Walking into this place really is like stepping back in time! I came here with my mom and dad for Mother's Day. It's got a very good energy, and the food was lovely. I had the Hotcakes and Bacon. The pancakes were slightly chewy but I liked that, haha. My mom and I split a cinnamon bun and it was delicious. It is a bit loud and hard to hear others talking when there's a performer, but I bring ear protection with me everywhere since I am sensitive to noise, so it was ok. The live performance is amazing and really adds a lot to this place's energy. It certainly got quieter once the performer packed up though. The service was great too! There aren't a lot of people working here, and we came at a busy time at first. However they were still really kind and helpful. For example, I asked for honey to put in my coffee and it was given to me before I even fully finished asking, haha! I did not mind the wait for service and food because it was just nice to take in the place and draw a bit. The wait was also not that long, especially considering the few people working here and just how busy it was. I'm a little embarrassed to say that I had never been to the Commodore before... despite having worked very close by and spending a decent amount of time in the area in the early 2000s. I'm glad we checked it out though! I was a little thrown off when we first walked in and there was live music playing. It was awesome, but it felt too loud for a saturday at lunch time. Love this place mainly things haven't changed in years. Menu, Ambiance, and service. Nothing exciting. But the same comfortable seats, with the comfortable servers, and the same comfortable food. We had a burger and fries and pan fried sole. It was good. Comfortable. Cheap. Prices are so cheap here. And now they allow credit and debit. Check it out. I am so used to it being there I kinda take it for granted like the worn sweater in the closet and one day you will look for it it will be gone. This is an Edmonton institution that you just have to visit if you haven't already. It is the oldest running family owned establishment in Edmonton (since 1942). They were also chosen by the Food Network as one of the 12 best greasy spoons in Canada, and as one of the 50 things that define Edmonton by the Edmonton Journal. They used to have a huge menu with a huge variety of dishes but we were there on the weekend and they seemed to have pared it down to a reasonable size. Instead of a whole section of Chinese dishes they had a daily Chinese special. The food is great and not your typical greasy diner food when I think of a greasy spoon. I often have the cheeseburger whether it is for breakfast, lunch or diner. It is a pretty basic burger but they still use home made patties. Prices are also cheap. They used to only be a cash only business but recently they started accepting debit and credit, a relief for those of us who hardly ever carry cash anymore. The staff will recognize you if you come in regularly and you will often spot some celebrities and personalities from around Edmonton there too. This place is in seemingly tucked away in plain sight downtown. I stopped in for brunch one day off and was pleasantly surprised. The charming atmosphere and pleasant waitress made the whole experience exactly what I was looking for... a good "greasy spoon" brekkie that doesn't break the bank. I had a mushroom and cheddar omelet, hashbrowns and a side of bacon. It came with a side of rye toast. The order came out super quickly and a generous portion. The bacon had a bit of a strong flavour but came out perfectly cooked. I would definitely mosy over to this place again. read more

If you haven't been before, it's a throwback to old school diners. An institution really as it's been open since 1942! Prices are ridiculously cheap. The inside is very diner-esque with old school stools and tables to sit at. We came on a Wednesday for dinner. There's also a lot of specials to choose from. Breakfast specials go till 11:00am. There's Chinese dishes on the menu...let that sink in for a bit. Our waitress was great. She's one of those servers that's been working in the industry forever; old, charming and genuine. - Homemade soup - like a minestrone soup minus the pasta/rice. Good enough to whet our appetite. - Egg roll, sweet and sour ribs and chicken fried rice ($8.75) - the fried rice tasted like they didn't use a wok to cook it? The egg roll was actually better than expected - massive but crispy and a good filling. The sweet and sour ribs were decent. - Breaded pork cutlets ($8.75) - mushroom sauce was good and we liked how it was lightly breaded. Litaly was a big fan of the side of coleslaw. It was a little more tangy than other ones. The mashed potato was sadly bland. - Fried sole fillet with lemon ($8.50) - fillet was fried nicely but desperately needed some sort of sauce. The lemon didn't add much. The fries were the better option over the mashed potatoes (your two choices). They came out hot and crispy. - Strawberry rhubarb pie and blueberry pie ($2.95 each) - okay, on to the pies! This was definitely the best part of our meal. Our waitress added a generous scoop of ice cream to both and warmed them up. The blueberry tasted like the real thing and was my favourite of the two. The strawberry rhubarb was much sweeter. Cash only. Not sure if I'll be running back but if I want something dirt cheap downtown, you could do worse. Maybe I'll come try their breakfast next. read more

