This was our first time staying at this Holiday Inn and we will be back. The people very friendly just loved La Vida she was so nice. That's why we go back to places is because of the people. The hotel was clean and the view were great. We sat on the balcony and watched the cars go by and we also seen a lot of deers. The back patio is very nice with a waterfall coming down and plenty of seating and tables. Power for Electric cars. Indoor pool and hot tub. This is a great location if you are going to Custer Park and spend the day with the buffaloes and donkeys or burrows. Close to Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road. Both of these are a must but drive safe. Very close to downtown Custer we're you can shop-eat and just relax. I highly recommend this Holiday Inn and we will be back. read more

For a Holiday Inn Express, it's better than average. You don't expect a modest chain hotel to be a mountain lodge, but the common room with high ceilings and big windows looking out to the rocky hillside brought in a nice touch of one. The room was large and comfortable, everything well maintained and intuitive. The indoor swimming pool and hot tub were popular with families: not the place for a relaxing soak, but good if you have kids. Breakfast was mostly as expected, though things don't get restocked in the last hour. read more

Holiday Inn Express is usually a reliable choice, and the Custer location did not disappoint. We had a two bedroom unit with one bathroom. The kind, queen and sofa beds were all comfortable. We were particularly impressed that we had some housekeeping in a post-COVID world. Clean towels are the best! They only made one of the three beds, but it was so nice to have a clean bathroom for six people. I would definitely recommend it. Friendly staff and a plentiful breakfast for the WIN! read more

We spent four nights in Custer and stayed here. Our room was pretty quiet most of the time. We swam in the pool and that was relaxing. The morning breakfast was well stocked and if something was out the staff refilled quickly. They are not cleaning rooms daily unless pre asked. The front desk has all supplies so all you need to do is stop by. We enjoyed our stay. read more

Really struggled between a 3 or 5 star, so settled for the middle. Straying from my typical review style, just doing bullet points on this one. We reserved a 2 bedroom, 2 king room. With that we had a standard king room with an adjoining room and a king bed. There was a balcony with two chairs and a table. The kitchenette offered a mini fridge, microwave, and sink. Perks- *Free continental breakfast (muffins, toast, cinnamon rolls, cereal, eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, coffee, tea, milk, juice) *indoor pool *convenient location *clean *quiet *balcony (not all rooms have one) Downers- *free WiFi didn't work (may not necessarily be a bad thing, but made 2 grumpy teenagers even grumpier). To be fair, it connected, but lost signal every minute and had to reload. Perhaps it was because we were on the end of the hotel. *decor was just "meh". Don't get me wrong, rooms were clean, just felt ick in there. read more

Came here about a month ago for Thanksgiving and the hot tub was green then but now it's even worse

Stuck in town an extra few days because of a hurricane in our home town, the staff worked with us to get us a room. Rooms were clean and I loved the black out curtains in the room. Breakfast was always warm with a great variety. Staff were quick to restock food and drinks and always very nice. 10/10 would return read more

Of any Holiday Inn we've ever stayed at (admittedly, not many), this was a great property! The room was very clean and even though we hung up our towel to try to conserve, they changed them every day. The breakfast was really quite amazing...there were many choices and even a pancake machine which I did not use, but found fascinating. Like a conveyor belt! The hotel itself was nicely appointed and had a large breakfast area with a fireplace. Our room faced the back of the property and had a beautiful view...very private. We slept with both the window and the blinds open. It got into the high 40s at night and our room was kept quite cool with no need for the AC. The bed linens were immaculate. The bathroom shower head could have used replacing, but other than that it was a great stay for a HIE. The staff were very accommodating and it was centrally located between Jewel Cave and Wind Cave. 1 out of 2 mornings we had no hot water. We tried twice over 2 hours. There is no excuse for a modern hotel not to have hot water. The employees were very nice. This 1 star review is not for the hotel itself, but the service provided. I have been an IHG member for many years and upon arrival the gentleman who checked me in could not find me in the system for IHG after giving him my name, phone number and email address. After about 5-10 minutes of him trying and me being tired from the drive with others waiting behind me, I said forget it I'll do this in the morning. After waking up and having a very sub-par breakfast compared to all other holiday inn breakfasts I've had, I went to the front desk and asked the young lady at the front desk about adding me to IHG so I could get my points and hopefully my discount. She then told me she couldn't do it because she was new and took my information down and said she would have the person coming in take care of it. Well, that never got done and when called back said there was nothing she could do. She gave me the customer service number for IHG, I called, and they too told me there is nothing they could do. This will likely cause me to stay at this or and IHG related hotel due to their poor service and lack of care for a long time member and customer. The hotel room was a solid 3 stars, average and what you would expect aside from being very over priced. read more

