We stayed here during our road trip and it turned out to be a convenient and comfortable stop overall. One of the best parts is the location -- only about 30 minutes from Mount Rushmore, which made it easy to explore the area without a long drive. The hotel had a few nice touches we appreciated, especially the outdoor patio and the clean-looking pool and jacuzzi area. Breakfast was decent as well and worked perfectly before heading back on the road. The biggest downside is that some parts of the property feel dated. The carpet in the hallways and elevator areas is pretty worn out and could really use replacing because it affects the overall impression of the hotel. We also had an issue with the refrigerator in room 308 constantly making noise through the night, which wasn't ideal for sleeping. Still, the room itself was comfortable enough, and considering the location and price, it's a solid option for a short stay -- just with a few overdue updates needed. read more

Just on the outskirts of town, an easy short drive into downtown where there are many restaurants and shops. Relatively large hotel, with a good size pool although there seems to be a lot of kids all the time so not possible to swim. Room is a good size with either view of the road in front or trees in back. We had a room with 2 queens. Clean, comfy bed and good bedding and pillows. There is a fridge and microwave, although no real cups to use in it unless you bring your own. Bathroom is quite spacious with shower over tub. Hot water takes a while to flow but once it comes it's a good strong shower. Room also had a table and two regular chairs. Wi-Fi a bit weak. Relatively large hotel, breakfast room quite big but can get crowded around 8. Included breakfast with Eggs and bacon, oatmeal, yogurt, apples and bananas, basic and average as expected for this class of accommodation. Compare to other places this one has a lot more children maybe due to the area attractions. read more

Stayed at this Comfort Inn and Suites in Custer SD while visiting Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse Folks. Very good location indeed with interesting sites and sounds. Yes, woke up one morning to see deer running thru the parking lot and you see Dino from the Flintstones across the street on your way out!!! Now the room was good and the service too. Only problem we encountered was day two Coffee Machine was down and they didn't have backup machine so needless to say NO COFFEE!!! In the middle of a road trip out west my family stayed at night at the Comfort Inn & Suites in Custer, SD. About 10 minutes from Mount Rushmore, 15 minutes from Keystone, and with The Flinstones Bedrock City is right across the street - it's a pretty great locale. Highlights for me included: * Pool area adult swim time 10pm - 12am. 24 oz gas station beer cans with my sister-in-law in the hot tub. In SD they call them "silos" * Continental breakfast. Belgian waffle machines! What a tasty way to start the day. * Very nice and helpful customer service - they even ordered a pizza for us. * Comfy bed with lots of little square pillows. * Free wi-fi * Deer in the front yard. (see photo) Low-lights: * Styrofoam coffee cups. In fact all the cups were styrofoam, even for juice. Get it together SD! Our family of seven (4 generations) from Texas stayed at the Comfort Suites in Custer while we were vacationing and visiting sites in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The rooms were very clean, beds comfortable and the bath towels were nice and thick! The breakfast area was a basic hotel breakfast. There was a waffle maker with 2 types of batter. The coffee was good. I was very impressed when we got back to our room after the 1st night and our room had been cleaned! I was mad at myself for forgetting to tell the front desk we wanted housekeeping service that morning when we left for the day, so that was a very nice surprise!! Booked a room online for 1 night simple and easy with no hidden fees. The hotel is a bit dated but well maintained. Our room was very spacious, king size bed with a separate seating area with a couch and a 2 person dining table, microwave and refrigerator - I think our bathroom was even stocked with 6 bath towels. The staff was very friendly, when we were checking in my boyfriend asked gentleman about dining locations and recommendations. We were given a few specific places that would be good for dinner, we were also told to call ahead at the restaurants because some close early on Tuesdays, which was pretty helpful. I can't believe I'm the first person to review this hotel and not mention the rock hard mattresses. If you like a VERY firm mattress this is the place for you! I literally took all of the extra pillows off the other bed and tried to sleep on top of them. It didn't work. I travel for work and have never experienced anything like that! Miserable. read more

