Unacceptable Provider Support Community Health Group business/provider services department is extremely unresponsive and unhelpful. Emails go unanswered, and there is no real support for providers trying to complete applications or understand contracting and billing requirements. I repeatedly reached out for assistance with a provider application and received little to no guidance or follow-up. This level of neglect is unacceptable for an organization responsible for managing healthcare access. The lack of communication creates unnecessary delays and discourages providers from participating. Their "grievance" department is literally a trash can. The promotion to get people in to do things like breast exams, and children's physicals sounded pretty cool, they're going to send Amazon certificates for doing it. Very motivating. Well guess what. Somebody over there is stealing the codes and using them and when you get them in the mail they're zeroed out. The gal who answered the phone admitted this was happening a lot so somebody over there is raking it in. Amazon said they can do an investigation all it's gonna take is to a request by the buyer to look up the name of the person redeeming them. This group refuses to do it. The best advice I can give is to change to a different insurance. I had this insurance as a teenager and it was fine no issues. However, having become an adult the last 5 years have been horrible on the customer service side. I've been hung up on multiple times. I asked for a new insurance card 2 times because the doctor on the card isn't my PCP. The first time one of their people cut me off trying to explain the situation to her, then she just said "So you just want a new card?" Like no if you listen to me you'd know I need the doctor's name changed to mine specifically (which then can do). Guess what I got the new card and it was some random I'd never heard of before so the 2nd time I called for a new insurance card with my pcp on it the woman had an attitude the whole time. Why are you getting mad at me for asking for a basic service you can provide!? Never called them again after that (the new card still didn't have the right info). My mother also recently changed to them and it's been worse than my experience. For the past 2 years, she and her doctor have had to fight to get the necessary tests done for her every single time. Most recently they denied her a test to check for breast cancer (she has a history of cancer). They said she doesn't need it, yet it's for CANCER!! If she does end up having breast cancer and the delay of these tests made it so the doctor can't catch it soon I'm suing them cause that's just absurd. I have surgery coming up myself, hopefully, everything goes well as the insurance hasn't said yes or no yet. Once I recover from the surgery I'm switching insurances. I'm gonna pre-fill out the Medi-Cal choice forms now so I can just submit them once I'm better. read more

My experience has been A+. If you are trying to decide what health care insurance company to sign up with, please do yourself a favor and read this. I've been covered by Community Health Group for about 10 years. They are a regional non profit health insurance company. They only employ and serve San Diego residents. I should say at the onset that I am a demanding, sophisticated health care patient with high standards and a critical eye. I also have a horrible list of serious health issues. Let me tell you about my experience with CHG. I don't understand how they do it, but CHG consistently hires, trains, and retains smart people at every level. They are HEAD AND SHOULDERS better than any other insurance option in San Diego County. Their HR department staff tasked with hiring should be recognized for their exceptional results over the last decade. Almost every single employee I've dealt with rates A to A+ for their performance. The worst have rated a B+. This translates to the best referrals to the best doctors time and time again. And on those rare occasions when a patient doesn't "click" with a physician, they will refer you to a different one immediately without even the hint of a complaint. I've had a heart attack that was caught and stopped in what must be record time by a first rate cardiologist. Cancers (2 types) have been taken care of and eliminated by a urologist/surgeon and a dermatologist who might be the best in all of SOCAL. I've been assessed by a superstar othopedic group at UCSD Hospital. It's extremely difficult to get on staff at UCSD. Only the top 2-5% of physicians who apply are brought on board. About 6 years ago a routine physical exam revealed that my kidneys were severely damaged and heading for total failure. I was referred to a fine nephrologist who has kept me off dialysis and now sees me every 3 months. Emergency room services for a deadly bacterial infection that could have killed me instead saved me in quick order. Understand that one ER department at one hospital is not necessarily as good as the ER at another hospital. UCSD sets the bar in San Diego for ER services and just about everything else. CHG gets you access to the best, not the least expensive. If you think Kaiser offers the same quality of care as UCSD medical, you are making a huge mistake! Chiropractic, physical therapy, and all specialists offered by CHG are first rate. In short