I lived at Sherwood Village for exactly 1 year and 1 week. I really enjoyed it when I first moved…read morethere as I was more independent. But as my needs increased my dissatisfaction grew. Sherwood Village is only suited to those that are completely self-sufficient. There are not enough caregivers to assist those that need more care. There is 1 caregiver, 1 assistant caregiver and 1 med-tech for each of the 2 floors for the day shift (6-2) and evening shift (2-10). For the night shift (10-6) there is 1 caregiver and 1 med-tech who is supposed to assist the caregiver with calls on the second floor. But the overnight caregiver is responsible for the entire 1st floor alone in addition to the 2nd floor with the assistance of the med-tech. Not so bad you say? Think of it from a sheer numbers perspective. Sherwood village is a very large place with 50-75 people on each of the 2 floors. Now think about the ratio of help to people 2:50-75. The only way this will work is if everyone is completely independent. And if one of the caregivers or assistants are out for some reason then the ratio goes down to 1:50-75. That is not acceptable by any standard. But if you think you are going to become someone who needs more assistance as time goes on save yourself a lot of grief and go someplace else. As my health deteriorated I needed more help. For the most part the staff was very good about helping me. Some were not happy about it but that is understandable given that I was a drain on them so they said. My needs increased to the point where I required assistance to stand from a seated position. I was sometimes limited in other areas if my pain level was higher. I was told by the wellness director Kim Sylvester that I would be better off at another facility where I could receive more attention. That Sherwood was not suited to meet my needs. So as long as you don't think your health will ever deteriorate it might be a pretty good place. It would be a better place if the brother/sister team of Director/Wellness Director Russell Sylvester/Kim Sylvester were able to be in the facility more. They are spread very thin. They are not onsite to witness issues firsthand. And supervisors seem to try to protect their staff. I'm not sure the reasoning behind this. Kim and Russell are at other facilities owned by the company in Tucson and at least one that I know of in Phoenix as well. It has taken their attention away from the issues of the care residents at Sherwood are being given. Not withstanding the staffing levels, the care that residents receive has been compromised, particularly on the weekends. It got to the point where I decided to leave because I did not trust the med-tech on the weekends to give me my meds correctly. On the weekends there was 1 caregiver and 1 med-tech who is supposed to assist the caregiver on each floor. That is a ratio of 1.5:50-75 on the weekends. They have said they are trying to get better but that it is hard to find people who want to work. But it is the same everywhere. Everyone has staffing issues. And another problem I saw was the nepotism. Many of the staff are related to each other. There are 8 sets of related people there that I can quickly recall. That creates a problem when there are issues with one of those people. If a member of staff needs to be let go for issues that may be happening it is difficult when people are related. If one is let go the other might go as well in a show of solidarity. I believe Sherwood Village tolerates poor performance due to their fear of not being able to fill a position or possibly 2 if the relative leaves as well. My bottom line is this. If you are healthy and mobile and never expect to become infirm then accept the risks presented by their staffing problems and go there. But if you feel your health may deteriorate for any reason I recommend you go elsewhere. I think you will be happier in the long run.

The staffing is amazing, there are both medication techs and caregivers focusing on the residents as a team. There are licensed LVN's 7 days a week which is not standard in this industry, so these examples of staffing truly sets the cascades apart from other facilities. Additionally the reception team answers the phone at all hours and are kind and extremely professional as well. As a recent retired RN I know what quality care looks like and the Cascades has given my family the piece of mind we need and the care my mother deserves. Although she was declining, she had a lot of life in her left to enjoy until her body gave out. I placed her at Devon Gables with hopes of good care, and friendly staff. I can honestly say that they exceeded my expectations. Every time I visited someone was caring for her. They never just forgot about her. They got her up every day and interacted with her. She was truly happy. She was always clean and her room was clean and the staff all expressed how much they enjoyed getting to know her. About 20 years ago my husband's grandfather was also there. Things were good then, but even better now. Thank you to all the staff that cared for mom.

We happened upon SDS when we needed to move my Mom to a 24 hour care Memory Unit, but needed an…read moreindependent unit for my Dad. A place that would allow them to be close and feel safe, supported. The property is lovely, and every single staff member I have come into contact with in the last two weeks is gracious, kind and friendly. It is not easy working in the senior retirement community business... I know as I worked in it for roughly 4 years as an ED. It is even more difficult working in a memory care unit, where aging loved ones are not the same selves they once were and need a lot of care. You have to give a level of trust, and rely on strangers to take care of your loved one the way you would. My Mom was here for roughly 2 weeks, with supplemental hospice care from the time she moved in, until the time she passed. The team in the memory care unit was always amazing to us, and my Mom. We were not there 24 hours mind you, but I observed the other residents being cared for and looked after by all the staff. My Mom was pretty much incapacitated and relied heavily on the kind and gentle care of the team here. Besides the Wellness Director Jackie, who was knowledgeable and kind, there is one lady in particular who was a standout to me. It was such a stressful time, I can't even for the life of me remember her name... but she had an eastern European accent. I felt as though she always took great care with my Mom, making sure she was comfortable and looked after... especially when we were not there.

Each time I visit her I found her to be clean, properly dressed and in good spirits. The caregivers are professional, friendly and sincere as they go about their difficult tasks. The residents rooms and common areas are maintained by an outside cleaning service that relieves staff of that duty allowing for full-time patient care.
