This is a nice restaurant with great upscale decor, service, drinks, and food without feeling fancy. Prices are very reasonable too, especially during happy hour (every day!). We came on a Saturday and sat at the bar to enjoy a variety of menu items. I first got a mezcal drink to start, which was refreshing with the appetizers we got. We had the papaya salad, dan dan noodles, and mushroom butter dumplings off the happy hour menu. We also had the short rib dumplings - both dumplings were so delicious, the mushroom butter dumplings were more creamy/buttery whereas the short rib dumplings had more of a bbq savory taste. The dan dan noodles were saucy and delicious, and the papaya salad was light and refreshing. The poached prawns were also tasty and refreshing, and the bulgogi steak was definitely our favorite dish with excellent korean flavors and tender juicy pieces of steak. The potato pave was a nice tasty side to it as well. I'm so glad I finally got to try this cute spot and had an excellent meal! read more

Community Tavern quickly became one of our favorite restaurants in the city. After trying all the social media crazed restaurants, we were starting to become tired of the similar aesthetics and menus. We did our extensive research and Community Tavern kept popping up so we had to try it. It's such a big space and their menu has some core items but i do notice that they do swap a few things every now and then. You cannot dine here without trying the dumplings. And i know, it's a bit pricey for dumplings but the filling is to die for. We tried the short rib, corn, and mushroom butter, and they are all so good but the short rib would have to be our favorite. it is beyond divine and melt in your mouth type of dish. Super flavorful and cooked perfectly. I think that Community Tavern does really well with their noodles since we've been to say the least, addicted, to the crispy rice noodles and pasilla chili udon. The crispy rice noodles remind me of banh uot which is a Vietnamese dish! Since I'm Vietnamese, I was hesitant in getting it because i thought you know, how good or different could it be? Well, it was amazing. The flavors, texture, everything. The pasilla udon has such a dynamic flavor profile to it because you have your savory, spice, but also this tangy zesty feel from the pasilla. I've honestly never tasted anything like it. Our favorite main would be the steak bulgogi. I believe they rotate the bulgogi every now and then but you cannot really go wrong with it. Cooked perfectly and the sauce is to die for. We always ask for an extra side of sauce! This is a winner in my book and a recommendation I will always have for anyone in the city. read more

I came here with a few girlfriends for dinner and had the best time! The space is cozy and seems to be very family friendly. We shared the Charred Kale Salad, Mushroom Butter Dumplings, Cauliflower Dumplings, Dan Dan Noodles, and Vietnamese Crepe. My favorites wre the dumplings and the dan dan noodles. It's difficult for me to find the words to describe Community Tavern other than to say the experience was disjointed. I was here as part of one of those "dinner with strangers" events, and a couple of people were running late. The host allowed us to be seated before everyone arrived, but the server would not take our orders until the entire party was at the table. Even though we were all very hungry, we couldn't even order appetizers. We could, however, order drinks. One person at our table was ready and ordered a beer. The server took this single order and walked away without asking any of the rest of us if we were ready to put beverage orders in. Umm... dude, have turned invisible?! Finally, our table was complete, and we placed our food orders. I ordered the Cobia Tataki, the pork belly egg noodles, and a Smaktail mocktail. The server noted that the Smaktail would resemble a virgin margarita. For the Cobia Tataki, I greatly appreciated that this dish allowed the fish to shine. For the most part, the spices played their role without detracting from the fish itself. However, when it came to those other elements on the plate, I was left a little confused. The peas didn't hurt, but they felt out of place. Meanwhile, the wheat berries detracted from the dish in my opinion. They were too firm to maintain cohesion in terms of texture. So, let's say: great fish, unnecessary wheat berries, confusing peas. Next, the Pork Belly Egg Noodles. My fans know pork belly is one of my weaknesses, so it was almost a given I'd order this. The verdict? I felt this dish was overall fine, but with room for improvement. The pork belly had a couple of struggles. First, while some parts were tender and melt-in-your-mouth, other parts were a bit too "roasty." Not only did this affect the texture and mouthfeel, but fumbling with a dull knife in a bowl resulted in them being torn. Second, it