My original review needed an update since it's now been 9+ years they've been around! CSz Boston fully settled into the Roslindale Rozzie Square Theater and I'm so excited for them that they are outgrowing the space where renovations will be underway to accommodate for an even larger space in the future! As their website alludes, they are Improv Sketch Comedy similar to the popular "Whose line is it anyway?" show, but much cleaner and a larger rotating local cast/teams. Recently attended a show since before the pandemic with a group of 5 others. I didn't realize that they are reserving seats for your group/party for online purchases. Honestly it's a nice touch with the erasable placard where they create a pun on your name. So if you have a difference between preferred name and legal/credit card transaction name then you can figure out a way to use it. I'm glad I got to the location early to find our seats. They open ~20-30 minutes before showtime so 5:30pm for 6pm show on Saturday. Unfortunately I told my friends to individually buy their own tickets so we were somewhat scattered between the 2 sides. Something to note for next time that to sit together you can email them if you pay separately (with names of the group). Or just book altogether in advance. The night we went was a full house so it may be risky to wait until the last minute or buying in person unless you show up when doors open. The online price shows $16 so I'm not sure if they have managed to keep the price largely the same as $15 for the last time, before COVID when we purchased in person. I'm so glad I was also able to use up a free ticket voucher we won last time! :D Speaking of the price I love how they are able to keep the cost AND content accessible! So many activities in Boston add up quickly so it's also great to see "Tonight's Loyal Fans" of all ages! There also appears to be a Yelp deal offer! Parking in the area is limited but we arrived earlier and got lucky with street parking. They have concessions and beverages that you can purchase. There's also a short intermission at the ~7PM mark before the final games. I think the 90 minute time is perfect. As I mentioned in the original review, it is based loosely on sports team. We had a "Designated Jokester" (DJ) role as well where they played for both teams depending on the round/points. They cycled through various games that were extremely entertaining and highly dependent on audience suggestions. I am always too slow with the shout for suggestions haha so unfortunately I didn't get that moment to shine as the kids carried our group. Games I remember from the past shows: - 4 corners (rotating location scenes with 2 people in a square) - Voiceover? (teammates create the dialogue while the other teammates act it out and pretend to be the actual ones talking) - Name rap battle (single syllable rhymes) - My Movie (fabricated titles from prompt and ref decides if they should expand) - The Royal Court (Audience participants demand the squires fetch them audience suggestions) - 5 things (chaotic audience suggestions of activities replaced with more random suggestions) Looking forward to the next time for more laughs and maybe thinking of some suggestion prompts! Sarah Filman is exceptional as an instructor of Improv for Anxiety. She's compassionate and thoughtful in the excercises she offers the class. She explains the activities clearly and pauses just enough, without too much time, for reflection. I'm trying to move beyond my critical thoughts that cause my anxiety and feel that Sarah pushes us just enough to move beyond the thinking and toward the movement. Her class is challenging at times, but very much worth the effort! read more

Had a great experience, we got to see a special Promedy (Prom themed) version of show, very family friendly went with my 13 and 8 yr old, both enjoyed, as hard as Improv comedy can be, these performers are masters of their craft ,impressed out quick witted and funny they all were , next time in Boston ,I'll be sure to stop by again!!! read more

People talk about "busting a gut laughing" and that sort of thing, but it's obviously just metaphorical. Until it's not. I went here on a first date and had a great time. I had heard about it from several friends who enjoyed it, so I thought "why not?" Not the dating part. I had done that before. I just hadn't been to ComedySportz. Anyway, the last game they played was called "Hey Waiter" and it's about a waiter. My description probably doesn't sound too funny, but I laughed a lot. Too much, in fact. Long story short, my spleen ruptured, but they were nice enough to give me free tickets to come back again. There was never a second date, but it all worked out okay because I ended up marrying my gastroenterologist. Anyway, great place. read more

