This place is amazing! Even as place to relax, wind down, and clear toxins from your body in the float tank. However, I booked a float to help battle the side effects from chemotherapy. I have stage IV colon cancer. Because of this I do chemo treatments every other week and this will be on going (at a year and a half so far). I have done two floats so far and I was not disappointed! The salt soak relieved my aching muscles, my recovery time was cut in half, and the chance to meditate while floating in the pod cleared my mind of worries and helps to give me the positive outlook I need to fight my disease. Sheesh. So this was a gift from my gal pal. 90 minute float from Groupon. Now when I tried to make a reservation the night before my birthday online, I couldn't apply my Groupon. There was nothing I could do to reserve a noon spot. I called and left a message, no call back. I emailed, no email back. The time slot was perfect as I had my bday planned out. I arrived 10 minutes before they opened. After 20 minutes from when they had posted they are open, still no open sign light up, and amazingly the 3 spots for noon were 'booked' all the sudden, but no one came to the door when I knocked either the 3 different times. When I did finally get a hold of someone they put me down for a 2pm time slot. Now I had to waste 2 hours. I went and got some food which I shouldn't have and then got to my appointment. They still were not ready when I arrived, something about the temperature not being there yet. I finally get to my pod and get in my pod. The water was not warm. It was colder than warm. I have floated before and it was nice. This was not. I would not go back, this was I felt rushed to accommodate instead of giving me an amazing experience. I have chronic pain and get a lot of bodywork, but nothing compares to floating. I don't even need the full 90 min to reap the benefits.... sometimes I only have enough time or patience to do 60 min or less and it's mind blowing how much better I feel. Located in a 2 story house behind the Whole Bowl. Kudos for a Private parking lot for customers! Dillian was nice and went over what's to expect in the soak baths. But when you first arrive you get to soak your feet in a 100f degree foot bath just inside the doors. It's a community bath for up to 4 people. Sign a waiver and relax until your room is cleaned and ready for you. Drink some decaffeinated tea or water while you wait. Shower before you get in and after you come out to rid of the 1000 lbs of Epsom salt. It was a cool experience and a lovely gift. They even have membership deals available. I left relaxed and hope to try it again. Make sure you get in a meal an hour before your appt so your tummy isn't growling and waking you up. I could also hear sirens faintly go by but the cool silicon ear plugs kept my ears dry. read more

I feel very comfortable being in Float Shoppe. Every time I leave Float Shoppe I feel an overwhelming sense of peace. This place was in an old home in a neighborhood. Originally that's a little weird but you get over it. It's very hippie "Portland weird" inside. You decide if that's good or bad! :) Bery good service over phone and front desk. They give you great advice and explain rules for new comers as what to expect. Clean room, clean float tank, clean shower (old building/shower/etc, but clean). Float experience was very peaceful you do end up sorta weightless which can feel good when you weigh 200 lbs against gravity lol! Seriously though stress relieving and 90 min was a great amount of time to finally get to a good deep relaxation but not so long that you start to feel annoyed or claustrophobic or just antzy. Although if you are someone with ADHD (my sister who went) you may get out early because you just can't be calm like that for THAt long. I recommend floating to anyone in need of relieving anxiety and/or chronic pain. I experienced relief of both and still felt quite good a week after! If the tank was given a better wipe-down of the interior pod, this would likely have been a 5 star review. I don't know how often staff get inside to clean these tanks. I would have liked the water warmer, but maybe this is by request. I run colder than most. Remember to bring a hairbrush and deodorant if you need these. I am glad the rooms have their own showers. My daughter had on her bucket list trying a float shop so this was her opportunity to try it. The price seemed right at $59 for a 90 minute float, which is the standard length of time. They also offer massages here at this location on the main drag in Northwest Portland . My daughter's appointment started at 6 PM and she got finished around eight after taking a shower. She said that it was very enjoyable but she got a little cool at the end and thought it could've been better at just one hour. She was happy she did it and she slept very well after the nice relaxing soak. The employee Lisa, That checked us in was very friendly and warm and she showed me the pods where you can choose to soak or you can choose an open air tank. I don't think I'd be comfortable being inside of a pod! My daughter chose to be in the tank for the first time, which is what Lisa recommended. I enjoyed sitting in the waiting room and soaking my feet in the warm foot