was not seasoned in any noticeable way. While eating the impromptu shreds with the saucy noodles helped, this doesn't excuse the fact that a little salt was definitely called for. When it comes to the noodles, I have no complaints. They were cooked well and saucy; I might even argue they had a little too much sauce for my taste. The other accouterments were a mixed bag. I enjoyed the crunch and light sweetness of the daikon(?). However, the Thai eggplant felt almost like an afterthought. Given how it was incorporated, it was almost like eating pieces of cooked green tomato. I'm not sure it served any real purpose. Thus, for this one, while the noodles were well-executed and the dish had the right ideas, the unseasoned, over-roasted pork and some seemingly unnecessary additions detracted from the dish. Then there was the Smaktail mocktail. Looking back at the menu and seeing what this one should have been, it was a terrific disappointment. I would have preferred to drink watered-down Trader Joe's jalapeño limeade. No, I'm not exaggerating. This drink was just gently sweet, with a whisper of tart. The promised seedlip spice, cilantro, jalapeño, and lime were nowhere to be found. My palate might be shot, but I think I would have picked up even on a whisper of heat. When it comes to prices, these were on the higher end of the spectrum. The Tataki was $18, and the noodles were $26. While we can attribute some of my quibbles to a disagreement with their creative decisions, the quality issues (e.g. lack of salt) become less forgivable. Finally, despite the initial pandemonium, I would like to mention that once the food orders were placed, the service was generally fast and attentive. The generally positive reviews and interesting menu had me excited to try Community Tavern, and I thought I would love it. However, the result was below my expectations. While nothing I had was bad, issues with execution and creative decisions kept it from being a great experience, and as such I'm not itching to come back soon. read more

Fantastic modern contemporary cuisine. Drawing from Asian and American roots, to say it is fusion is to diminish its deliciousness. Remarkable are the mushroom butter dumplings, explodes in the mouth. The Dan Dan are vegan and fantastic. And the bibimbap is saucy with a lightly cooked egg, elevated but still great. So I want on a date at community tavern and it was very good. First things first, the waitress was EXCELLENT. She was chill and kept checking on us. Really excellent service while having a ton of tables. The food itself was very good. We got the papaya salad and split the vermicelli. Both were very good with the papaya salad having a pad Thai vibe and the vermicelli giving ramen/pho vibes but heavy on the noodles which I very much prefer. Good meal. I will be coming back. I was here on a Wednesday evening with friends who live in the area . The restaurant's menu is Asian influenced American food - resulting in delicious & savory plates. We arrived for part of Happy Hour - $25 bottle of wine! Starting with a variety of appetizers , vegetables & noodles , later our main was rainbow trout. In between the appetizers and main there was an amuse booze/cocktail to cleanse the palate ; it was created by the bartender and the chartreuse color and taste were magical. No dessert, but port to finish the meal . Per usual, sitting at the bar was perfect, from there I could view the warm glow of the dinning room provided by the chandeliers . Finally got to come by for a meal at Community Tavern. I really loved how not pretentious this restaurant is. Great service, our server was very cool, she did get super busy by the time we left, so she couldn't chat as much by the end, but that's totally fine. She was super nice and helpful. We started w the cobia tataki and grilled oysters. The oysters were very good, on the tinier side tho, I was glad we got them grilled, the parm on top was so good. The cobia tataki was alright, I prob would've rather had 4 more oysters over the tataki. Then we had the mushroom butter dumplings and the short rib dumplings, as well as the werp farm carrots. The carrots were insanely good, flavor explosion! Perfectly cooked carrots, the onions were so good in it too. My husband doesn't do well w spicy foods so he said it was too spicy, but he still ate them bc they were so tasty! I absolutely loved those dumplings. He thought the mushroom butter dumplings were too buttery, I thought they were divine lol we finished w the roasted pork belly and crispy noodles. The crispy noodles could've been crisper and were missing something, I think the missing component is an element of sweetness maybe? The roasted pork belly was pretty good. A pleasant unexpected surprise!! I dropped in during the week after a long work day looking for a bite and a stiff drink. I sat at the bar and was immediately greeted