Came in to ask some questions, mainly if it's worth fixing my old bike or if it's time to invest in a new bike. We were in the shop a quick 5-10 minutes, looking at products but waiting for someone to say hi, talk to us, just acknowledge our presence? Nothing. There were two or three guys. They were working and talking so not sure if you have to make them stop what they're doing for help. Came off as an extremely cold and unwelcoming place to be. Maybe I'm also in the wrong? Are the work spaces in the back for communal repairs or are they wok stations for employees? Either way, not a great community space. read more

I can't say enough about the Community Cycling Center. They cheerfully took my old bike to recycle, and hooked me up with the perfect used Schwinn for a very reasonable price. My guy Cooper could not have been nicer. There was none of the exclusionary bro energy you sometimes find at sports and recreation places. I felt really welcomed and part-of. Employees range from aloof to inept. Tyler in particular exhibited the "not my job - ask someone else" demeanor. Great attitude, bro! Finally got somebody to answer my question and they begrudgingly offered some help. Not sure if the workers here think they're too cool, or maybe they're depressed about something, but there's definitely a feeling of malaise when you walk in the door. The explanation of the place is within the title! It is a center of cycling gear, parts, complete & in-tact bikes (new and used!), accessories, and more; and it does benefit the community quite a bit. I understand that the CCC does hold bike repair classes and other bike maintenance courses for people to learn more about cycling and to help build "community". My husband and I both recently bought vintage Italiano bicyclettas, so we have made trips to the CCC to find time-relevant parts and accessories, and the CCC has been a great resource for that. I definitely recommend the CCC! read more

David helped me turn my 50$ bike from the internet into a comfy commuter's dream on a budget. They have the CHEAPEST used parts that I have seen across all bike shops. I got handlebars for 9$ and a tall stem for 5$. We were putting parts on and off to see what fit. I must have taken up about an hour's time there with the staff. Very knowledgeable. Spent a lot of time with me and my dumb questions. I went to other bike shops and their bike accessories were so much more expensive. This place is local, community centered and affordable. I want to start by saying that I am a relatively new biker. I likely still have the new biker smell on me. So take that into consideration as you read further. When I arrived, they seemed to be shorthanded. This was likely due to me arriving about an hour after opening and it was a warm Saturday. Neecy (I hope I spelled her name right) was so patient with my ignorance of bikes, trying best to figure out what kind of bike would be best. This was absolutely wonderful for me because other shops didn't seem to care to take the time to ask questions to help me decide on a bike that suits me. After I explained where I started (basically novice, barely making it around my cul de sac) to riding long, paved trails, she asked about my current bike: what I liked/don't like about it. I never even thought to consider how I felt about my current bike when thinking I needed to upgrade. Anyway, after getting to know my situation, she gave me some advice on bikes that might suit me and sent me on my way to their selection to see what caught my eye. What I didnt like is the next person who stepped up to help me, didn't ask the same questions and I had to start my story over. That was frustrating. He didn't seem engaged in helping me figure out what would work for me, but pointed out options that might fit my size wise and within the weight I was looking for. I tried a bike that I thought I liked, then Neecy came back to save the day. I was going to just walk out with "something" but she showed me a few other options and then showed me the one I eventually bought. She explained it's benefits based on how I intenddd to ride, the size, type of frame, tires etc and had me try it out. She made some adjustments to it and I fell in love with it. Some of the things she mentioned, I eoild not have thought of. Some new peddles, a new handlebar stem and I was ready to ride. I am so very thankful for my encounter with Neecy. I feel like I have a better understanding of bikes and that I have chosen a bike that is truly RIGHT for ME!!! It took longer than I thought it would, but then again every minute with hrr was worth it. Everyone should feel this good about a purchase! So grateful and thankful! read more