I can say with certainty that if I had $100M in the bank, I could not find or buy better medical care that I have received from CHG. That says it all. They're the worst care I've gotten anywhere in two and a half years they've run a lot of tests tried to convince me had cancer they have ignored my heart condition which is real I've seen nothing but PA except three times I saw doctors and then ordered some tests I've been here two and a half years and have had no treatment with a 4.0 aneurysm we blocked arteries etc etc for and they put me in Hance care which means somebody calls me once you twice a month and after they promised me they would get me back into an apartment within a week if I stayed for care and didn't go to Vegas I'm still paying for my own rooms I've lived a lot of places in my life I'm a senior and I guarantee you this is the worst medical I've ever received I'm planning on leaving this month and risking my life to do so but I won't make it here that's for sure not with them for my company my lawyer can take over from now read more

If you are over 60 years old, I would think twice before choosing Community Health Group. I did not have an issue until I turned 60. All of a sudden they treat you as though you are unable to manage your care. Doctors I have seen for over 20 years do not have a say in my medical decision. I have 3 doctors who have requested a medical device for my mobility. I have been turned down because they sent a women who supposedly is a physical therapist to interview me. Overall, it was a waste of time. I felt very discrimated against. She did not state things correctly and I have been turned down repeatedly, my doctors have turned down repeatedly! I have had them for years and my primary is Nathan McFarland, Lakeside-no need to name the office but he works in their group. He has done a couple questionable things with me over the years but has overall been very solid and knowledgeable. I just learned something alarming about them and that's that they will NOT prescribe one of the strongest medications against a disease I already have a 99.8% chance of recovering from without. In other words-THEY ARE DEADLY in this regard because this toxic formula generally kills elderly. They can no longer refer people to pain doctors unless that doctor will NOT prescribe narcotic pain medication-the only thing that has ever made life even minimally tolerable for me. NOPE! Not a bad health insurance group but they leave a lot to be desired. Had my kids on their plan when they were in Healthy Families and I can say that the main reason I chose this health plan for them is because their favorite doctor and dentist were both part of Community Health Group. Their local office is right down on Bay Blvd. overlooking the Chula Vista Marina in Chula Vista. I like that you can usually get through on their toll-free numbers pretty easily but sometimes I have trouble understanding some of their customer service reps-pretty thick accents. Right now they mail me come-on reminders to get me to got get a female check-up or take my son in for a physical exam-promising a gift card, if I get some paper filled out and stamped by the doctor's office. I mailed in my mammogram paper in June for a Von's gift card and I am still waiting for it. When I try to call their office, it is always one lame excuse after another why they cannot send it out. This is the main reason why I knocked Community Health Group down to just 2 Yelp Stars. Worst Insurance provider ever! Don't bother filing a grievance because they make now attempt to rectify. Here are the issues we've experienced. 1. The transportation company they use provides the worst service and they are rude. My mother is the patient with end stage renal failure on dialysis and wheelchair bound. Through out our experience with their CHG's transportation service "Black Tiger", the driver's have either been late for pickup to dialysis appointments, forgotten to pick up after dialysis appointments, but the one that took the cake was the driver that showed up late and would not pick up my mom from the doorway in her wheelchair and wanted her to be at the curb, an activity she was incapable of performing. Then he storms off without taking her to her dialysis appointment and there is video proof. When we called CHG they offered to switch her to a paratransit or CAPS service, this was worse. The driver was scheduled to pick up my mom after her dialysis appointment at 4:45pm but did not arrive until 7pm leaving her out in the cold since the dialysis facility closes at 5pm. 2. It is also true about getting a doctor's appointment. Earliest appointments were always 2-3months out. This is dangerous for a patient with a chronic illness, we ran out of insulin for diabetes but couldn't get an appointment with the primary doctor for a prescription. I wish I'd read the reviews before picking this group to care for my mom. Needless to say we will be leaving this group as fast as I can submit the "Medi-cal Choice Form". The consistency of personal, attentive service on every level and in every department is extraordinary and genuine. To put this review into a meaningful context, I'm in my early seventies and have spent decades working with doctors, researchers and exercise physiologists, along with rehab and therapy specialists. I am a strong