I wanted to make a Yelp event from this info even though I do not have any pets myself. The office is the national headquarters for all their outlets in the U.S. It is on the second floor of an office building on West King Street, called King 400, in Carson City. Most of the offices here are state offices, such as the Department of Agriculture. As I entered the suite, there was a large open area with offices around it. There was a small customer sitting area right at the entrance and a display case. A woman there walking around seemed to ignore me, but I think she was just a volunteer. A few moments later, the main employee (director?) came out. She explained what they do and the programs they have. They supply food pantries all over the country with free pet food and supplies. There is a map on the wall with pins that mark each of their locations. And the corporate office is here, in Carson City! How lucky am I to be living here?! :-) (They do not do pet adoptions, by the way.) Anyway, the for the event, the first 100 pets (not people) in line whose owners are homeless or low income will get the following for free at the Free Pet Wellness Clinic: pet exam by veterinarian pet vaccinations dog license pet nail trimming voucher for free spaying or neutering (limited supply) pet food pet supplies People start lining up early at 8 AM I was told, so you better get there early of you are interested! Cats must be crated or in a box, and dogs must be on a leash. The following are donating their services: Sierra Veterinary Hospital Timberline Animal Hospital Nevada Humane Society Carson City Crazy Cat Grooming and Canine Academy The employee asked me not to put this as a Yelp event, since she feared this would attract too many people. There are posters for the event, however, at various locations in the city, such as FISH, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of interest in the Yelp events I post anyway, so I am not sure if it matters. If people are low income or homeless why not get the word out? The lady at the register said "they are on the board". There were atleast 10 different "sales" listed on the board. I stated that is a lot to read. She was not interested. Thankfully, a kind gentleman shouted "red tags half off, yellow tags $1". Thank you. That works for me. Then while we were shopping another lady who I assumed was in charge yelled at 2 teen volunteers to stay on task or she would clock them out. It was uncomfortable for me and another shopper and we even talked to each other about it. They should not have been reprimanded in front of customers. Other than that this was a worthy stop.

Several blocks of Carson Street is closed off for the event. Good thing, there are a ton of people at this Saturday night event. This location used to be a Greater Nevada Credit Union with drive-thru, and the old sign for them is still there. This Salvation Army Corps Community Center used to be at 661 Colorado Street, but they moved a few years ago. They are still trying to sell their Colorado Street location. Please note, their Thrift Store (now called the Family Store) is located at 3320 Research Way, next to Maverik, off of East College Parkway. The Thrift Store used to be on East Winnie Lane, before they outgrew that location. Please also note that these two new addresses have not been updated on their website or Facebook page. The were not also updated on their Yelp pages, until I created them, today and last week. I guess they are not good at doing that. I hope Yelp believes me and approves this new page. The entry for the food pantry and other family services is off S. Harbin Avenue. For youth services only, you have to use the doors in front, on East 2nd Street. There is also a church, which has service on Sundays at 10:45 AM. The woman who runs the food pantry is on leave, so a cleaner is filling in for her the next month or so. so things are a little disorganized, as the fill in does not want to disturb the folders on the desk of the regular employees. So the forms I gave her the week before can no longer be found, and I had to complete a new form. Their food pantry is self-service and small, mostly non-perishable goods, since they are stored on shelves in an office. I did grab a bunch of green bananas though. They also have items like conditioner, medicine, and hand sanitizer. So you fill up one bag with whatever you need, subject to the limits they have written on each shelf. They also have a regular refrigerator for some items like milk, yogurt, and limited fresh vegetables. Few people go there, at least there has never been a line when I went. I am not sure why. Someone told me this is Carson City, so there is rarely much of a line, like in my former home of the San Francisco Bay Area. The rules listed are you can go once a week, and they limit you to one bag of items of your choosing, But the woman there said those rules are not enforced. Nevertheless, please take only what you need. They do have fresh meats and vegetables on Wednesday from 1-2:30 PM, but I have not gone yet. The employee said there are all sort of trucks in the parking lot that line up to give away fresh food that day. The hours for the regular food pantry are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9 AM to 12 noon, and 1 PM to 2:30 PM. Services require a card, which they issue to you after you provide ID, proof of residence, and proof of income, and fill out a short application. Parking was easy, as they have a big lot.

