It's taken me a few weeks to find the words for this because of the grief I've been experiencing after the loss of my beloved dog, Sprout. However, I need to make sure that I share how incredible Dr. Tedder and his technician Emily at Coastal Animal Hospital are. Over the past year, I've entrusted Sprout's care to Dr. Tedder, and I truly cannot say enough about the kindness, compassion, and expertise they provided. When the difficult decision came to let Sprout cross the rainbow bridge, I knew I wanted her to be with Dr. Tedder and Emily. We had exhausted all reasonable treatment options, and it was time to let her go in peace. I loved Sprout more than I can express, and what brought me some peace in such a painful time was knowing that Dr. Tedder genuinely cared for her too. He was always so gentle and kind, and Sprout adored him in return. Thanks to him, she passed peacefully, and I am forever grateful for the way he and his team supported me through the process. Dr. Tedder always made sure Sprout received the best care while being mindful of the financial aspect. He knew when it was time to stop the treatments and allow her to go peacefully, something I will always appreciate. I am now a lifelong client of Coastal Animal Hospital, and I can't thank Dr. Tedder and his team enough for the love and care they provided Sprout. I know in my heart that she was in the best hands possible, and for that, I am endlessly grateful.

Our first visit to Coastal Animal Hospital couldn't have been a better experience. From beginning to end I really am just so happy we found them to help care for our newest family member. The front office staff was welcoming and great, the technicians made us feel like we had their favorite pup, and Dr Clark couldn't have been more thorough, knowledgeable and kind. Was really beyond impressed. If only I felt this level of compassion at my own doctors office. I know our pup is going to be in great care.

See photo I uploaded as he deleted his updated response. This is how you are utilizing your time by inflicting emotional damage to patients who have stopped coming here because of the awful care you provide. I stopped taking my dog as of 3/1/24. The owner of this business went out of his way to post an "updated review" so why did you feel the need to update this review? Your lack of empathy shows your true intentions on how you carry business. ZERO stars. As a pet owner I place a great deal of trust in the "professionals" who care for my dog and it's disheartening to see this trust breached in such a manner. I think it's completely inappropriate to post an updated review on this sensitive issue and actually even more disrespectful that you felt the need to post this online especially about confidential information regarding my dog. You would never do that to a human being. If you actually cared you would have called me instead you decide to post an updated review which shows how unprofessional this business is and quite honestly your character as a business owner. This is confirmation why I will never recommend coastal animal hospital to anyone and tell anyone I know with a pet to never come here. Dr. Sheldon was negligent with Hazel's care and I am traumatized by everything we experienced at coastal animal hospital. Again this "updated review" shows that you truly do not care about animals and only care about receiving good reviews. Avoid coastal animal hospital!!!!!!!!

Our littLe Great Dane baby needed a spay and gastropexy and a local vet recommended Coastal Animal Hospital because they specialize in the LOVE spay, Great Dane surgeries, and Gastropexy. They're professional, loving to the animals, and extremely thorough. I don't want to say how impressed I am because I've delt with many vets, most are great....and I love our regular vet...so I feel like I'm cheating if I brag about how amazing this place is. BUT, they are the best in all my experience !!!(I own a pet business) So that's saying a lot. Thank you Coastal!!

Hi, Dr. Clark and the staff at Coastal Animal Hospital have literally saved two of my cat lives. Each time, I came in with a mystery ailment that required the mind of a scientist and the heart of an ultimate pet lover to figure out. I can honestly tell you that Dr. Clark and his team are the best vets on the planet. Dr. Clark would call my Mom, even when I was in the hospital overnight to give me updates, he has an amazing mind, bedside manner, and heart. I have and will continue to trust my well-being with Coastal Animal Hospital. Love, Luna the Leucadia Ragdoll

I can't say enough good things about Coastal Animal Hospital, but I'll give it a shot. Every Dr. visit has been exceptional on all levels, from the moment you step through the door. The staff is top-notch...cordial, efficient, and welcoming. My golden doodle, Maddie, loves each and every doctor and assistants, and so do I. They're knowledgable and very caring of their furry patients, and I'm fortunate to have found them. The sincere caring of my little girl, from everyone, is simply the best.

That time he got wrongfully accused of allegedly mauling a baby but got off with probation bc he is SO CUTE!

The vet on staff confirmed this during his checkup and I scheduled his visit for vaccines the next day, we brought him in and all was well until it wasn't. Within hours of that visit he started having severe cluster seizures, one right after the other. While my dog was actively seizing I called the office asking for help. I was told it would require a new problem visit and that I would need to schedule an appointment and pay "like any other client". I asked if I could speak with a veterinarian and was told by the front staff that vaccines do not cause seizures. I rushed my dog to VEG Emergency in Encinitas. The veterinarians there told me that in some cases receiving multiple vaccines in one visit can precipitate seizures in certain dogs. My dog unfortunately continued to struggle with seizures after that. I hate having to say I was driving past All Pets on my way to VEG while he was having breakthrough seizures and ultimately passed in my passenger seat as I held his paw. I never received any follow up from All Pets. No one reached out to ask what happened, check on him, or offer condolences. I just wanted people to know what happened, so they can make an informed decision.

