He and his team were very professional, knowledgeable, and treated us like family. They ensured we were informed about everything from before, during and after the surgery. Wife had a persistent nose bleed on a Sunday. Called to a) see if it was necessary to bring her in and b) if they had an ENT on staff? Was told over the phone "Yes" to both, so I brought my wife in. Arrived and was checked in, then told that they could not do anything for my wife's nose bleed except give her gauze (which we already had) and that they in fact "never have an ENT on staff" and weren't sure why the person on the phone told me they did. Er visit. 2nd in three weeks. First time could not get a blood draw which is difficult for my daughter. Admitted she had infection but dismissed her without no advise or remedy other than to call her Dr. yesterday returned with more severe symptoms and neurological symptoms. At first they were awesome and attentive. Did ct of her abdomen. Said it was gastritis probably from a virus(virus don't lady for over three weeks) and had no other explanation but when you look up information can be more serious. Pumped her up with morphine and fentanyl for pain and sent her on her way. Vomited all night. Never addressed the neurological symptoms even when asked. They were very kind but imho worthless. my sister has been there 3 times in the last 2 weeks for the same issue (a huge hemorrhagic ovarian cyst and twisting ovary) and they've done nothing but offer pain meds. they've not communicated w/her OB, and when she made them, the OBs office wouldn't get her in until the middle of january (also a JW dr). she came back the 3rd time with the cysts growing and worstening and they still did nothing. she asked about the rule that if a patient is seen 3 or more times for the same thing w/in a certain time period, they will admit the patient for more thorough everything and the reply from staff on their reasoning for not offering this is that she refused pain meds last time. PAIN MEDS??? thats not a fix for her issue, she could bleed internally if this ruptures. i am so pissed off. read more

This was my first experience at Johnston-Willis, as I've always went to Chippenham up until now. Well, I can tell you the difference is like night and day. The staff were nicer and treated me with a lot more dignity and respect than they did at Chippenham (this only pertains to the ER, outpatient and Radiology at Chippenham - the inpatient staff at Chippenham were great). There was little to no wait at JW, the staff as a whole was friendly and answered any questions I had without acting like it was a bother, and what else can I say - it was a pleasant experience in an otherwise unpleasant situation. I also received the results from my x-rays and ultrasounds the next day, which to me was fantastic. I definitely recommend this hospital. read more

This rating is based solely on the JW physician STAFF. My main comment is if you go to JW by way of an ambulance or EMT Firm, get a lawyer right away. Otherwise you may have the same horrible outcome I did. February 24, 2024 my husband went by way of an EMT, so the only physicians available to my husband was JW Physician STAFF. My husband was in the ER, good care and STAFF physicians did not have a lot of details, but spoke to me. On 02-25-24 he was transferred to ICU. The nursing staff was excellent. The STAFF Physicians were beyond poor. My husband was in the hospital 5 1/2 days and each day I pleaded with the nurses that I wanted to speak with the PHYSICIAN STAFF only because I was told by my husband's GP, the STAFF physicians don't tell us anything, we get a report when the patient leaves the hospital. The only STAFF Physician I saw was the Kidney Doctor who told me until Wednesday, it was too soon to tell me anything. However, it was not too soon to flash his name badge so I would remember him when I got his bill. Wednesday this same doctor or rather a witch doctor told me my husband did not need dialysis, Thursday my husband needed dialysis and Friday he died at 3 AM of Kidney Failure; which should have been diagnosed by the supposedly JW STAFF KIDNEY Doctor who really was a Witch Doctor. BTW, One STAFF doctor did want me to sign authorization to put a tube in my husband as his lung had collapse. I begged him what is wrong with my husband, his response was only I need this for. signed period. Thursday before my husband died on Friday, after begging for a doctor to talk to me, a STAFF Physician did come in and told me after my husband asked for a DNR, do not resuscitate, he would be in hospice hospital, nursing home or hospice at home. No further explanation. I did not know my husband was dying and neither did he. He knew he was ill, failed to tell me and thought he was going into a nursing home. All I can say is if you LOVE the person going to JW and especially through a rescue squad. Have SOMEONE CALL A LAWYER. You can give the money to charity, but this outrageous treatment of a patient has got to stop. I want to say again the nursing staff was excellent except not getting a physician to speak to me and actually tell me what was wrong with my husband. Likely they asked and the STAFF PHYSICIANS ignored these requests. There is no check or balance system when the JW STAFF PHYSICIANS can do whatever they want without a competent physician to check behind them and hold them accountable for their actions. Had surgery on a Friday here. Nursing staff was AMAZING!! Developed a hematoma overnight, and had to go back to hospital Saturday for 'emergency' surgery to fix. Was walked to the surgery waiting room, where I was left alone for over TWO hours. No updates, no nothing. Finally found my way back to ER, they were so disorganized....what a mess! Turns out, the hospital 'forgot' about me and therefore didn't call the surgery team until well after noon. The ONLY reason I give this hospital three stars is because of the most incredibly amazing surgery staff, nurses, etc, who arrived as soon as they were paged and managed to fix my little problem. Definitely, not a positive experience with the regular 'staff'...whoever checked me in and then proceeded to forget me....and then I was repeatedly told to 'wait just a minute' to be helped, after sitting alone, bleeding in a 50degree empty waiting room for over two hours. read more