Went in to try it out around 1pm on a weekday. Very crowded but luckily i found a window table and ordered sausages and eggs with a side order of pancakes and coffee. Waitress was friendly and they had a couple newspapers around to read so that was good. The place was very loud as most people must have been regulars a guess. The food was very no frills basic and slightly below average sized portions. Potatoes could have used some onions or spices . Coffee wasn't great but was drinkable . Price was average for Edmonton these days. Might go again to try something lunch-like sometime. read more

The first thing that has to be said, is that this is the LEAST pretentious restaurant in Edmonton, in addition to being one of the oldest. I first came here as a child in the early 1960's with my Father, and I still have a weak spot for the old fashioned milkshakes which are still made with an ancient Hamilton Beach mixer. One does not come to the Commodore for culinary inspiration, one comes for good, honest food served up by nice people. Breakfasts, (all day!) burgers, and old fashioned Prairie style Chinese food are the order of the day and the menu alone is high in entertainment value. No other café in town will offer you fried mushrooms on toast... Specials of the day are on the chalkboard behind the old time lunch counter, and are often the best choices. No where else downtown can you get a filet of sole, with veg and mashed potato, soup, dessert and coffee for $10.00, including tip. Great value, great atmosphere, great folks, history and a full belly. Bring cash, they do not accept debit or credit cards. *Since I wrote this review some things have changed, and I am learning to love this restaurant even more. The ambience and the friendly atmosphere remain, but as the third generation of the Gee family comes on board the menu has been modernized, and the quality has just improved. Dave and Willi's daughter Meagan has graduated culinary school, and is adding her own special touch in the kitchen, with wonderful results. The Chop Suey is gone, as is the mushrooms on toast, but new takes on diner classics have taken their place, and they are great. On recent visits I have enjoyed a Corned Beef Hash brunch special, while listening to live music on a Saturday morning (music Sat and Sun, 11-1 pm.) and what was easily the best Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwich I have eaten in Edmonton in 25 years. The prices have gone up a tad, but the value is still the best in Downtown. You will not find food this good for these prices anywhere. Many of the favourites are still on the menu, and you can still get the daily Chinese Special which is a wonderful throwback to a simpler time. This gem of a diner on Jasper Avenue is worth more of a look that ever. The lifelong love affair continues! read more

The Commodore is as stark and plain as greasy spoon diners come - it's apparent lack of character is what gives it its character. If I didnt' know it were 2008, inside the Commodore I might not be able to tell what year it was, unless I picked up a newspaper or a particularly fashionable person happened to be dining there. It's got tables and chairs, chrome and green vinyl stools at a bar counter, and the specials posted up on the wall. Coffee's $1.25 and refills are 25 cents. Two eggs, toast and hashbrowns are $3.25. It's been around 50 plus years and the servers are casual, friendly and fast on their toes. No surprise lots of regulars were here, flipping the pages of the Sun and drinking refill after refill. You can get a milkshake here for three dollars and change, a glass of juice for $1.25, Toast with jam for $1.50 and there are a bunch of hot meal specials for under $8. The Commie's a fixture in E-town that's seen it grow and change, without changing much itself. But old-fashioned diners aren't supposed to. Cash only - just like in the olden days;) read more

