Fantastic. This place is yep, fantastic, so do yourself a favor and get over here. The food, the service, the atmosphere...it's everything you're looking for just not in a location you'd expect. But so what? It's completely worth the trip. The decor is understated and crisp; it is dimly lit in there so expect a yank out of the phone for your flashlight. It's casual but yet also upscale without being snooty. The menu is not lengthy but no worries, that allows them to focus and focus they do. The assortment of cheese is so tasty. My sweetheart has thoroughly enjoyed the flank steak as well as the NY strip. I've enjoyed the filet, one of the most tender I've ever had in any restaurant around town, and after watching a plateful of Thursday-only fried chicken wander past, we *will* be going back for that. Their wine selection is very nice, the chocolate torte, uh huh delicious as are the freshly fried homemade donuts. Service is polite and unobtrusive, always willing to assist and answer questions, and exactly as service should be. All in all, get yourself here and often. read more

My sister and I decided to do a little bonding on a Wednesday night and chose Community which is in our neighborhood. We walked in and were greeted by a super friendly host who asked if were celebrating anything special, we both laughed and just said no, just sisters hanging out. To our surprise, we were given two glasses of champagne on the house to make the night something special. WOW, what a great touch and that level of service continued to the rest of the night. We chose a few of their small plates and they were all very delicious and high quality. The drinks were great and the ambiance was also perfect for the night - not loud, comfortable and warm. Community Tavern takes reservations and accommodated our party of 10 with the perfect table. The interior of the restaurant has a chic, modern French vibe with pretty chandeliers and sturdy cushioned chairs. Our booth had a semi-private feel with narrow columns separating the group tables, so no need to worry about bumping elbows with strangers. The 2- and 4-top tables did not look as cozy. On a Wednesday evening, street parking was easy to find too. The menu is small, but I still think it boasts something for everyone. Our group shared multiple orders of the grilled cheese (gruyere with raspberry jam), and it was so good that we literally lost track of how many of these we ordered to share. On Wednesdays, the special is $1 oysters. I had two and thought they were pretty good. The steak frites were cooked a perfect medium and served with an herb-y aioli sauce. I used the sauce to dip my fries instead, because I ordered a side of Bearnaise sauce for my steak. The fries were really good too, not too crispy and not too soggy! Sauces are an extra $2, by the way. I cannot live without Bearnaise on my steak, but charging extra for sauce just seems greedy - personally I'm just not a fan when restaurants do this. My friend had the duck confit and said it was one of the "top 5" things she'd ever eaten. The cheesecake also looked quite decadent. The cauliflower side was disappointing. The tomato sauce was just not good. Drinks were great. The Second Base (with vodka and pear) and the Rosemary Gin Gimlet are winners. If you like gimlets, try this! It was refreshing and the rosemary wasn't overpowering. There's also a wine and beer list, and a full bar, in case the cocktail menu doesn't suit you. Service was okay. The server kept touching my shoulder unnecessarily, it was too much. However, he was quite patient taking a million pictures with my friend's phone. Drink service was REALLY slow though, even for beer, and they forgot my friend's wine (but they didn't charge us for that). At a "steakhouse," bread and butter would be a nice addition to the appetizer menu. After waiting long periods for drinks, I was craving carbs and fat. There is a charcuterie option, but sometimes you just want some bread. Community Tavern had an upscale feel to it, with good food and ambience. I loved a lot about CT. Reservations were made easily for our group of 8. Wednesday night must be group night because there were 2 other large groups there as well. The space is very pretty--very boutique-y and a nice surprise in this area of Chicago. Sleek, a little French, very cute. The menu is on the smaller side but had a nice selection of appetizers, large plates and steak courses to choose from Our group had several appetizers and each had a main. The grilled cheese (gruyere, raspberry jam, watercress) was so delicious and so much of a fave that I had to re-create it at home. The oysters were ok, I am not sure what kind they were (they were ordered and at the table by the time I arrived) but they had too much of a mineral taste--unfortunately not a fave. My drink "the second base" was definitely a home run (sorry, baseball fan here) as it had a nice citrus and refreshing taste to it. My steak frites were delicious. The steak cooked to a perfect medium as requested. The frites crispy but not overdone. And I preferred the herbed aioli over the steak sauce that it was served with. It seemed like all the steaks on my side of the table were winners with the diners too. The side of cauliflower was a disappointment. That tomato base and over abundance of cheese ruined a perfectly roasted cauliflower. My tablemates agreed--simple would have been better. Service was very hit or miss. The delays and missed items were common during our meal. My glass of wine never got to me, nor was it on the bill, but I still would have liked a glass of red with my steak. Sure I never asked for it, but whenever someone in our group asked for another drink, it seemed to take forever--even if it was just a beer. Wonderful place in a lacking area. I've lived down the street for 8 years and slowly but surely this area is getting some much needed places to dine. Whether it's a chain place like Potbelly or a gem like Community. Community is downtown, wicker park, Lincoln park, and other hip neighborhoods worthy but we got them! It's dark and cozy and I love that. It's upscale but laid back and casual. The environment kind of reminds me of a dark castle or cave. The menu is on the smaller side but I prefer that. I ordered the scallops which were amazing. I also had the side cauliflower dish which had a nice kick to it and definitely large enough for 2-3 people especially if you order other sides. This isn't just any old tavern. Fine dining in a beautiful, tasteful, rustic setting. Pretty light fixtures with great ambient lighting. The short ribs were delicious as was the yellow beet salad, a great combination of flavors. My husband had the cheeseburger and said it was one of the best he has had. The staff was very friendly and our server, Eric was great! The only downside was the parking (at least on a Saturday evening). Hard to find a space close. read more