tub. So if you come along with someone and just want to wait, it is a very relaxing and serene place they provide four varieties of loose herbal teas and they have reading material and even coloring books. It's important to note here that floatation tanks originated on the premise of Sensory Deprivation Tanks which are tanks filled with approximately 800 to 1000 lbs. of Epsom salt, have a water temperature of exactly 98.6, and are completely dark inside. This gives the user the ability to close off all the senses and allow the salt to soak into the muscles. This place was a big disappointment. The water was so cool I had shivers, I could hear outside noise, and it wasn't total darkness. Wow! What an experience! I'm not going to lie, I had some fears about float tanks having never experienced it (googled my way to some blogs about claustrophobic panic attacks, yeast infections, stinging skin). My husband surprised me with a self care afternoon in my day off and prepaid for a 90 minute float followed by a 90 minute massage. The process of purchasing and booking so so professional and smooth from start to finish. Plenty of parking in the lot in front when I arrived which was so nice. The woman at the front desk was so kind, professional and personable and made me feel comfortable right away. The foot soak while you wait was wonderful and the tea they gave me was delicious. Everything about the soak was thoroughly explained to me. I got in expecting stinging skin or a reaction and experienced none of that. I also tend to be a claustrophobic person and did not experience that either. I won't say I went into a meditative state but it was relaxing and so nice to have complete quiet and an absence of gravity weighing on me. The massage that followed with Zachary was one of the best I've had. Highly recommend him, he is a bodywork genius. My first float...and it won't be my last! This activity is not going to be for everyone ... but try it once! Go in with an open mind and be excited to hopefully discover another level of relaxation. **Pre-Arrival** The website does a really great job preparing you in terms of what to bring, what floating is like, and where to park. So read it. I greatly appreciate the warning online about the driveway being steep for some cars and had made up my mind to find street parking to avoid scraping the bottom of my car. I was running late and needed to find parking ASAP so I decided to use their parking lot and risk it. FYI my Toyota Prius didn't have any problem clearing the driveway when pulling in and exiting. **Pre-Float** They suggest online that you come early and relax by soaking your feet. I was running a bit late but two people were there taking advantage of this option. The guy at the front desk did a wonderful job going over expectations of what floating will be like, tips, and if we had any questions. A few highlights include the option to use ear plugs (I did) and there's also a head pillow you can use. While you head will float, he says it may take a few floats for newbies to relax their neck muscles. **Floating** I reserved the Infinity Tank because I didn't want to be enclosed for my first experience. This option would be good for people who may be afraid of the dark because there's a lamp in the room and you are able to turn on/off with a button in the tub - you could float with a dim light on if desired. **Post-Float** They play music to signal the end of your float experience - 90 mins. This had nothing to do with them, but I personally felt rushed as I don't like making people wait as in the next floater. This is quite an interesting place to come and escape the hustle of modern life if not but for an hour or two. I came in after I booked an appointment through Groupon just the night before. I came into the business, which is in an older home on NW 23rd avenue in Portland. I was greeted by Jennifer, she took the time to introduce what the basic premise of the business was, offered me some tea, and a hot foot bath. I came in a bit early just to get a feel for the place and was satisfied by the gentle music (of course in a place like this you wouldn't expect death metal or anything), a soothing atmosphere, and what seems to be a very naturopathic approach to relieving stress. After a short time Jennifer took me to my float pool, the "Infinity" pool. She explained how everything worked and where everything was. After the rinsing shower, I spent the next 90 minutes in complete darkness floating in a soothing Epsom bath. I'm composing this review three hours after my "float". I'm just chilled...relaxed...even after what would be typically a maddening "fight" in traffic coming home from the float experience. The point of all this? Just chill, let go, and contemplate. I was so excited about my first visit to the Float Shoppe! I had enjoyed floating in the past. I booked a float and a massage as an early birthday present to myself. I left with a few gifts I didn't like in the form of bruises on both arms primarily around my elbows. It's three days later and I'm still very tender in several spots. The injuries are a result of the float. Sadly this float experience was not great because of the particular tank I had, the Floatarium. I can imagine if I had one of the other tanks I