My dog was only a patient here for a period of about 4 months. Everyone in the office was always very kind and Dr. Burghardt's exams were always very thorough. I never felt rushed which was appreciated and he had a very gentle demeanor about him. Unfortunately, our last visit didn't go well. I brought my dog in because his gums had started bleeding the night prior and there was blood in his stool. Dr. Burghardt diagnosed him with ITP, meaning he had low blood platelets, as was confirmed with blood testing that day. I was sent home with him that Friday afternoon with steroids. After reading more about the disease online, I called back later that day with follow up questions, but Dr. Burghardt had already stepped out for the weekend. We ended up taking our dog to the emergency vet later that evening and I'm so glad we did. Upon arrival, they said his platelet level was so low (essentially zero) that he was at risk for spontaneous bleeding - with potential to occur in his brain or lungs - and needed close monitoring and additional immune support. He ultimately died the next day after not responding quickly enough to the steroids and the identification of a tumor on his spleen (the likely culprit sending his immune system into a spiral). I'm mostly disappointed that we were sent home from Companion Pet Care on a Friday afternoon with little information, knowing that they were closed through the weekend. I don't think the severity of this condition was taken seriously enough or relayed to us in an appropriate manner. The office manager did call on Sunday to check in on him, at which time I shared that he had passed. I called back on Monday to see if they had received the ER records and to ask if Dr. Burghardt could call back at some point to summarize what had happened based on the medical records. At that point we were in shock and still confused since everything had happened so fast. We never got a call back or email which was really unfortunate. I would have thought he'd at least want to connect with us once since our dog was his patient and had died over the weekend. Ultimately, no one is to blame here but I don't feel like the situation was handled appropriately. I'm just so thankful we did our research and listened to our gut and brought him to the ER that evening so that he could be kept on fluids and oxygen support until it was his time to go. Apparently, ITP can develop and worsen VERY quickly. Keeping him at home would have been an awful experience and I'm sure the guilt we would have carried would have been unimaginable. More than anything, this is a warning to other pet owners that if you see those signs, please go to the ER immediately. This is not something you want to treat at home. Even if they seem fine in that moment, they could worsen within a matter or hours as our little guy did. read more

I've had several occasions where one of my pets had an emergency, and he squeezed us in. Even in non-urgent situations, we can always get an appointment within a few days. When my 18 year old dog with kidney and liver issues had a recurring growth that started bleeding and getting infected, no one dared to remove it because of her age and the danger anesthesia would pose. THIS VET BURNED/CAUSED THE WOUND IN THE PICTURES TO MY DOG--NO QUESTION. I AM THE DOG OWNER. THERE IS AN ANIMAL WHO SUFFERED. THIS INCIDENT WAS FEATURED BY ABC NEWS (link below). https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/dog-suffers-severe-burns-after-being-neutered My story and experience with this vet are as follows. I had been bringing my dog to this vet for two years. Keep in mind this vet worked at a spay/neuter clinic for many years. I waited to get my dog neutered and when my dog was nearly 2, I brought him into companion pet care on February 21, 2019 to get neutered. He went in a healthy, happy dog and came out seriously injured with third and fourth-degree burns to at least 20% of his body (see pictures). He suffered from these burns for 10 days before we realized something was wrong with him. On March 3, I noticed the skin on my dog's back was raw and bleeding at which point I bought a razor and my 12-year-old and I clipped his fur and discovered large areas of bloodied/raw skin across his entire back. I immediately took him to another vet who suggested that my dog had been burned. My dog needed to be shaved to ascertain the extent and severity of the burns, and because he was in pain, needed to be sedated again. The new Vet warned me about the extent of the damage to my dog's back before they let me and my 14-year old see him. We were devastated devastated by what we saw: a bloody, raw wound that was about the size of a man's size 12 shoe across my dog's entire back. I called the vet who performed the neutering procedure and owns this practice, Ted Burghardt, and asked him if it was possible he burn my dog. After seeing pictures of the wound, he admitted responsibility for the burn and offered to pay for the March 3 emergency vet visit, but I had to ask him if he wanted to see my dog in person. Eventually he reimbursed me for the neuter, which was itemized, charging me for other procedures that were done while my dog was under his care and being burned. After that point, Burghardt basically took the position that he would take care of my dog's injury for free (i.e., he would not pay for another vet to treat him) while I made it clear I would be getting a second opinion because I no longer trusted him. I did let Burghardt treat my dog for a period afterwards. He was all over the place with a treatment plan, which only add it to my anxiety. While all of this is going on, my dog was literally a bloody mess, with a bleeding, exuding wound that would break your heart (see pictures). Tissue would come off and stick to the walls and furniture. I became clear that Davie's fur would never grow back and my dog would be permanently disfigured but not before several months of suffering and living with this wound. Burns are horrible and very prone to infection--the skin dies and the dead tissue had to be cut out of my dog, another full on surgery, which Burghardt wanted to perform. I took my dog elsewhere on March 14 for a consult about the procedure because he was constantly bleeding and unwell and needed it done sooner, and I was not comfortable letting Burghardt do it. I'm glad I did because I spoke with the surgeon Burghardt recommended and she suggested I take my dog to a specialty hospital because the wound was so big and complicated. On March 15 the new vet was able to close the wound after cutting out the dead skin. My dog ended up with over 40 staples in his back and incision that was over 24 inches long. He also had a drain in the wound, which my 12-year-old had to help me empty twice a day. When I told Burghardt I'd write a poor Yelp review, I received a call from his malpractice insurance company who tried to force me to send them a final invoice and sign a confidentiality agreement so that I couldn't leave any reviews. This is all while the wound had not yet healed. They also told me they'd assign Burghardt a defense attorney if I tried to take this to small claims court and also assign him an attorney if I try to report the incident to the vet medical board. All of this is over $1500 and change, which is nothing to these people. I cannot imagine the pain my dog experienced, and can't stress the emotional toll this has taken on me and my kids. I have been bringing my animals to this hospital for many years. I started with Dr. Soifer, possibly the kindest vet ever. When Dr Soifer retired he left his practice in great hands. dr. Henry the dog seems to be wild about Dr Fowler as he hurries toward the acupuncture room and wiggles from head to toe with joy when he sees her. He feels so good after treatment, it's like a spa experience, and he falls asleep during treatment. My dog went from being barely able to move to taking little walks and patiently playing tea party with a 6 year old granddaughter. Amazing! So, with caring, capable nursing staff who definitely love animals and care for the clients... and the super educated and caring Drs, I highly recommend this vet practice!!!!!!! When I saw the recent, extremely negative review about Dr. Burghardt (that was NOT posted by the injured dog's owner, but after seeing this review was changed to the owner), along with the smear campaign that is being launched against him on social media, I felt that I needed to share our VERY positive experiences with this veterinarian. We have been seeing Dr. Burghardt for close to three years. Most recently on March 22 for a rabies vaccine. He is by far the most caring, kind, honest, and competent veterinarian we have had for our 10 and 11 year old pugs. He does not prescribe unnecessary procedures and his prices are comparable to other veterinarians in the area. Dr. Burghardt is very accessible and always spends as much time as necessary with us, we are never rushed and calls us personally to follow up after a surgery or procedure. With the pug's flat faces and breathing issues, it can be more dangerous for them to be put under anesthesia. We have had four or five surgeries performed on our dogs by Dr. Burghardt, and I have complete trust in him and his staff. I have recommended Dr. Burghardt many times and will continue to do so.