I want to write another review of Commodore. I was here (again) just last week with the husband. The waitress knew who we were, due to my husband's insane order of 6 pancakes, 4 sausages, 4 eggs, and a coffee. The waitress almost got the whole order right! And mine too! (mine is a little bit more simple). It's great that we are establishing rapport, because they already expect us again on Sunday. We love this place, and it's most definitely our "Sunday Place". For some reason I'd never noticed this restaurant until I read about it on Yelp, and I've been by the Commodore several times. This restaurant is nothing fancy, just simple, classic comfort foods. The decor looks like it probably hasn't been changed in 50 years. This isn't a new restaurant, trying to look like a classic diner. This is a classic diner that (from what I gather) looks like its stayed the same for the last 50 years or so. Even the bill was handwritten. I haven't seen that i a restaurant since I was a kid. I ordered a mushroom burger, fries and a can of coke. The burger was $3.50, fries were $2.50 (side items are priced separately, they don't come with the meal) and the coke was $1.35. With tax I got a simple and filling meal (I actually couldn't finish the fries) for $7.35. Word of warning - they don't accept debit or credit, just cold hard cash. Service was quick and friendly. The restaurant isn't very large, and I have a feeling with the low prices they have that The Commodore is probably pretty busy throughout the day. read more

Free parking on the street at meters before 9. Cash only so grab some coin. Had the ham and eggs, was great. I think you get good value for $7.50. I have a story about the Commodore from when I was a kid - yes I have been going to the Commodore for over fifteen years. Anyway, my mom loved the Commodore. In the mornings, really early, she would wake me up well before school started and drive us alllll the way downtown (we lived far north side near Castle Downs) and take me to the Commodore. She would park in the back alley and open the door to the restaurant through the back where the kitchen was, we would walk through the employee/kitchen entrance and she'd wave at the cook and his wife who was the server. The couple that owns the restaurant knew my mom well, and would allow her to use this entrance because they knew my mom was ill and was in a wheelchair and needed the help. My mom was a poor lady, we never had money, but it didn't matter because the food was priced so well. My mom and I ate a full amazing home made breakfast for about 8 or 9 dollars. She would take me to school afterwards and I'd be so full and happy during the mornings because the Commodore was her "treat" to me. Fast forward to the present day, I'm twenty four now, my mom passed when I was 17 and we can no longer go to this place together, but the great thing about all this is that I can go with my boyfriend now every week when I am on break from school, and the lovely woman who runs the place still knows who I am and knows my order and she sometimes reminds me of my mom and tells me "Ah yes, I remember your mom Caroline, bless her heart." The food is always warm and hearty, the prices are always insanely low, and the owners feel like family. I'll continue to go to the Commodore as long as it stays open, and hopefully I can bring my son or daughter to it before school starts in the mornings for an awesome breakfast. read more

A group of friends of mine comes here sporadically for brunch on the weekends, and it's great because you can eat a lot for very little money. It's also a great stop if you want a huge milkshake. A fast, good-quality early-morning breakfast here is always great. And the service (I'm assuming the owners run the show) is always first-rate. The last time I was here, they kept bringing me sections of the newspaper as other patrons finished with them. And my coffee was never empty or cold. You aren't going to get gourmet eggs and bacon here - it's a greasy spoon in the truest sense, although not as greasy as all that. Was pretty excited to try out this Edmonton landmark of sorts. After just working a 12 hour night shift I showed up at exactly 7am. Coffee was ready to go. Ordered promptly. Though what stood out was the amazing service. Our waitress was beyond friendly; but not annoying. She went out of her way to make we had a great experience. I discovered the Commodore with friends after shopping at City Market last summer and have made several subsequent trips. The decor is dated, but I don't go to restaurants to be wowed by the furniture. The breakfast foods are better than the lunch items, but for $5-6 you really can't complain. An excellent little diner with even better prices. Both my friend and I had bacon and eggs with an extra pancake on the side and coffee. The bacon was not as crispy as I'd like, but that's a matter of taste. The eggs were perfectly over-medium and the potatoes were real, fried potato, not the tasteless deep fried kind. But the pancake; oh that pancake! A soft, fluffy, almost melt in your mouth piece of heaven. The best pancake I've had in a long time. The coffee was of the unforgettable diner variety, made palatable with copious amounts of cream. Do all diners get their terrible coffee from the same supplier? The service was fast and friendly. When I walked in, I just kinda grabbed a seat at the bar on a nice Sunday morning ready for some quick breakfast and that's exactly what I got. Considering the price, it was fantastic. I got an omelette, hash browns, toast, bacon, and coffee for around 12.50 CAD. It was very cheap for all that and was everything you expect from a run-of-the-mill diner. Except the Coffee. Weak coffee. Watery coffee. Please for the love of god, put more coffee grounds in your machine. For years I worked across the street from this restaurant and never paid it a second glance. Well that is not totally true I used to think it was a Russian restaurant due to the cyclic styled writing on the sign. When I asked some colleagues about it I quickly found out that no one had tried it... so up for a challenge... we gave it a go. Another poster mentioned that this is a a 50's dinner. Not a dinner that is trying to be hip and retro by looking like a 50's dinner but a real dinner from the 50's. They were cool when it was normal, stayed that way when it wasn't cool and now are back into the swing of things. I kinda wish they had a bit of fake smoke that could hover near the roof to complete the feeling. Note that is a compliment not a dig. There is no where else in the city that you can get a burger, fries, and a fresh milkshake for less than 10 dollars (including tip). This place is fan-tan-tastic. read more