I didn't know what to expect because I've been to some hit and miss improv shows, but this one only had one cringey part -- and it was totally the extras on stage and not the performers fault. The instructor was knowledgeable, engaging and fun and had a phenomenal talent for making everyone feel comfortable and welcome. I walked out with way more than just an experience! If not for your participation, I would have gone on with nary an inkling of your comedic troupe. I appreciate that you provide family friendly fare in this world filled with lewd or otherwise not necessarily appropriate humor. It was nice to be at a comedy show where I need not fear any unexpected bombs (f- or otherwise). One that would be considered acceptable for multi-generational consumption. I enjoyed participating in the shouting out of ideas, laughed aloud now and then, and smiled a plenty as the two teams competed in the playing of the different games. First time at the Boston venue (having laughed hard at the Chicago venue this summer). The players were dedicated performers and made for a great evening of family fun. This is a lot like TV's "Who's Line Is It Anyway", except with much more audience participation. Things got very silly at times, involving all sorts of physical acting. Definitely recommend, although the theater space is sparse which I suspect stems from the Boston venue being a fledgling member of this 30-city troupe. Can't wait to see it mature and become a destination event for the region. It surely will with time. read more

Looking for laughs on a Friday? In JP, or able to go there? Then ComedySportz Boston is what you're looking for! Expect: two teams of improvisers attempting to score points by making you laugh - the games are "short form" and tend to have a gimmick. As an example, one game I saw was called "Parallel Universes" - the players had to keep three parallel storylines going (all suggested by the audience), switching between them when the referee blew his whistle, and continuing from exactly the same physical position, though the situation and characters were different. The whole show was a little more than an hour-and-a-half with a brief intermission. Everything is driven by audience suggestions - and everything is clean, so feel free to bring your little ones. The theatre is small, so you'll be right on top of the action. We left laughing! read more

This was such a fun time! Live improvised comedy on Friday and Saturday nights that is just as funny if you're on a date, with your kids, or flying solo. It's fast paced and the 90 minute show went by so quickly! It's one of the best deals in live theater in the area. I had such a great time at ComedySportz on Friday Night. The improv groups were both funny while keeping jokes appropriate. I even was one of the "loyal fans" that participated in a sketch. I could not stop laughing. I had a great time. The theater is a bit hidden and I drove by it 3 times before figuring out where it was, so allow extra time to find the theater and parking if you drive to the show. Concessions of water & candy are available at the theater. I was skeptical when I first arrived since there is a huge improv comedy scene in Boston, but the performers made me a ComedySportz believer. I'd return with friends. read more

Pros: -Street parking is pretty easy -Good value for the price ($15) since it runs almost 2 hours long with a short halftime break Cons: -Venue is pretty small and can get a little hot inside -Candy available at a small concession table but it is pricey -Totally agree with Elizabeth S. that almost 2 hours it felt too long to me. However, my lovely companion thought it was great that it was longer than expected since it meant many more laughs. These people are astonishingly quick witted. Don't be fooled by the "Sportz" in the name--aside from having a ref, a scoreboard, and two uniformed 3-player teams, this is NOT sports improv. Think more "who's line is it anyway": two crews battle in a series of different improv games and win points for each depending on who the audience likes more. This place is absolutely outstanding. We went to a show two kids (6 and 9), and we all had the best time. We had never been to an improv show and didn't know what to expect, and I don't know how they do it, but the entire show was hilariously funny for everyone, kids and adults. That seems really hard to do but they just nailed it. The actual space itself is so neat too, and there are lots of funny things that the team does to make it fun before the show even starts. This is a stellar review of the free drop-in test-the-waters improv class. As an introvert who avoids the limelight and takes time to think things through, I was apprehensive. I feared I'd be put on the spot and forced to "perform." But Courtney created a safe, collaborative, non-competitive space. All the exercises felt like play. By the end of class, I could see that she'd stacked the exercises, like blocks, to build skills that can serve us both onstage and off. read more