by a kind gentlemen. I always look at the menu before visiting a restaurant so I knew what I wanted but I also ask the staff for recommendations. I had the mushroom butter dumplings and Dan Dan noodles, both excellent but the dumplings I sometimes dream about and I regret not taking an order to go. They didn't have sriracha as a condiment which was a bummer because it would've took the dan dan to a 10. Happy hour is everyday the first hour they're open so don't miss that, I had an excellent martini and a beer on the house. Service was fantastic, small but neat dining area and clean restroom. You will see a service charge on your bill that covers insurance for their employees, it can removed upon request but I paid it. I appreciated the transparency of the charge. I will definitely be back for dumplings and to try more of the menu. read more

This place offers a wide mix of food choices from Asian Fusion to burgers. The atmosphere and service was good. Food was decent but nothing to rave about. I was disgusted when I received my check. 1st, they charge a 4% service fee for employees health insurance that totaled $12.00. Then due to the number in party a 20% tip was automatically added. This is fine but on a $300 tab the establishment's 20% turn out to be $62.50 instead of $62.00. What kind of math is this? I don't agree with establishments charging diners for employee health. Build it into your food prices! This is the cost of doing business. How do you want to have airlines charging 4% on your ticket for employee health? Or banks, supermarkets? I would think this added service charge only benefited the restaurant owners because their employees still probably have to pay for their insurance premium, co-pay, etc., so I did ask them to remove this charge. Second, the calculation of 20%? 20% is 20% doesn't matter how you calculate this. If they overcharge a little on each table, it will add up to a lot. Shady business practice unfortunately. I didn't bother saying anything to move the $2.50 because I won't be back. **(oh, so I figured this out, they charge you 20% tip on top of your 4% employee health care service charge) when they removed the employee health service charge of $12.00 they still charged me 20% tip on it. I am amazed at how good this place was. The food and drinks were excellent and the service was top notch. We actually had a large group that made three reservations. Seeing we were all together, they called me and combined a couple of the tables. I found out after the fact that one of my table mates called in because his son had an allergy. They were able to accommodate him which was awesome. One unique factor is this place is that it's upscale, but still kid friendly. There is a special kids menu which the food came out immediately. Like within four minutes. The kids ate everything! As for the adults, we got dumplings, egg rolls, and salad for appetizers. All were excellent, especially the egg rolls. I went with the aged duck for dinner. Awesome choice! It was a little spicy, but I like it. We had a couple of burgers at the table that looked awesome! We shared two desserts. I highly recommend the baked Alaska. It's pretty rare to see it in a restaurant. We also got the honey cake which I thought was ok, but everybody else loved. Pair all of this with an awesome duck fat old fashioned and you got a meal! I greatly enjoyed my time here. The service was exceptional and I will be back soon! A recent return to Community Tavern reinforced our impression that the food was terrific (papaya salad, broccoli, pork ribs, carrots, dan dan noodles). However, the service experience this time was nothing short of bizarre. In addition to finding it difficult to, well, communicate and elicit suggestions - to be clear, there were no language issues at all - we were largely ignored by our server throughout the course of the meal and then rushed as we neared the finish. Abrupt, unhelpful, hurried... truly a substandard service experience and as the "host" I was frankly embarrassed. I'll note in fairness that we arrived on the later side the evening of our visit (albeit well within operating hours). Not at all what we expected based on a previous visit (favorable in all respects). Am hoping this experience was merely an outlier. read more

