Wastes your time multiple visits to collect insurance $$ then refers you somewhere else instead of providing treatment

I've lived in Franklin much of my young life, and I have been going to this office since my very…read morefirst tooth cleaning, when the practice belonged to Dr. Walsh (who was amazing). Dr. Smyth has been there just as long and has been working on my teeth for a long time as well. So the last time I went to the dentist was three years ago. I brush 2-3 times a day, use mouthwash, and floss when I remember. I started feeling this excruciating pain in the bottom left side of my mouth two months ago, and after suffering for a few weeks, finally bit the bullet and made an appointment. I met with Dr. Abernethy, who I'd never met before. Let me tell you, she is the nicest woman ever. Let's face it, people usually hate dentists, because they're usually hurting you with those little metal hooks when you see them. But Dr. Abernethy was so awesome, try as I might to hate her for scraping my teeth with what looked like an ice pick, I could only feel mildly annoyed. It turned out, my love for all things chocolate (ooh, that chocolate mousse from La Voile) or just for sugar and carbs for that matter, completely rotted out my teeth. Seriously. So I scheduled an appointment for a week later to get some fillings. The reception staff are all very friendly and keep things running smoothly. I arrive for the appointment, and she got started :(. All in all, I received three new fillings and she removed and repaired an old one that had broken (thus the horrible pain that sent me to the dentist to begin with). The procedure was fine, I am terrified of needles, especially the huge Novocaine ones, but the doctor and her hygienist (also a sweetheart) talked me through the whole thing. She started drilling (my favorite part) and I was surprised I couldn't feel anything. My previous experience with dentists and fillings have all been negative, I could feel pain the entire time. Not the case here. It was comfortable, Dr. Abernethy made sure I wasn't in pain at all and described to me exactly what she was doing each step of the way. About an hour later, I emerged with a mouth full of fillings. They healed fine, I had minor discomfort later on when the Novocaine wore off, but nothing severe. I was pretty much up and running immediately after (which again, in my previous experience, getting a filling would have effectively ended my day). I returned again a week later for them to work on the right side of my mouth. This time, I got four new fillings and she removed and repaired an old silver one. Again, I was impressed at how smooth the procedure went. The doctor told me afterwards that in a few of the teeth, the decay was so extensive she was nearly at the nerve when she was drilling. Still I only felt very very minor discomfort (and strangely, not caused by the drill, caused by the filling material which stung a bit). I have to go back one more time to get one or two more this week, however will expect the same high quality service as the past two visits. Dr. Abernethy is almost too nice to be a dentist. I wanted to talk to her during the appointment, but couldn't with my mouth full of tools and whatnot. She is a professional with a sense of humor who is really, really good at fixing teeth. Also, this office accepts most dental insurance. I personally have Blue Cross-Blue Shield, and while I do expect to have to pay a little bit for all the fillings, I don't imagine it to be too extreme.

In February, I made a consultation for my son and was quoted a price for dental work to be done…read more After I agreed to the price, I made the appointment and he went back to have the work done. Once the work was completed the price was $272.00 more than what was quoted. I spoke with the billing department and explained what was quoted and what I agreed to pay. After several phone calls back and forth and checking with the Dr. they agreed to the price that was quoted. I was also told that they didn't accept my dental insurance because it was out of network and the work wasn't covered, therefore, I paid the (quoted) balance due in full. Today, I received a bill from them which showed that they billed my dental insurance the $272.00 and the insurance paid $177.60 with a balance due of $94.40. After speaking with the billing department again, they said that my son was over 18 years old and that he approved the work that was done. I explained that I was the one paying for it and I went with him to the consultation and approved the work, not him. They kept telling me that it was a 2 step process and that's why they charged me the extra money. I had to remind them again that I received a quoted price from the Dr. and if it was going to be more money than what was quoted, they should have included it in the initial quote. Today after going through this ordeal again, they said they would credit my account the $94.40 but still received $177.60 from my insurance which was more than what was agreed upon. Make sure when receiving a quote it's for all the work that needs to be done not just the first step.

Dr. Blattman is great, as is the rest of the office staff. My daughter chipped her front tooth and they said it was too far gone for them to do the filling. We went to another dentist who did. The next cleaning, they scraped it as if it were a natural tooth and the next morning the new bonding fell off. I called in advance of our next appointment and asked if we needed to reschedule because we could not be late for a gymnastics competition; they assured me that we would be out. They kept us late with no place to stand or sit. When I went back to the office to speak to the dentist, my children were let standing in the hallway, and they heard the office staff complaining about me needing to go to gymnastics. They used a sarcastic tone, and my daughter was shocked. We left the office after that interaction. When the new office called to get the records, they mentioned how unprofessional the office staff was. Today, I was reminded of this whole ordeal because I filled out the medical transfer forms 4/1, and they still had not sent them. When I emailed to ask why, I received no response. Simply put, terrible service.

I have never had an issue with my services or insurance until this year. I recently had several biopsies taken during a routine skin exam where it was determined necessary. I was never informed during my visit that the lab work (pathology) was not covered under my insurance! Why would they not tell me that the Pathologist checking my biopsies was not an approved Dr under my insurance? When I questioned them after I received a $1,200 bill, they said that "I should have done my research ahead of time."...If you are naked, under lights, with a new Dr and they tell you need a biopsy, do you think I am asking if "the lab takes my insurance?!" I am thinking I might have cancer again. I told them I would be able to make regular $100 per month payments until it was paid off because that is a financial hardship for me at this time. I just received a letter from a collection's agency, how nice of them! PATIENTS BEWARE!

Today, when I arrived for my exam, I was greeted by a receptionist who seemed flustered and running to the door. I asked if she was ok but didn't get a response. Ok, we all have rough days from time-to-time. When she returned, and I handed her my insurance information, she asked if my PCP had referred the appointment. When I said that possibly back the first appointment, but this was a follow-up, and my insurance hadn't changed. She wasn't sure if the practice accepted my insurance (one of the top 3) and then hurriedly tried to reach her manager at another location who wasn't available. She then stated that her "list was old and changes all the time", and that I would have to sign an affidavit and pay out-of-pocket for the visit. A line began to form and significantly increased her aggressive disposition, she asked me to take a seat so that she could help the patient behind me. I did and waited a few minutes when, she proclaimed from the window, that she could help me reschedule but I could not be seen today. Not understanding the confusion as to why the insurance provider (again one of the top 3) was unknown to her, I asked if she was new. She aggressively stated that no, she had been there for some time, and that she "doesn't need to be treated this way". Then, insisted I leave. When I asked why, what did I say? She repeated that she wouldn't be treated this way and that I had no right to ask if she was new. All of this took place in front of other patients. My family and I will be leaving the practice.
