My wife and I had a lovely visit to Comida this past weekend. I informed the waitress that I was Celiac and she knew all the protocols right away. She went into detail about how the chef really tries to make the majority of the menu gluten-free, that they have protocols around changing gloves, knives, etc. She also went into detail about how some dishes were gluten-free, but we make in a combined fryer, so they wouldn't be suitable for me. I have 3 tacos, the jerk cauliflower, the skirt steak, and the brisket taco. All very very good! There is also a good selection of drinks, I got a pineapple White Claw. read more

I really like the look of the restaurant. It's chic and has cool decor and I've seen pictures of the roof patio and that looks cool too. It was my second time here and I was super disappointed this time around. I had really high expectations because of the experience I had last time. We were there on a Tuesday. The server taking care of us was almost the bartend. I think. Super short hair. Anyway, I let the server know about my allergy and she said everything was gluten free and didn't talk about any cross contamination of the fryers. She was attentive, my water didn't go empty, and I could tell she actually cared. Tonight's service was just a shame. Every other table had a water jug but ours. My water was never refilled. My boyfriend had to flag someone down to ask for another drink. Meanwhile we were told we have until 8:45 to eat and leave. So to have to flag someone down to ask for another drink was just absurd. The food tonight was so different then last time. Nachos were bad. Tostadas were dry. I mean nothing about this dinner was enjoyable other then seeing the dogs walk past the window. We live a half hour away and again I had high expectations and raced there after work tonight wanting that same experience and I was just let down. Won't be back anytime soon. read more

We have dined at Comida several times and each time have enjoyed the ambiance ( we have sat on the roof, at fire pit on street and in the restaurant), the service and the food/drinks. The portions are generous and full of flavor. I highly recommend their spicy margarita, it's made with just the right amount of heat . We had the pleasure of having Lydia serve us our last visit and she was great . She was pleasant,professional and was attentive without being overbearing . She had great knowledgeable about the menu and made some good suggestions! I do wish they had better hours. They close at 9 on the weekend which I think is a bit early. The service/management is terrible. I made a reservation for 2 a week in advance. We show up and no table is ready because they sat other people. Then we are told that the deck has been bought out and they'll eventually need to move our table. We ended up leaving with a ruined evening. read more

We actually really liked this place. We got the plant-based options and they were delicious. We even contemplated bringing our families here too but ultimately decided against it because I thought their oily chips would give my parents a heart attack. We enjoyed dinner at Comida with another couple last night. The food and service were good, and the main floor dining room was attractive and comfortable. Appetizers included a good, chunky style guacamole & roasted cauliflower queso. I had tacos, and everyone else had BYOB ensaladas. The menu offers a lot of options and its own interpretation of mexican inspired dishes. In our neighborhood so we'll be back for more tastings and cocktails on the rooftop too. Comida is a fantastic restaurant with attentive, friendly staff and a great menu. A big shout out to Jamie, the manager and Wilson in particular for their awesome personalities and positive demeanor. The whole team is great. The food is wonderful and they always have my favorite beer on tap. The chicken tacos in particular are phenomenal. I highly recommend this restaurant. If you are headed to a Northwestern football game or basketball game from out of town make sure you get to Comida before you head down to the game. Enjoy! read more

Great tacos! The breading on the shrimp had a hint of sweetness. The steak was tender and the pork shoulder has great flavors.

Ugh! We really wanted to like this place, but oh my, was it a major disappointment. The service was unfortunately, incompetent from our drinks, apps and entrees. No doubt service is a challenge these days but this experience was pretty bad. The food was a huge miss as well. Cold entrees and inaccurate requests along with messy table tops and empty water glasses was difficult to accept. Sadly we will not choose to return. We love Central st but not Comida. read more

We met friends at Comida tonight (in Evanston), rooftop seating. It was my first time there. I was skeptical at first, after reading not so great reviews about this restaurant. -- For the record I give this place 5 stars. The staff was so amazing, kind, accommodating, friendly, and prompt. It was a bit chilly tonight so we asked them to light the table top burner, and they did it right away, happily! It started drizzling and we asked for an umbrella and they gave us one, happily! We wanted a photo and asked if they can take one of the group, they did so happily! Again the food is great. I ordered crunchy shrimp tacos and pork shoulder tacos, they were seasoned well, perfect crunchiness and flavor. Vegetables were fresh. Salsas and chips were made fresh and all the salsas were glavorful! Best yet my margarita was delicious and not a mix (I had 3)! Overall, I would come here often especially since they have this great rooftop. Although it was drizzly and dark outside, we had a great time and did not notice the weather. Thanks to the staff at Comida. Shout out to Jack who was not even our assigned server. They all deserve big tips! read more

