I need a new bike build, and after some time, I decided to go with River City Bikes (RCB). The Road Race machine I wanted built was based on an Evolve CIMA (Chinese Frame purchased on Panda Podium.cc). My build date was coming up. I dropped the parts off early, and the person who took and stored all the parts I delivered was very professional and made extensive notes of what I wanted and what I had already done regarding seat height, wheel pre-build, and stack height. This was very helpful, I am sure, for the bike mechanic who put together the bike. Speaking of the bike mechanic, who I think was named Dustin, the build was pro, just excellent work. Also, he did it on time and communicated to me when finished, very promptly. RCB is the place for knowledgeable professionals who care about and listen to customers' needs--highly recommended!!! P.S. He really listened to my nuance fit issues (I'm 5'3" have a short reach) had me try several bikes and sizes I wouldn't have known about. The shop actually had frame sizes in stock to fit me! I do not recommend this bike shop. They made me feel dumb and uncomfortable for not knowing about the bike I was trying to have serviced. I will say that the fenders, chain, and gear shift look and work great. But the back tire wasn't fixed correctly. The tire blew right after I got done riding it home. And I didn't even wanna bring it back, I felt so unwelcome especially after they purposely didn't put on my chain to see if I knew how to. I saw the shocked looks on your faces when I got the chain on. I found a shop that explained to me what was causing the problem. read more

I called the store today to determine if there was a bicycle available that would fit my daughter because I wanted to get her a bike for her birthday. I planned to come in during my lunch break but was unable to because I had to cover for an employee that was sick so I couldn't leave work. Instead of receiving the answers to my questions, I got a lecture on why I shouldn't be trying to surprise anyone with a bicycle because they needed to come in so the salesman could determine what that person's goals are. As the customer in this case, I did not get my questions answered, I was unable to reach my goal of surprising my daughter for her birthday, and I decided I was not willing to give this store my business if they couldn't even answer my questions. I have been coming to River City off and on over the 20 years I've lived in Portland. As a kid, this was our go to for inner tubes and odds and ends for our BMX bikes. As an adult, I have purchased all my kid's bikes here and this past week, a new Specialized Stumpjumper. I put a deposit down for it a couple months ago and never got to see or test ride it until it came in and was assembled. However, I've been on bikes my entire life and I was encouraged by the reviews. Kind of a weird way to make a high dollar purchase, but it's just how it goes these days if you want a specific bike. In the meantime, I test rode two other bikes at other shops and waited for this to come in so I would have a point of reference to make an informed decision. This past Saturday I finally got to come in to grab it. They slapped some pedals on it and aired up the fork and rear shock to be in the ballpark of my weight range. I was allowed plenty of time to ride it around and every question I had was thoughtfully answered by the salesperson that helped me that day. Ravi and Sage both were super helpful through the entire ordering process and after taking it out for a ride the next day, I am convinced I made the right choice in selecting a new bike. It only takes one employee to ruin a reputation -- and make you question the company culture based on their comfortable behavior. The condescending interaction with him was brief, as if his "customer service" mask had slipped, showing the toxicity in his true personality. It made the experience in the store so unpleasant that I couldn't get out of there fast enough after completing the transaction I was in the middle of with a different employee. I would have preferred to pay double somewhere else, or shopped online, than to have the memory of such a negative experience making a purchase at a local shop I was looking forward to supporting. I've been going there since the early 2000s. Some of the staff are still there. As long as you have a long term staffer and long term bicyclist, you won't be disappointed. Their discount location is turning into solely and E-Bike seller, so that's where to go if you're into that. They usually have competitive prices, and if you compare them to online stores, or other outdoor stores, you'll probably just buy whatever you're looking for at River City. Ask as many questions as you can, because you'll regret not getting the right thing for your needs. The best part of this location is the upstairs track where you can try out any bike before buying it. I don't know of any other bike shop which has that. read more