So we did a Saturday night dinner at the Community Tavern. We're not from the neighborhood and hadn't heard of it before but received the gift card from some family. So date night it is! To start parking is pretty atrocious in this neighborhood if you have a way to not have to drive here take it. LYFT, uber, bus... save yourself the stress! We definitely had to circle around for a good ten minutes before we could find a spot and it was still quite a bit of a walk. That said once we got to the restaurant it had a nice atmosphere and everyone was quite polite. We started off with some cocktails which were very good. I had an old fashioned which was as to be expected good but not mind-blowing. However my boyfriend had something called the Holy Ghost, this was mind-blowing. Something about the tequila with the chili oil giving it a hot live at the very end of your ship was just so enjoyable. It had a frothy egg topping and we definitely went back for seconds and thirds. We did order the escargot and a special of the night appetizer. Both were good. Then we had the balsamic glazed brisket over the risotto. While the portion looks small at first it was absolutely divine. The risotto was rich creamy and very filling and the brisket was a very sizeable chunk and absolutely perfectly cooked. Would recommend the brisket to anyone! Would we come here again? Yes, but most likely if we receive another gift card. For two people, and yes we had drinks, but still for two people are bill was about $140 before tip. Not something we would typically spend on a Saturday night out unless it's a special occasion. read more

The staff is friendly and very helpful. The drink menu has a lot to choose from with a really nice wine selection. I visited this restaurant last night for this first time with a large group who were there celebrating my fiance's birthday. The staff was very accommodating. They expanded our reservation a few days prior and then called the day of to offer a private room for our group (another party had canceled), which was really nice. The food was incredible. Everyone seemed to enjoy their dishes, and I honestly liked everything I tried. I had the Trip-Tip Steak, which was cooked perfectly. My fiance had the filet (also amazing), and our table ordered an assortment of appetizers and drinks. No complaints at all about the food. It was well worth the money and some people even said it was one of the best steaks they'd ever had. The only areas I could think of for improvement would be to offer a waiting area. We had about 15 minutes to kill before our reservation, so we went to the bar, but it was a bit crowded and it felt like there was nowhere good to go wait. This isn't a problem in the summer when it's nice out and people can stand outside, but it presents an issue in the winter, where waiting outside isn't really an option. The only other small thing I noticed was with the dessert. I asked our waiter about doing a dessert for my fiance's birthday and he said, "Absolutely, just pick one out and we can put a candle on it", which they did, but then I noticed I was charged for it later. I understand not every place does free things for birthdays or celebrations, but it would have been nice if he had made that clear when I discussed the dessert with him. Plus, it would have been a nice gesture considering our group easily spent about $1,000 overall. Comping a $10 dessert wouldn't have killed them. Nevertheless, I would definitely go back and eat here again. The food is worth the money and the atmosphere is modern, yet intimiate and comfortable. read more

Heard a lot of buzz bout this place so yes I had some high expectations. We were seated promptly at 8:30 and were offered drinks quickly. I had "hold the door l" cocktail which was great and another friend had some duck fat drink something or other which she loved. Food wise, we started with beet salad, pate, and wild mushrooms. All were superb. 2 of us had the NY strip and unfortunately 1 of us had a steak that tasted like prime steak and the other tasted like a Jewel steak as it was tough and not good at all. The third entree ordered was the short ribs over risotto which was delicious. For desert, we had the chocolate cake and vanilla bean cheesecake. The cheesecake had this funky lemon curd thing on top and it was just horrible. It had this funky fishy aftertaste which was odd. The chocolate cake had this mouse-like topping with some rice crispy thing topping it and it was just stale. Yuck! Not a good way to finish a meal. Atmosphere-wise, the place was cool. Love love love the chandelier as you enter. Well I should as it's the same one I got for my dining room. Restoration Hardware all the way! Anyway I digress...would I go back? Sure I would! read more