If this place wasn't a nonprofit, I'd probably give it an enthusiastic 4 stars. But considering that everything they do is in service of supporting the underserved subsections of Portland's cycling community, that pushes them up to 5 stars for me! I've came here a few times now. The first time was simply to buy some gear. The second was to get a tire repaired. The third was for a general tune-up and to have a piece replaced so that I could ride more comfortably after surgery. Each visit was quick and productive, with the volunteer staff helping me find exactly what I needed (and nothing more) while explaining WHY they were suggesting what they did. I certainly never felt upsold or pressured into spending money that I didn't want to. I like that any pieces they remove from your bike are thrown into their inventory for future repairs. It's environmentally sound and it helps make things more affordable for the communities they are working to serve. I haven't explored things like their classes or workshops, but I hope to do so soon. I went in here the other day to get a tube repaired or replaced on the tire of my bike. The service I got was exceptional, he said I needed to replace the tire as well as the tube and did it very cheap and very efficiently. I left a very happy customer. read more

He build my bike right away, even fix many things along the way, and it took him only 15 min. So I walked away happy and prepared for important day! David was working on something and I asked him a few of my questions and his expertise was off the charts. He made me feel like I was at a full service custom shop selling $5000 bikes. He predicted my needs and was diligent in helping me find the right bike and accessories. He was efficient at helping me and also helping other customers at the same time. I rode out with a bike in my price range with all the accessories I needed. The fact that it was all close to $400 was the best part. Sometimes, you get good service and move on to the next thing. Sometimes you get good service, things go awry and then you really see if this place is all that. In my case, a few weeks after getting my bike fixed I found myself taking a flying leap off the damn thing. The culprit? A loose brake pad twisted into the front wheel causing it to stop IMMEDIATELY. Ouch. Very embarassing to do that in front of, say, the WORLD. I tried riding the ole girl another few days, but finally gave up and had a co-worker drive me here a bit before closing. They took one look at the jacked up brake pad I held up and completed a full-in depth inspection on everything and anything that may have snapped/broken/been destroyed while I poked around their store. The damages (besides my pride, left finger, a whole bevy of bruises) was the front brake system, fork, bike grips and shifters. It was all covered under warranty repairs and I got my bike back less than 12 hours after dropping it off - even more spiffy than pre-crash (seriously, I am in love with the new shifters. Is that weird?). Oh, they also asked if I was okay and apologized profusely. Hey, shit happens, and they fixed it without one iota of issue. I can heal, but I have zero idea how to fix a bike. This is officially my bike shop until I bike no more. p.s. Wear your helmets, kiddos. read more

Phenomenal experience from start to finish. I am an exceedingly novice biker and new to Portland, so I needed a lot of guidance with regard to not only how to choose a bike for my needs, but also how to ride my bike safely and effectively in the city. The staff person assigned to me, Nissy, worked with me for quite a long while to ensure I got the bike that fit my lifestyle. They never made me feel rushed or tried to sell me anything I didn't need. This is in addition to them doing some one-on-one teaching of basic riding techniques while maintaining an entirely non-judgmental and, dare I say, even ENJOYABLE atmosphere. I was so grateful for their time and energy that I offered to tip them after my purchase (especially because our time together extended past their closing hours). However, they refused, insisting that I, instead, make a donation either toward the Community Cycling Center (which is non-profit), or toward other community organizations that were in need. What a lovely ethos to match my equally lovely customer service experience. I will 100% be recommending this place to all of my friends, and I look forward to making any future bike-related purchases and/or obtaining repairs here as well. Well as someone who has grown up in NEP I always try to support the businesses that have been here almost as long as I have. After today I won't be spending a DIME at this Cycling Center again (to be fair I've purchased here before and had a great experience 7 years ago) Back to current events: After waiting on the phone for 15 minutes I finally got their sales person on the line, then after describing my situation (trying to decide between a new and used bike) I was immediately told they were not interested in "window shoppers" and were too busy for my time.... I mean I get it, we're in a pandemic and things aren't as they should be; but wouldn't you think a community cycling center would be the first place to treat you like a "neighbor" .... Nope I'm sure that this is the anomaly but I could not let it slide. Next time, don't be a RICHARD and I'll spend some $$$ with you P.S. I live nearby and never had been in the shop. This was my first time in, and I wanted to make a connection. Hopefully making this my new bike shop. I got attitude right away, but blew it off. Maybe it was just a bad day. My mission was to find some shifters for converting my old Raleigh road bike into a city commuter. I was disappointed by the unreasonable prices though! Wow! More power to them if they sell used parts for those high prices. Unsure what to think about this place, but having been a customer in a shop down in SE Portland where I had been living near, I doubt I'll be back. hank you to the CCC for selling me my first bike in Portland. Her name was the Lady Hercules and she was an old dutch-style cruiser. That means she was a heavy tank of a bike with three speeds and a coaster brake, but she was cute and affordable. The CCC is a fixture and an asset to Alberta. They offer tons of community-oriented programs to get people to ride their bikes. They refurbish all of the used bikes they sell to be in good, safe, condition, and they'll throw a helmet and a lock in for cheap, thus making it a good first stop for a used bike in Portland if you're new to the bike culture here. read more