I met Dee Dee, who is the director of the two organizations, and receives no salary. She answered my numerous question and gave me a tour. She is a very motherly and pleasant person in her 60's or 70's who has been in Carson City since 1969 I think she said This is actually two organizations under one roof and management: the Rural Center for Independent Living (RCIL), which used to be on Fairview Street, has independent branches all over the country; and the Do Drop In (a day center for homeless and low income people, who need a respite in the day time). What their office does is basically connect people with services, like finding vocational rehab if you are disabled and want to work, or helping homeless people fill out housing and energy assistance applications. They also have a small food, clothing, toiletry, and pet supply pantry; as well as some warm and ready-made food for people in need. You can go there during the day to rest up, watch TV, get coffee, use the restroom, or grab a bite to eat. They are open from 9 AM to 3 PM weekdays. Supposedly, according to their sign, they also go to the farmer's market in Carson City on Saturdays during the season. This organization is also all volunteer. Dee Dee said they are not rich like other Carson City organizations such as FISH, the Ron Wood Family Resource Center, or the Salvation Army. She said other RCIL's get funding, but for some reason, she said they are considered the ugly step-child and get no money. And they get no Federal, state, or local funds either. That is why their offices are small and sort of run down, from my tour. Dee Dee also said that not getting funding is also good in a way, as there is a lot less bureaucracy to deal with, and they can do things more quickly, their own way. To help with funds, they are having an Italian Feed fundraiser on Friday, May 31, 2019 from 5 PM to 8 PM at the Governor's Mansion at 606 Mountain Street in Carson City. You can tell Dee Dee's passion. As I came in, she was on a phone call with a client, and spend at least the next 20 minutes with her while I waited. She told the client to call her back on her cell phone number, which she gave out, every two days until she found a solution. The client, a medical assistant, was looking for a job, health insurance, and anything else. Some of the info she gave out of the phone or while talking to me was incorrect, such as there is a fine if you don't have health insurance in Nevada (in fact, the Federal government ended that after tax year 2018), or there is a long waiting list for housing at Foothill Gardens (a low-income HUD project-based voucher housing complex in Carson City). She was also unfamiliar with Spanish and did not know how to pronounce a client, named "Dulce"'s name. I told her it meant "sweet" in Spanish. My father had the same problem when he first moved to California in the 70's and called the place "Luh Joe-luh" instead of "La Jolla" [la hoya]. Dee Dee believes in housing first and scatter-site housing. She is also is angry rents have gone up so much recently in Carson City and wants to get the municipality to do something. On the tour I saw a small day room with a TV and a homeless man sleeping on the couch. She showed me their small food pantry and toiletry pantry. She opened their refrigerator and freezer where I saw items like ready-made salads donated from Trader Joe's. She also has a crock pot so clients can always get a warm bite to eat. That days, there was potato soup. She made very little eye contact with me while giving me the tour, tending to things instead that she found. There was a single bathroom next to the kitchen area, which was small. The entry room where I waited was like a throwback from the 80's. I saw a huge boombox with two cassette decks. I also saw old, worn-out, and mismatched furniture there, like the kind you would see at your grandparents' house in the 70's or 80's. I will be honest: I was almost scared to sit down there, for fear of bed bugs. The front room/office was also super cluttered, with all kinds of file cabinets, garden hoses, Christmas lights, donated clothing, and everything else you can imagine packed in everywhere around the chairs and desk. Regardless of the negatives above, this organization does good work on very little funds and is all volunteer. The people their are passionate about helping people. That is all that matters.
