The breakfast buffet is mediocre in variety. I asked for an egg white omelette which was extremely greasy and had yolks. They charged me $4.49 for my coffee on day 1, $3.50 on day 2 and $1.53 for day 3. For-the-exact-same-coffee. I think it was a little nuts. I called the front desk to ask about this strange coffee pricing anomaly and they didn't seem to get it.

Unfortunately this was a very quick trip in and out to take one of our dogs to the local Ontario Veterinary College for an MRI. I hope to return sometime for a longer stay to enjoy the hotel's amenities and relaxing atmosphere. We had a room with two queen beds that was larger than the typical hotel room. There was a small refrigerator and a very long desk. There was a cordless phone and an alarm clock that not only showed you the time on the front but also displayed the time on each side so you could see it as you were lying in bed. We were surprised to find a nice note from the manager welcoming us as a Marriott Rewards member. We were using a certificate for 1 night's free stay and as a thank you for choosing their hotel we had a delicious plate of fresh berries and exquisite chocolate as a welcoming gift. The bathroom area was separated by a pocket door so that the toilet and the shower tub combination are separate from the sink and two very large mirrors which were great for putting on makeup and having counter space for your Essentials. I don't think the hotel was very full on a Sunday night, I found the rooms to be very quiet and relaxing. All of the staff welcomed our three dogs and seemed very happy to have them there even sharing photos with us of their own dogs. Why not 5 stars vs. 4? Sorry, I'm spoiled by hotels that always have coffee/tea available in the lobby and complimentary breakfast. I'm not ready to pay $15.95 for a buffet breakfast. The hotel's location is also very convenient as it is literally adjacent to the University of Guelph campus, 5 minutes to the Ontario Veterinary College, in less than 10 minutes to the downtown retail/restaurant area.

At least 2 or 3 staff members wished me a happy birthday ( not just the main waiter). Small things like that help reinforce the importance of hospitality in service settings. I had a medical emergency at the 48 hour cancellation window and was in the ED (with my hospital band still and records in hand so I could offer proof). I let her know I am in town to convene sport because the regular Guelph local convenor is out of province to get to his ailing brother. My doctors wanted me close to home and were assessing if heading out of town was ok. In the meantime I tried to call to speak to someone last night (April 9th) three times with no success. It just kept ringing and ringing. I called first thing this morning and spoke to "Debbie" who is the "General Manager" (I know because I tried to escalate at property). I explained my situation and given my status - I tend to try to stay at Marriott properties and she insisted on not allowing me to cancel, a voucher for another stay (I am not in Guelph often so explained I was covering for another convenor only). When I asked for a manager and learned (in the rudest way possible) she was I told her that I would take care of it "another way". I called over to Marriott who, given my years of stays and status was happy to do so. In the meantime, while we were chatting Debbie - and I have read the past reviews and the glowing service reports so they have clearly not had the full management experience - put the charge through on my AMEX. I called back - and asked "Debbie did you put a charge through on my card"? To which she replied - yes we put through all "no shows". I then asked how am I a "no show"? to which she said "you told me you weren't coming you weren't coming". I never said that I wasn't coming - I said I was told not to come and was hoping to cancel. It is important to note I am not officially a "no show" until after midnight - I can't even check in until 3 or 4 today!!! The charge was illegal!!! DO NOT LET THEM CHARGE YOUR CARD UNAURTHORIZED. I then explained that as a courtesy due to my loyalty the reservation was cancelled and she SCREAMED "I don't care - I will just put it back on" and then HUNG UP ON ME! I have since called both my credit card company as it was illegal for her to put the charge through as a "no show" as I have until midnight to "show up"! - so not cool. I called Marriott customer service back and by the grace of god got the same customer service rep Mary back. She was as shocked as I was as to their property's "General Manager". We both agreed she has no business being in customer service and perhaps this is a franchise in which case - she has no business being an owner. While the other staff may be lovely - Debbie - you are a horrible GM and you need to get retrained (which honestly I am unsure that attitude can changed as its likely baked in) or let go.....Good luck to this location with that at the helm

The house is impeccably decorated, with tons of books to read and spaces to sit outside and enjoy the gardens. Refrigerators for personal use. The most wonderful thing is that a big thermos of coffee is brought up into hallway in early morning for self serve. How great is that? No getting dressed! Outstanding ample breakfast each day featuring top notch very fresh and innovative breakfast items. A station with granola, fresh breads, croissants, biscuits and homemade jams starts one off. Kevin got back to me immediately and replied to my inquiry and we quickly and efficiently arranged everything. My friend and I arrived a bit earlier than we'd initially indicated, but both Kevin and Kim were welcoming and helpful. We were shown to a reasonable sized room on the second floor and all necessary amenities were explained to us. The decor of the place wasn't really my cup of tea, but the room was clean and cozy, so I can put aside my own personal aesthetic. The private bathroom was a decent size and well laid out. The bed was a wee bit smaller than I'd imagined, but it was very comfortable. My favourite part of my stay though hands down had to be my breakfast! Because Kevin and Kim knew we had an early start, they got breakfast going extra early for us. We started with freshly baked croissants, lemon poppy seed cake, and assorted fresh berries. DEELISH! Then we had poached eggs with hollandaise sauce with heirloom tomato on a wonderfully salty rosti. SO SO GOOD!!! The eggs were cooked to perfection and the splash of pesto on the tomato added a perfect kick. I was in heaven. I love coming to Stratford to see the theatre. Next year, I am totally coming back here, but I am going to make sure that I have dinner at the Old Rectory too!