This is a wonderful, CLEAN, professional hotel. The rooms are recently renovated and incredibly well kept. Bathrooms are stocked with ample towels and also very clean. Fresh baked cookies upon arrival just past the check in desk. Front desk associate was nothing but pleasant and respectful. Upon entering Custer with our GPS set to the address that is listed basically everywhere on the internet, I marveled at the fact that my fiancee and I, both relatively intelligent, college-educated adults, could somehow drive by a Comfort Inn and Suites four times without seeing it. Then we realized that it's not actually at this address. I don't know if it ever was, but be sure you drive to 339 Mt Rushmore Rd, not 301 W. Once we settled in, we found it to be a comfortable place to rest our heads. The pillows, usually a source of discomfort, were actually quite nice, aside from the fact that they were kind of tiny. The room was air conditioned when we entered, which was great because we didn't have to wait for it to cool down. We didn't see the pool, but it's open later than most hotel pools. The breakfast is the same as any other hotel continental breakfast, but wonder of all wonders they had two (2) waffle machines! That means the usual 30 minute wait for a waffle was eliminated. Fruit selection was only apples and some green oranges, which was pretty weak. The location is really convenient. It's right outside of Custer, and about 10 minutes to Crazy Horse and the rest of the Black Hills action. And the price was fair for the area and the time of year. read more

Great place. It was very recently renovated, A step above most of the other Comfort Inns. Joyce, the general manager, was wonderful, professional and very helpful. The beds were great and I had a great night's sleep. Breakfast was the standard Comfort Inn offering but the sausage and eggs were well prepared. It was a pretty nice place with friendly staff and a clean room. The continental breakfast was pretty good too. However, when we were getting ready to leave someone knocked on the door and tried to let themselves in - luckily we had the door latched so they were unsuccessful. But his means either housekeeping was trying to come in before we checked out (it was only 10:00 am) or the guest keys work in multiple doors. Either way it was kind of a disappointment. read more

Old hotel, well maintained but dated. Staff is friendly and accommodating. Amenities (pool, hot tub and exercise room) are in good shape. The A/C in my room barely worked but it was fairly quiet. Breakfast is low quality and mostly carbs. Fresh items consist of a few apples and oranges in a basket. Close (within 1/2 mile) of down town area. Some very nice restaurants in town. read more

Our room was next the hotel kitchen for morning breakfast. It had an adjoining door to that area for some strange reason and no lock in the room. I raised my safety concerns and was dismissed several times. Finally the manager takes me to the adjoining area. After reviewing the door, I was correct someone could enter my room (remember no lock in the room). Management seemed very dismissive at first. After it was clear, I was given another room. Horrible service. If you book through a 3rd party like hotels.com, they treat you horribly. We didn't get room service and were gone for 11 hours (sight seeing) and we returned to a room just as we left it. We didn't have any towels or toilet paper. No one entered our room nor emptied our trash or anything. When we inquired about daily room service and the need for clean towels we were told we "must have put a do not disturb sign on our door!" Wrong...we didn't. I wouldn't recommend you staying here unless you want to do your own garbage removal, wash your own towels and get zero customer service. Worst comfort inn we have ever stayed in and we travel a lot. There are many options down the street; recommend you go to one of them. read more

Was in Custer looking for a place to stay after visiting Mount Rushmore. Was hesitant to stay here because there were just a few reviews. Glad we did!! Check in was great! The lady who checked us in got us in a room we requested and made sure it was clean. She told us of restaurants in the area and which ones would give us a discount because we stayed at the hotel. She told us about a magic show across the street that was happening later that evening and we could get discount tickets and free popcorn if we purchased the tickets at the hotel, which we did. Found one of the discounted restaurants. Great food! Went to the magic show, it was great! Our children had a blast! The pool was clean! Great fitness room! Our room smelled so clean and fresh! Stayed here 3 nights. Since we requested a "top floor/quiet room" we did have to wait about 30 mins before the room was ready (we were a little early for checking in). While waiting, it seems like the front desk should have TWO people on duty to handle check-in, especially with some groups arriving for a wedding, I noticed they got pretty busy (and slow as a result). Husband and I were road tripping and stayed here 1 night. There were not a lot of staff there to assist, but they were friendly and helpful when needed. Our room included a microwave and mini fridge, which was a pleasant surprise, as we booked the reservation through a third party website. The room was clean, extremely comfortable, and the beds were wonderful! This location was close to Mt. Rushmore and about a 20 minute drive to Jewel Cave. We were tent camping at Custer/Mount Rushmore KOA when the weather turned Stormy. The lightening was intense, so we jumped in the car and headed into town. The Holiday Inn (of which I am a member) wanted to charge full rate even though it was 1:30am, so we opted to check next door at Comfort Inn. Clerk was so nice, gave a discounted rate. The free hot breakfast was good. The room was really clean, huge king size bed was comfy, and there was good water pressure for nice hot shower. Definitely would stay again. read more

