Awesome spot to Get Your Nerd On…read more Most Louisvillians know the city owes its early existence to the river and the 24-foot drop it takes through the falls, which long forced traffic delays along the waterway. But I don't think many have ever bothered to come see the two massive locks now operating that have made river navigation nearly trivial. A couple years ago, a state-of-the-art $430 million waterfront project was completed here, with a public outdoor viewing area, which remains open during daylight hours much of the year. From the platform, you can watch the locks operate (as long as you happen to be here when a barge goes through), all for the low low price of zero dollars plus the possibility of a sunburn. Sure, it's not exactly Thunder Over Louisville, but each of the two 1200-foot locks has room for a 15-barge tow, which is the equivalent of 1050 semi trucks. And McAlpine was designated a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Like I said, Nerd Gold.

Diving had to take a back seat, and for more than a decade I missed the feeling of blowing bubbles underwater. Now that I'm finally able to focus on myself again, my wife encouraged me to get back into diving. While she'll never (unfortunately) get in the water with me, she happily supports my hobby. I visited Louisville Dive Center to see what they had to offer an old diver like me. The moment I walked into the shop, the familiar smell of chlorine mixed with neoprene brought back a flood of memories. I immediately felt like I was home. After learning they offered a refresher pool session for certified divers, I signed up. I paid my fee and impatiently counted down the days until it was time to get back in the water. When the day finally arrived, I gathered my fins, mask, and wetsuit, my other gear had been sold years ago to help pay college expenses, meh medical release from my Drs, a thing us old divers must get every year, and headed to the dive center. After checking in, I made my way to the pool. Muscle memory took over. Even after 11 years of not diving any deeper than my backyard pool, assembling the rental equipment felt completely natural. I checked my gauges, inflated my BCD, climbed into the pool, and slowly descended beneath the surface. I was home. I spent the next hour practicing my skills and eventually moved into the 35-foot section of the pool. My buoyancy control wasn't quite as effortless as I remembered, but after a few minutes it all came back. It's amazing how much your body remembers, even after all those years. Before I knew it, my air supply was getting low, and it was time to surface. That single hour underwater was one of the best experiences I've had in a very long time. The staff at Louisville Dive Center was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and encouraging. They treated this old diver with the same enthusiasm as someone earning a certification for the first time, even though I probably earned mine before many of them were born. As every diver knows, once the bug bites you again, there's no turning back. I'm already replacing my equipment and planning several dive trips. My wife will happily enjoy the beaches and shopping while I'm exactly where I belong, under the ocean, back home. If you've been away from diving for years and are thinking about getting back into it, Louisville Dive Center is the perfect place to start.

They just added 6 pickleball courts and resurfaced the basketball courts. This park also links to the Garvin Brown Preserve which is an additional walking trail with both open and wooded areas. The open areas follow the Ohio river. Great place to walk dogs.

This is a giant flat grassland designed for things such as picnics, flying kites or for animals and kids to run wild in open spaces. It always has quite a bit of people there but it is very massive. You could honestly host a very large outdoor concert here and nobody would know it wasn't meant for that. Me and my family usually spend most of our time doing the spray ground/playground or walking trails but this is still a really nice addition to the park overall. Very relaxing on a nice day for sure. And if you don't want to rough it and picnic on the ground they do have some picnic tables in the area.

This was a great little hike! There are about 5-8 parking spots at the trailhead right off the…read moreroad. It's about a 20 min walk to get to the waterfall area. There's a nice stream you can walk along and walk above the waterfall or walk a little further along and then access the pool below the waterfall. There's some descent down to the creek but it's never steep and the trail is pretty smooth. Supposedly there's a loop trail, but we only did the out and back. It's a nice little add on if you've been to Charlestown State Park and are already in the area. It's about 15 min from there.

River Crest park is a very nice addition to our small town of Mount Washington. It accompanies a…read morewonderful playground and a nice little walking trail. The walking trail is in-between a wooded area with benches and artifacts to observe. The playground features slides, swings, and other fun activities for kids. Great spot to check out for sure. Pine creek barrens is a nature conservatory or nature trail buried kind of deep into Shepherdsville…read moreKentucky about 3-4 miles off the cedar grove road exit in Shepherdsville. ***Major disclaimer I want everyone to know. Bring Tick repellent. We were with a group of 11 and no exaggeration we pulled well over a 100 ticks off us during and after the trail. We still are honestly. And I'm not sure why. The place is well kept and well paved. So you aren't trekking through high weeds or grass. Moving on, you pull into a smallish gravel parking lot and you can either go left or right. This is a 3 mile loop trail that takes you in a circle. Ten signs say it takes 2 hours approximately. However we walked slow and stopped store several pictures and tick check breaks and got it down in just under 90 minutes . It is full of pretty views of nature, flat lands, forest views, creek water, waterfalls and some really cool Rock formations. We enjoyed this walk. It really was very easy. Mainly flat and what Hills you come across were easy to climb. As mentioned it is Well paved and also well marked. I feel like there was a painted or marked tree every ten feet it seems. They also have a few benches for resting if needed. Ten whole path was pretty shaded and mainly dry. We came across a few different critters along our 3 mile walk. We seen a few snakes, interesting birds, bugs, a frog and a salamander. Evidently none of which eats ticks because if they did they would of been in food paradise Overall enjoyable and fun walk with pretty scenery. Kinda tough to find. I'd recommend following the winery signs and keeping your eyes peeled for the parking lot on the left. It been nicer if we aren't at risk of Lyme disease or rocky mountain spotted fever as there was a million ticks here that were waiting to feast it seems. It was an insane amount of ticks. I've never seen so many in my life. I wouldn't be opposed to coming back but it will not be in the spring. Maybe this will be a winter or cold weather trail for us.

The thing with the parking is it's very small so it was hard to get a spot so I wish they would expand that part it is back in pine forest community. But it's very beautiful and I highly recommend that you check it out five out of five stars
