I like how there's a sign that says, "No Diving." Yea right. It's pretty close to Mexico. The Pecos intersects with the Rio Grande a few miles from here. It's a nice spot to get out and take a gander. It'd be nice if there was a restroom. But there's trash cans, and a bunch of graffiti and litter. It's a good place to make comments about how you're the best so-and-so this side of the Pecos! Yehaw! I've heard that Pecos Bill is from around here. It's a good spot to stop and take a gander or two, but that's about it.

Why, the highest highway bridge in Texas, that's what! Originally built in 1923, the bridge was washed away from flood waters in 1954. It was rebuilt and now stands tall and proud. The bridge is 1,310 feet long and stands more than 270 feet above the water, which is now controlled by Lake Amistad levels. A rest area on the South side of the river and road exists, and is kept in good repair. My mother and I enjoyed sitting up there looking over the river while eating our lunch and watching the very occasional vehicle cross the river. I even got to see a road-runner up there, which is not something you see everyday (well, I don't... I just see alligators down here in Florida!)

Once I arrived, I realized this was the place we had stayed at on our last trip a few years ago through Del Rio. It's clean, the staff was friendly. The free breakfast was nothing to write home about but it hit the spot. It's a locally owned place, not a chain. It appears to be more of a blue-collar place. There were several work vehicles, I assumed working in the area for extended periods.

We had two cats and our dog in the car. We tried to cross the border but we had an issue w a title for an atv that we were transporting and we couldn't cross. We found ourselves stuck in del rio tx w our pets. The mainstream downtown hotels were booked. We were recommended to call champions by another hotel because champions was pet friendly. Mario not only had a room, but he helped us find a storage solution for our atv and we were able to pass the border the following day. No other hotel would have helped strangers solve a problem like this. Mario has only owned the hotel for three months and there is no doubt that the hotel needs work. It was not a luxury hotel but it was a solution and it was delivered personally by a great owner. We didn't need luxury. We needed solutions. We've got to make a second trip to get more of our things moved down to Mexico. We will definitely stop by the champions inn on the next trip. Champions is not in the downtown area of del rio which we actually liked. We had plenty of space for our pets to rest peacefully before a very long travel day.

I recently had a quick trip to Del Rio and stayed at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites…read more While sitting in DFW waiting for my flight to San Antonio, I get a call from the front desk informing me the hotel elevator is not working. Fortunately, I only had a carry-on backpack and am able to handle the stairs. The staff did say assistance would be offered if needed. After a long day of travel, I get to the front desk and check in took a little longer than I thought it should. There was one agent at the front desk who was doing his job, so I think the holdup was caused by another guest that didn't have her stuff figured out. My room (307) had a comfortable king bed, the room was clean, and everything in the room was in working order. The bathroom was clean, but the step-in shower showed minor wear and tear. Water pressure was sufficient, but the shower head spray setting could've been better. There is no in room coffee maker, so the coffee station in the lobby is a welcome amenity and thankfully is available all day. The hot breakfast offered is decent, with something for everyone, and was different each day I was at the hotel. A few items weren't quite as hot as they should've been, but overall, I did appreciate the variety of items that were offered. Check out was a lot smoother than check in. This Holiday Inn Express & Suites is a decent hotel close to Wal Mart, the local shopping centers, and eating establishments, and one of the better places in Del Rio.
