I had an absolutely horrible experience here. I saw Dr. Becker for one appointment and a healthcare plan. Soon after, I developed a bad reaction to a medication and was very ill for a week. I tried to message Dr. Becker with no response at all. I made a second appointment and he didn't show up for the appointment. His front desk staff, who seem pretty clueless, didn't even realize he wasn't in the building. They tried calling him to no avail. At this point, it was 20 minutes past my appointment time. I told them I would never come back, it was so ridiculous. Some of the most unprofessional behavior I have ever encountered. I did receive an apologetic email from Dr. Becker, but he didn't even have a valid excuse. He was just on a trip and forgot to check his email for Monday appointments. I would advise looking elsewhere for a ND. It's also a strange experience to be in a waiting room with people who are in bathing suits and bathrobes as they also have a hot tub/soaking tub and are a wellness center. read more

Returned for a soak and massage visit after several years away. There is a lot of etiquette now and the vibe has shifted from open and relaxed to kind of stiff. Was surprised to find a tub of naked middle aged white men. The front staff was also somewhat cold. Felt like gentrification hit this place hard. The lockers were hard to figure out, per the instructions, but I got it right the second time around. The massage, however, was professional and all-around excellent. No complaints on that part of the visit. Then, when I was leaving I learned there was a charge for the towel that I was not told about upon entering. I had said there was a towel in my car that I forgot and was told "Don't worry. We have towels here for clients." So, felt bait and switch -- and for a couple dollars, why would they bother? This is a good place provided you know the vibe in advance - it is as PDX as it gets, clothing optional, grassroots and no frills. I didn't do my homework so was taken off guard when I went in (so many unexpected dongs!), so be sure to "know before you go." The facility is a good value for the money. It's small but nicely laid out and peaceful. I'm taking off a star because the sauna could have been hotter and the hot tub was not super clean -- I could feel grit on my feet, it was foamy and overchlorinated. I also think they should provide drinking water/cups in the soak area and not charge to "rent" towels -- that would make it a more supportive experience. I visited Common Ground Wellness Cooperative for the first time for a bit of rest and relaxation over a recent long weekend. Visiting a new place like this can be a bit intimidating, so this long review is meant to detail everything you need to know, in case your anxiety is assuaged by information like mine is. Located off 33rd in NE, this facility has a midsize parking lot. Upon entry, approach the front desk where one of two cashiers will help you. After check-in and payment (during which they may ask for a tip for your practitioner, so if you don't want to tip then, bring cash or ask if you can apply it later), they will hold onto your ID. I got a tour on my first time visiting, though I see other reviewers say they did not. If you're slightly early, they may ask you to wait until your service's start time in one of two chairs in the lobby. Once you're at your reservation's start time, proceed through to the back. Remove your outside shoes at the cubbies directly following the curtain. Go to the small locker room. This area can get crowded so you may want to wait at the benches for the hourly transition of folks coming and going to pass. Follow the instructions on the locker to use the lock. Don't forget your code! When I was there, some lockers were not opening correctly - which resulted in guests needing to go to the front desk for help. Thankfully they can help, but it is a bit awkward to go out front when you're nude or in a bathing suit. Cell phones are left in lockers, turned off or silent. List of things to bring: - 1-2 towels (required to sit on, or rent a towel for $2) - non-glass water bottle (they have cups out front but, again, awkward to go out there during your time) - snacks if you want them - robe or sandals if you want them - shampoo/conditioner if you want them - bathing suit if you want one (clothing optional) Okay, items in locker, next head on to the showers. Most folks walk around with a towel around them. The showers are one room with 4-5 shower heads and many towel hooks. Use their scented or unscented body wash. There are two restrooms here if you need them. Though they floors in this area seem clean, they do get wet from people walking around, so if you're icked out by that bring those shower slippers. Then go to the hot tub and sauna! The hot tub area is outdoors, so masks are optional in this area. There is a cold shower, some seating, some nice plants, and a mural. The hot tub itself is two squares attached with an entry area so folks would sort into where there is space. I'm not sure, but I think they said on my tour that there is a temperature difference on the left and right squares. The one to the right was a good temperature for me and I like it hot. There is also the dry sauna which was very enjoyable - I had only been in wet saunas before and I much preferred the dry. I found everyone to be respectful of gaze, no one stared or looked at each other really - it was actually almost to the point of awkwardness where people did not acknowledge one another. Folks were fairly quiet around 3pm, but when I got back into the tubs at 5pm, after my massage, there was a bit more conversation. A fair amount of people came in pairs/couples, though there were just as many there solo. Overall I found the area to be slightly crowded - maybe 15 people at one time, where I think maybe 12 would have been more comfortable. Though I understand the facility needs to meet a certain capacity to be profitable. There is one clock outside and another inside to help you monitor your time - no other signals when your time is up so it's mostly the honor system. I think another clock outside would be helpful. When I was there, it seems like those going nude were actually in the minority and more folks chose to wear a bathing suit. To me, the space felt very body positive to people of all sizes, ages, and genders. I also opted for a massage during my visit. I did a 60-minute massage with practitioner Vickie. I booked her from their masseuses because her blurb on the website indicated she was body-positive. She was right on time meeting me near the locker room, offering me a robe, and taking me back to the massage room which was dimly lit, smelled good, with lots of decorations and typical calming music. She checked in with my goals for the hour and then got to work. During the massage, I could hear some noise from the hallway but nothing excessive. I really enjoyed her massage all throughout - good pressure with check-ins, working out knots in some areas but still going for relaxation as the main goal, every part of the body got some love. I'd definitely recommend her. After all is said and done, grab your stuff from your locker, and head out, hopefully more rested and relaxed. Im a member now woohoo. Very rewarding every time I leave here I feel so refreshed to take on the world.... I recommend a soak + massage, bring water and save a few dollars and BYOT bring your own towel. You can book last minute if you want and see how many people are booked during your time slot. Go off hours if you want to be there with 2 or 3 people... sometimes you can get in there by yourself otherwise the usual 6 to 10 feels fine. I think it's 12 humans max per hour. No aliens as far as I can tell haha Bring water but they have it there as well. One towel to sit on in the sauna helps but it's not necessary though I like a small towel to wipe off and reserve my main towel for the last shower. I've had two different people on the massage aspect which they were both great so I'm assuming you'll be pleased with anyone. read more