Quite simply one of the nicest "budget" hotels i've ever stayed in. Not a lot of choices on hotels in the area but this fairly new spot was definitely a good choice. Room was nicely appointed with granite bath and very clean. Where this place went to the top was in its common areas. The free breakfast was served in a huge "great room" complete with mammoth fireplace. In addition there was a patio with a waterfall running down the hill and a firepit to sit around. Considering that most of Custer shuts down around 8pm, this was the best place in town to enjoy some "nightlife". Met some interesting travelers from around the country sitting by the fire and doing some reading. And of course, the Holiday Inn's complimentary breakfast is a nice savings of both time and money. read more

If there is every a poster child for Hotels this would be it! This place is exceptional! This place is very nice as everything in it was immaculate and clean. They used top notch building materials as everything from the shower to the carpet is superior. Everything is new and well maintained. The surroundings are beautiful as it has a waterfall in the back. Our room looked out to the waterfall and it was soothing to put you to sleep. There is a great room and waiting area that is very large and with ample seating. It also has a workout room and pool which we did not use. There are not many places to eat out here, so I suggest that you eat in a different town. The only place that was decent was the Purple Pie Place. They have real home cooked food and great Pies for dessert. Great for lunch! A few days prior, we had to cancel one of the days we were going to stay there and the Holiday Inn Express foreign call center was very rude and referred us to the Hotel. I called the Hotel and the person was accommodating and canceled our other day because we had another day already reserved. If you are going to view Custer State Park, this is idea because it is located to many scenic areas of the park like the Needles Hwy and Sylvan Lake. We made the mistake of staying near Keystone and driving all the way to the park the first couple days when in fact we should have done the reverse. This place would be very nice to travel to in the Winter as well. We would definitely stay here again given the chance! read more

This hotel is in a nice location and placed away from the main road. The lobby and room were very nice with plenty of room. Everything worked, the bed was awesome. The staff was very pleasant. However, we havent experienced such a bad breakfast ever. They should either fix it or get rid of it. Cheese omlette were frozen and made from powdered eggs and tasteless cheese. Bacon was as thin as copy paper. Hard boiled eggs sat in a watery container.. yuck all around unless you have lots of kids who will eat anything as the good reviews of breakfast attest to. WiFi was painfully slow. Too bad as the rest of the experience was great. read more

We stopped in Custer, SD for the night on our way to Kansas City, MO. The front desk staff were very warm and friendly. Actually, they were the friendliest we have met on our long road trip from WA to MO and back! The rooms were spotless and lovely. Comfortable beds and reliable wifi. Parking was easy. We even forgot to re-park the car after unloading our luggage, so it sat under the breezeway for several hours before we moved it. Nobody gave us any trouble and the staff were even very kind about it! Would stay here again in the future. Highly recommend this hotel! read more

Clean, lobby and eating area are tastefully decorated. Complimentary breakfast had much variety. Coffee was delicious! The staff were friendly and courteous. My only negative is the number of kids running around. I know it's a family hotel with an amusement park (?) across the street, but it was still a bit annoying. Not as good as the best Western in Lusk, WY! Rooms were comfortable enough. Heating and air is a wall unit that blows air during the night that you can hear. Breakfast was so-so. Ate on Styrofoam plates using plastic utensils. When I went for instant oatmeal with hot water the thermos container with the hot water wasn't even hot. When I mentioned it to one of the attendants she just pointed down the counter towards the coffee pots where there was hot water. Some service! Pre made omelettes. When you take them out of the bin they're all soggy on the bottom. Turkey sausage was like shoe leather! Definitely stay someplace else while you're in Custer South Dakota. read more

We stayed for two weeks. Upon entering the room, the toilet handle was broken. The facility overall was not very clean. There were two days where our room was not cleaned or beds made. There were 2 or 3 people working the breakfast and they were always out of food and coffee. Issues at check in- our room was prepaid and they said it wasn't and wanted my credit card again. The beds were hard and not comfortable. I would not recommend this facility! Worst Holiday Inn Express we have ever stayed in. There are other hotels nearby that are better. read more

A little pricey but worth it. This is a relatively new hotel (two or three years old). We stayed two nights and were extremely satisfied with everything. The hotel is in a nice location on the edge of town, but Custer's a pretty small town so it's still convenient to get to the town center. The room was very nice with some upscale features such as a granite tub surround, nice artwork, etc. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The area where breakfast is served has a large fireplace and doors that lead out to a nice patio, which is set into a hill with a small waterfall. Great spot for a quiet cup of coffee. Our kids loved the pool and hot tub, although a bit heavy on the chlorine. With many small motels in Custer advertising rooms for $49/night, the HI Express comes in at almost triple the price. However, we felt it was a good value given the quality of our stay. read more