I came back here recently with two girlfriends to celebrate all three of our bdays. It was a Tuesday night, so it wasn't too busy, but still kinda loud and service was oddly slow (last time I came in on a Friday and I couldn't hear the person I was with and service was pretty slow). To start, it took about 15 minutes for us to get water, and 20 before our drink order was taken, and over 30 by the time we got our drinks. We had a similar experience when we came on Friday, which was why I hoping it would be different on a Tuesday. Also, my friend never got her 2nd drink order, but given the pace of everything, she didn't bother reminding her because our food took a while too, and our server didn't check back in until we were basically done with our food. As far as the food, 2 of us weren't that hungry, but since they insist you put your entire order in at once (which I forgot, and was not a fan of last time), we decided to just do family style and order a bunch of stuff. We ordered the papaya salad, hamachi tartar, carrot dumplings, chicken and kimchi dumplings, the kimchi mussels, the dan dan noodles and the rainbow trout. The standout for me was the hamachi tartar, it was delicious and I easily could have gotten one on my own - 5/5, definitely recommend! Next up in terms of what we liked were the kimchi mussels and dumplings - they both had great flavor but the mussels were a bit too salty, even for me and I love salt - but still, 4/5. We also got the papaya salad and carrot dumplings and those were just ok. The salad lacked the spice and heat I'm used to and smokey flavor of the dumplings was too overpowering for my taste. I had half of one and it was enough - 3/5 as a group, but 2/5 for me. And last up were the dan dan noodles and rainbow trout. Both were extremely salty and the noodle sauce was pasty instead of saucy, I could only do a bite of each - 2/5. Since it was our bday they brought us each a cookie with a candle, which was sweet but the cookie wasn't great either. I would have preferred one nicer dessert and split it three ways, but our pallets were thrown off from our meal so who knows? Because of the policy to order it all at once and have them parse / serve it all, my friend made it a point to mention how salty the food was and how the dan dan noodles and trout dishes clashed. Personally I think they should have offered to discount the food but times are hard so I get it. Anyway, the food came to ~$50-55 per person, which isn't too pricey, but annoyingly they are one of the restaurants that add a 4-5% charge for employee benefits. I find that extremely annoying bc most servers don't work full time, and even if they do, the business should pay for that and using the excuse that they apply this charge to avoid raising menu prices makes no sense to me at all. We end up paying the same so just raise the prices instead of thinking we don't know math. Bottom line, I don't plan to go back, but it is a cute addition to the neighborhood so I'd say its still worth checking out - just manage your expectations in terms of timing and the saltiness of the foods I mentioned. read more

I went over the past spring. There was a good selection of Asian foods. Had noodles with peanut (Dan Dan Noodles) and was very tasty! Also had mushroom butter dumplings that did not disappoint. Down it with wine and a recommended dessert (4 Layer Coconut Cake), then you'd call it awesome! The seating was limited, but found a seat at the bar. Did not have to wait long. The servers were very attentive and had my cocktail prompt. Not only the servers were friendly, but the people seated were friendly as well. Talk about a hidden gem! community tavern is an amazing restaurant owned and run by husband & wife, Joey & Brenna Beato. It's an American restaurant with a Pan-Asian influence and the flavors are WOW! The crispy rice noodles were fantastic! The noodles were fried PERFECTLY for that balance of soft mixed with the crunch. It's tossed in a lemongrass ragu with chicken and fried garlic. It was full of so much flavor! The Korean potato pancake is a great appetizer that has just enough heat to get your tastebuds warmed up. Wow. We popped by without a reservation on a Friday night and were met with a 2 hour wait or the option to pop down the street for a bit to wait for a bar spot to open up. The hostess called us to be seated maybe 20 minutes later- so incredibly nice. The food was incredible- one of the best meals I've had in a very long time. I drove for 40-minutes to get here right at 5 pm when they open the doors. When I got there at 4:55 people were waiting outside to dine in. I was favored with rock-star-parking right in front of their door and free because it was Sunday. I sat at the Bar order an Old Fashion and food to go - I was treating my friends who just had a baby. The cocktail was delicious (I am an old fashion freak so I taste one in each establishment that serves it). I would suggest for them to serve it over one big clear solid piece of ice instead of a bunch of cubes, to preserve the integrity as one sips the elixir. The service is excellent, accommodating, friendly, and willing to help. The ambiance is warm, simple, inviting, yet urban chic. Every dish was superb. I order Kimchi Dumplings, English Pea Dumplings, Dan Dan Noodles, Nam Prik Udon with shrimp, and White Prawn Carbonara. My friend place it on colorful plates and we shared. Truly a delight of flavors to our tastebuds. The 3 of us were delighted