advocate for myself and extremely selective when it comes to medical providers and agencies which manage my medical referrals, imaging referrals and pharmacological agents. My referrals are invariably processed and approved without delay by CHG and I receive confirmations which are specific and professional. All monthly medication records, letters, newsletters and printed material of every kind are produced with impeccable care and attention to detail. Most importantly, when the symptoms of some of my health conditions are not sufficiently ameliorated by generic drugs, exceptions to CHG's so-called "formulary" are appropriately and expeditiously made so that I can receive the benefits of the "proprietary" equivalents which, as we all know, are typically far more expensive but often more effective. My daughter is 52 and has been on SSI since she was 23 due to multiple medical problems. Neighborhood Healthcare in El cajon has been slow and terrible. They assigned a new primary care physician to me, but in over 7 months, I have NEVER been allowed to see him. I have MS and a host of other conditions that are serious, but I have been handed off to assistants every visit, and made to wait for hours when I have an appointment. I am 81 years old and have had health coverage with Community Health Group for many years and find their staff knowledgeable, professional, efficient and courteous. Each staff member that I have interacted with was concerned and caring. An appointment is made yearly for a staff member to visit me and a an appointment is also scheduled for a yearly house visit be a doctor for a medical evaluation. My selected primary care physician has assisted in recommending specialists for medical conditions that have required surgeries, from two cataract removals, hernia surgery and an implanted defibrillator for heart regulation.The referrals for surgery were always promptly approved. The medical coverage and staff are outstanding and highly recommended. read more

It is always partially dependant on the work you are willing to put into it but I have found the program they have in place is one that works perfectly as long as you are able to do your part. Simply the most atrocious health care I've ever had. When I need a medication that's been deemed medically necessary by a specialist that it's taken months to get, they simply deny it. And then they don't tell me they've denied it. Many of the doctors in their network are terrible and the ones that are specialists, well you can't get the care because they won't cover what the specialists want you to do. To be clear this is in regards to medications deemed necessary after 2 emergency surgeries and carious hospital stays. I have struggled to advocate for myself and spent the hours of a part-time job "following up" between this program and doctors and pharmacies, and I still do not have the basic level of care for me to function. Used to be great a year ago, now horrible. Reps on phone now in member services don't understand english, huge language barrier, they haven't paid my provider for 4 mo. of services. None of the employees return calls. You get a different answer to a basic questions each time you call. The people they used to hire were knowledgeable and willing to follow up and look into things, these people now won't. "Provider services" phone number doesn't work and they refuse to talk to providers over the phone or return calls in that dept too. I fired them today. After their doctor's did nothing but drop the ball on me for an entire year... I am Done. Time to drain the swamp and go report to Congress on just how broken the healthcare system is. An 11 week wait for a heart specialist was cancelled the day before, because Community Health doesn't pay their bills. Turned out I had a life threatening arrhythmia that needed a pacemaker. I had to leave CA to be diagnosed and treated out of state, where my real health insurance for 2016 was. I'd paid for funeral and wrote a will it was that obvious that I was dying and literally no one but my family knew it. A six month wait for the only endocrinologist was just cancelled today. They too no longer take community health. Abandon ship along with the specialists is my best advice to you Yelpers. A physical therapist named Van should be fired. Oh wait, they only hire crappy 'providers' so he's in the right place. He's adjusting spines AS IF he's a chiropractor. He Popped and cracked me and I couldn't run for my life fast to leave the building. He is an Epic tragedy for anyone that has to see him. I will gladly pay cash to go follow up on my labs with Dr. Gordon at the Downtown transitional (homeless shelter) He's more interested in helping me get well than San Diego's most exclusive, $500 an hour, doesn't take insurance, Harvard doctor. All I can say is Thank God for Dr. Gordon who came to my rescue and saved me from horrifying muscle pain & paralysis, simply from a lack of potassium. After numerous dead end phone calls between the hospital, the referring dr's office, and various chg customer service reps this week, I was in much luck when I connected with Jessica in the customer service dept today! She got accomplished in 30 mins what numerous people failed to do in these past few weeks of endless calls. I felt like I was getting the run around over and over again and Jessica