Community Tavern is an absolute must in your Chicago dining rotation. We are regulars and every time we go, we're blown away by how delicious the food this. The Chef is super talented and is constantly surprising us with his flavor combinations. Last night we had the short rib dumplings (decadent and delicious) and the apple salad (great combo of sweet, tangy and spicy) to start. My husband had the swordfish (always skeptical of swordfish, but this was outstanding) and I had the ribeye (I'm in love with the smoked tomato mayo!) This place is a jewel for the neighborhood. Looking for a new restaurant, I pulled-up Yelp and expanded my normal search parameters and moved the location a bit out of our usual stomping grounds. Community Tavern came up with very positive reviews and an interesting menu. We booked it and made the drive over to Portage Park. We started with the night's special appetizer which was pork sausage with a chili yogurt sauce, blueberries, squash and spicy peanuts. Yes, this sounds like a completely zany concoction of ingredients, but it was surprisingly delicious. I wished there was more of it! The salad menu offered 3 different choices, but none of them really stood out. I ordered the shaved veggies and it had pistachios, kale/arugula, cherry tomatoes, goat cheese, squash, and some kind of vinaigrette. It was fresh and tasty, but I think I would have preferred this combo on a mixed greens or spinach leaf. My wife ordered the chicken and it was so delicious! The skin had a crispiness to it that broke under you fork to reveal the juiciest, most flavorful chicken inside. It's hard to get chicken to taste that incredible and it's a rare occasion that we are raving about chicken at a restaurant, but this is the exception. I had the filet mignon with au poivre sauce. It was the perfect tenderness and cooked to a perfect medium rare. The meat itself was so flavorful and moist. We both noted there was a distinct buttery corn flavor to the steak. The dessert menu is fun. We had the Chocolate pot de creme which came with a marshmallow and graham cracker crunk on top of the cream. So rich and yummy! We also had them bring out the brown butter chocolate chip cookies (which were of course, served warm). We really liked our meal here and commented about how we wanted to come back to try the double cheeseburger (which we saw a ton of coming out of the kitchen, so they must me amazing). Still, I think we'd have to order that chicken again. Wow, is it delicious! Service was incredibly polite, professional, and friendly. We were seated at a high top, which was fine for seeing the whole restaurant. I think next time, we will request one of the lower tables by the wall. Great dinner spot. We'll be back! read more

Fantastic spot! Still battling whether I like the portage or community better...leaning portage but it doesn't matter because they are both great. We had great drinks and a very good affordable wine. My drink was a whiskey sour and it was awesome! For meals the steak and pork chop and both cooked perfectly. The sauces that came with both were fantastic. Sides were mushrooms and mashed potatoes. Dessert was the cobbler and it was delicious Service was excellent. My only downside is that I don't get to come here every weekend read more

TL;DR - awesome food, expect service to improve as location matures, eat here if you want an awesome steak and some menu items you haven't had anywhere else. My roommates and I tried Community on a Friday night, which I think was only their second day of service! Our party of three got right in, luckily, since they are currently only accepting reservations for parties of 5 or more. The interior size is typical of a Chicago restaurant - quaint, dark, cool stuff on the walls. We started with 3 appetizers: roasted bone marrow, king crab leg, and escargot. All awesome. Cocktails were fantastic (bar was a bit backed up that night). Entrees were the ribeye (perfection) and fresh fish (salmon). Sides are a la carte (mushrooms, mashed potatoes, roasted carrots). Everything was fantastic! Desserts are all made in-house and I'm sure change frequently. Expect to pay a decent amount, but expect great food (our bill was about $70/person for appetizers, entrees, and drinks). As far as steaks go, not quite at the level of a Joe's or Chicago Cut, but definitely a great addition to the north side's Portage Park neighborhood. read more

Being a fan of The Portage, I was really looking forward to checking out their sister location. I started with their cheddar muffin and enjoyed that almost as much as anything else that night. The cauliflower soup had great seasoning and was probably my favorite dish of the night. That was fortunate because it was about a 30 to 45 minute wait until our entrees. Jesse was our server and while personable, totally disappeared during the kitchen backup with no explanation as to why the long wait. This would have been forgivable, however, the entrees were more like appetizers. I had the seared sea scallops. At $28 a pop, i was expecting a bit more than 3 large sea scallops with little garnish (like tiny pieces of lobster and shrimp). Honestly, it would have made a great appetizer for $13, but this was just disappointing ... I was more filled up by the $2 muffin than the main course.. Particularly after the long wait. Maybe its because I had recently been to some great tapas restaurants, this dish would have blended in fine, but as a standalone meal, I left hungry. My friend had the sirloin filet and it looked equally small. Tiny portion of mashed potato under the steak on a large plate just didn't cut it for him. The manager/owner stopped by to ask about our dinner and although i mentioned, the long wait, I got the feeling like he couldn't wait to get away from the table and talk to people who were 100% happy. I could be wrong, but didn't get the feeling their was much concern. Anyhow, we all agreed that while a nice place to visit, very loud atmosphere but not worth a return visit. read more