Poor Appointment Handling and Customer Service. I booked a massage on Sept 2nd via phone and received a reminder and confirmation text for my appointment on Sept 3. I recieved a callback earlier the day of that appointment that it was canceled due to practitioner not available. I rescheduled with the person on the phone for following day at 430pm. I never received a text reminder or confirmation for new appointment which promoted me to call and check. When I called, I was told I had an appointment at 130pm with a different practitioner- something I never booked and couldn't attend. The person I spoke with was condescending and made it seem like the mistake was mine. There was no empathy shown for the inconvenience or the mix up. I had to send proof of my original confirmation and showing that I did not receive any confirmation for the 130pm before receiving a voicemail saying I wouldn't be charged for today's appointment. This was clearly an error on their part, I feel the situation could have been handled with more accountability. After this experience , I will go elsewhere where my business is more respected. read more

Had a wonderful 90 minute massage with Brittany today. I saw that Willamette Week selected them last year for best massage in PDX so I figured I'd try them out. And I'm so glad I did! Office staff only review: Amending a review I left yesterday- I just had a receptionist there go the extra mile for me. I had to late cancel a massage and soak for today because my young kids are unexpectedly both home sick. The person who left me a voicemail waived the late cancellation fee and was very kind in their demeanor over the phone. I really appreciate it and I will reschedule. (FWIW- the prior review that I deleted spoke of the displeasing attitude by the person on the phone yesterday; after, a manager called me to try to remedy the situation). I've always been a fan of this place. The staff creates an atmosphere of healing and calm I wish they had a steam room as well and a cold plunge. In the past they had these two really kind ladies that used run things, they always made you feel as right as rain. But some of the new rules they have put in place make it hard to relax, for one you are forbidden from having conversations with other which seems exceedingly weird considering the type of customers, they attract create a very high frequency, spiritually meditative, and mental health positive type of community. When I asked about this rule, they said something about the new administration that was the way to go. I would encourage them to reconsider this other than that this place is fantastic. read more

Figured he's from Sweden and is used to being naked in the sauna lol The atmosphere was very zen unlike the Korean spas we used to go. I figured the concept should be about the same. I was looking for a sauna last minute and was able to find a convenient soak time here. All the staff are super friendly and helpful. I appreciated all of the guidelines to help make the safe more comfortable. The facilities have all that you need in terms of showers, bathrooms, and a locker room. It felt a little close quarters at times since it doesn't take too many folks to make the hall feel a bit crowded. All of the clients were very respectful though. I had originally planned to mix up some hot tubs time with the sauna, but the hot tub seemed pretty full. The sauna was perfectly filled with heat and quiet. I loved taking my cold "plunges" just standing in the rain. It was just what I needed today, and I will happily come back! read more