was able to correct the issue and get the right people on the phone and get to the bottom of the problem right then and there!!. I'm not impressed with this health group. i picked it originally because they admitted to Children's and that's where my daughter's neurologist was. Well, now that she's not a child the process to get back to see any neurologist is unbelievable! First, my daughter was born with a syndrome-seizures are one of the symptoms and she's been seeing a neurologist since she was two. BUT I need a referral from her PCP and I'm not happy with who Community picked. It's 22 miles away from our home, and to get an appointment through this place's appointment line? Forget it. The clinic sees so many patients it's like the doctor doesn't remember who my daughter is or why she's there unless there's a chart or screen right there! Now, I need an emergency refill of her seizure meds, the clinic hasn't faxed back and she's out of meds. I call the Telephone Nurse line at community and explain the problem. Get transferred to member services and enter her member ID-it tells me to call Member Services and hangs up. WTF? So we are off to the ER, where I hate to go for a script but she needs her seizure meds and I'm done with this group and their doctors. I also tried to register her online to access her Member Portal. I enter her info and member ID and there's no record found. I have her card in front of me what you talking about!?? read more

My brief experience with CHGSD thus far has unfortunately been very reflective of the broken healthcare system in this country. One of the first red flags for me was when a CHGSD marketing agent showed up at my doorstep in casual clothes at 9 am on a Saturday morning without ever receiving confirmation from me and even after I told him I was not comfortable meeting with him at my residence. I am STILL waiting to receive my member ID card over one month after mailing the necessary documents. After being informed by a tech at my local pharmacy that I could not pick up my prescription refills without my CHGSD member ID number, I contacted CHGSD customer service to inquire about the whereabouts of my card and was informed the card was either never sent due to forms being incorrectly filled out by this marketing agent or mailed to a P.O. box they claimed to have on file as my mailing address ... which doesn't make sense because I have never rented a P.O. box in my entire life. What is concerning and completely unacceptable to me is the fact that the owner of this P.O. box now has access to my health insurance card along with any other sensitive documents they sent. I feel my right to privacy as it pertains to my personal and medical info have been breached. The customer service representative I spoke with to sort out this issue was also incredibly rude and condescending. I became so infuriated by his utter lack of professionalism during the call I bluntly informed him I would be immediately switching groups after picking up my meds. I also had a hell of a time trying to find a PCP even after widening my search to greater than 30 miles from my home because both the online provider portal and booklet are not updated. Out of sheer frustration I finally settled on a local teaching clinic after wasting an entire day calling the office of every PCP on the list of providers CHGSD is contracted with who are supposedly accepting new patients but finding out this is not the case. read more

This is truly one of the worst organizations. It's not shocking that some doctors refuse to accept this plan. I was given various "provider service" phone numbers. Nobody ever picks up the phone. We leave the message, and nobody ever calls back. The patient received the service back in March, and the claim is still not processed. The front desk staff told us that she's not allowed to give out email of claims representative. Yet, nobody at that department picks up the phone during business hours or returns any messages. I have not had a great experience dealing with Community Health Group. We have them thru Healthy Families but will be switching soon. They have denied one thing after another. They wait until the last day they have to issue a response and then its a denial, you file an appeal and they wait until the last day again to give a response. I was finally able to get somewhat of an approval (after first applying and being denied by CCS) but that was only after myself and my child's doctor calling every single day for two weeks. The only reason I give it two stars vs one is that I was able to eventually get the approval I needed for this child. Another child of mine was seen in the ER and treated for an elbow fracture. She was referred to an orthopedic by both the ER and her Primary. The Orthopedic is a part of their group. She was supposed to go for followup within 3 days to receive her cast. I go to the appt and the approval is not yet in so I'm forced to sign a waiver in order for my daughter to be seen. What do you know two week later Community Health Group comes in with a denial wanting me to apply for CCS which we know will get denied, its a simple fracture! At this point I have to take her back to get the cast off sometime in the near future so I will definitely be fighting this one too. My 3rd child was just denied a visit to an Allergy Specialist.
