Used them to to sealcoat roof a year or so ago and repaired some storm damage to garage roof a few years ago. Very responsive and their price was appropriate. Though recently I contacted them a couple times for an estimate for flat roof replacement/tuckpointing and did not receive a response. I am not sure if they are still in business. I had a whole layover done by a-competitive last year but forgot to leave a review. They did a great job at a great price that others quoted me hundreds more. The guys were efficient and professional during the process and the owner, who was overseeing the the project, gave me updates along with pictures. Fast forward to this week, we experienced 2 days of nonstop barrage of rain to the point that it started leaking at the back porch. I called a-competitive stating the problem and the area the leak was coming from. After a few days when the weather was better, they stopped by and were able to pinpoint the leak within minutes. They quickly patched the area at the seams where the source of the leak was coming from and now its fixed. It is during this time you realize the type of company you've worked with and how their warranty work. A few weeks ago, a leak developed in the living room ceiling of our 115-year-old, brick two-flat. We contacted seven roofers who had been referred to us by various friends and vendors and asked them to assess our roof and propose solutions. Their responses ranged from the simple ("We can put a new modified bituminous membrane over the existing roof and heat seal it") to the absurd ("We'll strip off the top membrane, leave the rest, overlay it with new wood decking, attach it with 5" screws to the original decking sandwiching between it the remaining roof layers, then coat it all with Thermoplastic Polyolefin [a.k.a. TPO]"). After studying the proposals, researching the options, and reading the online reviews, we hired A Competitive Inc. It's owner, Lin Moody, was impressive from the moment he arrived. He is a no-nonsense, straight-shooter who, upon stepping on the roof immediately declared, "There's no question: You're going to have to tear-off everything down to the decking. Let me explain why . . ." As the two of us walked the roof he pointed out in detail what the problems were, why they were occurring, and how the soft feel beneath our feet meant there were at least five layers of material already on the roof -- a minimum of two more than the recommended maximum of three. Befitting their name, the bid we received from A Competitive Inc. was very competitive. It also noted what the additional cost would be if any of the original decking needed to be replaced (none did), as well as the cost for replacing the fragile coping that would need to be removed to correct mistakes made by the roofer hired by a previous owner (most of them did). We absolutely made the right call in hiring A Competitive Inc. Once Lin and his team got the tear-off underway, they counted a stunning total of TEN roofs on the house -- including the original! Three of the layers were the once-common (and extremely heavy) gravel-coated membranes. Ideally, the maximum dead load per square foot of a roof is around 10 lbs. Ours was 40 lbs. A six-inch snowfall of wet snow -- of which we have had several in recent years -- adds an additional live load of 23 lbs. per square foot. Needless to say, we were unwittingly at risk of having the roof collapse and very fortunate that it never did. As the structural engineers hired to examine the original Soldier Field once said, "The only reason it's still standing is force of habit." That's probably why ours never collapsed. Had we gone with any of the other roofing proposals we received, a future collapse would have been a mathematical certainty. The good news was that the original decking, which had been all but hermitically sealed beneath those 10 layers of roofing, was in pristine condition. The tear-off revealed some tuckpointing that needed to be done on the back of the home's cornice and along the parapet. With the majority of the old and brittle clay copings cracking, we decided to replace them all. Notwithstanding all this additional work, A Competitive Inc. completed the entire job in two days -- and was still less expensive than the other proposals we received. Lin and his entire team of workers on the roof and on the ground were hard-working and professional. Importantly, the clean-up they did after all the work was finished was absolutely thorough. We contracted them to do our building's roof. That required putting a new layer of modified bitumen down, and replacing some of the roof decking in a few bad spots. Overall, the work they did was good and at a decent price. However there were a couple issues: 1) There was a pergola on the roof that they had to work around. They did not protect it from paint or torching, so there was some damage. 2) Three roof vents had to be installed but we wanted them installed in specific spots. They asked me to mark the spots, so I did with black spray paint. Later, I discovered that they didn't even install them in the spots that I had marked. Upon complaining of these issues, Lin said he wouldn't charge us for the joists they replaced, and would come out in the spring to sand and fix the pergola. Which was nice, but the joists that they said they replaced was not brought up until after I complained, and there's no proof that they actually replaced the joists, so I'm not sure if that was a deal or not. So I'm leaving this rating at 3 stars for now. If they come out in the spring to clean up the pergola, I'll increase the rating. If not, I'll decrease it. read more

Lindle is a true tradesman - honest and reliable. We contacted a number of roofing companies before we found A Competative through our neighborhood Facebook group - and they all seemed to have flat rate prices that were short on details and high on dollars. Lin gave us a competative bid, and also talked through potential additional work that could be required, as well as giving us the prices for that. It ended up being a very messy job (4 layers, 3 of them gravel) - but the additional charges were minimal, and the work was completed quickly. When getting bids - make sure you validate that the people doing your roof work actually have the insurance (especially workers comp) they say they do. The only bid that came in cheaper than Lin's was from a company without it. Lin also gave us a great price on some much needed tuck-pointing.
