This is getting great reviews because of the atmosphere and the service. Food is decent but not standoutish. Although to be fair we didn't order the breakfast items which our server ( who also might have the owner) recommended to us. Loved the atmosphere. Old typewriters, photos on the wall, and little poems and sayings typed out. I felt like I was inside solving a mystery. Loved it. The owners were great. Checking on us and super friendly. Food was average. My husband got the burger and fries. It wasn't bad but for the price he definately expected more fries. I had the bulgogi which was tasty but again for the price I have had better. I probably would return again to try breakfast because that is what they are known for. But for lunch I would go somewhere else. read more

It made our day to eat lunch here. From the second we walked in the door we were greeted by a hearty and sincere welcome. The place has a cozy feel to it and is festooned with vintage images and items. Nice to see a historic diner that has an original patina. There was even what seemed to be a show of photos from around the world that was quite interesting. And we were looking for a classic diner lunch - but when we saw the menu we all had the Bulgogi Sandwich! So not so classic. But we were not disappointed. What a treat it was. Severed on a baguette bun, it was filled with delicious moist bulgogi beef and dressed with lettuce and cabbage. We got it just a little less than spicy and the heat was pleasant and just crept up on you. It came with fries that were nice and crispy - gravy on the side. We enjoyed every bite. When I was a young lad I would accompany my dad deer hunting every fall. I hated the actual hunting part, but I loved everything else about those weekends... the fall countryside, riding ATVs, hanging with dad and his buddies picking up on offside jokes they thought I wouldn't understand, motel stays with movie rentals and Junk food, and eating at The Copper Kettle in Irma, Alberta. The Copper Kettle was (as far as my recollection goes) the only restaurant in Irma, where we stayed every hi ring season. It was a typical small town restaurant, owned by a friendly Asian family. The burger and fries just hit different in that outdated little restaurant. The Red Goose took me back to my childhood at The Copper Kettle. I read about this spot on an Edmonton foodie account on Instagram. I have a good friend who lives in Hazeldean so I immediately forwarded the post to him and he replied "I haven't ate there since it was The Purple Cow in 1975". So our lunch date was set. This place is awesome. No "designed to look retro" here. This place is old, outdated, clean and cozy as hell. The owners are incredibly friendly and the food is just familiar and comforting. There is nothing outstanding about the food, it is regular small town restaurant fare, but it's done perfectly for a most reasonable price and you just want to support these folks. Run by an older Asian couple, him in the front and her cooking in a small open kitchen in the back. Breakfast or lunch, with sandwiches, burgers, or even bulgogi with rice - there's something for everyone. Open 7 days a week, business has continued to be excruciatingly slow since covid started. They have zero online presence, no social media & are not on any delivery apps. A true #iykyk hidden gem that could use the support. One of the most positive & cheery souls I've ever met, he sends EVERY person out the door with a boisterous "(HAVE A) HAPPY DAY!" and an offer of an elbow bump (high 5s pre-covid). Nothing much special about this place. Had to run an errand at Bonnie Doon Mall and I was starving for breakfast afterwards so I pit stopped here. Ordered the breakfast special with scrambled eggs and crispy bacon. Even though I specifically requested the crispy bacon, it came back slightly undercooked - one part of it was so chewy I had to spit it out. Other than that, it was fine but unremarkable. With other breakfast places closer to where I live, may or may not be back. I usually go someplace else for Saturday breakfast and I won't be changing my regular spot to here. read more