with the preparation, flavors, and spices. My favorite, or these bunch, was the Dan Dan Noodles, had a little kick. I could not resist my sweet tooth and ordered 4 Layer Coconut Cake and Kafir Lime Cheesecake which we just eat out of the boxes. Each one with a fork in hand and satisfied experience. I LOVE this place. It's a flavor party in your mouth. The green papaya salad is the best I've ever had. Short rib dumplings and kimchi dumplings were terrific. Just the right amount of hot. Everyone praised their entrees: barramundi, bibimbop with steak, crispy noodles with chicken and Burgers. Desserts are good with very reasonable prices as they are large enough to share, in particular the Brown butter chocolate chip cookies and the Baked Alaska. Community welcomes everyone into their upscale tastefully decorated space on Milwaukee Ave. The food is vegetable forward but not restricted by vegetarianism. Their prominent bar is cocktail forward but not limited by mixology. The staff is highly skilled and sensitively considerate from hosting to serving to bar tending. They do a daily Happy Hour which I recommend to get comfortable if you are shy of creative cooking. This is a perfect spot to pop in before or after the theater or other event nearby. Street parking. What makes this place most special are the employees. Everyone seems like they truly love the place, which you feel immediately upon entering. My friend and I came Saturday night with a reservation and were seated immediately. Our server gave us honest recommendations based on the items we were torn between, and it was great. I recommend anyone ask for help deciding! The mushroom butter dumplings were amazing (as promised), and the trout was also fantastic-- very delicate and inventive. The standout cocktail is the duck a l'orange, which is an old fashioned in duck fat washed bourbon (bourbon? Yes, I think bourbon). The thyme garnish and the mellowness of the booze are a winning combination. I am sorry to say, however, that the desserts were a little less than awesome. The coconut cake had a nice crumb but was off the charts sweet, and the brown butter chocolate chip cookies (which we had the next morning so I won't judge their dryness because that's on us) were also too sweet, overpowering the yumminess of the brown butter. I'd guess they're good at coordinating the staff / service, but the owners might consider how much interaction they should have with guests. For the money, our dinner at Community Tavern was just about all aces. As relatively frequent Chicago visitors trying to step a bit off the beaten path, we noticed Community Tavern on the latest Eater 38 list, and it turned out to be the near-perfect neighborhood "upscale casual" place we were hoping for. For starters: Holy Bejeebus, the Duck a L'Orange Old Fashioned is just about the best version of that cocktail I've had. Don't worry, the orange isn't too heavy, and the modest amount of duck fat gives a wonderful unctuousness. The concept is basically Asian-influenced pub food, and the big flavors were well-balanced in just about everything we ordered. Green papaya salad--super-fresh--has a terrific blend of unami and brighter flavors from a fish-sauce vinaigrette and ginger and tomatoes. Charred carrots had a kimchi vinaigrette, whipped cream cheese, a little more fish sauce, and corn nuts (!) and peanuts for textural contrast. That's two A-plus veggie dishes. If ramp kimchi dumplings didn't quite have that ideal pan-fried crispness, they were still delicious--and potato gave satisfying substance. The house bibimbap is kind of a deconstructed version of the traditional dish; we ordered it with medium-rare flank steak. If this entree was mildly disappointing, it was only because of the sky-high expectations set up by everything that came before: it was still very good, with the veggies and meat well-executed, but it didn't quite have the big flavors and surprises of the other items we had. Our server was terrific all evening--congenial, and helpful with menu explanations--and along with the kitchen, he sequenced and paced everything superbly. Excellent job there. The "tavern" comes out mostly in the decor and atmosphere. That means somewhat loud for a Sunday evening, but it had a convivial, good-times (and yet family-friendly) feel to it. (Could do without Ricky Martin and Britney Spears and their ilk on the sound system, though!) Pre-tip, all of this (my wife had a drink, too) clocked in at a hair under $100, a terrific deal. Just had a cocktail and maybe an app. With my limited orders I can't say it is transformative, but I simultaneously felt a lovely Jefferson Park vibe in a way that def felt high class and original, in a way that elevated all of six corners, and fit in, and worked with it. I'm going to place the emphasis on it "was elevated itself" and def elevated kthe whole hood around it. read more