My husband was admitted on 2/23/25. Stayed 9 days. I repeatedly asked them to walk him, to no avail. Until Angie/tech found out and got him put of the bed. She was outstanding. He was in Room 420 When they took him for a scan, a skin tear was inflicted. I asked the nurse- Karen several times to dress the wound, again to no avail. Finally, I brought it to the attention of a doctor and he sent in a nurse to Finally dress it. Instead of getting him up for the bathroom, they let him go in bed. Too lazy!! His food tray would sit on the counter until I got it. The lady said her computer screen was blocking it. The one time I left for a few hours, I had my niece's husband sit with him. He said that my husband started asking for pain medicine early that morning- when I returned that afternoon, still no pain medicine The doctor had approved his release but when he stood up, he passed out from the pain; hence, the doctor wanted to keep him another night. There are not enough words to express the nightmare my husband experienced Nurse Julia and Nurse Ruh were outstanding. However the lazy ones there for a paycheck need to go. Ambulance took my mom in after a fall where she had a contusion on the back of her head. They put her in a room and a Dr came in within 15 minutes. Sent her up for a Catscan, stapled the wound together, assisted her going to the bathroom using the pure wick device. All in all I'm very ok with the services provided. read more

I cannot say enough about Johnston-Willis. I had to be admitted to the Neuro floor (2nd floor) on Saturday and from the beginning of my stay until I was released, I was provided outstanding service. Dr. Jabeen was my attending physician and was very thorough in my care. The nursing staff went beyond my expectations. At every shift change they came in and made sure I knew who was taking over my care. Mikshu, Megan, Manem, Kinda and Carmen were part of my care team and they were all professional, kind, comforting, and just made me feel more comfortable about being in the hospital. I know there were others involved (nursing students Cherelle and Brianna and others) that were in and out taking vitals and making sure I wasn't in need of anything, providing friendly conversation. They all showed genuine concern for my well-being. Lori, the MRI technician made the procedure more comfortable than ones I had in the past. She placed a rag across my face that distracted me and made me less-claustrophobic. She continued to check on me as the tests took place and kept me informed. Would definitely ask for Lori should I ever need another MRI. Years ago I was admitted to St. Mary's for neck surgery and I always said that would be the hospital that I would want to be admitted to if I ever had to go in again. Then a few years later, my husband was admitted to St. Francis Hospital and I felt that he was given excellent care. A couple of years ago I had to take my 99 year old friend to St. Francis for a broken wrist and she sat in the ER waiting room for over 5 hours before she was seen. St. Francis quickly dropped off the list of hospitals I would ever want to be admitted to. For some reason when I was told that I was going to be transported to a local hospital, I chose Johnston-Willis. And I can say that it was the best choice for me. Johnston-Willis is truly the best of the best in this area. I would not want to be admitted anywhere else and hope that anyone reading this knows that they will get the best care should they have to be admitted. read more

My daughter hurt herself on a set of bleachers. She was transferred by Ambulance to Johnston Willis because they were the closest. They began by trying to put hey in a chair that another patient had just vacated. When I protested, about having it cleaned first, they said they were going to use another chair but it had blood on it. I said fine but that chair needs to be cleaned before she is put into it. Then they cleaned it. She was taken to xray where the young lady there struggled to get her on the xray table. But was eventually able to get an xray. We were told it was a torn meniscus. Given a splint and a prescription. My daughter told them that Walgreens did not take her insurance. They wrote the prescription to Walgreens. This was at 9 p.m. The walgrenns they wrote it to closes at 7 p.m. There is an all night Walgreens in the area. I went back to the hospital to try and get the prescription changed and the head nurse said it was nothing they could do, that the doctor said because it was a controlled substance, they could not rewrite the prescription. I told her that it did not seem fair that we were going to have to pay out of pocket, when it was there mistake. She said it was not her, she had just got on duty. I told her she came out as the representative of the hospital, but I would gladly talk to the doctor. She said she had talked to the doctor and there was nothing else to be said. I told her I was going to write a negative review and she told me not to threaten her. I told I was not threatening her but telling her I was going to write a negatve review of the incident. When I got back home, my daughter told me she had never seen the doctor just a nurse practioner. The splint they gave her is so ill fitting that it falls off every time she goes to the bathroom. I would go back for an adjustment, but I'm sure it is not their fault and there is nothing they can do about it. I choose never to go there again. read more

