I like the store. Like the People who work there. I occasionally buy components there but its usually for an old build that I'm just updating components on to give away to a friend or use as a server in my house. There's just one thing. The prices are so far out of touch with reality. It really sucks when you want to support local business but you cant because you know they're ripping off the ignorant customers. Seriously $850 for an i9-14900K? its $450 at best buy. It was never $850 to begin with anywhere and also a year old not to mention the 14 series CPU's are plagued with faulty micro code so yeah. Another thing $5,000 for an asus z790-F? What planet are you guys living on? its a $300 mobo. Nothing special at all about it. Did the mobo come with anything else like the rest of a pc? Maybe include that info along with the price tag because i'm just assuming at this point the mobo is made out of surplus adamantium from the Weapon X program and forged by elves in Middle Earth? You could probably order every component you ever wanted with overnight shipping via anywhere else and still save money. read more

My 75 year old mother needed a new computer for her five grandkids that literally take over the house and constantly need to be "entertained.". James and his team were able to sell her one for a reasonable price, as well as back up all her photos, videos and "paid" software programs. Even though she had outdated monitors and equipment, they kept the price low for her retirement budget and threw in some adapter cables so she wouldn't have to spend money on a whole new setup. The system she got is great and they even gave her a $150 credit for trading in her old system. Dads 9 year old desktop computer failed yesterday. We took it to Computer Renaissance and James performed magic on it. Its video card had failed and James blew all the dust out of the computer, popped in the new vid card and checked for any other problems the desktop may be experiencing. I own a photo booth and when the monitor stopped working I was between a rock and a hard place because of the dimensions of the booth it has to be a very specific sized monitor to fit. I took the monitor to Computer Renaissance and, while they don't repair monitors, I described the issue with the monitor and explained that I thought it was a power issue. The sales guy was very helpful and looked at the monitor and then tested the AC power adapter. Luckily that was the problem. It was a really cheap one that had burned out. Computer Renaissance found me a better AC Adaptor that worked and I was on my way. Definitely check this place out if you need any help with computer repair or replacement parts. They have used monitors for as low at $39 and used computers that are pretty cheap! read more

I used to live in Anchorage and worked as a Computer Tech, even though we were supposed to be rivals I never was treated badly by Brian or his staff, we swapped information and I bought items from him for years. Then due to a death in the family we packed up and moved to Tennessee where you would think this story ends. Not so fast add issues of getting older and loosing pretty much 90% of my vision. I needed to create a ultimate machine assisting me in seeing better ( Graphics Card an Monitor mostly) that didn't lag when needed to use vision enhancing software or zoom in etc. to replace my dead one from Alaska. It was about 10 years old and I had replaced everything you could until Motherboard failure. I bought new components from Newegg as we don't have any nice stores here like Computer Renaissance much less any that will take some time to talk or work through issues an Old Mostly Blind Tech may come up with. So my new items showed up some of my upgrade was pretty well muscle memory setup. Until technology I was unaware of and the user manual was not printed dark enough for my eyes to see it. I tried to call around here, BestBuy wanted several hundred dollars to setup or finish my build I had done 80 - 85% of the build. Others wanted like $80 - $120 or more per hour, or maybe had like a 3 hour minimum. At those prices I was back at building my own for less again. I needed to talk over the phone to someone about what I was trying to do and how I was trying to do it. I called 15 shops here 8 never answered or were out of business. Several would have to schedule me to come in and wanted money to do nohing but look at my problem, there was none I was unsure what needed to be done next as I couldn't see or read my next step in the users guide. I waited for a guy to call or come over all day long until end of business at 7:00pm I called Alaska. You may wonder why, I knew they were 4 hours behind my time. So I ate dinner to give them time to finish lunch, and called Brian was out most likely banking or at Costco the young man told me. I told him who I was and described my old business and he remembered me, I then asked did he have a few minutes for me to bounce some ideas and questions off of him as I couldn't see like I used to and needed a tiny bit of help or a nudge in the right direction on what I was doing. Stupid issues went fast like how to see my pin connectors for HD and Reset and Power if I can't see well. Then to the other two my motherboard only had an 8 pin power and this board had 8 + 4 I thought I remembered it maybe optional like for overclocking? That is what he thought too, I knew I could make a 4 pin plug if needed he assured me I could get the machine running without it or buying a new power supply. My last issue was a new on board hard drive memory slot NVMe PCIe M.2 I had heard about but never seen it, in my head I understood it and why I needed it but not really how to utilize it. I was going to buy two large sticks of the drives from Western Digital as I still have my account there. What I was about to do was a waste of money and resources all I needed was one drive for Windows and add the other later as an upgrade when the price goes down. I may have spent maybe 15 minutes of actual time running my questions by this young man. I couldn't do what was needed myself as I was unsure and not confident in my ability as a blind tech to do this any more. OK I dropped off my laptop on June 24 to get the screen replaced. I received a call back the following week around 6/29 or 6/30 giving me a fairly reasonable quote. The caller told me he would contact me "later this week". Given that the Fourth of July weekend was coming up, I cut him some slack and waited until the following week. I didn't hear anything the next week so I called him myself. He told me at that time that the screen they received was the wrong size and would have to be re-ordered & he would once again call "later this week". By 7/17 I still had not received any contact so I called again, this time I ended up leaving a message. Nobody returned that call, so I called back the following day. The gentleman who answered the phone looked at my account and said there were "no notes" so he couldn't help me, he would have somebody call me on Monday. I called on Tuesday 7/21 and was given the same line, that the screen that was ordered from me was the wrong size and they were expecting the replacement "later today or tomorrow". I reiterated that I was tired of calling and somebody there needs to make the effort to communicate. He said he would definitely call me back. Today marks the one month that they have had my laptop. Other than the original call to give me the quote, they have made no effort to keep me in the loop of what's going on with my laptop. I called again today and was given the same speech: the screen that was ordered was the wrong size, waiting for replacement that should be in "sometime next week". At this point, it's the same story over and over and nobody there seems capable of making an outgoing call. read more

