I did research on where to take my dog for a spay for years. It was very stressful reading studies, forums, and different opinions on whether we should do a traditional spay, an OSS, or ultimately a laparoscopic ovariectomy (LOVE spay). After a lot of research, we decided the LOVE spay was the best option for our girl. I came across Dr. Ryan Tedder at Coastal Animal Hospital. I was nervous about the procedure, but wow, this doctor is an absolute GEM. If only everyone was like him! He took the time to fully explain the LOVE spay procedure, answered all of our questions, and eased every doubt we had. The day came, and it was a successful surgery. Dr. Tedder called afterward, walked us through exactly how everything went, and when we picked her up, he went through everything again with us and explained her recovery. This is a far drive for us, but we will absolutely make it every single time if it means receiving this level of care for our girl. If you're worried about the LOVE spay or are thinking about this clinic, I promise you this is the right place. The staff is great, with the all-star Dr. Tedder manning the helm. Coastal animal hospital was so great all around! They took us as a walk in emergency on a Monday soon before closing. Everyone from the front desk staff, to the nurses, to the doctors were amazing and so helpful! Even though they were closing and it was later in the evening, they took their time with us and helped us get a diagnosis. The doctor took his time to explain all possible scenarios of what could have happened and made sure we were in the know about our dog's current situation. Over the past year, I've entrusted Sprout's care to Dr. Tedder, and I truly cannot say enough about the kindness, compassion, and expertise they provided. When the difficult decision came to let Sprout cross the rainbow bridge, I knew I wanted her to be with Dr. Tedder and Emily. I initially transitioned to Coastal because of their stellar reviews, the warm and compassionate atmosphere, and the low pressure, patient focused approach of their doctors and nurses. Over the years, I've seen multiple veterinarians at both the Encinitas and Carlsbad locations and always felt that they were honest, attentive, and genuinely invested in my pet's health. Unfortunately, my experiences recently have left me disheartened. When I brought my dog in for her annual check-up last November, the tone of the visit felt very different. I don't want to call out a specific doctor, however, while he may have just been having a busy day, the appointment felt rushed and more sales driven than I had ever experienced before. The recommendations felt overly aggressive for a routine well pet visit, and it reminded me of why I left my previous vet in the first place. The nurse who assisted him also seemed disinterested in me and my pet, and clearly didn't care to be there. Since then, the uptick in communications: multiple calls, texts, and emails urging me to schedule appointments, has felt excessive and uncharacteristic of the Coastal I once knew and trusted. It's hard not to feel like my dog and I have shifted from patients to just another line item in a revenue report. I stopped by this week to pick up flea meds and casually mentioned to the front desk that something seemed different. To my surprise (and concern), they confirmed that the practice had sold to corporate ownership last year, and they agreed with the changes I'd noticed. Coastal Animal Hospital once stood out as a rare vet clinic that prioritized personalized care and client trust. Sadly, it no longer feels that way. They're professional, loving to the animals, and extremely thorough. I am a refugee from another local vet practice that has apparently been assimilated into a corporate/for-profit Borg entity. When asking for an explanation of why they weren't refilling my cat's meds, merely got a dripping- with-condescension "resistance is futile, MY DEAR"-type response. So, I looked around for a local practice with better reviews, and Coastal fit the bill. Just take a look at their website - so many positive things they are doing that are different from the norm. Just look at the educational expertise and history of these docs and techs. A symphony of competence! Picard would approve :-). A true refuge from the Borg-vet. I just had my first visit with Dr. Ecker. Was thrilled to see that he had thoroughly reviewed my cat's weird medical history, and explained his observations and recommendations. Scientific rationale for everything, while at the same time able to accommodate and discuss the weirder and not so cut and dry aspects of my cat's condition. Vet tech Karie was also marvelous with the cats (who, being cats, think they're being tortured by going ANYWHERE), and the front office staff were friendly and accommodating. Their office is beautiful, light and comfortable. I heard lighthearted laughing in the back rooms as my cat was getting his blood taken (and no cat yelling). Indicated to me that staff is happy to work there. Really good vibe all around. You'd think that being such an amazing practice, the prices would be higher than normal. Yes, we all know that veterinary care is expensive, and this is no exception. However, their prices don't seem any higher than the corporate-owned practice's were, and some quoted assessments/procedure were actually considerably LESS. Amazing. I can't even thank these guys enough for their caring and professionalism, and they weren't even my vet yet, but will be now. My cat was unfortunately run over on the 101. I didn't get the girl's name, but she picked up my cat which was a few blocks away from where she worked, took her into the office, was able to check her microchip and registration and from there let my wife know the (bad) news. They were quite emotional on the phone, and even when I got there they were so sad and understanding. They put my kitty in a box wrapped up in a towel and handed her over so I could bury her. There was no need for them to have done anything at all, and they took the time to pick her up, bring her in, check her microchip, call my wife, box her up, then even talk to me for a while. If they're this awesome with an animal that is not one of their patients and has already passed, just think how amazing they'll be with your animals. This review is the least I can do to say thanks. We left a previous crackpot vet for another one. This overpriced clinic is a joke. I give them another year before they tank and close down. The required checkup to get a quote for neutering was absolutely ridiculous. The vet said he wasn't good at ball-parking quotes when I asked him. "So, what's your job buddy? Have no clue seeing animals all day? Interesting...." He bs'd a lowball (yet still overpriced) one and then we got the real $900 quote afterwards via email. I'm in sales and can smell bs a mile away- my wife doesn't like confrontation so I bit my lip during the whole exam. They couldn't even get our dogs' breed right when I WROTE IT DOWN on the check in sheet. Wow.