Received a check from Johnston Willis Hosp which turned out to be a bad check. I cashed the check had to pay back my bank the amount of check also fees for them cashing that bad check. I reached out to chippenham Johnston Willis reference same was not given a supervisor to speak with and no one returned my call. I was told by an Hispanic lady they don't pay bank fees. This is not the first time I had problems with them concerning money that was paid to them. VCI including radiation oncologist and surgeon are the absolute worst. So called Dr. Gonzalez So called Dr. Randolph So called surgeon Bouchard You start with these rats in a place of terror and they take full advantage of you. I forgot the So called nurses and nurse praticeners. Once VCI and Gonzalez run up giant bill and your left in severe pain they gaslight you to get you out of their offices. My MRI showed my bowel resection is leaking and the surgeon didn't even bother speaking with me. She told my new VCI oncologist it's a normal recovery (1 year later). I only tried her because my wife thought she was not part of VCI. My first and last visit with her she spent her time trying to defend all the previous actions and charged 250 to educate me on how they had big degrees and I didn't understand things. If you can avoid these rats do yourself a favor. 2 years in I am still at the pain doctor tomorrow, more steroid injections and then they are going to burn the nerves with radio waves and kill them off to stop the pain. Maybe I should write a book because I only touched on what I want to say. Jw recovery- horrible Jw nursing staff-horrible (6 hours late for pain meds) and they could care less. .....and they LIE to cover everything up. Then try and get a second opinion from a surgeon- in this system they need to speak to the previous surgeon- some unbiased opinion! My wife saw Dr Micheal Rose. She had been trying for a year to find someone that would diagnose her correctly with advanced cancer that she believed it to be. We are thankful to him for saving her with the correct diagnosis that enabled her to get in with an advanced trial drug that then saved her life. Their staff was amazing and kind. She wanted to stay with this hospital for treatment because of the care she received however because of her situation we were unable to do so. However we highly recommend everyone there. read more

I had a horrible experience. I went in and told them I fell and hit my head and as a result I have a knot. Not once did anyone check on my head. The charge nurse Sarah, was very rude and did not come to review any of my labs or anything. Dr. Timothy Titchner prescribed medication (without checking to make sure I was comfortable with taking them) and handed me discharge papers without telling me anything. No one could assist me when asking for information. After waiting and waiting for someone to tell me what was going on a new charge nurse Mr. Greg came in and tried to rip my IV out my arm aggresslively. I asked him if he could go get the Dr for me he told he he'd be right back but never returned. I left there all to find out I have a concussion. If I had not gone elsewhere after I could have died in my sleep. They did a horrible job! This is not how a patient who came in with excruciating pain should feel. 5 hours wasted. read more

I went to the hospital after a fall at home, hitting my head. Triage showed my blood pressure at 200/105. As I waited in the hallway for X-ray and CT scan, no one checked my blood pressure again. We were there for about 5 hours, not outrageous wait. ER doc handed me some papers, no explanation, and told us to go home. Two days later when I was able read the through the pages, I discovered they were not my test results. Went back the next day and requested my results. My elderly mother was admitted to the orthopedic-surgical floor of Johnston-Willis hospital, 3rd floor. The care she received there can best be described as neglectful (bordering on abuse) during the night shift and mediocre during the day shift until I began to bring my concerns to the nursing supervisor. The day nursing staff (in particular Mel and Amy) I am grateful for as they treated her with dignity and respect. The PT and OT were lovely and compassionate. Night nursing by Lauren and Kim was horrible. In fact, Kim actually took out her frustrations on my mother. I will never again let anyone I love and care about choose HCA Johnston Willis as a matter of safety and competent, standardized care. read more

