I've been going here since before it was here. I'm by no means the oldest customer that they've had but this place has always inspired loyalty in me. Maybe it's because I have an unreasonable distaste for Joe's and have always had a unreasonable distaste for it. Troy is kick ass and is a genuinely nice person. Always willing to share on comics and is excellent at customer service. They've got a good selection and the store is organized in a manner that makes sense. I have been going to Comicopolis since it first opened. I feel like it is my second home! I remember when it was first opening, meeting the owner Troy while he was still just setting up his shop, and he took the time to talk to this kid about comics and let me take a look around and watch. All these years later and we still talk comics! It is great to see how much the store has grown from its location on Water St. to where it is now downtown on Front St. Troy is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet as well as co-owner J.D. Arnold, who is a comic book writer himself and always friendly and engaging. It's such a cozy little shop, not only filled with comics, but movies, games, toys and shirts. The best comic shop ever!!!! It's one of the few things I miss in Santa Cruz. Troy and Johnnie are the coolest comic shop owners (period!) I have converted many Atlanteans into full fledged Comicopolis loyalists, and if you love Comicopolis as much as I do I hope you will do the same. There's actually an okay-ish amount of comic stores in this area, but this is the one I always come to. I've had bad experiences at other shops, either personally having been the victim of staff members' bad attitudes, or overhearing someone being verbally abused... NOT here!!! Troy is our fave, he's always just so pleasant and helpful. He doesn't mind when I do 5 laps around the store and ask him questions. He's held items for me, special ordered some, and even told me about sales they were having that I was unaware of that helped saved me some extra moolah (only to obviously be re-invested here at a future date). I'm actually only recently getting back into comics, so a lot of the time my boyfriend is the one stocking up on the new releases... but I own about 110 board games and they have most of the popular titles here. Sometimes I'll see one I haven't heard of yet and check it out - I even got my first Rick and Morty game here, shweet! You only really save a few bucks buying from places like amazon, so we would rather support local when we can. So this is our Sunday ritual. Get your geek on! read more

What I really like about this place is that I feel completely comfortable going in there. I don't feel like it's a boys club at all. Whenever I go in they say "Hi" to me and remember to tell me if what I am looking for is available. Other than that, they leave me alone,which is what I like. I will ask for help if I need it, but other than that I like to browse. I would feel completely fine buying adult comics from these guys and I will someday dammit as soon as I find my dirty overcoat. read more

Visiting from out of town- this shop was impressive! It was super clean, extremely organized, and had a great selection! Kids and adults comics, games, novelty items and some rare things! I'm from La Quinta, CA near Palm Springs, CA. I came into town for vacation and I was looking for a comic book store. I was amazed how the place look. Everything is organized and clean. Great vibes in the store. I couldn't decide what to buy so I asked for help. Great service and he finally convinced me to buy Saga. Awesome book by the way. Also I purchased Watchmen. These guys are great! They go out of their way to help you find what you need and offer great deals ALL YEAR long. It's an even better deal if you have a "pull box" there. The staff have great taste in books and are happy to talk shop with you when you are in the store. The only draw back is the limited selection of issues in stock. I guess they don't order too much to put on the shelf. (Atlantis is better for that kind of stuff) Great place never the less. It's where most my spare money goes! read more

Comicopolis may be small in size but it has a great selection of comics, graphic novels, trades, art books, games, figures, 'zines, art work, plushies, etc. They are really making the most of their space! Sign up for the subscription service so you don't miss an issue and make sure to like them on Facebook or sign up for their email newsletter so you know what's coming in and when they have events and sales. They do have discounts for UCSC and Cabrillo students and a discount card for non-students like me (fill a card by buying $X amount and save X%) If you don't see something, they can do special orders as well. Troy is great! My girlfriend and I were spending the weekend in Santa Cruz and we stumbled upon this fantastic place. Usually when I go to comic shops I find myself moving from section to section and not finding anything that looks too appealing. I don't know how they do it, but even though most shops I have been to are larger, this one has the best selection I have seen. I don't know if it's because they have such a great focus on books, or because they're so organized (with awesome wooden shelves), or if they only stock the best, but it's just shelf after shelf of books I love and stuff I hadn't seen before and that I really wanted to read. They have a whole shelf dedicated to Neil Gaiman! Troy is super helpful, and genuinely tries to make sure you find what you're looking for and get the best deal you can. Even though I live 6+ hours away, I am going to try to come back as often as I can. read more