would have been a lot more satisfied and less bruised after my float. The massage was pretty awesome so I have to give them at least three stars. I was the very first Float Shoppe customer the new LMT Kyle worked on. He was excellent and I sure hope he was able to pocket the entire $20 tip I left as no one else there deserved a penny of a tip as they should have discouraged me to do a float in the Floatarium tank, or at the very least taught me how to open and shut the lid without injury. This is the description of the tank from the website: "The Floatarium float tank offers a particularly spacious float and is often a favorite among experienced float tank enthusiasts. The lid opens manually and there is not an option for light on the inside. As soon as you close the door, the float tank is entirely dark." This is what it really should say: "The Floatarium float tank is not for inexperienced floaters and is only a favorite among experienced, very strong, float tank enthusiasts. It offers a spacious float. The lid requires that the floater have a lot of upper body strength to open manually. The hydraulic hinges do not activate until the lid has been pushed upwards almost the entire way, several feet above you, you will have to stand while holding the door and try not to slip and fall. The hinges also do not help when lowering the lid so be very careful as the lid will slam down on you the last few feet." So this is what I experienced: Lovely greeting by the staff who offered water or tea plus paperwork to complete, and then briefly talked about the float experience. Another staff person took me upstairs to the float room. She showed me the shower, a table that had earplugs, a wash cloth, a spray bottle with clean water and a head float. I asked if there were any tricks for using the tank and she mentioned that when she had floated in this particular tank she noticed the lid did close quickly once it was a few inches away from being completely closed. That was it. She left, I stripped and showered and easily stepped into the tank being careful not to slip as the epsom salts make the tank super slippery. I lowered myself into the tank only to realize that I could not reach the handle on the lid unless I was standing, so up I went. It was a bit awkward to settle down while pulling the lid shut and I was really startled when the lid slammed closed. Taking a few extra deep breaths I did my best to relax - it took a bit of extra effort to finally feel relaxed due to the lid shutting so swiftly. About halfway through my float I wanted to spritz my face with the clean water, As you can imagine, I was a bit disturbed to learn I was practically trapped. Why? Well my body was like a limp overcooked noodle but I needed strength to open the lid. Plus there is no way to get any traction so I had to wedge myself sideways and press my body into an uncomfortable position to gain any sort of traction in order to get the lid to open even a few inches. At this point the hydraulic hinges should have begun to help, but that was not the case. I had to pause, straining against the lid, just to keep it open a few inches because it wanted to slam shut again. After getting the lid to stay open - the only positions are all of the way open or all of the way shut - I spritzed my face and settled back down, this time I did not close the lid. I continued my float but it really was quite disappointing as now any exposed skin was chilled and even with earplugs I could hear people in the building and a few random sounds from outside. When the music began to play I was relieved, I stepped out of the tank and into the shower, washed off, toweled dry, put on the robe they provided and opened the door to my room. I had a feeling I was supposed to go back down to the waiting area until my massage but I didn't feel comfortable doing that, the waiting room isn't the kind of place you want to hang out in after floating when you have a massage coming next. I noticed the massage room and knew the LMT was a man named Kyle. Sure enough I noticed him in the hallway and asked If I could go directly into the massage room, he welcomed me to go directly in without going back downstairs. The rest of my experience was truly 5 stars. If I ever go back it will be for a massage with Kyle, otherwise I will go back to the place on the other side of the river where I enjoyed a much better, safer, and bruise free float experience read more

However, we really did not know what to expect. From the moment I scheduled the appointments with Abe on the phone, I could tell this place was better than what I saw and read on the website. Their customer service is hands down amazing!! Abe was so courteous, kind and exceeded my expectations as a new, curious and excited customer through even the phone. Working as a scheduler in the dental field, I know what it's like to talk to someone with a bad attitude and make you question the company. Well, he represented the company, very well and that's hard to do now a days when we are living in a fast placed society. He took his time and did not make me feel rushed. That's what I love about this place. We did not feel rushed and that's what they pride themselves in. This place is chill af. Staff members are super friendly and thoroughly