Fantastic thrift shop! Lots of fun to walk through and find some nice items! A great way to give back to a great charity! Proceeds help the local hospice. I donate quite frequently as well. It's easy pull up, they are always very helpful unloading and giving receipts. read more

I called and spoke with a gentleman on a Tuesday regarding getting a portable sewing machine. It was very polite and told me that their electrician would be there on Wednesday and he would go look for one in the warehouse upstairs and let me know if he got one. I am updating my review . After posting here, management contacted me and honestly tried to remedy the situation. The mark of a good business is not that they don't make mistakes, but how they embrace honest feedback to correct those mistakes. Hope Chest did just that and so my faith in this business has been restored. We could all learn a good lesson in small business management by the way this management team addressed this issue. Thank you. ORIGINAL REVIEW I donate here often and shop here from time to time at the McHenry location. This has been my go to place for donating, but recently their donation services are not what they used to be. I was donating items and they were taking donations until 4 pm. Get there at 3:43 pm and they say to me we are only taking clothes donations after 3:30pm. What? While I had clothes to donate and did, I had good items to donate that were not clothes, and they would not take them. So, they expect me to come back to donate those items? There were no signs that said anything about not taking non clothes items after 3:30 and signs saying they take donations until 4 pm. I think they tell you that so the workers can get out of there at a certain time. If so, they should have at least put a sign up. They used to be great about donations and now they are just not very good about the whole donation process. Taking my items elsewhere. I wish I could continue to support them because it goes to a good charity, but not going to go through the hassle that the store is now putting you through to give them items.When I first moved here to Modesto, this place was just fantastic. Visiting family from out of state and I needed some clothes. Visited The Hope Chest as this is a thrift store I used to go to for sevetal years when I was in high school and lived locally. I found several items i liked but was then told that the dressing rooms are not open. Okay no big deal, I ask what the return policy is because i dont know what will fit and what wont.....except i am told there is no return policy...if this thrift store is seriously going tonforce people to waste their hard earned money on clothes that may not even fit then why are they in business? Im am absolutely astounded that they disrespect the public like this. read more

This is the "lite" version of the better store way out McHenry -- way fewer non-clothing items, more scrubs, and a better parking lot. This one might skew toward more "collectible" items, as well. read more

Pretty good. Some things are way over priced, but some things are way under priced. The employees were friendly, the patrons were interesting as well. If some guy sleeping on one of the sofas bothers you, this is not the place for you. I got a small wooden table that is a little scratched up, but perfectly functional for $7.50 because furniture was 25% off. Considering that I won't need it for that long, it's a pretty good deal to me. read more

There are some pretty old reviews on here. Let me update. Staff can be pleasant but sometimes not very helpful. Clothing is unorganized. You need to look through the entire rack to find what you're looking for because they are not hung by size. They are just randomly placed. There are some clothes for sale that are too worn to even be used as rags. Staff needs to comb through and get rid of the garbage. That includes electronics. Why is there an email machine from the late 90's for sale? It has 320kb of ram. Also items and store in general needs a good scrubbing. Generally I spend a lot of my time looking for my size and only end up finding maybe one or two items of clothing that are actually decent to wear for work. read more

This place is a solid, good thrift store. Good ratio of clothes to books to furniture to misc items. Regular sales on different groups of items. Typical prices. I like to come here regularly. Tons of glass ware. Tons of plates. Good selection of DVDs. Good amount of furniture. The parking lot is kind of wonky. Can't leave the way you came in. I have been here a handful of times, price are okay. The store itself is very messy, this I feel would be different if the associates would help clean up a bit instead of just staying at the register. I went there yesterday to see any costume for my kids. I found what I was looking for but the cashier, Serena, I believe looked like she didn't want to be there. Very low energy and no friendly communication. She over charged me for a costume, which was a mistake I understand. By when I told her she just stood there. "Oh, I will have to go get the manager." She said and just stood there. She didn't move, didn't go get the manager, she just started talking with another associate that was there with her. The other associate was at least fold and hanging clothes but Serena just stood there. This is was bothered me, she didn't say" my manager will be here" or "she on her way." Just stood there in silence. The manager finally came over after 5 mins of silence and return the money to my debit, which I'm still waiting for 24 hrs later. I would try to find people that would actually help their customers. read more

Four stars for the store itself, which is a reliable source of cheap but awesome books, great women's clothing finds (a $100 J.Jill jacket for $4!), and genuine bargains on everything in the store thanks to reasonable prices that are frequently augmented by 50% off days and tag sales. I find the Hope Chest stores beat the local Goodwill and Salvation Army stores easily in both price and selection. But MAN...the customer service at this one is simply atrocious. I've had bad experiences with the employees here before, unfortunately, but always managed to brush it off - I know the employees are volunteers and working with the public is no picnic. But after my recent experience I've finally had it. First - we arrived at 5:15 PM, 45 minutes before the store's closing time, 6:00 PM. A couple of minutes after arriving we were treated to a loud and very personal conversation between two female employees about their highly dysfunctional family lives as they traipsed all over the store doing...whatever they were doing. No customers in any business should ever overhear anything like this from employees, but these two seemed oblivious to the reality that they were, in fact, WORKING and what they were talking about was inappropriate. We had an eye on the clock and had been looking around for less than 20 minutes when a male employee began shouting that the store was closing. A female employee began ushering people (including us) out of the book room with the same message. When several customers pointed out to her that it was over 20 minutes until closing time, she then asked, "what time is it?' as if she had not been aware of the fact that she was kicking people out of the store nearly half an hour early (!). Other Hope Chest stores seem to have a policy of alerting customers that the store will be closing in 10-15 minutes, which is a perfectly reasonable way to do things, but this is the second time I've actually been wrangled out of this particular store nearly half an hour before closing time. WTF? I know people want to get off work, but how about just a warning to start wrapping it up instead of essentially kicking paying customers out? Then, I had a dvd that I wanted to buy and took the empty case to the register, where they keep the actual discs to prevent theft. The cashier looked in the place where the discs are usually kept, didn't find mine, gave a shrug, and that was it. No apology, no attempt to smooth it over. Lots of chatting among the employees, though. Do you think any of them knew - or cared - what an alienating experience they'd just put us through? Probably not. Community Hospice is a fine organization which has given the area a great resource with their chain of stores. But whoever is in charge of training staff for this one needs to get real. Even in a volunteer situation there should be some standards. There are too many other thrift stores in town to keep patronizing one where customers are treated so gracelessly. read more

My granddaughter and I visit Modesto thrift stores every couple of months. I have visited for years. Our last visit was on the MLK holiday. We were both a bit shocked by the "mess' and items crammed inside the store. Most appearing to be junky and/or dirty. Also, prices seem to be high. Has there been a staff change? read more
