My husband loves to fish in his canoe on the Delaware River. This is the extent of my knowledge of fishing. It was his birthday so I decided to get him a new fishing pole. I checked Yelp for the best bait and tackle joint nearest to me and Combs was the only 5-star recommendation. As soon as I entered their shop I could hear a friendly booming voice (who I later came to find out was Bill the owner) assisting other customers. He was so knowledgeable and welcoming, without being condescending (I feel like some shop owners can be rude and expect you to know as much about the products as they do, but not Bill!). I explained my situation (that I literally had no experience whatsoever with fishing stuff) and right away he sprang into action looking for the perfect pole. He took time and consideration on choosing the right one and then he even put the string (wire? sorry, fishermen) in the reel (?) for me and put these awesome clips on it for easy travel. I've been recommending Combs to everyone I know who fishes. This will be the only shop we frequent for our fishing needs. Definitely worth the trip anywhere on the island. Way more than a bait shop. More like having a best friend who's a car mechanic. Billy owns and runs the place and is as welcoming to the novice fishermen as well as the pro. No ego, no condescending,,,,,, just a great guy running a great business who know his stuff. Billy and his wife run the store On Merrick road in Amityville. He's designs and makes many of the rigs on the wall. He goes out most day and gives detailed fishing reports to his dedicated clientele. Could I buy stuff cheaper on Amazon or at Dicks, sure. Seller of bait and tackle. This is my go-to spot for info on where the big stripers are going to be on the south shore. I like to surf fish and when I am going out at night for stripers, I like to have an idea of where they have been hitting and a fresh supply of live eels as bait - they just love those eels. It is often said that you get what you pay for. At Combs Bait it means you get quality bait, incredible service and information that is dead-on on for fishing reports and conditions. The guy you want to talk to is Billy. Even when the store is busy, he will offer great insight and advice and take as much time as you need. I live 10-15 miles away from this bait & tackle store, and I pass a lot of these stores, that are much closer to where I live, but I go to Combs Bait & Tackle for a reason and that reason is the owner Bill, always friendly and ready to help you, and Bill is a fishermen like you and me and knows his stuff! I just had my second fishing rod customized by owner Bill of Combs Bait & Tackle, I had about a foot or so taken off a 7' rod it was way to soft for my liking, and Bill extended the handle for me too. Bill does great rod and reel repair, and as I mentioned customizing as well, all at affordable prices! Combs B&T is not a huge store, but it"s LOADED with all the goodies a fishermen & fishing lady could ever want. Bill even has his OWN brand of fishing necessity's AND accessories, you wont find at other bait & tackle stores. Need to know where the fish are biting, and what bait to use? Bill will pull out a map and show you. He also has the right bait on hand to catch em too. Why are my and other Combs supporter's positive reviews being filtered, and shown as filtered at the bottom of the page? I'm a hardcore and longtime fisherman. Over the years, I've been to all the shops on LI. They all have the same tackle, same prices, nice guys. But Combs is the only place I will ever go. Billy always shows me the spots to go to, pulls out his map and points me in the right direction. He'll recommend a different lure than the one I picked, even if its cheaper. He was a fishing captain back in the day and has been running this shop since the 80's- this guy knows his stuff. He knows the channels, the hot spots of the day, what bait to use to reel them in, and always has on his scanner/radio checking in with all the guys out on the water and listening to where the fish are biting, what the best spots are, and where there's no fish to be found. Billy's's got the inside track and literally knows in real-time where the action is. He helped my neice for forty five minutes, showing her how to use a pole for the first time, how to use bobbers, he was so great with her. All my buddies go there and refuse to go anywhere else, even if they have to drive a little bit of a distance. In my humble opinion, best tackle shop on Long Island- not because of what they sell, but the tips, tricks, info and time he gives to each and every customer that walks through that door. I have been shopping here for the past few years for my bait and tackle. Bill and his staff have always been very helpful. This morning though, Bill had a recommendation which is going to be a life changer. I often go fishing with my senior citizen aunt. She has very bad arthritis in her fingers, and often has them lock up at inopportune times, like when she has a fish on the line. I asked Bill if he had something that could possibly help her. He recommended an arm rest that she could attach to her pole, then she wouldn't grip her pole so hard, and maybe avoid finger lockup. She tried it today, and she was able to fish comfortably for the entire time we were on the water. When I stopped back after to let him know that it worked, he was just as happy as I, that it worked. It is a rarity in today's world to have someone genuinely cares about their customers. This is why I continually return to shop here.