The owners of this establishment are extremely friendly! They carry a very large selection of trade paperbacks and a decent selection of softcovers. If you don't see what you are looking for, ask them and they can certainly order it for you. I've ordered a few things and they came in as promised. I've been coming to Comicopolis for 11 years, from when they were at their previous location to the current one on Front St. I still consider this the best comic shop in the entire bay area. John and Troy are awesome and they genuinly care about their customers and inform them on purchases that are great and those that aren't as well. They always make me feel welcome and thats the reason I've been coming for so many years and plan to for the rest of my comic reading life...which will probably be forever. I've been to a lot of comic shops where the staff could really care less If I'm in there and don't know anything about comics when I ask but John and Troy are very genuine, nice guys who always help out their customers in anyway possible. 5 stars!!!!!!!!! read more

I discovered this place on Yelp during my winter vacation from UCSC. At the time I was currently in my hometown, so seeing that it's got a perfect score on yelp and so many people seem to love this place with their knowledgeable and friendly, helpful staff, I was super excited to come back to this place and give it a shot. I really wanted to like this place, trust me, I really did. Sad to say, I was disappointed all three visits. I really don't know why this place has 5 stars here on Yelp. The store is tiny, so the selection sucks, and three times I've been there, seen 2 different works, neither of which knows anything much about Marvel, and I've never EVER been asked for help. The last time I came here was only because I was too far from the other shop and too lazy to walk that far. I was literally the only customer in there for about 15 minutes, browsing through their tiny little store and not a single word was said to me. The story is very tiny so there's no way the employee could've missed me. I almost didn't buy anything solely because of their horrible service, but I wanted this issue of X-Men really bad so I went ahead and bought it anyways, and THAT'S the ONLY time the guy talked to me -____- Like I said, i've been here 3 times, and in those 3 visits, I bought at least one thing. 2 of the 3 times I've been there, I was wearing a UC Santa Cruz hoodie. After my 3rd visit there, I found out that UC students get 10% off. Anybody see the problem here? A good worker would see that his customer is wearing a ucsc hoodie, implying he's a student at the uc of course, and then ask whether or not he has his id to show for a discount, but nooooooo this guy just went ahead and carried out the transaction as fast as he could so I wouldn't see the dinky little sign they have about the 10% off. Too bad I didn't know about it until after my 3rd and final visit. I could've saved myself like 4-5 bucks, enough for a comic book at the other comic book store. I wish the bad news would stop here, but it goes on. This place is supposed to be open at like 10 or something right? So I called at 10:40 and asked for a stock check on an issue I've been looking for and the guy tells me he's unable to locate the book because their computer system hasnt' been turned on yet because they just got in about 40 minutes ago and to call back in 30 minutes because that's how long it takes. Really? they just got in about 40 minutes ago? Last I remember, if your store opens at 10 o clock, you better be ready by 10 o clock. That doesn't mean you should show up at 10 o clock, that means you open at 10 and show up around 9, especially if it takes the system 30 minutes to turn on. This guy said he showed up at 10, I called at 10:40, and that means their system had 40 minutes to turn on, but it still wasn't on. And wtf?! Even if it wasn't on, I was looking for one new issue that came out about 5 days ago! And the store is TINY! Try walking your ass to the X-Men comic books and flip through a few books ya?! Complete BS! Never coming back here again. They just lost a potentially great customer! I'm currently reading about 6 or so comic books and if their service didn't suck, I would've subscribed through their stores and spend anywhere from 15-30 bucks a week there for the rest of my 3 years here. Bottom line, look elsewhere for a decent comic book store. read more

This is a great comic store. I could hang out here for hours. Don't let its lack of square footage deceive you. If there's a book or a title I can't find, Troy can get it. He recommends great material, and really knows what's out there. I feel totally comfortable bringing my 10-year-old nephew with me. Was visiting my brother from NY and decided to check this place out. Bought a $5 grab bag and it had 10 issues of first print New Teen Titans! Great selection, with some cool back issues and very friendly service. Will definitely stop by my next time on the west coast! Check 'em out! read more