My mom, my two young sons, and I had reserved a room for September 12th - 17th, 2011, and after staying at several hotels on our trip out to South Dakota, and having to pack, unpack, unload and reload our luggage, were very happy to check into our little home away from home for the week. Upon checking into the hotel on September 12, 2011, the woman who checked us in said that there was a note that I had requested fresh bedding, and that all of the linens had been changed. Happy with the friendly welcome, we unloaded our luggage from our vehicle, and "move in" to our room. The room was clean and nicely decorated, and the pool area seemed nice. We got up early the next morning to get ready and have breakfast before heading to Hill City for our 10am reservations on the 1880 Train. As I was getting ready, my mom knocked on the bathroom door, and told me that I wouldn't believe what she'd just found in her bed as she was making it. Very upset, she laid a yellow fingernail on the bathroom counter that appeared to have come from an elderly person! She was sick to her stomach to think that she'd slept in a bed with bedding with a dirty fingernail in it that didn't belong to her, me or my sons! While I finished getting ready, she put the fingernail in a tissue and went to the front desk. Fifteen to twenty minutes later, she came back to the room extremely upset wanting me to go back to the front desk with her because the lady she spoke to didn't believe that she'd actually found a fingernail in her bed! We went back to the front desk where we spoke to the same lady my mom had spoken to a few minutes earlier, with the initials CMB who claimed to be the manager. I have NEVER been treated so rudely and with such crassness in my life, let alone by someone claiming to be the manager of a large hotel in a popular vacation destination! We were careful to very quietly and nicely explain what had happened, careful to keep our voices down and to stop discussing our problem when other hotel guest came to the desk. She stood there with her arms crossed the entire time not responding to us with more than a nod of her head from time to time until she had the audacity to tell us that not only did she NOT believe that we had found a fingernail in one of the beds, but then insinuating that we had PLANTED the fingernail there in order to get a free night's stay! How dare she! My mom and I are good, honest, Christian women who had both saved up and planned for this vacation for MONTHS! Neither of us like to complain and avoid confrontation at all costs, but we had EVER right to bring this to the hotel's attention! Silly as it felt at the time, my mom and I both held out or hands for her to see that neither of us had a broken nail nor did the yellowed fingernail look anything like ours. My mom asked her several times how the hotel intended to make things right, to which CMB responded that although she was the manager, she had personally changed the bedding herself the previous day, and that the hotel wasn't going to fall for our little scam! When I told her that we weren't saying that the bedding hadn't been changed, and that perhaps the housekeeper had broken a nail while changing the sheets or that maybe the nail got snagged to the sheets during laundering, she told me that none of that was possible, and then once again insinuated that WE put the fingernail there to get a free night. My mom was crying by this time, and I was getting very angry not only at the accusations this lady was making and that my mom was upset, but by the complete and utter disrespectful and rude way that she was addressing us and handling this matter. When I asked her if there was another manager on duty, she just stared at me and wouldn't reply. I told her that what it came down to was that it WASN'T our fingernail that we found in the hotel's bed, and that was a problem, to which she replied, and I quote, "If you're finished now, I have things to do." I'd had it by this time, and announced that although we'd planned to stay for the next 4 nights, we'd be checking out immediately, and I'd be contacting corporate headquarters to tell them what had happened and how she was treating us. Her response, "That's fine." No apology, no asking if there was anything she could do to make us stay, nothing! Not ONCE during either my or my mom's conversation with this lady did she make ANY sort of an apology or ANY attempt to resolve the issue! Ridiculous! read more