explain the process and what to expect. You start off with a foot soak and tea and then are escorted to a private room where you begin your 90-minute float. The float tanks and facilities are clean and easy to use. The float itself was relaxing and while some people feel that time goes by slowly, I personally had an opposite reaction. I actually didn't feel that time went by slowly at all. I ended up falling asleep for about an hour of it (which is perfectly safe to do). Afterwards, there is a shower (with shampoo/body wash etc.) in the room for you to wash up. You are welcome to chill downstairs after your float for as long as you need and no one will try to rush you. All you have to bring is yourself and an open mind. My experience at The Float Shoppe was far better than I expected it to be. I've never floated before but have always been intrigued (at least since I've first found out about it last year). I took advantage of a Groupon offering so I can have my first experience. I will share what was helpful for me for anyone that's seriously considering this: - Get there early - I arrived about 40 minutes before my session was to begin. I wanted enough time to decompress from the day (my appointment was in the late evening), fill out paperwork and just converse with the owners/staff. I had enough time to really relax, read about floating and ask questions. The staff is extremely friendly and that was helpful for me. - Don't get water in your eyes. You will regret it. - Try to float without the earplugs. - Don't worry about not waking up. I had this fear that I would "over float" and go over my time limit. There is soft music that automatically turns on when your time is up. Honestly, it scared the living daylights out of me even though it was supposed to be soothing. I've been in isolation for so long I almost forgot what music sounded like - I thought I was in another astroplane. It took about 30 seconds for me to get it. - Bring shampoo & conditioner - They do offer shampoo and conditioner but if you have hair like mine (curly, kinky, thick and long), it will laugh at what they have. I did use their shampoo but thankfully I did bring my conditioner which was thick, heavy and moisturizing. Had I used theirs, I would have ended us using the entire bottle and then some or else I would not have gotten a comb through my hair. My hair was pretty dry and almost damaged for a few days post float. I think it was from the salt and length of time I was in the water. I ended up using a clarifying/chelating swimmers shampoo that removes build-up, metals and salt. My hair finally got back to life. I'm sure the majority of the clientele won't have this issue, but if you have hair like mine, you've been warned! read more

This place is INCREDIBLE! We were in town for a foodie/wine tasting weekend and my boyfriend was intent on figuring out a way to make a type A personality relax. He booked us for a 90 minute float and 90 minute massage afterward. I thought it was going to be a bit too new agey for me but I actually got alot out of it. When you first arrive, you sit in these comfy chairs and put your feet in a fountain of water with other people. The receiptionst comes over and explains the process and how to get to the relaxation state the quickest way. All her tips by the way, were spot on. It took about 15 minutes for your brain to turn off and then you have the rest of the time to reflect on life. You float in this big egg looking thing and the water is at body temperature. You are in a private room with a shower. The best part about this visit though was the massage. My boyfriend had Winter as the masseuse and I had her partner Sylvia (I think that was her name). She was incredible. She performed a massage called structural body work. She actually worked out alot of the problems I was having in my legs and got blood flowing back in those places where I had tissue build up. I felt great for days afterward. She was really knowledgable in many different forms of massage and was great in explaining what happens inside your body that causes these problems. It was the best massage I have ever had. This was my first float, and it was pretty great! The staff is nice and informative, which is good for first timers. You start with a foot soak, and a run down of what to expect. After you're shown to your room, you disrobe, get into your float pod, and relax. You literally can't see, feel, or hear anything. It's amazing. I would recommend wearing the earplugs. I have been here once. It was my first ever float. It was..... okay I guess. Maybe floating is just not for me. I was completely board out of my mind after about 20 minutes. I was in a tank that was completely dark and salt water kept getting in my eyes. Every time this would happen, I would have to fumble my way to the door and fumble my hands around for the water to wash out my eyes. It wouldn't stop happening...... and I eventually got out before my 60 minutes was over. To be fair they did warned me about getting the water in my eyes, so I knew it might happen. But that didn't make it sting any less. Price you pay I suppose. My concern with this place is the cleanliness. When I got there, there was about a 15 minute wait because my "pod" was currently in use. I