I just bought my first bike as an adult recently, and I'll admit I was totally intimidated by most bike shops in Portland... it feels like an exclusive scene to an outsider. Fate forced hand after I my front wheel caught the train tracks on 10th and Alder, and I ate it. I brought my bike to the folks at CCC. They were super welcoming and accommodating. JR and others did what they could to help minimize the financial damage while also making sure my bike was safe and road ready. I've gone back for a bell, a new saddle, and even bar ends!! CCC is a cut above the average Portland bike shop. On several occasions I have been in the shop attempting to change out a part or make an adjustment and have had staff members stop what they were doing to teach me how to do it correctly. WTF? That's- that's- thats just so...awesome! I have brought my bike into other shops for simple 15 minute repairs and have been shooed away and told I would have to wait two to three weeks. At CCC they have always looked at and repaired my bike the same/next day (usually with 45 minutes of dropping it off). The shop is unpretentious, informative, and has the lowest hourly labor rate I have seen in Portland. 9/28/07 Update: Still my favorite bike shop. Dave C fixed my bike the same day I brought it in (again), plus he adjusted my drop bars into a more comfortable angle. Thanks bro. read more

Oh, the employees are dolls! Enter clueless bike rider, deer in head lights. I needed a whole new wheel for my bike, and how to get that started was beyond me. Moments afters entering I was scooped up by a friendly employee. For 10 extra dollars and 15 mins of my time my wheel was assembled and put back on my bike. During my brief wait time I was able to check out all the used items/parts they had for sale. To be honest I have no frame of reference for this however I appreciate that they had such a big selection of used parts - who doesn't love bargains. They also have some nice used bikes! Having heard rumors of a certain pretentiousness that can be present at bike shops I was weary to go in knowing absolutely nothing. The employee was nothing but helpful and informative, they didn't make me feel like a idiot. He helped me pick the best wheel, installed the lights I purchases, and even helped me get my bike back into my car. I could not have been more pleased with the service. This is not the closest bike shop to my house, in fact it's pretty far. But I plan to continue going here for all my bike needs. read more

CCC has to win the "feel good" bike shop award. Their community work is pervasive and their service is low-key, competent, inexpensive and friendly. I am also a fan of The Bike Gallery, a full service, full price, full inventory kind of shop but, this review is for the other end of the spectrum. For many years I would buy a new, low-end Bike for commuting and ride the hell out of it. After about 3 years the spokes start breaking, chain needs replacing and, rather than buying new wheels etc., I buy a new, low-end Bike because they've been cheaper than new wheels, etc. Recently though, they've been making the components SO cheap on the low-end bikes that they haven't been lasting even two years. So, I took one of my old frames into CCC and went for the rebuild with better quality components. They went over the whole bike, offering suggestions on what could/should be replaced, discussed the pros and cons of spending more here, not replacing this and that part. No condescension, no flashy sales pitch. Nice! I left knowing the bill would be what I would've paid for last years bottom-end bike on sale and that I would have a much more reliable bike. They did a great job and they get my 5 star review! read more