I never felt rushed which was appreciated and he had a very gentle demeanor about him. Unfortunately, our last visit didn't go well. I brought my dog in because his gums had started bleeding the night prior and there was blood in his stool. Dr. Burghardt diagnosed him with ITP, meaning he had low blood platelets, as was confirmed with blood testing that day. I was sent home with him that Friday afternoon with steroids. After reading more about the disease online, I called back later that day with follow up questions, but Dr. Burghardt had already stepped out for the weekend. We ended up taking our dog to the emergency vet later that evening and I'm so glad we did. Upon arrival, they said his platelet level was so low (essentially zero) that he was at risk for spontaneous bleeding - with potential to occur in his brain or lungs - and needed close monitoring and additional immune support. He ultimately died the next day after not responding quickly enough to the steroids and the identification of a tumor on his spleen (the likely culprit sending his immune system into a spiral). I'm mostly disappointed that we were sent home from Companion Pet Care on a Friday afternoon with little information, knowing that they were closed through the weekend. I don't think the severity of this condition was taken seriously enough or relayed to us in an appropriate manner. The office manager did call on Sunday to check in on him, at which time I shared that he had passed. I called back on Monday to see if they had received the ER records and to ask if Dr. Burghardt could call back at some point to summarize what had happened based on the medical records. At that point we were in shock and still confused since everything had happened so fast. We never got a call back or email which was really unfortunate. I would have thought he'd at least want to connect with us once since our dog was his patient and had died over the weekend. Ultimately, no one is to blame here but I don't feel like the situation was handled appropriately. I'm just so thankful we did our research and listened to our gut and brought him to the ER that evening so that he could be kept on fluids and oxygen support until it was his time to go. Apparently, ITP can develop and worsen VERY quickly. Keeping him at home would have been an awful experience and I'm sure the guilt we would have carried would have been unimaginable. More than anything, this is a warning to other pet owners that if you see those signs, please go to the ER immediately. This is not something you want to treat at home. Even if they seem fine in that moment, they could worsen within a matter or hours as our little guy did.

Dr. Tanuka was not only kind, personable and resourceful in person but he went out of his way to call on his off day to see how our dog, Korra, was doing after getting 7 teeth extracted. He also gave us his personal number in case we ran into any issues afterwards. The staff also broke down all of the financial charges before Korra's procedure which was very helpful. Not only did Korra have bad tooth decay (she's 9 years old), she had also been dealing with blood in her urine for about two years and every vet prior could not figure out what the issue was nor seemed to show much sympathy towards the situation (we have been racking up thousands of dollars in vet bills with no solution). However, Dr.Tanuka offered to do an ultrasound on her at no charge. Everything looked good with the ultrasound so we decided to only go forward with her dental procedure and to our surprise, that is what stopped her bloody urine. We are beyond grateful that the staff at the clinic was able to figure out this mystery! Korra is back to her energetic fun self and her bad breath has completely vanished. All in all, our experience with the clinic and staff was exceptional from start to end. Every staff member genuinely cared about our dogs health and offered helpful tips with kind and clear communication. We will definitely be taking Korra here for her yearly teeth check ups from now on. Korra says thank you so much to the Santa Fe Animal Clinic!

On my last visit I brought Sage in because her regular flea medication had stopped working and she needed a worm pill and an antibiotic since she got infected. The initial estimate was about $800 but I did not do the tests they wanted so I paid a little less. Fast forward to this morning when my Chewy Autoship informed me that "Your veterinary clinic, Santa Fe Animal Clinic - CA, has opted not to support online prescription approvals through Chewy". So on the day before Thanksgiving I now have one additional errand of running to their office, picking up the prescription and mailing it in. To make things worse, they are holding my cat Pepper Jack's flea prescription hostage because he is healthy and has not seen the vet recently. I feel like they are using the prescriptions as leverage to force people to make unnecessary appointments and that they know some people will just pay for the flea medication when they arrive at the clinic out of convenience. I will not support a business that resort to withholding medications for my pets to get more of my money. I declined to schedule an appointment and am picking a new vet that cares for my fur babies. I asked her how many customers they have lost due to this policy she replied "I am not taking a tally".

During our visit with Dr. Hackett, I felt like I was unnecessarily alarmed and pushed toward additional testing that turned out to be completely unnecessary. I brought in my two dogs, including my Border Collie, whose heart rate Dr. Hackett immediately treated as a serious concern. She made it sound like something could be very wrong and suggested multiple tests to rule out an emergency situation. My border collie also gets seizures which I told Dr. Hackett about and she told me she thought they are fainting spells due to his low heart rate, not seizures. Which I also got confirmations he definitely has seizures and nothing else like she suggested. After leaving very worried, I sought second opinions from other veterinarians. They all reassured me that my Border Collie's heart rate was completely normal for the breed and that they have seen even lower heart rates in athletic dogs like him despite his seizures. What was presented to me as potentially alarming was actually very typical. The same thing happened with my senior dog. Dr. Hackett told me her kidney and liver values were elevated and strongly pushed further testing, making it sound urgent. When I had another vet review the labs, they explained the values were only slightly elevated and extremely common in older dogs. They even told me she is far more likely to pass from old age before those numbers would ever reach liver failure levels. They also mentioned the slight elevation could simply be due to her high-protein diet. The experience left me feeling like fear was used to push unnecessary testing rather than providing balanced, knowledgeable guidance. It caused a lot of unnecessary stress and extra expense. Because of this, I would personally recommend seeking care elsewhere and getting a second opinion if you are ever told something is urgently wrong here.
