Very poorly made coffee. I don't know how this place has such good reviews. An absolute disappointment. My mom and sister couldn't even finish their lattes. Very bland and tasted like it was drip instead of espresso. My London fog was tolerable but too sweet. The little building was cute of course and the service was fine. read more

I'm generally not the target audience for coffee stands. I'd prefer to sit down for breakfast. I always giggle when Joe Financial Adviser tells you to "cut down on those lattes" so that you can one day become a MILLIONAIRE! But, I've been having a lot of rushed mornings lately. So I've been ending up at coffee shacks. I pulled in here because it was close to work, and for pretty much no other reason. It was 10am and there were pretty husky lines on BOTH sides of the shack. "Hmmm...should I just bail?" I stuck around. The lines moved FAST. Made the "express lane" at the grocery store look putzy. As many of these espresso stands don't seem to have drip coffee (my favorite coffee is drip...black...black as Satan's heart, at night, in a black hole, with your eyes closed. That shows you how fancy I am.) I find myself instinctively ordering approximated-drip-coffee (Americano). I ordered a 16oz Americano and a breakfast burrito. They both came out FAST. And the coffee was good. The burrito was a standard grocery store burrito heated up in a microwave, but hangry beggars can't be satiated choosers. The girl working here was peppy, quick, and nice. Like the cheerleader at your high school that was friendly even to the lowly geeks. PROTRIP for the fellow DRIPPERS: I noticed a sign saying they do, in fact, have drip coffee. Not only that, it's $1. Not only that, if you bring your own mug, thermos, container, etc. it's only FIFTY CENTS! read more

Stayed in an Airbnb close by in Anchorage. My dad and I walked to the Black Bear coffee stand and hopefully didn't look foolish when we stood in line with the cars that had pulled up. We don't have these darling coffee houses on the East Coast but it was so splendid to look over their menu and speak with someone who was enthusiastic that early in the morning. The three times we walked over for coffee, the employee in the house was friendly and quick. Coffee was a bargain too! $3ish for 2 medium coffees. Also- no sales tax in AK! I gave 3 stars but it's a 3.4-star to me. Pros: - Service is great! The lady was super attentive and flexible to changes. Noted that it's a coffee-shack, so there is no place to sit! DRIVE-THRU ONLY - The shake is heavenly! - The 12-oz breakfast burrito is great -- I'm no expert to Mexican food but it was tasty from my standard. It has a nice load of cheese, potatoes, eggs and sausages. Cons: - Food are all microwaved so don't set your expectation too high. @ The ham & cheese croissant is subpar -- since it's microwaved, it's nowhere near crunchy and tastes like a Walmart croissant @ We also ordered a cinnamon roll -- it's humongous! The size of an adult's hand! But it's really plain and dry so we had to give up on it after some bites. - If you like strong/more bitter coffee, you will probably not be impressed by the latte here. I ordered a 16-oz latte and it tasted plainer than Starbucks' 16-oz blonde latte. Adding an extra shot might help. Traveling from Boston, we think it's a great place to try local coffee. Very surprised that it's possible to get a good cup of coffee out in the middle of nothing. They serve Steamdot coffee which is roasted in AK, the only possible way to serve fresh roasted coffee in a place that requires ships, dogs, and insane pilots in small planes to get goods up here from what I've been told by the locals. I wouldn't call it universally the best coffee I've experienced (Intelligentsia in Chicago gets that chip), but it was leaps and bounds better than expectations. The food is top notch, not just "for a coffee place" but was well above expectations for all things we ordered. The staff is friendly and interactive, and the prices are right. If you are in this area, this is a necessary stop. read more

Do not go here. It will ruin all other coffee huts for you. By far best in Anchorage. After frequenting this joint for weeks, I went on vacation and Starbucks was the only coffee shop in the entire state(it seemed). I asked them to recreate the always wonderful salted caramel latte that I get from Black Bear. It was.........so nasty that I IMMEDIATELY THREW IT AWAY WHILE MAKING EYE CONTACT WITH THE BARISTA. I look back and I feel bad, but technically it was your fault for making all other coffees terrible in comparison. Hard to rate this place. I stopped on a Sunday (today) around 12:45. I was on my way to an appt. The friend I was with suggested stopping here; she even offered to buy. It is not my usual policy to stop anywhere when I am short on time but...I really wanted coffee. There was only one car in front of me but two cars on the other side. I think the other vehicles were probably ordering multiple coffees (guess they didn't know I was in a hurry) but it took forever for me to get to the window. The service was very friendly. The coffee was good; I always get a vanilla latte. What I didn't get is my friend paid and gave her punch card (loyalty card) and she only got one punch for buying two coffees! Is that the way it usually is? I never use the punch cards but I assumed a punch for EACH coffee. As I said hard to rate for me. It took too long to get to the window for me to stop often. But...the service was friendly and...the coffee was good. The price was right but it isn't on my way anywhere usually so I probably won't go back. read more

The busiest coffee hut in Anchorage for a reason! We come here almost daily. We drive out of our way to get the coffee from Black Bear. Not only is the staff wonderful; remembering what we drink (2 white chocolate mocha's .. 1 with whipped cream)and always friendly and accommodating, but the coffee is fantastic. The white chocolate mocha is the best I've ever had. I'm told It's the owners original recipe. Does she know she's sitting on a gold mine??? Yum! I hear it's for sale. Potential buyers: if you want the customers this business currently has.....steady with 3-4 cars deep on both sides waiting patiently for this superior coffee....you might want to ask what it'll take to get her white chocolate mocha recipe included in the deal!