Had the best stay at this hotel. The staff was incredible all the way around. Rooms were clean, hotel was beautifully kept. Breakfast was great and fresh and the setting was beautiful. Stayed here recently for several days. It's a very clean hotel which is a top priority. Indoor pool was refreshing after days of being out an about. The biggest selling point was the free breakfast which was welcomed for our family of 5. The breakfast is one of the only I know of that actually serves a protein. We had two days where bacon was served. Thin crisp bacon was cooked correctly and was very good. There was usually some available despite the crowds. The sausage links and sausage patties were just okay. I passed on the eggs which my wife said were not really that good. The cost of this hotel at that price rivals a recent stay we had in Manhattan, but our room again was nice and clean, felt very new, and had plenty of room for our family. We had a suite on the third floor without a balcony. (Two queens and a sofa rollout). Plenty of sleeping room for the family. I also happen to be an expert on pillows and they provide two different types. One soft and one hard. Both were nice pillows, but I found myself preferring the soft as did one of my sons. Could probably be given 5 stars, but the price point seems a bit steep. read more

Very nice staff, clean and good size room a bit expensive but your only here a night or 2 it's worth it. the staff is friendly and polite. we were able to get to crazy horse in 15 minutes and Mt. Rushmore in 30 minutes. You can sleep with the window open and the people of custard are rock solid people who care about your needs. read more

We stayed here when we passed through Custer on our way to the Badlands. Everyone at the front counter was super nice. Hotel was very nice. New and clean. Rooms were great. Comfy beds and a mini fridge. Didn't check out the pool area. They had laundry, which was huge, as my husband and I had been camping for a week before that..... Continental breakfast was pretty good. Nothing fancy, but they did have eggs and bacon. All the obligatory toast, muffins, cereal, and yogurt too. The only thing that I couldn't get over was that it was $150 for the night. I mean, we're in South Dakota people. I know it's a tourist spot..... but still, we paid $150 for 12 hours at the hotel.... I was hoping to get a deal since we got there later in the night and also on our honeymoon... but alas, no deal was given... I still appreciated the service and the comfort. read more

This is a very nice and clean hotel. The free breakfast was delicious, and the eating area was spacious and nicely decorated. The room was very clean, and the bathroom had just the right space. The beds were extremely comfy, and the towels and sheets looked and smelled brand new. The tv had nice HD quality. The wifi worked great. The staff was friendly and helpful and cleaned up the room very well. The pool was ok, a bit small, but the hot tub made up for it. Overall, an excellent hotel, so if you are in the Custer area, DEFINITELY stay here. read more

Me and Dad hit up a Holiday Inn Express in 5 different states during our road trip across the midwest. Each one had its pluses and minuses, but the Custer location was definitely our favorite! First off, it's impeccably clean with super friendly, attentive staff and a beautiful location at the foot of some South Dakota hills with a small waterfall that sits next to a patio. The rooms are spacious and well-decorated. No musty hotel room smell. They have a free breakfast buffet n the mornings which wasn't something I get too excited by. I just got a banana, some yogurt, and an orange juice. BUT, I saw other people loading their plates sky high with biscuits, sausages, bacon, and pancakes. The best thing about the hotel is its proximity to the loop that goes around the nearby national parks, Crazy Horse, and Mount Rushmore. Everything was very accessible! read more

Such a great experience here! We originally booked across the street at Best Western which was a total disaster (lost our reservation ect) so we called Holiday Inn from the lobby at BW and their rates were a little more but very reasonable. We got into Holiday Inn annoyed with our experience across the street and they were so cheerful and helpful that it changed our attitudes entirely. The guy (Axel) went above and beyond in his customer service looking up our rewards balance and telling us how to get our 30k points redeemed. Great clean room, nice bedding and decent shower. In the morning we walked by the desk multiple times and were greeted with friendly good mornings. Great free breakfast options for travelers. overall good experience! read more

Such a beautiful hotel a few minutes away from Mt Rushmore. The rooms were clean and you can tell they really go out of their way to make sure your stay is comfortable. They serve free breakfast and the food isn't bad at all. We love that it's not too far from everything and we can't wait to come back on our next road trip. read more

It was a good location, but we had reserved balcony rooms in September, and when we got there, we only had one balcony that faced the street and you weren't able to sit on it because of the exhaust fumes. read more

Very good "budget" hotel. The breakfast in the morning is nice, the staff was polite and helpful. The rooms are very basic, but clean. The location is great for visiting Mount Rushmore and many many more sites in the area. Definitely not a fancy spot, but a nice clean hotel in a good location. read more

The hotel staff was very friendly. We really enjoyed our stay. The family suites are very spacious. The free breakfasts had lots of choices. I have a son with food allergies and was so surprised they had Gluten free Udi's blueberry muffins and bagels.