saw the customer before me eventually come down the stairs and then about 10 min later my pod was ready for me. Ten minutes? That's all it takes between customers? So am I using the same water they just used? Because it is really warm and all the salt is dissolved....... This made me feel uneasy. I am not saying they didn't clean it, but I just feel there is no way a thorough cleaning of the pod and water could have been done in that short amount of time. My friend (in a pod down the hall) complained about hair in her pod. I did not experience hair myself, but the concern is there...... On a positive note, the staff was very friendly. This place does offer other services than just floats. I believe they have massage and maybe a few other things as well. All in all....... I am not left with a desire to float again. While waiting for our appointment we soaked our feet in a foot bath. My son who just came back from a deployment n the Middle East said just the foot bath made him feel relaxed. This was my first floating experience, and I loved it! I arrived early and got to soak my feet while sipping tea. What a lovely bonus! The woman at the front desk was very welcoming and did a great job preparing me for my first float-- telling me what to expect, how to acclimate myself to sensory deprivation, and so on. I floated the infinity tank, which was a good intro experience-- it's an open air tank and didn't make me feel claustrophobic. They supplied me with a little inflatable neck pillow which did a marvelous job of supporting my neck and kept me from worrying about what would happen if I fell asleep in the water. Ear plugs were made available as well, and they did a great job of eliminating the last little bits of noise that seeped into the room once the door was shut. What a great gift it is to have 90 minutes in which nothing is demanded of you! To just float and breathe and think of nothing is the most wonderful antidote to stress. I felt genuinely renewed afterwards. I'm so glad I tried floating, and I feel lucky to have been introduced to it at such a great place. I love the Float Shoppe! Whenever I arrive at the door I feel like I'm walking into my friend's house. Everyone is so warm and welcoming, it's a joy just to hang out there. There's even tea, a comfy couch, and a heavenly foot spa to get you relaxed and ready for your float. I live in Seattle and float every time I come down to Portland, so I can only speak for the float services. Next time I go I'll have to get a massage and report back... but I'm be shocked if it wasn't amazing. Floating, massage, and now they even have a therapist on staff. I had a really amazing time at the Float Shoppe. As it was my first time floating, I was a little nervous, but Sandra and Dylan were extremely welcoming and calming. They walked me through everything to expect. If you're worried about cleanliness, they have a number of safeguards in place. The shoppe is quite clean and as a clean freak, I felt completely safe inside. I also thought the float would feel claustrophobic, and there was a momentary panic as I shut the top of the float pod (the pod looks like something you'd find in a sci fi during the era of free love). But for me this lasted only a few seconds, and I quickly settled down. I know everyone has a different experience. For me, I tried not to have any expectations and just to enjoy not *having* to think about anything for once. I went through many different states of alertness, deep relaxation, exploration and simple contentment. For me, one of the coolest parts was the experience of hearing my own blinks for the first time towards the end of the float when I was in a quite mindful state. We went yesterday and it was amazing. We got the Float Sandwich, and couldn't be happier. We surprised our girlfriend for her birthday by kidnapping her in the morning and taking her in. We were all a little nervous because we had never floated before, but it was so relaxing. The Float Sandwich is 90 minute float, 90 minute massage, 90 minute float. The staff was fantastic from the first. Melissa was great at scheduling the 3 of us in so that we would finish at same times and get to visit and soak our feet together and have tea in between appointments. Kelsey did a great job explaining to us what to expect in our float and we all really liked it. Her detailed explanation made us feel much more comfortable when we were in there. It was interesting we all felt the same way and we are all completely different personality types. When we got in our mind was going 100 miles an hour and we couldn't shut it off, and then we were just out, not really asleep, but time passed really fast. I thought it might drag, and I actually brought my kindle in case I didn't like it and wanted to get out, but that was never an issue. All of us loved our massages, in fact even though they are about 40 minutes from where we are, we all only want to go there to get a massage. Dillon was friendly and helpful and brought us a great lunch. We got there at 11:30 and did not leave until 6:00 pm, we were pampered the whole time by all the staff. We have decided this needs to become a quarterly event. Part of the excitement was we all ditched work, but the rest was all the Float Shoppe. read more
