed to be a 5 minute quick look turned into an hour hike and an unbuttoned blouse. The map didn't really help much nor did the people running or walking which I completely understood. I will return but with proper shoes, attire, and red beans. read more

I've really enjoyed our random visits to Comanche Lookout over the past 2 years. The two rocky trails that lead straight up the hill can be pretty killer on a hot day! It's always a great way to get some fresh air and exercise. The picnic tables spread throughout the park provide an excellent space to have a picnic, read a book, or cram for an Accounting exam 4 hours before it's supposed to start! :) I would really love to see them actually do something with the castle-like tower at the top, but I can see why it's fenced off since it appears to be some sort of historical landmark. My doggie really enjoys our walks here and I know for sure that the moment we get home he will go straight for his water bowl and then eventually his bed. That's how tiring (although very fun) the trails can be! Once you make the rewarding trek all the way to the top, feel free to take a breather and just enjoy all of the beautiful scenery from up above. It's quite a drive from where I live but I always leave in such a peaceful mood that the drive is totally worth it. read more

Not a ton of trail here - 4.5 miles total, iirc - but they are wide, varied surface, and incredibly well-kept/clean. There's a fair bit of slope, so you can get in a pretty great workout if you make more than one loop/lap. Exercise equipment, water fountains, trash cans, and (squeee!!) recycling bins scattered throughout. The view from the top is fantastic - the downtown San Antonio skyline is much prettier from this distance and elevation than it is up close :) - and it's fun to imagine what the Comanche might have done up there years ago, and walk along the giant foundation of a historic owner's home and try and picture what it might've looked like had it come to fruition. read more

This is a great place to take a dog or even just run/walk by yourself. There are a bunch of trails that are right next to a public library and are pretty well kept. There is even exercise equipment along part of the trails. I love coming up here with Kadence and letting her explore the wooded areas of the trails. The trails themselves are not very long though. I completed the entire thing in about an hour but if you get lost or turned around, which I did at first, it can seem longer. There is plenty of shade in the hotter days as well as a dog/human water fountain at the top and over at the start by the library. There is also a kid's playground across from the library with a few picnic tables for people to eat a lunch or something. There are a few scattered around on the trails as well. I have mix feelings about this park. For me personally, I'm not a big fan of this park, because I like parks that are good for jogging, trail run or hiking. This park actually have all three, IMO, L1 = Jogging, L2 = Trail run and L3 = Hiking. However, the only way to describes my feeling about this park is jack of all trades, master of none. The hiking level although tough, but very short. Trail run is good, but again, short. Jogging trail is actually the best part since it is does have elevation. The reason I like parks that are good for one type of run is because I need to know what kind of shoes to wear, I have weak ankle, and I wear different shoes for hiking, trail run and jogging. Since both of the trail run and hiking are pretty short, I had to wear my running shoes, and I have to be very careful where I"m stepping when I hike and trail run. HOWEVER, the park it self isn't bad, just like different food, we all have our own preferences, so I'm not dissing the park at all. If you are into sprint, uphill runs, I think L1 is actually pretty good for that, since it does have an uphill slope and it is pavement, so it has good traction. Two other minor notes, even though we are on a hill, there aren't many view points. Also, the directions to each level aren't that great, and there is no sign for L3, I only assumed it was L3, but it didn't bug me too much since they are all loops, you eventually end up where you started. read more

Well maintained park, NICE paved walkways in case you wanna bring a stroller of a friend recovering from a surgery that might be in a wheel chair. The trail was actually not nearly as hard as I had imagined, as I've been out of shape and practice for a long time. I did it twice just to make sure I felt like I was actually doing something. The tower at the top is super cool and an icon from an older era. I enjoyed looking at it but wished I could have touched it, but it's fenced in. There are a whole mess of unpaved paths also if you want to get some real wilderness feel. Lots of different vegetation, birds, and butterflies. The lookouts are cool too, as there's not a lot of other elevated places around this side of town. My family and I love this park. We live right down the street, so it's very convenient. There is easy access to this park from 1604/Nacogdoches. The trails are extensive, especially with the recent additions. There are several pieces of workout equipment spread throughout the trail ways as well. The fellow trail runners/walkers say hello, make sure you do the same! We love hiking to the top of the hill and taking in the view, you can even see downtown/the Tower of the Americas from up there! We like to end our journey through the trails at the playground next door. There is also a library next door where my daughter enjoys checking out books. Pay a visit, enjoy the views and if you bring your pet, please remember to pick up after them. The park even provides baggies. :) read more

A nice place to go for an evening walk or a quick jog. It's clean, and I've always felt relatively safe here. Maybe it's because I frequently see SAPD patrolling the area? Which may mean that it isn't as safe as I think? Hmm. Anyway, I've never been mugged or even stalked here. So that's a positive thing. My only complaint is the parking. Such a tiny lot! If the weather is nice, don't be surprised if you have to wait for a parking spot. read more