To me it feels like the owner is attempting to backpedal what they had said. Regardless of whether or it the conversation was taken out of context, as they claim, there was no reason whatsoever that the sexual orientation of the people complaining should have been brought up unless sexual orientation was an issue. I was so excited when I found out about the men's only night at Common Ground Wellness center. Finally there was a place that I could go and feel comfortable. The strict no contact/sexual activity policy was an absolute blessing and allowed me to feel a far greater sense of safety than anywhere else I had been. Unfortunately, due to homophobic straight men complaining about how many queer patrons, they have decided to cancel the men's night. Given that they areas have strict policies regarding contact, the sexual orientation of the patrons should be irrelevant. However, common ground has decided to side with homophobia. read more

With more then enough body issues I deal with, I was excited but nervous about being in a clothing-optional coed space (the clothing optional being the challenge). It could not have been a more lovely experience. They have a strict code of conduct that was followed by all on the day we visited. Nobody was checking people out or starting weird conversations. It was just what I hoped for--a group of likeminded folks just finding relaxation without the need for wet bathing suits. Some people were reading a book in the sauna. Some were soaking in the hot tub. Ages ranged from 20s to 60s? during our time there. This whole atmosphere is a magic trick to pull off. It's an AMAZING PLACE. I was just turned away from my weeks ago scheduled massage appointment because the Front Desk at Common Ground had failed to input my information correctly. I am a lifetime member there and this was VERY disappointing when I had a much needed massage for a shoulder injury scheduled with my regular therapist. No, I didn't want to wait more than an hour for another therapist. Your thin apology was weak. I have only wonderful things to say about the massage therapist, the best I've ever had. Yesssssss. My job is stressful, and my body is almost always in a state of recovery from some minor injury or another. As such, I love places like this. Common ground has a dry sauna and a large saltwater soaking pool. They have a communal shower, dressing room, and an outside shower as well. They have nice plants around, and benches to cool off on. They also have a massage wing, which I haven't had the pleasure of experiencing yet. NOTE: It's clothing-optional, and in the 3 times I've been there, I've never seen a shred of clothing on anyone. People politely avert their eyes, keep conversation to a minimum, and the atmosphere is very quiet and relaxed. I will go back again and again. Pro-tips: bring a towel, they charge for those. Sorry to say they no longer offer the free birthday hour soak. I even called previously to make the appt and told the person on the phone it was my birthday. While they were nice, they didn't mention the cost or that they no longer offered a free hour. I assumed because they didn't mention the cost that meant they understood it would be free. I should have asked, true, but I had been here before and they did give me the free hour then though at the time I was also booking a massage too so maybe they only do it if you're paying? I would have made other plans had I known. Still a nice place but, that issue, and the front counter person, were frustrating. They didn't ask if I'd been there before or asked if I wanted any explanation of how things worked (this is important later). Luckily for them I had been there before. Once I paid, I remember I'd walked there and asked if they still honored the punch cards (if you walk or bike). The person said yeah, if you walked or biked here. I had a backpack, sunglasses, and large sun hat on but did have tell them twice that yeah, I walked here. Maybe it was a misunderstanding but it felt like they didn't believe me. They punched my card and commented the punches done previously looked a little odd? I looked at them not seeing anything strange but felt I had to say, well I didn't do the punches on the card so... anyway, I headed back to the spa area and I wear prescription glasses to see. Before I even got to the back, the counter person called out I couldn't wear them. I would have taken them off at the lockers as soon as I made the walk but I had to stop awkwardly in the foyer with my backpack and big hat and fish out my regular glasses. The walkway is small so it was a little embarrassing. While I was in the locker area, there was a sweet older lady having trouble with the lockers. She had no idea how to work them and it was like no one had explained it to her. Having worked in retail and customer service a long time and generally trying to be a decent human, I helped of course, but then I remembered the front counter person made no effort to ask if I'd been there before nor tried to explain anything about the place so the lady's situation was the possibly the same? On the way out, the same counter person made myself and two entering people wait while they finished what looked like a casual conversation with another employee. My previous experiences here were great so I wasn't expecting all of this and I honestly wasn't impressed. For a birthday experience it wasn't great and even though I live in the area close enough to walk, next time I'll probably make the trip down to Everette house instead. read more

