His assistant, I forgot her name, was extremely flexible and helped us get appointments and made changes so the surgery could align with my school schedule. She was super kind and made me feel so much better when I was nervous about the surgery. The nurses and anesthesiologist also were so kind and calming and funny on the day of the surgery, can't thank them enough for their sweet words when I was feeling nervous. Dr. Reis walked in and talked me through the procedure and my nervousness was gone and I was confident about going under. The receptionists were very efficient, got me checked in and seated quickly.. handed me a form to fill out. Funny thing was it had those #2 pencil circles like a sat test where you fill in the circle in pencil for your choice. This office is pretty busy because theres a long wait to be seen. I was warned in advance that this would be the case. Once I was in the room to be seen a super nice tech took me back for x-rays. When Dr. Blank finally came in to see me he was pleasant and had some good options for how to handle my issue.

It was obvious Dr Mudrick had been overbooked and was running significantly behind. At 3:30 after another patient was called back, a gentleman asked the individual if she was Dr. Mudrick's nurse. She responded yes. He then asked how far behind Dr Mudrick was running and said "I'm a doctor." The nurse asked his name, looked at her pages of patients and responded "you're at 3:40, I'll be calling you next." That got my attention and I responded "excuse me, my appointment was at 3:10 and I'm leaving" which I did. There are any number of highly recommended orthopedic surgeons in the Richmond area. Ortho VA is the ONLY place I will go for any orthopedic issues. Period. Their staff is the very…read morebest, and I trust them to fix my (many!) injuries. Dr. Shaia is the very best knee doctor, period. He replaced one knee, but only after trying multiple options to make the original knee last as long as possible. I appreciate the mindset that surgery is NOT the first option, but rather one to be considered after other options no longer work. And he trusts the patient to determine when they no longer work. He lets the patient actually be the driver of the decision-making process, not taking an attitude of "I know better." My knee replacement was as much of a breeze as a surgery can be - little pain, easy healing, steady progress, back on my way in the expected time with practically no complications. I don't hear that story from people who go to other surgeons... I appreciate his manner - he's no-nonsense, and asks direct questions to get direct answers, so that he can suggest options for care and treatment. He doesn't coddle or use euphemisms, which I appreciate - I hate being treated like I'm stupid! - and he takes seriously the symptoms and information I provide.

I declined and sought a second opinion. The second doctor spent substantially more time with me reviewing my test results and symptoms, and provide a different diagnosis, and one that seemed more reasonable and didn't involve casting me. I sought out a third opinion who agreed with the second, and I've since successfully had surgery. So glad I listened to my gut during that appointment with Dr. Weiss and found someone else.
