Excellent food - extremely large orders that can be split. Service was great on a Saturday night. Only reason for a 4 was the margarita wasn't really good. They took the first one back and brought a strawberry. In both cases a mix perhaps was used that smelled like Spic and Span. LOL. Both my wife and I thought such. Let me start by thanking Marlon and Jose for their excellent service -- the meal would not have been the same without them. If you want to have a wonderful meal, in an atmosphere that promotes conversation with art and friendly faces this is the spot. We come to Park Rapids in the summer every year and eat out a lot and Vallartas remains a top pick every time. I usually look forward to coming to Park Rapids for the Taste of Dorset. I have been coming for many years and enjoy trying all the restaurants in the area. I have eaten here many times and it has been pretty good. This year however it was terrible. Our server Olivia acted like it was a nuisance to wait on us. She brought out my cheese enchiladas and the cheese on was not melted inside or on top so I felt my plate and it was cold. I had to flag her down and she came over and said "WHAT" I told her my food was cold and again she said "WHAT" I said again my food is cold. She took my plate without another word. Brought the plate back and dropped it off and left before we could tell her my friends food was also not done. We just paid and left. read more

Vallartas was a decent restaurant experience in the middle of Park Rapids next to the Armory. I got the Fajitas which were bland for a Mexican restaurant. My wife had the Chimichanga and it was delicious - the cheese sauce really made it. We did not like they charged $1.75 for a second round of chips with salsa. But, no need since the food portions are large. Good service and the atmosphere was excellent. read more

One star is generous, but I hate giving poor reviews. The bad: The meat is so heavily seasoned, salty and soupy that whether it was shredded pork, beef or chicken, it was indistinguishable. The queso sauce tasted like it was made from a powdered mix. The rice and beans on par with Taco Bell. Ambiance reminded me of a pub, with two televisions playing and no windows. Service was okay at first and then just disappeared. We had to wait for a long while to get the check. Prices were too high for the quality. The good: You get complementary chips and salsa. I don't understand all of the 5 star reviews but we all have different tastes I guess. The prices are reasonable and the place is set up with lots of color. The service was just okay our food came quickly but we didn't see the waiter again until he brought the check. The 2 waiters sat in a booth and talked so loud we couldn't hear the music or each other. The chips and salsa were both good and the side of guacamole I ordered was ok. I had a chicken burrito and they filled it with chicken and no fillers so plenty to eat. The beans were run of the mill and the sauce on the burrito again just ok. I love Mexican food and we have some real good Mexican restaurants in Colorado and lots of average Mexican restaurants and this place is average. Probably the most disappointing experience I have had with Mexican food besides Taco Bell. We were in the area and used Yelp to find food. We decided we were in the mood for Mexican, so we decided to give it a try. Why am I disappointed? 1) Fajitas for 2 = $45 (we drank water) 2) Their salsa was flavorless. 3) The dinner was supposed to come with Shrimp (No shrimp) 4) The "carnitas" looked more like 2 large chunks of an over cooked pork roast, balanced on top of the small plate of miscellaneous meat and veggies. 5) The kitchen staff seemed to be having fun, but unfortunately that's all you could hear in this place. Not much of an environment for conversation. 6) Our server walked past our table 2-3 times, smiled, nodded, said "It's good" (More of a statement than a question) then walked away with no offer to fill our drinks. The fajitas came with flour tortillas (they didn't ask if we wanted flour or corn) and 2 side plates of lettuce, guacamole, sour cream and refied beans. The lettuce was limp and browning, and I would venture a guess that the beans came from a can as they too were flavorless. We did take our leftovers home where I added cumin, garlic, chili powder and salt and they actually tased like fajitas. The real sad part is the fact that I could have added soy sauce/teriyaki, put it over rice and it would have, very easily, passed as Chinese instead of Mexican. Our meal was definitely not worth the $45 (YES, you read that right) we paid and defiantly not worth the hour and a half we sat there listening to the kitchen staff and trying to have a conversation. I'm a 20%+ tipper and I left $7 cash. It wasn't the servers fault, so I wasn't about to stiff him outright, but I still felt like I left too much. All-in-all ... a huge disappointment. We will not be going back, and as a bartender, I will be letting everyone I know about this place. In summary ... Everything was bland and flavorless, the service was less than mediocre, the atmosphere was too loud and uninviting and everything on the menu was WAY over priced. We should have walked out before we had the chance to order. Dinner and tip =$52 ... No thank you. read more