I bought 2 recycled Bikes & had them custom-outfitted here, to be more comfortable for riders with custom challenges. Great service and the Bikes were only about $65, with new parts. So proud of all you who make this place possible! Former Director Brian Lacy did a great thing when he got this place started. He also was a prime-mover in restoring and giving away hundreds of Bikes in Portland's Bikes for the Homeless Program, that got international Press as the Yellow Bike Program. Brian was already great at working with the media, and because they were helping poor people and kids, I did a ninja Grant Development training workshop so some of dedicated Volunteers, like teachers, could really make a difference. Many repair bikes or lead rides. ..you can too! Bus 8 and 72 take you there. Buses all carry 2 bikes. Side streets are safer than Alberta, btw. Back in the day, I was quite a cyclist. Seriously, I was a road and mountain bike riding maniac. I built my own bikes. I had the most awesome bike mechanic's set-up in my garage. I loved riding bikes and tinkering with them, but things changed. Divorce. High-powered corporate job. Blah, blah. I haven't been on a bike since probably 1995. Well, the other day, I was walking down the street and saw an old bike at a yard sale. It was a Gary Fisher frame and made me nostalgic for my long ago cycling days. So, I bought it. Unfortunately, it's all beat to heck. Headset loose. Rear shifter doesn't work. Cables rusty and worn. I was also getting nostalgic for my old tools. Clearly, I was not going to be able to make the thing ride-able on my own--not with a pair of pliers and a crescent wrench. I walk by Community Cycling Center everyday on my way home from work. They have lots of old, refurbished bikes for sale out on the sidewalk. Certainly, they would be able to fix up my fixer-upper. I was greeted my a very nice, friendly mechanic in the service area. He told me exactly what my options were for getting the bike back in riding shape with a fair estimate that was right in my price range. I didn't get any bike snob attitude, and I can't wait to get my bike back next week. I'm actually quite excited about getting back in the saddle. This is a great cycling shop. Seems like a great place to get your bike worked on - I will know for sure shortly, as I'm planning on buying a bike that needs a little work, and plan on taking it here to get fixed. Their selection of bikes for sale is not so great, and while a lot of the bikes are cheap (and commensurately crappy and/or old), I actually thought some of their bikes seemed overpriced for what they were. A lowly (albeit fairly recent model) Cannondale mountain bike with no suspension fork and mediocre components was $425, which seemed a little steep, because it couldn't have retailed new for more than $600. It is a non-profit and all, and it's not like they're gouging, but at the same time I'm not going to buy a bike from them. read more

The Community Cycling Center can be a useful resource for when you are in need of used parts. They arguably have the best selection in the Portland area and one would be behooved to check them out during a new or vintage build. I've been a customer for only about a year but unfortunately the service has been mightily hit-and-miss. There is great variation in the personalities encountered there, and by extension, your experiences may vary greatly. Prices too, I've seen fluctuate greatly without explanation or rationale. I find the services offered to be on the expensive side, and the level of service, just mediocre. I recommend City Bikes for mechanics and hands-on service. Something important to me is customer appreciation. I don't get the sense that CCC shares this opinion. Relative to pricing used items, their rationale often seems to be their own experience buying the item (at some past time, who knows where...). Yes, this is what passes for expertise here. They often seem more interested in their egos than their shop. The prices of used parts have been steadily increasing here. Don't be surprised if someone points to eBay or what they paid for something six months ago, as justifications. There are some great folks working at CCC, undoubtedly, and some that are definately not so friendly. It is "hit-and-miss," as I said. Some will work with you, but many won't. There seems to be a lack of organization, or perception thereof, behind the counter, and I don't mean with regard to parts. Parking can be an issue at busy times, but one can usually find something within a mile. There are many better bike shops in Portland to try first. The bottom line? I recommend visiting only when one needs something crucial or finds themselves there by happenstance. read more

This was the second bike shop I visited when I moved to Portland in 2009. Mechanics at the first shop (not Community Cycling Center) made me feel bad about not knowing how to fix my bike. IN STARK CONTRAST, a mechanic at the CCC handed me a wrench and helped me make a minor adjustment. He was patient and helpful and didn't charge me a dime. I've been in dozens of time since, and have felt welcomed every time. Since then, I've come to love all the programs the CCC offers to make biking accessible to low-income and underserved populations, as well as all the support they offer to other members of the bike community.
