In tiny little Dorset, where you can run for mayor for 1$, you will find a few restaurants. Notably, you'll find Companeros Mexican Food there, a mecca of sorts. I've been to this restaurant in two different years now, and each time it's been packed with a modest wait. There's a reason though... Location: 3 out of 5 Well...Dorset is one of those oddities where there's really nothing there but little tiny cute shops and restaurants. It exists as an outpost (of sorts) for the "big cities" including Nevis and Park Rapids. Actually - since the biking trail runs right through Dorset, it makes perfect sense that a group of entrepreneurs would have set up restaurants and such, and since Dorset lies on one of the main thoroughfares, I guess you'll end up there one way or another. Trust me - you won't miss seeing Companeros. Look for the biggest restaurant and the longest line. Décor: 3.5 out of 5 Quasi cantina style, and the waitstaff all wear brightly colored "ponchos" of sorts. You know...because it's authentic Mexican food in an authentic Mexican setting. Please note that I'm joking. They have a neat little enclosed patio area where you can just have a few beers while you wait, and this will be key to some of you - there's an ATM in that area. The main restaurant itself is actually pretty big - it might even fit the entire permanent population of Dorset, and I'm not joking about that. Specifically - the extended restaurant staff (including seasonal employees) actually exceeds the permanent population of the city. Weird, huh? Getting back to the actual décor - we're talking Target style banquet tables or wooden booths with minimal padding to sit in. There are nostalgic photos on the walls, but while you're there - just remember that there's something incredibly odd about sitting in a Mexican restaurant in the middle of nowhere. Don't think about it too much, or you'll hurt your brain. Service: 4 out of 5 The nice waitstaff wearing brightly colored ponchos are actually quite friendly and quick to take your order. They bring chips with two types of salsa almost immediately, and all joking aside - they are actually pretty efficient. Even at capacity, I don't recall having to wait more than 2 to 3 minutes for anything that I needed, e.g., a refill on water, another beer, or additional condiments. Selection of Items: 3 out of 5 Perfectly adequate for the setting. I mean - you're not exactly in a city where there's a huge demand for authentic Mexican cuisine, so you won't see pozole, menudo, tripe, or lengua on the menu. You WILL see tacos, burritos, quesadillas, enchiladas, and tostadas. Served in different proportions and with a variety of sides (rice beans, dip, fries, Mexican pizza, etc), I really don't think you'll go away hungry. The portions are huge, by the way. Lastly - they do serve Americana fare, like chicken tenders, burgers, hot dogs, shrimp, etc. The beer selection is ample, and includes the ubiquitous Nordeast as well as "cervezas." Quality of Food: 3.5 out of 5 You know...I can't say that I've been disappointed in the food here. Understand this - it's not 100% authentic, but it's actually pretty darned good. The meats are always perfectly cooked (not dry), and the proportions of condiments they provide are just about spot on. The variety of salsas they have are quite tasty, and I'm not in the least disappointed that Companeros is now a yearly tradition when I visit the area. Pricing: 4 out of 5 Remarkably cheap for how much food you get. You will eat VERY well for about 10 dollars a person, and bottled beers were about 3 or 4 bucks each. This is a good time to let you know that they do not accept credit cards, so remember to hit the ATM in the covered patio area before you have to pay. Overall: 4 out of 5 Probably a 3.5 - 3.75 true experience, but I do round up. It's worth a visit if you're in the area, and worth a repeat visit once you actually sit down and eat. Have a good time, and remember to run for mayor of Dorset for a dollar. read more

The last thing I would call this is authentic Mexican food. It is pretty Americanized. The salsa tasted like tomato paste. The guacamole tasted more like sour cream than avocado. I will say the sauce that covered the enchiladas was pretty tasty and was more like a chili sauce than typical mexican red sauces. The meat inside the enchiladas was pretty dry. read more

Dorset itself is one of those "Minnesota Weird" things that I love. Here's some Pepitos-esque Mexican eats (I beg to differ on authenticity - but you are over 100 miles from Lake Street) where you would not expect them. I wish they would've put some character into the new building. Compared to the old place that burned down, this place has more of a "cafe vibe" now. I will miss the old-timey saloon ambiance with the authentic Mexican flair. Other that that, the strawberry margaritas are divine, but the food is just ok... just your basic heaping plate of anything covered in cheese. The tamales weren't the best I've had, and anything with the word "seafood" on the menu is fishy shrimp mixed with imitation crab. read more

We are so glad they rebuilt and are back. We come to walker for the summer each year from Texas but we are always missing our Mexican food. Zona's in Walker always disappoints so we made the trek here and boy are we glad we did!! Thank you for making real Mexican food that you don't over charge for. It is what it is. If you've been coming here for 30 years and ordering the same thing, it's still here after the rebuild. It's typical American "mexican" food. On the night we were there, there seemed to be a birthday around us every 10 minutes (complete with singing waitresses and lots of clapping). The shredded beef chimichanga is my go-to and the price was right. read more

This was the third time my wife and I ate at Companeros...the second since the rebuilt and again found the food solid but unspectacular with very large portions. Service was excellent but the only thing unfortunately that hasn't changed are the mediocre margaritas. It seems the bar staff has an aversion to actually putting tequila in them. I might as well have ordered a non-alcoholic drink. For the price they charge I certainly expect more. Still and all it was an overall pleasant experience and my guess is that we'll back. read more

But best of all is the atmosphere: it's just fun to be there, lots of people having a great time and the staff is friendly and they all know what they are doing. There are better choices for Mexican food in the area, all of them are better choices. Over the years, I have eaten at Companeros a number of times, I want to like it, really but the food....is bland at best. If you want to eat Mexican, choose any other Mexican restaurant. If you want to eat in Dorset, choose any other restaurant. read more