I bought a sit up bike there, I knew what I wanted because I had been trying out Trek bikes which did not quite workout for me. (I liked this bike because the gears are all on one wheel, which is great in any event but this allows me to shift with my good hand only which is harder with the newer style shifters, I also got the step thru, despite the pale blue color it is worth it). They were very helpful in trying to transfer my rear rack, did not work with different size wheel, and getting my panniers to fit on the thicker bars of the new rack, when I came back. They transferred one of my water bottle cages, reflector, and upgraded by pedals with simple toe straps like I have on my old bike. Only problem I have had is the water bottle cage they transferred to this bike is allot tighter on the same bottles I was using, and it broke. The new one is still very tight , not sure why this would change by bike. And the sit up bike does not take the weight off my hands for very long, my back gets tired doing that. (But that is not their fault). read more

If you are looking for an entry level bike for a 9 year old this probably isn't the spot. Service was friendly enough but when it became clear I wasn't interested in paying a grand for a kids bike there was less interest in helping. After the disgusting way I was treated at River City, I took my bike to another shop in another city and they immediately inspected it in front of me and said everything was working perfectly. This shop tightened everything up after my move and sent me on my way with a big smile! River City is one of the very few businesses that flourished during the pandemic. So it's truly stunning to realize they are using the opportunity to perform unauthorized unrequested services, price gouge, make extremely costly inappropriate recommendations, and treat their customers horribly. My bike was sitting in their shop for a month because the parts hadn't come in, and no one bothered to call me. Wanted a groupset and wheelset, almost 2 months later I finally got my bike back with just a groupset. I was told my bike would only be there for 48 hours. Now riding season is half gone. Just don't. This bike is a sweet ride no matter the terrain. Banging hard pack & pop pop poppin through rock gardens, slip slidin thru sandy loom, crusing high banked curves holdin the line, up & over tree roots---climbing or descending--- in the sunshine, rain or mud, this bike chews up the terrain. On the Tallboy slacker geometry I definitely feel more comfortable, in control, rolling through any obstacles with confidence--- and having a blast! read more

We came here after buying a bike from their Belmont location, which was a fantastic experience on its own. There were a couple specific accessories that could only be found at this location because it is much larger and therefore has a wider selection. Everyone there was very helpful and knowledgeable. We bought pedals and they installed them quickly for us, even though the store was quite busy. My husband tried on just about every helmet they had, and the salesman was very patient, even going to the back to get other colors or sizes when requested. Thankfully one of those helmets was "the one"! My favorite part of the experience was the free espresso bar they had running. They even had eggnog and the girl made me an eggnog latte. A happy girl I was! I would definitely recommend this location if you're looking for variety and a wide selection. And delicious coffee. read more

We ordered bikes from an out-of-town shop and they arrived incompletely assembled, so we brought them to RC based on the good reviews. We were charged full assembly prices, with the promise that any missing parts or mistakes would be fixed. It took RC a month to get them done, and when pickup day came we requested help with getting them fitted to us. After waiting another 30+ minutes we each got five minutes of attention from a cranky guy who can't talk, or chooses not to. There appeared to be no one in the store willing to advise us on putting the bikes on our new car carrier so we figured it out on our own. When we got home we were unhappy but not surprised, given the quality of service, to find that one of the brake pads was rubbing on a rim. We would have returned to RC and made them fix their mistakes, but we were in the process of moving. So we took the bikes to a shop in our new town and we finally have bikes we can ride. We are perplexed by all of the positive reviews, and the only explanation we can find is that we're not regular customers with high-end bikes (we have mid-range Specialized). The place feels like a combination of assembly line (give us your money, then get out) and secret club (long minutes of personal attention for some people). Two stars instead of one for the nice guy who helped on the phone at the beginning of this ordeal. read more

My bike was on the car rack when I backed into a pole that was in my blind spot smashing up my less than 2 month old ebike's wheel into smithereens. I called up River City mildly hysterical seeking a new wheel and also hoping the frame and other components were ok. By the time I got to the store a ticket had been made up, several wheels selected and I had a feeling of relief and being taken care of. Ian checked the bike out and other than the wheel the bike was fine. Within a half hour my bike was back to almost brand new and the bike tour scheduled for the next day back on track. Customer service was just outstanding. It always is. I bought my other bikes here and would have bought my ebike but they didn't have my size at the time. All Covid protocols were being observed. River City has stayed open during the Corona Chaos - providing safe, masked, and socially distanced services.