I had surgery there several months ago. Unfortunately I am still having complications from the surgery. I'm not sure what the reason is. I had a very good experience with my preop. The anesthesiologist was very nice and went over meds and everything with me for quite some time. I don't know about the time during my surgery because I was knocked out. I do know it took quite some time before I was able to be put in a room. And then I had Several issues. First of all I hadn't eaten in 24 hours and I was getting a migraine and desperately wanted food. My nurse was stalling and I didn't know why. I also asked for pain medicine and wasn't given that. I had trouble calling a nurse because they didn't put that call button near me. I actually had to text my husband to see if he could call the nurses station to see if someone could come by. But he couldn't get through. I also had no voice after the surgery so it was hard to yell. I feel like there was a miscommunication between my doctor and the hospital. After a couple hours, and many times asking, I finally got a meal. It was hard steak. I couldn't even open my mouth barely to eat bread let alone steak. I pushed the meal aside. Then I was put on morphine because I had to wait so long to get pain meds. I was digging in my bag to take my prescribed meds from my doctor as an alternative. Didn't think this should be my responsibility. Then I was given an anabiotic drip which was different than I had agreed to with the anesthesiologist, since I have many allergies. I told her to stop until I spoke to my doctor. Which I did. After my doctor called me, she said the medicine was fine even though it's not what I had agreed to. When I called and asked them to turn the light out that they left on, they told me it was just on the wall to do it myself. When I got up there were several switches and I was afraid I would turn off the power to the floor, so I didn't do it. I finally got some applesauce. There was one nurse that was extremely nice. She saved my day. Her name is Brittany. She talked to me quite a bit during the night and helped to alleviate some of my anxiety with everything that had happened. I was told that I had to have my hair washed at the hospital to get the blood out. I could not wait until I got home, which was my preference. I was standing there nude with three nurses in that little bathroom trying to wash my hair by myself. No one helped, there was no soap, no shampoo nothing. Not even a comb. I got out of the shower embarrassed and my hair was just a pile of crusted blood and tangled hair. I just left it until I got home. The only other thing I can say is that when I asked for paperwork, I spoke to Selena in admitting. She was able to get me a copy right away and leave it up front for me to pick it up. I also filled out a survey quite a while ago. I never heard back from anybody. read more

Nurse Leader Tiffany is an amazing person. At the end of her shift she saw that I was lost and spent 20 minutes helping me find the office I was looking for. It turns out I was in the wrong hospital--but she was so kind. Dr. Hahn, a cardiologist, joined in the search an was instrumental in helping me as well. There are very nice people working at this hospital and it is obvious they love their work and helping people regardless of their problem. read more

Though I 'felt' attended to at this visit and thank those who were attentive, I received an incorrect diagnosis and after care which left me with nearly 3 months of distress and PTSD. Richmond healthcare is woefully inadequate. I am now going out-of-state for healthcare. Update September 2019. Memorial Sloan Kettering solved the problem. Do not hesitate to find their financial resources help if you simply cannot afford to visit a good hospital. We are now considering leaving the area due to very sad healthcare. Most folks do not even realize how bad it is. I now have PTSD thanks to this experience at JW. I suspect they are turning everyone who enters their doors into revenue. read more

I do not recommend this hospital for anyone for anything. I have (unfortunately) had many experiences with in-patient hospital stays for myself and family members. I will never go there again, and I will not take anyone else there. My family has used this hospital several times, and the experience has been consistently poor. I have never worked in a hospital, and I do not know why the experience is so bad. What I do know is that the most recent experience left my mother sicker than she was than when we took her to the hospital. While she was there, I made multiple pleas to the CEO to review her case. As one might expect, he defended his staff. I mention this because readers should know that I tried to get help while my mother was in the hospital. Upon discharge, we took her home. If not for COVID, we would have moved her to skilled nursing. With COVID, we decided to provide 24-hour care at home. After 48 hours, her condition was worsening. We made the decision to call an ambulance and to take her to Henrico Doctors Hospital. Thank God we made the decisions that we made. It's the only reason that she's alive. She has a long recovery ahead, but at least she has a chance to recover. The doctors at Johnston-Willis completely missed the underlying cause of my mother's illness. They treated the obvious issues, but they basically sent her home to die. The underlying medical condition was not found. At Henrico Doctors, they immediately said that they would not release her until they found out what the underlying medical problem was... and they found it. Because we took her to Johnston-Willis first, the underlying issue got worse, and by the time Henrico Doctors found it, she was in terrible shape. Also, while she was at Johnston-Willis, she was injured. The injury has left her in SEVERE pain leading to many tears every day. It would take pages to describe what happened. Our family is devastated at the failures of the doctors and the care she received before she went to Henrico Doctors Hospital. The damage may be permanent and her life will never be the same. I wish that we had driven the extra 15 minutes to Henrico Doctors Hospital. read more

My family and I spent over 9 hours in their emergency room recently for lab work and a CT Scan. The ER doc recommended admission so we waited for a room. That's when we discovered none were available and it was 9:30 Thursday night. We finally realized that a room would not be available until MAYBE the next day. We finally gave up and left. read more

I just wanted to commend mammographer, Irene Brown. I had my mammogram on Wednesday, Janaury 28th, 2021. I was taken right on time and Ms. Brown was professional, ensuring I was as comfortable as I could be while undergoing what I find is a painful procedure. Dare I say it? She made the procedure relatively comfortable. That's a rave from someone who does not look forward to having her breast compressed and usually feels like she's been through a battle when all is said and done. Most of the patients that visit are in the high risk category, including those with weakened immune systems from chemotherapy. Also, patient privacy is very questionable, they discussed people's personal information right in front of strangers ! Sub standard care!