We recently discovered this place and ordered pick-up (due to COVID-19). The staff member who answered the phone was courteous and very helpful. We ordered the cauliflower curry, pupusas, chorizo taco, and mushroom veggie taco. The food was quick and we picked up 10min after the call! Woot! Curbside pickup went smoothly. We really liked the curry and pupusas. Chorizo taco was a little bland (a squeeze of our own lime helped). But the mushroom veggie taco was good. FYI: The curry description mentioned "sweet potato rice" which turns out to be rice with sweet potato. Still good tho! We will definitely order again soon! read more

Came here for the first time last night. Good and somewhat unique menu with traditional favorites and new twists. Started with Hearts of Palm Ceviche with grilled pineapple and radish. Cool vegetarian take. Intense acidic and salty flavors. Accompanied by homemade tortilla chips, also salty. Could have used small plates and a spoon to help serve. Next, Shrimp Tacos. Large portion (2) of heavily battered fried shrimp with guac topper. Tasty, but again, salty. My wife had a steak and a lamb taco which she enjoyed. My overall impression is that Comida Cantina has great potential. The downside for me was the over the top salty flavor profile of everything I had. If cut back say, 50%, I'd return, but as it is, not to my taste. read more

I was so excited to go to comida for an early dinner with some of my girlfriends, but I'm sad to say I was very dissatisfied. First, we sat on the roof top and while the views were amazing, the sun was shining very bright. We were the only ones on the roof at the time and asked if we could be moved to a more shady spot but we were told we couldn't move because the other tables were reserved. Next, it took forever to get our food, just for are empanadas to be ice cold! Now the waiter did apologize, but he had a bit of an attitude about it. Lastly, our waiter finally came over with the check and pretty much asked us to leave. It was the worst experience ever, not to mention they charge $5 a taco! Do t waste your money. read more

We were super excited to try Comida last night. We came up from the city and our friends from the suburbs were meeting us for diner. My wife made reservations and was told we couldn't sit on the roof because it was closed for a private event. No problem for us to sit inside. So, we show up and the entire restaurant was closed for a wedding. No one called us to cancel. If they would have, we could have made other plans. Further, we tried to call them and no one would even pick up. Lucky we found another place to eat and we salvaged the evening. However, very disappointed at the lack of customer service and the major inconvenience. read more

We happened upon Comida while walking around 5:30 on a Friday, and got extremely lucky that they had an outdoor table for two and are dog-friendly outside! The menu is quite comprehensive and reasonably priced, and Lydia was delightful. The "Kamoosh" turned out to be nachos (I guess we were expecting more of a dip from the description) but was still amazing. Really great wood fired chicken, and the guava margarita is to die for!!! read more

Ordered for pickup from here for my family of 4. I got the black bean soup and vegan chorizo tacos. The vegan chorizo was actually just crumbled up "beyond" meat, and the taco was boring and had no flavor. The black bean soup was also flavorless. Everyone else's food was not remarkable. Best part was the guacamole. You're much better off at any of the authentic Mexican restaurants in the area. read more

This restaurant is an excellent addition to the North Shore. Friendly, accommodating staff makes you feel welcome and has spot-on menu and drink suggestions. Our server, Lydia, was terrific! Our daughter's burrito was generous and tasty, and my husband's tacos were outstanding. My BYO bowl salad hit the spot, and it's great to be able to select options for it. Our margaritas were very good--not too sweet and tasted incredibly fresh. We loved the way a simple order of guac and chips was elevated by the addition of red and green dipping sauces. I've been here 3 times. The first time was when they were just opening up and testing menu items, and the food was amazing. The second time it seemed okay, but tonight it was just awful. First off, the staff are very friendly and helpful, every time we've been there. The prices are okay, and would be fine if the quality of the food was better. Now first off, this is the second time we've shown up at 10 to find the kitchen half closed, and serving a limited menu (they're open til 11), which is a little odd since it's not really a 'bar' place. They have one, but it would say it's not a focal point. We got a chicken cheese empanada which tasted like chemicals and burned food. The dipping sauce was cloyingly sweet, and had a flavor I can't quite describe. The margaritas were also chemically-tasting It's like we showed up while everything was still being cleaned, but they made food with it anyway. FWIW, The guacamole was excellent. I know many people love Comida, and the staff are great, but it was our last visit tonight. read more

