Business owner told my friend that Oprah is the only black woman with real hair. He said this because when he asked her if her hair was real, and I'm not making this up, she said "do you ask every woman that?" the Oprah thing was his response. She told him that was rude and racist. He then called her a fat c×nt. Never in my life have I seen such outward disrespect for a person of color, let alone toward a female. I don't know who raised this man but they did a poor job. He's completely inappropriate. I confronted him because I was so upset. When I asked him if he really used those nasty words he smiled and said "yea. She is a fat c×nt." I'm not gonna lie. I cussed him out. I dropped a lot of f yous on him. Horrible service. We walked in to check out the game and we walked to the back and the bartender(girl) yells across the bar if we're playing lotto machines,we say no, so she yells at us again "what drink you want", we ask if the game is playing and she turns the tv on. I then waited about 5 min at the bar while she talked to her friend at the end of the bar. When our friend arrives, she yells across the bar again by using his name and it got everyones attention and she tells him to get a beer. He said he didn't want one but she kept yelling at him to come and get one. She was very rude. There isn't a cook, so their lame menu is fries, tots and two cold sandwiches. My brother and friend are regulars there and they said the bartender wasn't friendly like usual and will think about going again. I've only been a couple times and that is the first time I didn't like the customer service. read more

This place is a warm, happy, friendly, relaxed locale with great drinks and lovely, open-minded bartenders who serve you well. I always feel welcomed here. The drinks are priced right and you can't beat the location. It's a good place to chill, talk your friends, and the food, well, it's the bomb! Stopped in with some friends for a night cap and a game of pool. The Commodore is definitely a low-key place with nice beers on tap, priced just right. The bartender was comically surly, riffing with my friend that he couldn't get the drink he wanted before eventually giving it to him, and then trying the same with me like I didn't just watch this performance 3 minutes earlier. Commodore staff's is first class along with lots of other things. Next to a five star menu offered by bartender Andrew - it is exquisite. Don't know what I've had a better time. Drinks are great - huge and delicious. The "crashing" of pool balls in the background gives it a real local flavor to the place and says "fun. Can't say when I had a better Time out . Since the Matador closed :tears: we make this our go-to spot when we're staying Downtown. We are usually here late night, so I couldn't tell you about the food, but the drinks are spot on. The place also has pinball games, pool tables, and a jukebox. Nice place to end your late night of drinking. read more

Went in Sunday morning for brunch with some friends. Nice, clean little joint. They keep remodeling and it shows (friends told me they had changed it up). I had the biscuits and gravy with "chicken fried chicken" and my wife had the french toast. Very good. I was very impressed! I didn't eat for the rest of the day and priced very reasonably! We don't get into downtown too often, but we have already planned our next two trips here! I am even thinking about getting in on their pinball tournaments! They just added 5 machines! Ok, there are a lot of knocks on the restaurant (never been to the lounge). But, I love this place. Forget that I live close to it. I'm about to give a bunch of bad things about it in my review, but for some reason I love every bit of it. So... The service isn't that great. You get a glass of water, tons of time before you order, and sometimes you'll have a waitress who doesn't know English very well. Once you get your food, the refills are few and far between. But...the food (I always get the chicken strips) is amazing. No, it won't blow your mind with flavors. No, its not original, in fact you can see the cook pull them out of the freezer from a bag, drop them in a fryer, etc. But every person I've taken there (with one exception) has said it was some of the best comfort food they've had. The place is always near-empty, which adds to a personal feeling if you're just hanging out with a friend or two (don't go with more than four people). Trust me, I know this review looks bad. I also know that I am an expert on good, simple comfort food (as noted by my waistline). This place, if you feel down, will boost you up with artery-clogging old-fashioned food. read more

First time I walked in here i was insulted by a heavier set blonde girl because she wanted me to buy a drink before i could use the restroom. I was about to pee my pants! And i really would have prefered to look at a menu with a clear mind/bladder. I would highly recommend to never ever come here. She was calling me all kinds of dirty names once I decided to go elsewhere. I'm not the type to pull the "race card" but I'm almost wondering if the reason for me being immediately mistreated was because of my ethnicity. I can't think of anything else that would cause a person to go into attack mode to the point of almost following me out the door? This is more a review of the lounge than the grill. Become a regular in their bar and it's the closest thing to the bar from Cheers you can get. Everyone here is extremely friendly and will make anything you'd like-- be warned though, the drinks can get VERY strong, but luckily you are within stumbling distance to the MAX. They open the pool tables for free if you're nice enough... that and because the coin slots on the things take some love. The charm is appreciated the more you visit, I can't stress that enough. Every patron there is a regular and everyone knows each other. It's a family waiting to expand, and you're welcome to it if you've got the right attitude. read more

My fiancé and I wandered into The Commodore on a recent trip to Portland. The day bartender was delightful! I was suffering from indecisiveness and she suggested a muddled cocktail with fresh fruit--it was very tasty! She recommended some delicious local beers for my partner, and even wrote down the names/addresses of rental bicycle shops and other local attractions. Above and beyond! We came back the next night and met the night bartender, who was very friendly and entertaining! The next time we come back to Portland we will definitely be swinging by! Before a Timbers game I went inside with a cup of coffee while my boyfriend grabbed a beer. They said if I wanted to keep my coffee that I would need to leave or they would toss my drink. The bartender who is too fat to reach his own Johnson served me a beer in a filthy glass. It had shit caked around the inside and I did not realize until I got a little piece of citrus pulp in my mouth from it even though lemons were no where in sight. read more

Disappointed. We brought our family from AZ to this bar b/c we come somewhat regularly & have never had major issues. Sure, they basically offer zero food options, but the service is usually nice & drinks decently priced. We were excited to bring cousins here for a few games of pool, but our experience was tainted by the bartender. My cousin has an AZ Identification Card, which does not expire. The bartender started off the interaction by saying, "Arizona IDs are the most faked IDs." As you can guess, when he saw that there was no expiration date, he assumed the ID was fake, and proceeded to speak to my cousin with increasing disrespect as he quizzed her repeatedly. Once it was established that the ID was real, there was no change in tone from the bartender. Good customer service can be challenging to maintain, I understand, but common decency is apparently something this bartender struggles with. read more

The commodore lounge serves up the best martini I've had in years. I also got a compliment on my perfect nose immediately, which is what I look for in a place. The Doritos were delicious. You can't go wrong on this side of burnside. Matt and Rachel and even Bobby are fantastic bartenders. I recommend the vieux carre and the spanish coffe. What I love the most though are the people that work there, watching out and pouring drinks that'll take care of you. read more
