I give a one star review for the fact that they took my bicycle from me, i was given it from a neighbor in exchange for being a good neighbor, an appreciative neighbor. This shop took my bike from me after listening to them about the work needed to be done, they further decided to run a serial number on it without asking( not required), deciding that my bike and my time with that beautiful bike was to be taken away from me, i earned that bike, i took care of that bike. And those fuckers ran a serial number on it without asking. I dont care if i wasnt the original owner, but my intention and my care for the bike was unrefutable. I fucking hate this shop. Because they do not give a shit about the person bringing the bike in for repairs the person who cares They only give a flying fuck about rules!!!! read more

I went to Metropolis Cycles for the first time yesterday after having a poor experience at my neighborhood cycle shop where I've been going for over a decade (that has a new owner). Dillon (or Dylan) at Metropolis was great to work with! I need to deal with a stem fit issue - one that I've newly learned is and has been a significant safety concern even though I've been riding my bike in this configuration since I purchased it and went through the a professional fitting in 2013. I called Metropolis seeking a second opinion after feeling disrespected and like I was getting "man-splained", and with few reasonable options from my prior shop. I was struggling to see that there was a real issue that was going to potentially cost a couple hundred more dollars to address (on top of a extensive tune up+new chain/brake cables). I was incredibly upset as I've put thousands of miles on this bike and was feeling like I was getting the run-around and up-charged for unnecessary maintenance. Metropolis did verify that the stem fit issue was unsafe (ugh), BUT the experience in talking it through and coming up with a workable solution that will fit my ergonomic needs was a completely different experience. It was calm, respectful, informative, and collaborative. The whole vibe of the shop was calm, friendly, and welcoming- and they have a great selection of bikes and gear! Between my partner and I, we have 6 bikes - and even though Metropolis is a little farther from our house, they will be our new neighborhood shop! read more

I used to live in the neighborhood and commuted by bike to work and this shop was always my go to. They provided friendly, great service, and I found their prices very reasonable. I moved away about 5 years years ago and have missed this place ever since. No other shop seemed to leave me as pleased as Metropolis. After less than stellar experiences at other shops, I finally made the drive back here to get some work done on a new bike. I was happy to find the place hasn't changed at all from what I remembered and they offered quick and fair service. Hands down, my favorite shop (and only shop for me) for repairs in Portland. Staff are all focused, knowledgeable, and respectful of folks who earn wages and have to watch their pennies. They won't sell you anything you don't need to get your bike back on the road or trail. Brought my bike in recently for a new chain and front wheel, and now it rides like I purchased it yesterday. I almost miss the little squeaks and rattles Brad fixed for no extra charge, but now I can hear the birds and the sweet sound of the road humming under the wheels. This is a pretty sweet bike shop. There's a lot of competition in Portland, but this place had a great range of gravel, mountain, road and touring gear. And they had an All-City bike on sale for $600 off! They stock boutique brands and cool practical gear, not just expensive racing clothes. Blew a bike tire on my commute home from downtown into deep NE Portland yesterday. Started walking my bike expecting a long walk ahead of me. Then I remembered metropolis was somewhere nearby ahead. As I got near I could see that the lights were on and thought I had gotten lucky that they were still open but I arrived just after they closed and had locked the internal security gates. Suddenly I was feeling as deflated as my tire again. But the bicycle gods took pity on me and someone inside the store saw me at the front door and came to check on me. I am sure they don't make it a habit of selling products after they have already closed but they saved my ass with a new tube and let me use a floor pump to quickly fill up and get back on the road. Conveniently located in my neighborhood, I came here because I ride my bike past here frequently and was impressed with what was going on outside the shop. 2 bike pumps under a tarp set up are available in front of the shop for anyone to use, and I've witnessed bike techs greet customers outside the shop due to COViD precautions. The initial bike diagnosis was informative and in depth. Today I went to pick up my bike which hadn't been tuned up for a decade, it was so shiny and clean that I thought they had mistakingly wheeled out a new bike! I was greeted by name (pro move) and the tech recommended that my bungee cord be attached to the rack (another pro move) for safety reasons. Put on my helmet, and it had been readjusted as to not wiggle like it had for years. New chain, break pads, seat and tire made my ride home super smooth. read more

Most awkward experience I've had shopping for a bicycle. Employee seemed angry that I did not know much about bicycles and that I asked questions. Store not take $500 headphones and $245 phone as collateral for test ride. I get that these items I tried to offer could have been stolen, and that theft is an issue, and a stolen bike would have been more valuable than these items. Bring your ID and credit card if you want to test ride. Cheapest gravel bike was $1400 as of sep 2023. read more