I guess I'm never going to be a fan of this restaurant! Over the last few years, I have tried this a number of times and found it lacking. On today's visit, I noticed I had never seen any of the employees from past visits. There were quite a number of workers who were sitting around in a booth, as they always do, talking in Spanish in loud voices. (They don't speak English!) The server took my order, delivered the food, and never came back during the meal. No pop refills or asking if I needed anything. But after leaving the check, then she came back, and back and back even though I wasn't finished. I paid and left. I just can't go back there! read more

Arrived at 6:05, we were next to be seated. Couple behind us were seated before us. There is no hostess to great and take down your name. They are just winging it. Our waitress spoke very little English. Nearly impossible to order tacos with no lettuce. Struggled to order a tap beer. Mimed the "tap" action with my hands. People who sat after us are getting their food before us. Tables getting the wrong food. Thankfully chips and salsa are plenty. It's now 7:25, beer I was saving to drink with my meal is warm. I am full of chips and no sign of the food. Took so long my wife's phone batter went and now she want to "talk about my feelings". God deliver me from this prison. If you are reading this send help. Wife and kid are now fighting and my sweatshirt is stained with salsa. Table across from us just got their food after arriving 10 min ago. Another table just got their food. MY FOOD IS HERE! And it is good. Very good. Clearly there are some big training issues front of house. I love Mexican food and I suspect on a different night easily 5 stars. Tonight not so much. I really enjoyed this place. Finding a Mexican restaurant of this caliber in PR is nothing short of miraculous. I am withholding the fifth star only out of respect for my step-father who ordered something called the steak Cancun. I knew it was going to be trouble when the waiter did not inquire about how done the steak should be prepared. But Denny took it in stride, enjoyed the broccoli side and laughed about the steak all weekend. I feel I must expound upon the Cancun. It clearly was an attempt by the restaurant to please a very small minority of very American appetites. The horrid little cut of meat was met at the table with stunned silence because everyone else was so excited about their own entrees. It was served with broccoli and if our example was representative of the dish, it has no place on the menu but provided hours of entertainment throughout the weekend. The rest of us, from grandmother to brother, had only raves to describe our meals. . . And we all could honestly say everything was well-done! read more

Very good, I am from Texas and really don't like the true authentic mexican food, I like simple and good...I know how I want my enchaladas and rice and most of all the tamales. This place delivers all what I like, but, let's talk about the tamales up here in the north they are huge almost all massa everywhere we have been that even makes tamales, well I must say these were big but mostly meat filling with thinner layer of massa. So super good. Best place to have mexican food we have found in the north by far. I must say when we walked in, we wanted to run. But very glad we stayed. 4th day road trip, dinner. This place would be easy to miss., located inside Amory building with another business I guess. Found it with yelp, goggle is a flop. Seated right away, orders taken soon after. I had burito patron. This is one big burito. Large floor tortilas, with everything in it, steak, pork, chicken and a few pieces of shrimp, onions, green pepper, rice, pico de gallo, lettuce, and a cheese sauce over the top. I was a little worried about the sauce, but it turned out ok. Came out on a sizzling plater like fajitas, steaming like crazy. Had to wait for it to cool down, cold beer time. Wife had 3 gr beef tacos. She ate most of it so that is a good thing. I could only finish half of the burito. I would say even with the cheese it was good. A green chile or red sauce would have made it a 5 star meal. Chips and salsa average stuff. I would eat here again. read more
