This was my first time stopping by one of these little coffee huts and I am super impressed! I told the girl I wanted an iced latte but wasn't sure what flavor I wanted and mentioned what I typically prefer. She made a recommendation for me and it was perfect! I've stopped at this Dimond Blvd area Common Grounds location, a few times now. Service here is friendly and fast. I usually choose something from their monthly specials menu. Most recently on their June menu, I ordered a Swirl Bull, that was as aesthetically pleasing, as it was flavor and energy packed. So - I seldom am so disappointed that I post a bad review. But management needs to talk with their staff on this one. Ordered the largest vanilla latte around 11:45 am and it was $7.25. Gave her a ten dollar bill. She came back and said she couldn't give me the 75 cents because she had no quarters!!! She then hands me $2 instead of rounding down 25 cents and giving me $3! So, because you have no quarters, my coffee cost 75 cents more??? You didn't ask me if I had a quarter You didn't ask me to pay with a card. No dimes or nickels?? And on top of it, my latte tasted burnt. I planned to use the 75 cents + $1 as a tip, but that's really not the point. Won't be back. read more

I think the BEST thing are the employees at Dimond location, Tessa and Taylor! If I wanted something different they would always give me suggestions! Also the monthly drinks are fun as well and all the drinks look and taste so yummy! I definitely love the lotus with power-up lotus, it really gets me going for sure! A go-to stop on my way to work. Has all of the coffee. Drink varieties you are lookin for. Rarely more than a two-car wait and the line moves quickly. The staff is super nice. As a drive-thru stand, restroom facilities are limited to a a port-a-john. The shop sits in a large parking lot with plenty of space to turn around, etc. read more

They seem to have good mochas. Their menu photos are blurry when you try to enlarge them. It's nearly impossible to find out what they actually serve as far as cold drinks and hot drinks??? Their QR Scan Code menu doesn't work at all just brings up a website with menu buttons to click or tap but the buttons don't work. So you can't see the menu. I've never seen a coffee shop where they have no menu just some old blurry photos on Yelp and a scan code that doesn't work! If I knew what they actually served at this place I might actually go back more often! read more

Drove through with my husband to grab a quick pick-me-up for us to stay motivated while finishing unpacking (we just moved back to Alaska after 15 years). There were about 3 cars in line on either side, and we waited roughly 15 minutes before our turn at the window. My assumption was that the cars ahead of us must have ordered many drinks or complicated orders, so we did not mind being patient and waiting for our turn in line. When we got to the window, we were greeted very shortly by an overwhelmed/cranky barista and asked what we'd like. We asked to please have an iced dirty vanilla chai and a hot black americano. The drinks were made relatively quickly, but my chai had chunks of sugar/powder and coffee grinds at the bottom of the cup and my husband said his americano tasted burnt and funky (as if they hadn't used a clean portafilter when pulling his shots or didn't time the shots) (I was a barista when I was younger, so I'm familiar with some of the process it takes to build a drink). It certainly wasn't the WORST experience we've had at a coffee hut, but I wouldn't necessarily say it was one of the best either. I'm sure the girls were just very busy/stressed, so I am more than happy to give them some grace for that. I look forward to giving Common Grounds another try and hope that the next visit is less busy so we can get the full experience and receive some of the quality drinks we've heard so much about/been recommended by our local friends! I'm not a fan of Common Grounds in general to be honest. Their drinks are too sweet and their espresso is too watery for my liking. One of those places for people who like coffee that doesn't really taste like coffee. But since I had a friend visiting from out of town and this was one of the few places still open at 7:00pm, we stopped by here. I decided to order a spiced eggnog chai, which was listed as one of their holiday specials. The "spiced chai" is a misnomer as it tastes neither spiced nor like chai. It's some kind of vanilla and cinnamon flavored powder. Wish more places actually carried chai that isn't some kind of powder or concentrate. The flavor aside, the drink didn't seem that well mixed. I get that eggnog is difficult to steam which is why you have to add milk, but something just seemed off. The barista was nice enough. No complaints there. This location is in a rather inconvenient location as you can only access it going east on Dimond. If you're westbound you'll have to make a U-turn somewhere. read more

I decided to stop by here for a quick snack and drink before heading down to Potter Marsh to enjoy the sunny weather at the tail end of August. Common Grounds Espresso is a small coffee shack located on W. Dimond Blvd in front of the Dimond Greenhouse Nursery close to Arctic Blvd. The girl behind the drive-thru window was very friendly and quickly took my order. I decided to go for one of their frappes since it was warm and the temperature was close to 80 degrees. I decided to go with one of their Back To School specialty drinks called the Hall Pass (very creative) which was a 20oz. Caramel Apple Frappe with two shots of espresso. The drink tasted phenomenal with a good emphasis on the caramel and the unique mix of apples and cinnamon. This was a great way to cool down in the sun. For the snack, I ordered one of their Zucchini muffins which was local from a business down in Spenard (the same place that makes the Green Tea Muffins which I always order if a coffee shop has them). The muffin was buttery and delicious with bits of zucchini for an added crunch. What I like about this place compared to the other coffee shops are the selections of unique coffee drinks that can be made here. Some of the noticeable items they have aside from your standard lattes, mochas, and Americanos are the Heath Bar Latte, the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Mocha, and the Spiced Mexican Mocha (cinnamon flavor with a kick) as well as seasonal drinks like the Pumpkin Pie Latte, Real Egg Nog, Candy Cane, Gingerbread, and Carrot Cake. Shakes are also made here and available in Bubble Gum, Creamsicle, Cotton Candy, Strawberry Cream, and Frozen Hot Chocolate as well as smoothies like Strawberry & Banana, Mango, Orange Passion, Peach, and Red Bull (yes, a Red Bull smoothie). This place is a better alternative for me to pick up a coffee drink and getting some fresh air while studying at a local park instead of being cooped up in a coffee shop on a sunny afternoon. read more

Came here, ordered two coffees and asked for a sugar cookie. The barista made our drinks and gave us our total (which we assumed included the cost of the cookie since we had asked for the cookie before she gave us the total). We reminded her about the sugar cookie, she the proceeded to run my card, after I had signed the receipt and tipped her she told me it would be $2.25 for the cookie. Now, I have no problem paying for the cookie, but why would the barista not run the card for the whole amount?? It's terrible customer service to run someone's card and then asked them to run the card again for $2. I am highly annoyed. I won't be coming back any time soon. Been there 5 Times, only got our drinks 3/5 times. My fiancé and I order a Red Bull Italian Soda with Whipped Cream and coconut and raspberry flavor. I order a Red Bull Smoothie with the same flavor and whipped cream only. The employee used too much flavor and the drink tasted like SKIM MILK the first time. 2nd Time around, another employee was working. She messed up both drinks and gave us both red bull sodas. When informed we had the wrong drinks, she told us we had to PAY TO FIX HER MISTAKE. We clearly said our order and repeated it twice. I will never return to this place. read more

7/15/15 - Taylor made my white mocha espresso not too sweet, just like I requested, but it was her genuine, caring, pretty smile that made our experience awesome. So glad we randomly found this place to try our first drive thru coffee stand. Taylor set the standard. I wish I thought of asking for a souvenir coffee mug for this authentic Alaskan custom.