I didn't have the tool I needed, but the guy at the shop not only adjusted the grips for me and put them on properly, but he was so sweet that he adjusted my seat and tweaked the front brake -- all without asking, and just because. Since I consider batteries old school and Dynamo lights are old school too and fumbling with USB chargers is not elegant either, I learned I can get a hub dynamo. I had a simple issue to address - tweak my gears that would literally take them five minutes!!! And, although Brad didn't feel "comfortable" quoting me over the phone (probably because he thought I would go into cardiac arrest upon finding out their rates), he said it would be $15-$25!!! He responded to my urgent after-hours inquiry pretty much instantaneously, graciously answered all my novice questions expertly, helped me and my husband find the right wheel, and even helped get it all assembled. He saved our bacon, charged a super affordable rate, taught us a couple of nifty tire tricks, and made something that had been hellish up til now so easy it's insane (we didn't know to try Metropolis Cycles until the 4th attempt at resolution). Portland's best bike shoppe. In fact, after living here for 20 years, it's the only place that I will go for service. They perfectly underpromise and overdeliver. It's a wonderful way to set expectations. Prices are very fair and the work quality if top notch. Mechanics are smart, educated, and polite. I am impressed at the speed and quality every time that I use their services. There's no pretension. The shop doesn't look like much. i.e. they are putting their time and effort into care and service instead of frills or some kind of minimalist lifestylism. I can't say enough good things about these guys. On short notice, they were able to work us in on a Saturday afternoon for a shifter cable replacement. The cables had frayed in the shifter housing, and the bike has internally routed cables--so it was outside my skill set. I'm an avid cyclist with very high performance expectations. Can't recommend. Went in this morning for bike lock. New to the city and uneducated about them in general. Young lady wouldn't tell me much about diff between 85 dollar lock and 20 dollar. Bought twenty dollar lock and researched immediately. Realized I made a mistake and talked to Abraham Fixes who set me up nice and educated me with a smile. Others mentioned young lady and young gentleman not very friendly here. Can confirm. Went to return 20.00 lock within about 3 hours of purchase. Young man seemed a bit hostile and suggested that REI might be a better place to return stuff. Really man? Cost of goods sold goes up with unfriendly employees. Too bad because I bought a helmet here recently and guy was nice. Also I asked for exchange so I could get something else. He refunded me instead so it seems they'd rather just not have my business. Amazingly if you read other peoples reviews the number one complaint is the rude and unfriendly staff. Sorry guys. Would def recommend Abrahams right down the street though on Williams and Fremont. :-X read more

Last visit, they were friendly and chatting with me about my new bicycle and I was a little jealous of some of the models they sell there, instead. I've been going to Nathan for bike repair since he was working out of a garage in his house so I was very excited when he opened a full service bike shop in such a convenient location for people in North and inner NE Portland. Like Teresa B. said, he and his staff don't try to oversell you on services or components, have very reasonable labor prices, and most importantly, they have a super fast turnaround and will give you a loaner bike, for those of us who depend on our bikes to get around! For instance, I'm getting my bike back today barely a day after dropping it off--with two new derailleurs, and my rear wheel rebuilt with a new freewheel and rim (and a new tire put on). read more

Went in here a couple years ago when they were offering a great special for a tune-up. I decided to toss some extra business their way and also have fenders put on and to have the handlebars taped. They did an awesome job, for a fair price. The fender installation was tricky because of my bike frame and they ended up having to cut part of the fender off to make it work and didn't charge extra for the labor. The dude who worked on my bike was also super duper excited when he found some handlebar tape that nearly matched the green of my bike and asked if it was okay to use that instead. Honestly, I couldn't say no because he was so enthusiastic about how well the colors matched! All in all, good clean shop with great service and fair prices. A gem for Portland. read more

After an 8 month hiatus, I finally got my fatass back in the saddle. On my way home, my chain snapped! I quickly realized that I was near my old neighborhood (thanks gentrification...) and that metropolis cycle repair was close by. I called ahead, explained what happened, they said "come on in!" I realized when I got there that I forgot my wallet at home! Slightly panicked, i told them and they said "just come back and pay us back tomorrow". I've stopped by Metropolis three times now because of their convenient location on Williams, and they've been so consistently fantastic that I'm gonna have to join the five-star chorus. I'm not gonna specify the two awesome favors that the staff have done for me because I don't want any asshats taking advantage of this radical thing called trust, so I'll just leave it at this: awesome people work there, an awesome person owns the place, they definitely know what they're doing, and they're happy to help. This shop recently completed a bike build for my daughter's bike. It turned out fantastic. There were some challenges with this project and I think we were charged very reasonably.