Fantastic little place and I can't believe this was my first time trying it. My husband and I had the day to ourselves and figured we'd give it a shot. They had live music and I'm gonna be honest it was pretty loud and I was a smidge bothered by how we had to yell at each other but towards the end the guy singing really grew on us. The waitress was super sweet and knew her stuff, and when she saw my six month pregnant belly squealed about how adorable I was lol. My husband ordered an omelette and the home fries with toast and I got the cheeseburger and fries. Both meals, really good, no complaints. The waitress talked me into a piece of blueberry pie telling me "you have to get it, the baby is going to love it!" and she was right, absolutely amazing slice of pie. This is one of my favorite breakfast places to go to! I have been here a few times now and have always enjoyed the food, the atmosphere and the staff. They serve breakfast all day and for a very very affordable price! You can usually order breakfast and coffee for $10 or less. The portions are great. Not too much and not too little. They also serve soups, sandwiches and Chinese food. I have only ever had the breakfast though so I can't comment on the other food they serve. I ordered my usual sausage and eggs served with pan fried potatoes and a side of toast. You can order your eggs however you like them and get to choose between white, brown and rye toast. I ordered my eggs poached soft and dry rye toast. They have jams and peanut butter to choose from. All was tasty and hit the spot. I don't think much has changed regarding decor since it opened back in 1942, but that is what I love about this place! I enjoy the simplicity of it and it is always clean. When a friend suggested this for lunch downtown, I immediately asked, "Where?!" I've walked by it so many times, and didn't notice it was there. This HAS to be one of the best kept secrets in downtown Edmonton (though I'm not quite sure the secret hasn't been let out, it's always so busy!). This restaurant has been here for years and years, and coming inside is kind of like a time warp- in a good way. It has an authentic diner feel to it, because, well, it is an authentic diner. I ordered breakfast, ham and eggs, which came with toast and potatoes. It was SO good! The kind of home-style cooking that just makes you feel happy. And the price? Out of this world for the portion and quality, $8! The service is great as well, with very friendly staff. I also ordered the blueberry pie for dessert,warmed up with ice cream on it, because you have to treat yourself every now and then, right? It was definitely a treat! Tasted just like my grandma's old fashioned blueberry pie :) I would definitely recommend checking this spot out, for (all day) breakfast and lunch. Went too The Commodore for Dinner on Friday . The Service was very friendly and prompt ,had a menu within a minute of taking my seat and a drink in 2 minutes . I love the fact this place is not a franchise or a chain like Earls ,its Unique and thats Is what makes it special . I had the Chinese food platter which was very tasty and a strawberry Shake , with a pce Of pie all for under 12 dollars . It was clean and quiet which was nice !! Neat little hole in the wall cafe. When I lived downtown I used to come here all the time for breakfast. The food is honest, as is the pricing. I recommend the omelettes and cinnamon buns. Be sure to order your cinnamon bun 10 mins before you hope to eat it. Best consumed warm and melty! read more