Do you like to start your day Happy? This is where you should do it. I first ate in this restaurant in the early 1980's when I worked a few blocks away, and it was a handy lunch spot. This tiny Hazeldean institution is quaint and cozy, run by very nice folks, who wish you, "Happy Day!" when you leave. The original owners have moved on, but the folks running it now have maintained the traditions, the menu, and the atmosphere beautifully. I only re-discovered this spot recently, and I have been back several times, with more visits planned. The menu is simple, mostly breakfast and lunch fare, as they are not open late. The food is not going to bring in any Michelin stars, but the comfort component is strong. I tend to land here for breakfast, which is always generous and tasty, as are the sandwiches and lunch fare. They also have a small selection of Korean dishes, which I plan to try soon. The service tends to vary, as this is a 2 person operation. When it is busy you may have to be patient, but your patience will always pay off. I am a huge fan of cozy neighbourhood places like this, and I will always support them, especially when they are as good as The Red Goose. This little spot is a blast into the past. It's straight out of the 70/80s and has that retro feel. The serving staff/ owners are genuinely kind and so helpful. Our food was that home cooked, rustic dinner fill. It made me think of my own home town diner! Where the food and the ppl are always good and the Decor is different from everyday views. I am disappointed in the change in price at the Red Goose. We've gone for family breakfasts there occasionally for years, but recently we were very taken aback when we got the bill. Bills should not be a surprise, but the confusing way the menu is written (price per pancake, for example) makes it hard to know what the actual cost of the meal is because the elements are listed separately. We got pancakes and with a breakfast meat or eggs & toast. 2 coffees and 2 juices. The kids did not eat a full adult portion. The food was average greasy spoon quality and taste, as usual. The bill was a baffling itemized list that was over 85$. No number of "Happy Day!" wished upon me or fist bumps for the kiddos is worth that. In retrospect, the extreme friendliness may be an attempt to soften the blow when one asks for the check. Greedflation! I now recommend Red Goose for vintage-y instagram photos where only a coffee is ordered. Sad, really. read more

My expectations for this place weren't too high, but people had said they loved it. For me the owner was adorable, but the food was not. The menu is filled with typical breakfast (bacon & eggs), & lunch (hamburgers) items as well as so other Korean dishes. I had a veggie & bacon omelette that seemed to have a Kraft cheese slice in the middle, i wasn't much of a fan and couldn't finish eating it. The hash browns were lovely. My friend had a cheese burger, which was generic at best and looked more like something you might find at a family bbq. Also, he had a soup (i didn't want to try it) that looked like it was from a can with a bit of veggies added, he couldn't eat much of it. The owner was our server, he was kind and very attentive. This restaurant seems to be great if you hungry in a pinch, but i wouldn't plan my day around coming down. Pricing was odd and not very consistent through out the menu, but for the two of us we paid $25.00 I do have some special dietary needs and this place seemed like i should stick with the items that would be safe, although i did not feel horrible, i defiantly didn't feel great after eating there. read more

We were in the mood for some old-fashioned diner food; thank-you google for pulling up this place! The place is small, cozy, full of old school booths and exactly what we were looking for, they have a selection of everything. We came around 11am and were one of two tables. Which was perfect, because by the time we were leaving around 12pm, it was starting to fill up. Best part, the first pump while walking and the friendly man working! Delightful place! It's an old school diner, with the decor and menu to match. Don't expect to find anything trendy, but they do the classic breakfast staples, do them well, and do so for unbelievably cheap. I believe they also offer lunch items like burgers, sandwiches, and fries, but I haven't had a chance to try any of those. They open early and close early, so that gives you an idea of their focus. The owners are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet, and the service is outstanding. If you love breakfast, and enjoy a good home cooked meal, then I recommend you check out the RED GOOSE! I had the bacon mushroom cheese omelette, which was served with a side of hash browns and toast. The bacon was perfectly crispy paired with just the right amount of fresh mushrooms. The hash browns were definitely home-made, cooked with delicious sauteed onions. The cheese is nothing fancy, but I found it to be surprisingly pleasant. The previous reviewer did not seem to enjoy the cheese used for the omelettes, but I found it to be quite tasty. It really brought me back to my childhood, reminding me of when my mom used to make me grilled cheese sandwiches with kraft singles...YUMMY! My husband ordered a Korean dish of spicy beef. I had a few bites, then a few more, then I wished I had ordered a plate for myself. The spicy beef is a perfect balance of hot and sweet flavours all tossed with carrots, green onions and green peppers. I found it odd that the dish was served with a side of coleslaw, but after having a bite of the spicy beef with rice, the coleslaw was actually refreshing. The owners were incredibly friendly. They made you feel as if they really appreciated your business. In summary, the Red Goose, is not at all fancy, its not gourmet, and most importantly its not pretentious.