When I told my friends I was taking a trip to Portland, every other person told me I should under no circumstances miss CGWC. And man were they right! This is such a nice, warm and welcoming place! It started with a pleasant phone call to get an appointment. Then the mister and I took the bus (yay public transportation, yay Portland) to almost right in front of their door. We were greeted warmly and everything was explained to us. We were shown around the changing and shower area as well as the sauna and dipping pool. Everything is well maintained, clean and super relaxing. And then we DID relax. And sweated and relaxed some more. I really miss something like this in the Bay Area (let me know if I am just badly informed!). Just a low key place where you can hang out naked and sweat with your significant other, no matter which gender they are... or not are. Not being stared at, not being judged. Just friendly co-habitation, ommmmm! We were only there for an hour or two, but man, this was the most relaxing part of our entire vacation. I love this place. I never thought I would be inclined to come back regularly, especially not alone, but it's so hard not to. The soaks are very affordable considering prices elsewhere in Portland. As someone on the more anxious side, I like the rules to avert your gaze and not speak to anyone you don't know. And even though the hot tub area is small and everyone is nude around you, it doesn't feel uncomfortable to stay in a bathing suit here. It's an overall relaxing, safe environment. If I lived closer, I would probably be here every day. I also had a great massage here with Jonathan on one particularly hard day for me. I was in a car accident last year and still have back pain from it. I told Johnathan this, and he was very attentive and kind about it before the service. Then he gave me a massage unlike any other that was more joint and movement focused with some pressure in key areas. He fixed an ankle problem I've had for years and helped relieve my knee impingement. Things I did not even come into the service for but left amazed. My main area of focus was my back pain and I left there feeling like he took 20 lbs off of my shoulders. I felt weightless. I even teared up walking to the front desk, and he said to me, "sometimes you forget what it feels like to be without pain." Yes, you do forget. Let Johnathan remind you what that's like. It's a sexist business. I'm all for equality but that means equality. They canceled the mens night and kept the women's night. They are aggressively active in enforcing any no talking for men but women can chat basically as loud as they wish. Guys if you're looking for a place to feel uncomfortable and out of place go here. This is far from a welcoming safe space for everyone and less than a "common ground" It makes for a small boring space to be honest. One small hot tub and a small sauna. No one talks even slightly, everyone oddly averts their gaze even to new faces (which is super unnatural), no one is supposed to chat with any strangers. Not worth 20.00 per hour or even 10.00 I've been to a lot of clothing optional spaces, some where refreshments are served and at here are communal spaces for discourse and being human in community. You will feel more connected to your fellow human and leave with a burst of self confidence and love for your self and body. Years of negative body issues were erased in one night. I think the USA could use more places like this. The staff are friendly and helpful, and (most) fellow patrons are respectful. I have had only one bad experience with groups of people disregarding silent hour along with blatant touching and hugging in the tub. Respecting the rules makes it much more comfortable for everyone not included in your group. I would like the staff to enforce these rules more strictly but don't have a realistic solution. Bring an open mind, and leave the clothes at home. Or wear a suit, nobody cares. Just be comfortable being yourself and own it! read more

The massage therapists I've seen (Jeffery and Jonathan) have each been very professional and good at their craft. The hot tub is clean and the clientele there are generally pretty chill so there's not a lot of awkwardness around the nudity. A tranquil oasis in a residential neighborhood. Sauna and steam room are clean as are the showers. Staff is very friendly and some people swear by the masseuse services. They offer a decent retail section, but wish there were more varied food and drink offerings. The price points - whether drop in or membership - are value. Clothing optional venues seem to attract that single 55+ dude regular that likes to chat and, yes, subtly stare. I've never witnessed any overt odd behavior, but am convinced many position themselves in the sauna so as to get a great viewing angle. Moreover, they seem to take just a little extra time drying off out in the open. You know, that stand-up spread eagle while stretching arms in a mini-aerobic pose. Some have no idea what I'm talking about, but I'm guessing some do. I can see why some women opt for the female-only hours. I was not hip to the dress code, so I was one of THOSE people, soaking in a bathing costume. Still, I enjoyed my first visit at Common Ground Wellness Center. I went with a girlfriend, who lives in Portland, and we were very impressed with the facilities (The showers rustic, but nice. The changing room small, but cozy). It was a rainy night with thunder and lightning when we went, so it was a very dramatic evening soak. Nothing quite like staring up at the open night sky to see flashes of light and hear claps of thunder, all while surrounded by nude bathers. Yeah, except for us. We were the only ones prudishly insisting on wearing our suits. The best part of the evening was the silent bell, signaling it was time for serenity and quietude. For some reason, it had me in giggles. This place is ripe for parody. I half expected this establishment to be featured in the next season of Portlandia. It kinda calls out for it, really. Go. Be prepared for co-ed nudity. Be prepared for the outdoor elements. And be prepared to relax and enjoy the weirdness of Portland. That's why you're here, right? read more