Took a long time to get anything, apps were forgotten and brought after entree. The food was mediocre and over salted. we were told no guacamole on a Saturday night, and then guac was served with certain entrees?? Over all a disappointment. read more

I was so excited to try this new addition to Central Street but it let me down. The atmosphere was cool but the food was mediocre at best. It lacked flavor, the tacos especially. The worst part- the bartenders use plastic straws to taste every drink...while sitting at the bar they used 15+ plastic straws which went right into the trash. Completely not environmentally friendly...please switch to paper straws!! And please step up your game Comida! read more

Decent but not sure worth the wait or price. Luckily we got carry out to eat next door at beer on central. I got the fish. Asked for no sauce or salt or spice (yes plan whitefish) but they put on a ton of spice rub. It was decent but it what I specifically asked for. Ceviche good. Sirloin was ok but overdone. Did not ask how we wanted it cooked so had to ask for medium rare (more well done). Cleary also don't do a ton of takeout. Could not find the plastic utensils :). Finally got a manager to dig them out...again decent but prob not going back. read more

Good, not great. Was very excited to try it since there has been a lit of hype about it. We went for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. The decor is nice, new, clean and bright, but there is a serious sound transmission problem. There is no sound baffling on the ceiling, which is a shame because, eventually, they will have to install some sort of sound proofing. The glass walls in the front of the space act as sound amplifiers so its very loud, even when the restaurant is not full. The food was just okay. I ordered three tacos - lamb, pork and steak. The lamb taco was served in a cold, partially-cooked corn tortilla. It was flimsy and falling apart. The other two tacos were served in flour tortillas, which also fell apart. The pork and lamb fillings were very delicious but had to be eaten outside of the tortillas. The steak taco filling was nothing special and was also served in a flour tortilla that was falling apart. The tacos would have been better served in doubled corn tortillas-more flavorful and sturdy. My husband had the Cuban sandwich and the elote and he enjoyed both. Next time, I will try something other than the tacos. read more

The design, lighting and overall ambience is great. However, we found the food and seating sub-par. The bench seat must be 4" higher than the chairs, so you feel awkward sitting there. Table are very tight together, with about a foot of space between each. Overall, the three items we ordered were all disappointing. The steak taco meat was very dry and over cooked. The curry was boring and some of the vegetables were over cooked, and some were hard. Maybe this summer we will give them another try. read more

The food just wasn't good I got a steak salad and while the lettuce and dressing was good the skirt steak was awful it tasted like it had A1 steak sauce on it, eww! Someone else got chicken salad said chicken was dry. Another person had tacos one comment too salty another no flavor. The worst part the chips that come with guacamole were dripping in so much oil they were inedible after a couple. The restaurant is beautiful, the food not so much. read more

This is really more of a 2.5 rating. I REALLY want to love this place. I was so excited for it to open. We dined in twice pre-covid, and the ambiance is gorgeous, definitely 5 stars for ambiance alone. The drinks are also very good--although quite pricey for the tiny size. The food, both times we dined in was very "meh." Definitely nothing to write home about. I was willing to chalk it up to "new to the scene and working the kinks out." We have since ordered several times during quarantine, wanting to support local businesses. Both times, the tacos were just not good for either me or my husband. I have had the pork, which tastes like it was cooked in chicken broth and nothing else, the sauteed shrimp, and the vegan chorizo. The presentation is good, toppings are nice, but there is just no flavor. My husband was saying he thinks the menu is too big and they are trying to do too much, that maybe a smaller menu and honing just those items would be better. I don't know. I REALLY want this place to survive, but when our neighbors asked where we were ordering out from, and we said Comida, they said they were very unimpressed and wouldn't be back. So we aren't alone in our impression. I am going to try and order something that isn't tacos to see if it changes my thoughts. read more
