First, service was excellent. Our disappointments were only over the food. Friendly, inviting, and clean atmosphere. Unfortunately the food was not satisfying. I'm sure breakfast here is fine but our dinner plates were left unfinished and we did not ask for to-go boxes. Though I think the owners have done a fabulous job with the renovation, I think the Blue Bird is just okay as far as diners go in the area. Some of the items seem overpriced to me. And there are some diner staples that just aren't offered here. I came in on a weekday for solo lunch. I had a turkey club, no bacon. It was a fine club, I took half home because there was so much turkey on it. It's clean, the servers are polite and it's in a convenient location. We came here based on the rating and we were severely disappointed. The restaurant looks new and was clean, and our server was pleasant, but she didn't know what muffins they had without asking. The blueberry muffin was cold even though it was grilled. The bagel sandwich was completely opposite of what he ordered, then the cook didn't know what a folded egg was. The sausage gravy was not homemade, despite being advertised as such, and the biscuit was dry, obviously out of a package. The potatoes, though crisp, were bland. read more

This diner has been such a huge anticipation for all the locals of Pennsville. I arrived on a Saturday evening with a party of 6. I can't recall who our server was, but she was an older woman who was somewhat friendly. The food, in my opinion, was pretty typical of South Jersey diner food. My husband gets chicken parm wherever he goes, and I will say that it was huge at this place! Portions are generous. If I could make one suggestion - it would be to add a changing table in the restrooms. I was disappointed that I couldn't even change my baby's diaper. I will come back to try more of the menu, and hope my daughter doesn't poop while we're here! read more

Upon entering we were assaulted by loud hip hop or rap music. Thankfully we were seated away from it or maybe it was turned off. We were seated and asked what we wanted to drink right away. I noticed one good thing--the place was clean, but it's also newly renovated so it should have been. It took an awful long while to get water. Which tasted like chlorine so we traded it in for sodas, which also tasted like chlorine so got bottled water. We ordered cold sandwhiches with fries and fried pickles. It took an inordinate amount of time to receive or so-so food. The fries were good, the chicken salad sandwhiches were nothing better than you could throw together at home. The fried pickles were not good. Our waitress did not introduce herself, no name tag, she was not very friendly or outgoing or helpful in any way. It was also too hot in the diner, so warm it took my appetite away even more than the slow service and awful drinks. We were given the managers choice of a slice of cake to share as an apology for our problems. We took it to go because it was TOO WARM in there! Didn't like the cake. I'm not one to complain if things aren't perfect and understand crowds can slow things down...but there was no crowd. Others seated after us had their food before us and left before we were even done eating! This place left a bad taste in our mouth, figuratively and literally. Very disappointed I can't add this one to our list of go-to places to eat. read more

While driving home on a day trip to Washington DC my wife and I decided we wanted to sit down and have dinner,we had stopped at the Wawa in Pennsville NJ for gas after crossing the Delaware bridge and asked if there was a local restaurant or diner that we could eat at. The gas attendant told us about the Blue Bird Diner less than a mile down the road. We were greeted by the owners wife and seated promptly. The place was very clean and staff extremely attentive. I ordered a burger and onion rings that came with the freshest Cole slaw and pickle that I really missed from my days of the Brooklyn NY diners. The burger was delicious and so large I had to cut it in half. My wife asked for a wedge salad which I don't believe was on the menu and the owner came out from the kitchen and said he would make it for her. The salad was fresh and plentiful and was served with fresh Taziki sauce that my wife requested. We finished our meal with a George's cherry topped Cheese cake and chocolate blackout cake both which were really good and the reason being is they are baked fresh by the in house baker. The prices to me were more then reasonable and the food and dessert great. This our new place to eat every time we venture down the turnpike. My wife and I highly recommend this diner!!! read more

The place was packed with people and we still received our food in a normal amount of time. My husband I ordered omelets and they were fine. The best part was the chocolate covered strawberries. We visited the first day, so it was hustling and bustling, and the staff was getting into the groove of how to run the place. The wait was a bit longer than anticipated, but that's expected on day 1! The food was great, I got the Blue Bird omelette and my wife got the western. Ample serving size, and good flavor. The ambiance is 10/10, it's a refined American diner, with both modern decor mixed with some 60s/70s vibes! Recently renovated, clean and pleasant. We enjoy going here. Blueberry pancakes were very good: large, fluffy, lots of fresh blueberries. Omelette had a generous amount of meat, cheese and vegetables but was a bit flat. Homefries were disappointing, but overall a nice breakfast. read more

After a 15 minute wait to be greeted I ordered Eggs Benedict with scrapple on the side. Meal came out with the scrapple in place of the Canadian bacon. When the waitress was asked about it the kitchen was blamed with no apology. She came back to ask if we needed anything which I then responded "just the bill" minutes later I was given a glass of milk and no bill. Amazing food and amazing service! This is a local hometown diner about 1.5 miles off the last exit of the NJ turnpike. It is family run and the food is made to order. They serve breakfast all day and I would say their specialty is Greek food but, they have a wide variety of offerings and specials. I highly recommend this restaurant! read more
