Searching for a good lunch and up popped the name of the Salem Oak Diner. We quickly agreed to…read moregive it a try. A drive through Salem makes you wonder what this city was like in its glory days. Beautiful old homes ... classic mansions and then we spot this classic diner on Broadway. Ok, it looks a little worn but in the same moment you are transported back in time to an era where diners like this one could be found everywhere. Walking up you spot the music machines in each booth that once upon a time were connected to juke boxes . As you walk in you feel the comfort of a diner and the waitress calls out a welcome ... 'sit anywhere' and we choose a window booth. It's a classic diner menu with a printed sheet of specials at unbelievable prices. A couple of soup options so it was classic choices ... a mushroom cheeseburger that the owner will slap on the griddle and a tuna melt. The conversation with the waitress was non-stop (it was 230 and at first no one else was eating. It was a fun diner experience! Food was delivered hot ... another customer so the waitress went back to work. A great lunch! Fries were perfect and the burger juicy and flavorable!! Tuna melt perfect .. The rest rooms reminded us of being on a train in the 1950's! There's not much to Salem New Jersey but there is one awesome diner serving great food!!

Welcome to the Salem Oak Diner where a simple menu of American classics thrive. Fluffy omelettes too big for your plate and a cheeseburger so rare it's still breathing. Perfection. There's no artifice or pretension here, just a solid menu, comfortable surroundings and a check that won't devastate your wallet. If you're hungry in Salem, it's your own damn fault. Try the Salem Oak Diner. Five comfortable stars.

I have a unique and new take to share. But first I want to say that this place is so ADORABLE and…read morethe owner is a very sweet woman. She's running the cafe by herself but has helpers on some occasions. Her menu is especially unique because, although it's mostly an American menu, it also has Mediterranean/Middle Eastern options. The food is always fresh and yummy and menu prices are super low. This place is an excellent option if you want a quick bite and your goal is to satisfy your hunger. Similar comments have already been made repeatedly in other reviews. But here's what might be a new take. Cobbleston Cafe's average rating should be at least 4.7 and above and I'll tell you why I think it's not. It's because people are ridiculous. Honestly. I read the other reviews and their expectations of a CAFE are incredibly nonsensical. You can't enter a cafe and expect a full kitchen. Cafes like Starbucks, Peet's Coffee and even Panera are much larger places and don't have full kitchens. We all know Starbucks is overpriced and often sell stale menu items. This place is incredibly affordable, has a LOT more to choose from, and is 1000% better because it's so much more fresh! It's a cozy and smaller place. There's a reason locals love this cafe because it's satisfying, fresh and is priced very fairly. Have the right expectations and you'll also be giving it 5 stars! And if you prefer supporting local businesses, please stop by Cobblestone Cafe and support this wonderful lady too.

Wanted to try someplace new and this popped up. Headed on down and couldn't find them as Google…read moreMaps showed them near the end of the street. They're a little further down on the corner. Keep going to the stop sign. When you're at the stop sign look across the street to the left and they're right there. I got lucky and found street parking right in front of their door. Walked in and they were packed. One tiny table open squashed between two others and the bar were my options so I sat at the bar. I try to pay cash at Mom & Pops place so they're not hammered by the credit card fees. They were low on change and recommending credit cards. I dug around in my pockets and found exact change. They were all out of pastries but one. I wanted to try their pasties de nada but all that was left was a croissant so I ordered it, along with their French toast and an oatmilk cappuccino. Turns out the croissant was already purchased by another patron who was going to have it after their meal. It hadn't been served yet. I received a refund. A couple showed up and sat at the bar as all the tables were full. Then someone else showed up and pointed at the seat I had my coat on saying they were told to sit there as it was the last seat open in the entire place. Packed. The French toast came out in good time but somehow my cappuccino got lost in the mix. It was immediately made and brought out. The French toast is as good as everyone says it is. Light, well filled, great flavor without being too sweet. I was trying to eat it all but had to stop 3/4 of the way as somehow it's filling. The cappuccino is also very good. I made the mistake of wanting to try them out at 11:45 on a holiday. 100% my bad. Considering there are only 3 people working the entire establishment, they did a great job. The food and drink were totally worth it and I will be back (at a less busy time)! *Quick add: I usually don't post while in the establishment but did here. Even with it being busy the owner came by to talk about the review and share a little about their business. They do evening events, private dinners. They also host guest chefs. Their goal is to elevate dishes, which is exactly what they did to the French toast. Based on this one breakfast I would definitely consider them for any function I was hosting in the area.

Overall, I would go back (lots of things on the menu I would love to try) but there are some considerations that might make it lower on my list: --It's a tiny place, like 16 seats --If they're full, you will be uncomfortably close to other diners --The hash browns are something else entirely...it's like someone filled a sheet pan full of potato latke ingredients, pressed it and made it dense, cut it into 1x1x5 inch sticks, and then deep fried it to a burnt brown (wtf!). It tasted like a latke crossed with a hush puppy. Also be aware that it's walk-in only and you pay when you order (so you have no way to express your dissatisfaction with the so-called hash browns). It's street parking in a residential neighborhood but I luckily got a great spot. Obviously this review got a little snarky. So let me repeat that I was happy with my food and think the menu is great. I only deducted one star!