I've been using Computer Renaissance for over 20 years. They are one of those small local businesses whose selection is never quite as good and whose prices are always a little more than the giant retail chains or online E-tailers, but you feel good about giving them your business and your money. That is until recently. I was out doing some running around and decided to swing by and take a look at their current stock. Wow was I surprised to see that they had a full set of all the current GPUs in stock from both Nvidia and AMD. I was even more surprised to see they had full on scalping prices going on. An RTX 3060(MSRP $349) priced a little over $1300, and it just went up from there. Now, whether CompuRen paid a scalper's prices for the cards and then marked them up again before putting them on the shelves, or whether they got them for a normal price and marked them up to scalper prices, either way they are promoting scalping, and I'll no longer do any business with them, ever again. Sure, there are those people who will say it is supply and demand that is pushing the prices up, but guess what, the shortage of chips and cards and the increased demand is all directly related to the worldwide pandemic, and in any other natural disaster the government steps in and reminds unscrupulous businesses that they can't over inflate prices to take advantage of the situation. Businesses need to be reminded of that right now as well, and the best way we can do it is by not giving them our business. read more

Wonderful staff. Oddities galore. I have visited this store several times on a whim and have on several occasions asked for some strange parts such as older desktop K series boards or processor and even some old DDR2 or 3 ram. Suprised to say they did have them! I like to get the best bang for my buck and for used parts look no further than them I have been quite satisfied and would definitely recommend their services. They even have case grills for fans. Only thing I have to say is that the video card prices are non competitive and find that they lack that competitive edge. Having a minor 10% markup would be far preferable to the 30-40% markup they have now. I can not seem to convince them to lower the prices but alas this decision may not even be up to them. Most markups I find around here seem quite reasonable but the video cards themselves seem quite ludicrous considering that a best buy is across the street. read more

I forgot my power cord for my company laptop at home. I first called and went to Best buy. They didn't have anything that fit and suggested Walmart. They also struck out. I typed "Computer" in my GPS and these guys popped up. I went there and I guess it was the luck of the draw but they have an old one in a box. Saved my trip and my office from having to send one up for me. They were knowledgable, and very professional. The shop was clean and well organized as well. I am a fairly tech savvy computer user who has had some problems with one of my computers. This shop is staffed by knowledgeable, helpful folks, who provide good service for a decent price. When you encounter a computer problem, the most valuable thing you can get is information--is it worth the repair? What are the options that I have? How difficult will the fix be if I try it on my own? Getting this from Fred Meyer, Costco or Best Buy (even their Geek Squad) is well nigh impossible. After searching for quite a long time (several hours) for a computer parts store to replace my motherboard, I finally came across Computer Renaissance. While the prices were a little higher than online shopping, that's to be expected from a small computer store. Initially I was not clear what these folks were supposed to do when I initially took the computer in for a fix. I told them what I had done to it. I presumed a company in the business of fixing computers would know their stuff. Big mistake. They said they'd do a diagnostic. They did that for $55 and said there were no viruses. I knew that and that wasn't the problem. Trustingly, I took it home thinking they probably fixed whatever was the problem. But, the problem still persisted and a new one developed. So I took it back with a list of the problems. They did a system tuneup for $99 and more that I wasn't expecting. In both cases it took weeks and I had to call them several times for an update on the fixes. They never once called me with a status. Now, I have the computer back and can't print. The wifi was also not working. I don't know what else might not be working. They are open to being helpful but it means taking the computer in a THIRD time to fix what they should have fixed initially. The last two times I brought the computer home it had MORE problems than it had when I took it in. I called and spoke with the owner. He said they can't give me a refund on services which I believe is baloney. He could only suggest that my printer, which printed fine before they ever touched my computer, is the problem. The printer is not the problem. I know that much. He suggested I bring the computer back. I suggested he refund my $99 or some portion of it to account for what they did do. And, by the way, when did I authorize them to take off Norton and put other computer software on my computer? He suggested I download Norton from the Norton site. He suggested I download drivers from the Epson site He suggested that I put the other drivers, etc. on my computer if I don't want to bring it back to them. I suggested that I could have done all of this without paying $150 for Computer Renaissance's help which only screwed up my computer. This company is a RIP OFF. I'm out weeks of my time and $150. Very frustrating! This company gives small businesses a bad name. read more
